Betty Cooke ’46

Betty Cooke, a 1946 graduate of MICA, is one of the world’s foremost designers and jewelry artists. She has won numerous awards, including multiple DeBeers Diamond Today Awards, and her work is part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Arts and Design, American Craft Museum, and Walker Arts Center. She is a former MICA faculty member, a role which spanned more than two decades, and was a founding member of the Alumni Council. With husband William O. Steinmetz ’50, Cooke established Cooke Steinmetz Designers and Consultants, and later THE STORE LTD, a renowned retailer of uniquely designed creations. The couple has given generously to MICA, establishing scholarships, a residency, and providing funding to establish the Betty Bill Black Box performing arts theater in The Gateway Residence Hall.

The Honorable Elijah Cummings

Congressman Elijah Cummings represents Maryland’s 7th Congressional District, including MICA, in the United States Congress. He is the Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and a senior member of the Joint Economic Committee and the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. The former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman Cummings began his public service career in the Maryland House of Delegates, where he served for 14 years and became the first African American in Maryland history to be named Speaker Pro Tem. He has made his passion for education one of his signature issues.

Leslie King-Hammond, PhD

Dr. Leslie King-Hammond, the founding director MICA’s Center for Race and Culture, is an internationally renowned artist, curator, and author who was the College’s first graduate dean. She was the project director for the Ford and Phillip Morris Fellowships for Artists of Color which led to the graduation of 225 African-Americans with MFAs from MICA, Yale School of Art, SAIC, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and California Institute of the Arts. She is the chair of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African-American History and is on the advisory board for the Edna Manley School for the Visual Arts in Kingston, Jamaica. She previously served as president of the College Art Association, on the executive board of the International Association of Art Critics, on the board of overseers for the Baltimore School for the Arts, as vice president of the Jacob Lawrence Catalog Riasonne Project, and as a trustee for the Baltimore Museum of Art. Through conferences and exhibitions including Transformations and The Global Africa Project, she has convened hundreds of artists and educators from multiple continents to examine perceptions of artists of African descent, the works they create, and the education of minority students.

Pan Gongkai §

Pan Gongkai is a painter and president of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts. He is also vice chairman of the Chinese Artists’ Association, and examiner of humanities and social sciences research projects of the Ministry of Education. He was previously director of the editorial board of the Journal of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. He holds honorary doctorates from institutions including the Glasgow School of Art and San Francisco Art Institute.

Mary Ann Lambros ’63, P’88, P’01

A 1963 graduate of MICA, Mary Ann Lambros is one of the College’s longest serving senior administrators. She was a lead staffer to the committees that selected both President Fred Lazarus IV and Incoming President Samuel Hoi. Over her 42 years of service to the College, she has held pivotal roles in virtually every area of the Advancement division, including associate vice president positions with responsibilities for development, constituent relations, communications, and special events. She spearheaded Art-A-Fare and Artwalk, turning the annual functions into highly visible, signature events.

§Degree previously conferred

William O. “Bill” Steinmetz ’50

William Steinmetz is a noted designer and entrepreneur and a 1950 graduate of MICA. The former chair of MICA’s Foundation and Industrial Design departments, he served as an instructor for almost 20 years. Likewise, he has been a trustee for more than two decades and was a founding member of the Alumni Council, of which he was one of the first chairs. With wife Betty Cooke, Steinmetz co-founded Cooke Steinmetz Designers and Consultants and later the highly regarded THE STORE LTD retail establishment, which specializes in selling uniquely designed items. Together, they have given generously to MICA, establishing scholarships, enabling the construction of the Betty Bill Black Box performance theater, and developing the William O. Steinmetz Design Residency that bears his name.

James Turrell

A master of light-based art, James Turrell has become known for turning light into art and using it to form images, shapes, and pseudo-structures. With work shown in 22 countries, he is also the creator of numerous “skyspaces,” unique architectural spaces from which audiences are encouraged to contemplate the sky in novel ways. Currently converting a volcanic crater into a massive naked eye observatory, Turrell has been honored around the world, including the United States, Great Britain, France, Italy, Israel, and France, with recognition such as multiple awards from the National Endowments for the Arts, Arizona’s Artist of the Year designation, and MacArthur Foundation, Guggenheim, American Academy of Arts and Science, and Flying Elephant Fellowships. He has received honorary doctorates from seven institutions, and won the National Arts Club Medal of Honor for Art.

Ai Weiwei §

An artist and political activist, Ai Weiwei is well known as a collaborative creator of the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympics. He has been called a leading dissident artist and has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Ghent in Belgium, as well as the Skowhegan Medal and the Chinese Contemporary Art Award. His work has appeared in major exhibitions in Asia, North and South America, and Europe.

MICA’s commencement combines many familiar graduation traditions with a number of elements unique to the College. Graduating students, faculty, and attending dignitaries wear traditional academic regalia combined with a soft velvet beret rather than a mortarboard-style cap.

Caps and gowns didn’t become a commencement tradition at MICA—which received its original charter as the Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts in 1826— until the middle of the 20th century.

Photographs of Maryland Institute commencement ceremonies held at the Lyric Opera House in the early 20th century show male graduates in suits arrayed onstage behind the women in white dresses. The first evidence of caps and gowns at commencement is a photograph taken in the Main Building at the graduation of the Class of 1940.

Soft berets became part of MICA’s academic regalia in the mid-1960s. Today, many students and faculty adorn or re-invent their commencement berets and gowns—a practice first mentioned in the College’s newsletter, Contact, in 1972. This spirit of creativity and informality—which often extends to all aspects of commencement regalia—is a fitting counterweight to the elegance and formality of a ceremony that speaks to the institution’s long history and rich traditions.

