ARTThe Art Department’s philosophy embodies the ideals of commitment, competence, and compassion. The department stresses the development of skills and techniques in creating art, the appreciation of the underlying theory, aesthetics and history of visual expression. Developing a commitment to art as a life-long process is an integral part of the department’s goals and philosophy.

DANCEThe Dance Department is directed toward producing versatile dance artists who have the capabilities to meet the ever-changing standards of dance and dance education. A technical proficiency level is essential in the competitive dance/dance education market.

MUSICThe Music Department strives for competence for students in music; for commitment through the discipline required to perfect each musical talent; for compassion through an awareness of the uniqueness of each musical gift and the impact it may have on others. The department offers major programs designed to prepare the student for professional careers in the field of music.

INSTITUTE FOR ARTS-INFUSED EDUCATION Marygrove College established the Institute for Arts-Infused Education in 2006 to improve learning of kindergarten through 12th grade students. The Institute creates innovative models for teaching the core curriculum through the

arts and promotes the systemic integration of the arts in the K-12 core curriculum. Through this methodology that teaches to the multiple intelligences, the Institute anticipates great academic achievement for these students.

INSTITUTE OF MUSIC & DANCENurturing creativity, fostering discipline, strengthening technical and performance skills embody the mission of the College’s Institute of Music and Dance (IMD). The year-round school of the arts offers high-quality programming in music, dance, theater and art to children and adults at all levels. It continues the rich cultural heritage that began with the Detroit Institute of Musical Arts in 1914.The IMD also sponsors master classes, workshops and performances featuring internationally acclaimed artists.

The events calendar for the Division of Visual & Performing Arts is indicative of Marygrove’s commitment to quality arts programming

not only for its student body but for the enrichment of children and adults throughout the metropolitan Detroit area. Increasing arts

awareness and knowledge is a mission, goal and an achievement of Marygrove College. For this reason, several events have master

classes or workshops scheduled to coincide with the performances. We hope that the 2012-2013 series of art, dance, music and

theater performances will engage and excite audiences and demonstrate our desire to build upon and enhance the cultural fabric of

our community. Theater performances are the work of the University of Detroit Mercy Theatre Company.

A number of activities in the 2012-2013 Visual & Performing Arts Division Events Calendar are made possible in part by support from
