Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners:

As we begin the new School year and return from our Summer vacations it is a good time to make some resolutions about our Family-life: our Work-life; and our Prayer-life. Below is a multipart article on coming to know Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, and the importance of Eucharistic Adoration and Devotion which we are so blessed to have here at Mary Star. I hope you find it helpful and will considerer signing up for an hour with our Perpetual Adoration Chapel. Have a Blessed Week.

Fr. Harrigan Pastor PART 1 OF 3 Jesus waits for us in this Sacrament of Love

“In the sacred Host, He is present, the true treasure, always waiting for us. Only by adoring this Presence do we learn how to

receive Him properly.” 1. O SACRAMENT MOST HOLY, O SACRAMENT DIVINE, ALL PRAISE AND ALL THANKSGIVING BE EVERY MOMENT THINE

What is Eucharistic Adoration?

Understood simply, Eucharistic Adoration is adoring or honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ. In a deeper sense, it involves "the contemplation of the Mystery of Christ truly present before us". During Eucharistic Adoration, we "watch and wait", we remain "silent" in His Presence and open ourselves to His Graces which flow from the Eucharist ... By worshiping the Eucharistic Jesus, we become what God wants us to be! Like a magnet, The Lord draws us to Himself and gently transforms us. In its fullest essence ... Eucharistic Adoration is "God and Man reaching out for each other, at the same time!" The Eucharist is: Jesus truly present - Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity! At the moment of Consecration, during the Mass, the "gifts" of bread and wine are transformed (transubstantiated) into the actual Body and Blood of Christ, at the Altar. This means that they are not only spiritually transformed, but rather are actually (substantially) transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. The elements retain the appearance of bread and wine, but are indeed the actual Body and Blood of Christ. This is what is meant by Real Presence: the actual, physical presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Christ instituted this Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist in order to remain with mankind until the end of time (Jn. 14:18). The ( reserved ) Blessed Sacrament serves as a focal point of devotion. Because, as Catholics, we believe that Christ is truly and substantially present in the Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament is given the same adoration and devotion that is accorded to Christ.

At the beginning of the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, a priest or deacon removes the sacred host from the tabernacle and places it in the Monstrance on the Altar for adoration by the faithful. "Monstrance" is the vessel used in the Church to display the consecrated Eucharistic Host, during Eucharistic adoration or benediction. The word monstrance comes from the Latin word monstrare, meaning "to expose". It is known in Latin as an Ostensorium. When a consecrated host is placed in the monstrance, It is said to be a solemn exposition. When the Monstrance contains the Sacred Host, the priest does not touch it with his bare hands, but instead, holds it with a humeral veil, a wide band of cloth that covers his shoulders (humera) and has pleats on the inside in which he places his hands. At all other times, the reserved Sacrament is kept locked in the Tabernacle, so that the faithful may pray in the presence of the Sacrament. "Perpetual Adoration" is Eucharistic Adoration round the clock (that is, twenty-four hours a day). A "Holy Hour" is "Eucharistic Adoration of Reparation" which lasts for about an hour. Adoration ceremonies traditionally include Scripture readings, hymns, prayers and time for silent adoration. Eucharistic exposition and benediction is a complete liturgical service. Eucharistic exposition and benediction is a complete liturgical service in its own right and is to be celebrated as such. Eucharistic exposition and benediction are no longer considered devotions, but rather are a part of the Church's official liturgy. This liturgy is designed to "acknowledge Christ's marvelous presence in the Sacrament and invites us to the spiritual union with Him that culminates in sacramental communion." (Order for Solemn Exposition of the Holy Eucharist, number 7). In the past, benediction was sometimes added on to the end of another service or devotion, this is no longer done.

DID YOU KNOW? Pool safety is about more than swimming: Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the heat during the summer. Parents should teach their children about swimming safety, including how to identify and handle uncomfortable situations. Although you may be watching closely to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t forget about when they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. ¿SABIA USTED? Sacraments for Adults Are you a baptized Catholic who has lapsed

from the practice of your faith? Are you a baptized Catholic who has never

received your first communion and/or confirmation?

Are you an adult who was never baptized, or who was baptized in another faith?

Do you have an older child who was never baptized?

Each of these situations are unique and different but they something in common: they all describe a personal journey and a desire to come closer to Jesus and to the Church.

Weekly Holy Hour

The only time Our Lord asked the apostles for anything was the night He went into His agony. Not for activity did he

plead but for an hour of companionship (Archbishop Fulton Sheen).

Every Wednesday there is a Holy Hour in the church beginning at 6 pm.

The hour begins with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The rosary is prayed with beautiful reflections followed by time

for silent adoration and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. The Holy Hour ends with Benediction. Please come and give

Jesus the gift of your presence. This is a time of abundant blessings for all!

Hispanic Group Spanish movie night, "Father PRO", the film tells the

martyrdom by firing squad in hatred of the faith, the Mexican Jesuit priest and Blessed Augustine Pro, early last century,

during the era of "Cristeros". He spread his arms crossed. He had the rosary in one hand and a crucifix in the other. He

exclaimed: "Long live Christ the King!". Those were his last words. Friday, August 26th at 7pm in Room 218.

Parish Business Administration Class At Loyola Marymount University Extension

As the church’s ministry grows in scope, reach, and complexity, each parish faces the challenge of administering its resources effectively and fairly, while at the same time achieving compliance

with both civil and canon law. Increasingly, parishes look to lay professionals trained in administration to ensure that pastoral ministry can take place in such a way that both enhances and safeguards the mission of the church. As part of a continued long and fruitful relationship with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the certificate program in Parish Business Administration offers specialized training for those engaged or aspiring to engage in this pastoral service. Guest speakers will come from Archdiocesan offices and other institutions. Participants will be encouraged to present their own real-world experiences for class discussion. There are special tuition discounts for early enrollment, see website below for more details. For more information contact: Center for Religion and Spirituality Loyola Marymount University 310.338.2799 or [email protected] or http://academics.lmu.edu/extension/programs/pba/ or Pat Joyce [email protected]