MICA’S GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES

The ceremonial march of students into Meyerhoff Symphony Hall is led by faculty marshals who carry the flags of the United States and the State of Maryland. Students are grouped by program of study and carry program banners. Graduating students in each program sign a ribbon, which is affixed to their program banner—a new tradition begun in 2000—and each year’s ribbon is then added to those of previous classes. Departmental banners are displayed onstage during the ceremony. Honorees, College leadership, trustees, and faculty enter, taking their places onstage as follows:

In the first row are the President of the College, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, commencement speaker, recipients of special and alumni awards, and the presenters of those awards. In the second row are trustees of the College, vice presidents, and graduate program directors. Faculty sit in the third and fourth rows.

Graduating students proceed to the stage when the awarding of degrees begins, grouped by program. They return to their seats upon receiving their diplomas.

The candidates stand and are presented to the College President by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The President then confers the Master of Fine Arts and Master of Arts degrees upon them. As each student arrives onstage, his or her name and honors are read by the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies from a card provided by the student. Students are greeted by their program director, and then by the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies, who presents the diploma. The President affixes the hood for each recipient of an advanced degree. Graduates are congratulated before leaving the stage by the President and by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and the Dean of Art Education.

MICA’S UNDERGRADUATE COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES

The ceremonial march of students from Mount Royal Station to the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall is led by faculty marshals who carry the flags of the United States and the State of Maryland. Students are grouped by department and carry departmental banners.

CommencementTraditions

In the first row are the Chairman of the Board, President of the College, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, commencement speaker, recipients of honorary degrees, special, and alumni awards, and the presenters of those awards. In the second row are trustees of the College, vice presidents, class of 2013 Distinguished Service to Students Award recipient, and undergraduate department chairs. In the third and fourth rows are undergraduate department chairs and faculty.

Graduating students occupy the lower sections of the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, and proceed to the stage when the awarding of degrees begins, grouped by program or department. They return to their seats upon receiving their diplomas.

The candidates stand and are presented to the College President by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The President then confers the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts upon them. As each student arrives onstage, his or her name and honors are read by the Dean of The School for Professional and Continuing Studies from a card provided by the student. Students are greeted by their department chair and then by the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, who presents the diploma. Graduates are congratulated before leaving the stage by the President, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies and Faculty.

THE MEANINGS OF ACADEMIC REGALIA

The modern cap and gown evolved from the apparel worn by monks and students in the Middle Ages, when academic life as we know it began. Academic regalia were a visible sign—in color, pattern, and design—of common discipline and like purpose. The flowing black gown and the elaborate ceremonial hood for those earning advanced college degrees originated in the oldest English-speaking institution of higher learning, Oxford University.

The hood, worn by those who have received advanced degrees, is lined with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree (MICA’s are brown and gold), and is edged and bound with velvet of the color appropriate for the highest degree achieved. For honorary degrees conferred at MICA, these colors are white for Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters and brown for Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts.

The gown, which covers any dress indicating rank or social standing, is symbolic of democracy in scholarship. The sleeve shape indicates the level of degree held by the wearer. Doctor’s gowns may have velvet facing and sleeve bars or chevrons.

The gown’s trim may be black or it may match the degree color on the edging of the hood. The distinctive gown worn by President Fred Lazarus IV at MICA commencement ceremonies was a gift of the Osaka University of Arts when he received an honorary doctorate from that institution.

The cap is a sign of the freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Its origins are in ancient Rome, where freed slaves were granted the privilege of wearing a cap. Rather than mortarboards, a black velvet beret is traditionally worn as the cap by graduating students at MICA.

Honor Cords indicate membership in an honor society

• Academic Honor Cord is worn by students who are awarded Summa Cum Laude (gold) and Magna Cum Laude (red).

• Art Education Honor Cord (light blue) is worn by students who have been accepted into the five-year BFA/MAT program. These students are committed to a pre-professional program designed to help them transition from artist and student to artist-teacher, one who can construct opportunities for others to make art and engage with it in meaningful ways.

• Leadership Honor Cord (bright blue) is worn by students who have been recognized for outstanding leadership and involvement in and contributions to the MICA community.

Leadership in Diversity Stoles are worn by students who have been recognized for leadership and involvement with the Office of Diversity and Intercultural Development:

• Asian Silk Stole: The bamboo printed on the silk is a symbol of the cultures of the Far East and represents resilience, life, hope, and joy.

• Faith-based Stoles: On the Jewish stoles, the bands of blue and gold are representative of the design on the tallith—the Jewish prayer shawl—as well as the the flag of Israel. The teal-colored stoles with the trinity symbol are representative of the Christian faith.

• Herritage Stoles: Represent the different intersections of identity that constitute campus diversity. The red, green, and yellow stripe symbolize the flag of Guyana

• Hispanic Stole: The primary colors honor the cultural traditions of these student leaders’ cultural origin. Inspired by the flags of Cuba, Honduras, and Puerto Rico, the stoles’ colors represent peace and honesty (White), struggle and strength (Red) and vigilance and perseverance (Blue).

• Kente Stole from Africa: Symbolic of African American heritage, the Ashanti stool symbol represents royalty, the diamond represents wealth and riches, and the key represents the key to success.

• LGBTQ Stole: The inverted pink triangle signifies a spirit of activism for gay rights, while the colors of the rainbow flag represent gay pride and diversity.
