Thank YouDina and Jonathan LeaderDina and Jonathan Leader are active philanthropists, contributing funds to over fifty Jewish organizations annually and helping to plan programs and events such as the National Hillel Basketball Tournament. Their main emphases are on making Judaism beautiful and relevant to a broad spectrum of American Jews and fostering stronger ties with Israel. The Leaders work with the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, the University of Maryland and Baruch College Hillels, the Anti-Defamation League, the US Israel Business Council, and various poverty, Holocaust, and Russian-Jewish agencies in New York City. Year after year, Dina and Jonathan Leader have supported this tournament and have truly amazed and inspired all of us with the generosity, and the lengths they have gone to help us continuously fulfill the tournament’s vision. We cannot thank you enough for your contributions and guidance.

Bruce and Karen LevensonBruce and Karen Levenson are devoted philanthropists who have been active in various proj-ects. The Levensons have contributed to many great causes such as the Community Founda-tion of Washington, D.C., the Hoop Dreams Foundation, the SEED Foundation and the I Have a Dream Foundation, an organization helping low-income children pursue higher education. The Levensons are also founding donors to the U.S. Holocaust Museum and fund the Museum’s Bringing the Lessons Home program, which teaches inner city students the lessons of the Ho-locaust and trains them to be tour guides at the Museum. In 2010, the Levensons spearheaded the development of the Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at the University of Maryland and provided seed funding to the institution that educates students on how to run nonprofit organizations and engages the university to inform and motivate philanthropic activities. Through speaking and philanthropic roles, the Levensons have done so much for the expansion of the tournament. We would not be where we are today with the constant support and care that the Levensons have shown us.

The Wilf Family FoundationThe Wilf Family Foundation has helped causes that range from Holocaust remembrance to education, health, social services, human rights, the arts, children’s day camps, art programs, athletics, and veterans’ support. The Wilf Family has been extremely influential in the United States Jewish community and we thank you for your generosity and guiding hand.

Lerner Family FoundationThe Annette M. and Theodore N. Lerner Family Foundation provides support to many orga-nizations in the Washington D.C. area. The Lerners have been an amazing resource for the tournament over the years and we thank you for your continued guidance and support.

Maryland HillelMaryland Hillel’s mission is to enhance the lives of Jewish students so they may enrich the Jewish people and the world. Hillel creates a pluralistic and welcoming community, empower-ing students to grow spiritually and intellectually. Maryland Hillel works to inspire 6,500 Jew-ish students to make an enduring commitment to Jewish life. Hillel strives to meet students “where they are” in a non-prescriptive way, and encourages them to explore and strengthen their Jewish identity. For more information about Maryland Hillel visit www.marylandhillel.org. We are so grateful for the help that the entire Maryland Hillel has given us over the past few months. Whatever issue we encountered, the Maryland Hillel was always there to help and guide us towards a successful tournament. We would like to give a special thank you to the Maryland Hillel Kitchen Staff who put in countless hours in preparing and making all tournament meals. We cannot thank you enough for all of the support that you have given us.

Craig HodgesBorn in Park Forest, Illinois, Craig Hodges started his basketball career playing for Long Beach California State University. After his college basketball career, Mr. Hodges played ten seasons in the NBA for the Clippers, Bucks, Suns and Bulls. Leading the league in 3-point shooting percentage three times, Mr. Hodges became known around the league as a sharpshooter. In fact, Mr. Hodges won the NBA three point contest three years in a row in 1990, ‘91 and ‘92 - joining Larry Bird as the only players to win three consecutive 3-point Contests at the NBA All Star Weekend. Craig currently holds the all-time record for most consecutive 3-pointers in the annual All-Star shooting competition (19) and just as recent

as last year he held the record for most points in a single round (25) - broken by Stephen Curry & Klay Thompson.

After his impressive basketball career, which also included winning two NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, Mr. Hodges coached for Chicago State University as well as the Los Angeles Lakers. Craig went on to win two more championship rings as the shooting coach for the Los Angeles Lakers (09’ & 10’). Most recently, Mr. Hodges was the head coach for the Westchester Knicks, NY Knicks D-League affiliate. In addition to his contributions to the great game of basketball, Mr. Hodges has been an advocate for many worthy social issues in today’s society, specifically the mistreatment of the poor as well as advocating for minority rights. We are honored to have Mr. Hodges join our National Hillel Basketball family for this year’s tournament.

Fun Fact:Hodges competed in the Three Point Contest at the 1993 NBA All-Star Weekend as a free agent after he was waived by the Bulls in 1992 (*following his dashiki incident) and did not sign with an NBA team for the 1992–93 season (or for the remainder of his career). The NBA initially left him off the field of contestants as he was not on an NBA roster at the time, but eventually allowed him to defend his 1992 title. Hodges wore a generic “NBA” jersey in the contest. Hodges was eliminated after the semifinal, finishing behind eventual winner Mark Price and Terry Porter. He is still the only player in history of NBA to compete in the three-point shootout while not being on an NBA roster.

About the Tournament

44

About the TournamentThe National Hillel Basketball Tournament was founded in 2010 when University of Maryland alumnus Rachel Klausner created the Tournament with fellow Terps to bring students together around the game of basketball. The National Hillel Basketball Tournament is known as the largest inter-collegiate basketball tournament for Jewish students in the U.S., connect-ing students to allow them to positively embrace our common heritage and communal link in a social, celebratory nature.

The organization is extremely proud to unite over 55 teams, more than 400 athletes, and around 2,000 participants from all across the country year in and year out. Maryland boasts one of the largest Jewish campus communities in the country, and has graciously welcomed the tournament onto its campus.

Maryland Hillel has played an instrumental role in the devel-opment of the Tournament. Through staff support and various resources, Maryland Hillel has been crucial in the tournament’s growth over the last 6 years.

We take pride in the fact that the tournament is run complete-ly by devoted University of Maryland students. Therefore, we greatly value your feedback. Please email [email protected] for any suggestions or concerns and take a minute to fill out the 2016 tournament survey when it becomes avail-able.

This year the National Hillel Basketball Tournament remem-bers Daniella Moffson z”l and Ezra Schwartz z”l, whose lives

were taken too early, in January of 2016 and November of 2015, respectively. Both Daniella and Ezra were individually known for their compassionate personalities, intense love of Judaism,

and desire to make a difference in our world.

Just last year, Daniella participated in the 2015 Tournament, marking just one of countless activities she took on within the scope of the larger Jewish community. Her intrinsically humble

and giving nature fueled her deep eagerness to do endless amounts of chesed and community service work.

Ezra had an unmatched passion for sports, and a perpetual ability to elicit smiles on those around him. He was profoundly

committed to spreading his warmth through acts of chesed and an enduring positive outlook.

We will honor them by naming this year’s men’s and women’s championship games in their memory. May they continue to

serve as an inspiration in our lives, and may their memory be a blessing.
