Rector’s MessageRev. Nicholas Tacito, O.PraemDear Parents, Students and Friends,

Happy New Year to all! It is hard to believe it is already 2016. As we begin the new year, it is a great time to thank God for the many blessings He has bestowed upon us during the past year, and to renew our commitment to follow Him more closely throughout this new year. God’s blessings are bestowed in proportion to our gratitude for them.

We all remember to pray when we are in need of something. This is important and pleasing to God. However, when things are going well, we often forget to thank God. Human nature tends to become complacent, forgetting that all good things ultimately depend upon God’s generosity. It is important in our prayer life to take a few moments each day to count God’s blessings. When we are facing the more difficult challenges of life, this practice is a source of consolation and strength, and helps us realize that Jesus is always with us as we carry our cross.

The greatest way to show gratitude toward God is by participating in the Eucharistic Sacrifice. This is why the Church obliges all the faithful to participate each Sunday at Holy Mass. We must thank God for His blessings and there is no greater way than by participating in the Son’s infinite, perfect sacrifice to the Father. “The Eucharist… expresses gratitude to God for all his benefits, for all that He has accomplished through creation, redemption and sanctification. Eucharist means first of all ‘thanksgiving’ (CCC 1360).”

At the beginning of this new year let us renew our commitment in thanking God for his many blessings, especially by participating each Sunday at Mass. Remember that God cannot be outdone in generosity. May God’s blessings and love fill your hearts throughout the new year.

Merry Star Christmas It truly was a Merry Star Christmas the first week of December. The ASB went all out in hosting a Christmas Spirit week for the student body. Hot chocolate was served daily to give a warm treat as the cold weather came upon us. A festive array of events took place during the week: Tree decorating, Dear Santa Letters, the viewing of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, Christmas Caroling, decking the halls with Christmas Spirit, students even took pictures with Santa Claus, Scrooge, and Tiny Tim. Congratulations to Anthony White as he won the ugliest Christmas Sweater contest and boy was it a sight to see! We would like to thank everyone who participated and especially those students who took part in our Make A Wish – Dear Santa letter writing. The students and faculty took time out of their week to write letters to Santa in hopes of making a few wishes come true this holiday season. 511 letters to Santa were collected and delivered to the Big Red Mailbox in the Del Amo Mall. Macy’s pledges to donate $1.00 for every letter written to Santa in hopes that wishes will come true for the children registered in the Make-A-Wish foundation. Students and faculty also brought in toys for our Campus Ministry program to assist with the Christian Care Giveaway at the parish. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All!

Seniors Win Tree Decorating Contest

Angel Bins, Angel WinsWritten by Chief Squire Rose Senior Katrine Eyer

Earlier this month, the Columbian Squire Roses and Squires worked tirelessly under the dedicated direction of juniors Vice Chief Ticela Molio’o and Chair Ally Spillane to hold a clothing and shoe drive for the less fortunate. Over the month of November, members of our Mary Star community donated a plethora of their belongings to

benefit those in need. After sorting through over 100 bags of clothes and shoes with the Squires, the Roses collected 1819 pounds of clothes and 855 pounds of shoes! Thank you very much to each and every single person who contributed to such a great and wonderful cause as we get into the true holiday spirit of joy and giving. If you missed out on our clothing and shoe drive but still wish to donate somehow, we are also host-ing our Gifts by the Manger Toy Drive this Christmas season to give children in our lower income communi-ties something to enjoy. We are accepting new, unwrapped toys; please send them either to the main office or to your homeroom teacher. On behalf of the Stella Maris Circle #0001 Columbian Squire Roses, Merry Christmas, Stars!

A Celebration of the Class of 2017A mass will be celebrated on January 29, 2016, for our Junior Class who will be receiving a special blessing upon their school rings and as a class, to unify them in their last years here at Mary Star. The Junior Class has chosen the name Victorious. They are a class of achievers and faith filled students that want to expand and enrich their high school lives. They promote hard work, dedication and prayer, and trust in the belief that anything is possible with God. Their class symbol is the Laurel Wreath. Greek and Roman history honored the wreath as a sign of victory, success or worthy recognition. The Juniors have chosen this name and symbol to

represent their class and to hopefully give light to their futures as children of God. They will conclude with a luncheon sponsored by the Sophomore Class at Ports ‘O Call Restaurant. Parents, family and friends are invited to attend. Please send RSVP forms to the finance office by January 22nd.

CAREER DAY SPEAKERS WANTED!There are still opportunities for parents, alumni and friends of Mary Star to share their career experiences with our students at the annual Career Day on February 5, 2016! Please contact Ms. Pichler through the Main Office or email [email protected]. We look forward to a wonderful day with diverse speakers and career interests represented. Please download the attachment for additional information and to sign up. Feel free to share the invitation with family, friends, and colleagues who would add to our Career Day.

Happy New Year! A new semester is here, with the opportunity for students to rededicate themselves to academic excellence. Our teachers are ready and eager to help students be their academic best with tutoring before and/or after school and often times can offer online help, especially in math. Please consult individual teachers’ web pages for tutoring times or, best of all, encourage your student to speak personally with teach-ers to get the help they need to be successful.

Semester Grades of D or F – Students with a semester grade of F must retake the course at Mary Star in order to make up deficient credits. Mary Star summer school offerings will be included in re-registration packets distributed in March. Students with a semester grade of D who wish to remain eligible for a 4-year university after graduation must remediate the course to achieve a grade of C or higher. This can be done either at Mary Star or local public school district adult schools. To attend a local adult school, please contact the appropriate grade level counselor as soon as possible. For seniors needing to remediate missing credits, be aware that adult school classes fill quickly. Counselors have the proper paperwork necessary to register for any of the LAUSD adult schools. Please contact grade level counselors to answer your specific questions.

SAVE THE DATE – January 11 - FAFSA Workshop for SENIOR PARENTS – Harbor College Financial Aid staff will present information for parents of seniors on completing the online FAFSA (Free Application for Feder-al Student Aid) application. The workshop will be held on MONDAY, JANUARY 11 at 7:00 PM in Room 117. Handouts will be provided, but please bring additional notepaper. The 2016-2017 FAFSA application opens on January 1, 2016 and will utilize your 2015 tax information.

PSAT Results – PSAT 8/9 and PSAT/NMSQT results from the October testing day will arrive at Mary Star High School in January. Grade level counselors will schedule classroom visits to distribute the test results. Fresh-man, sophomore and junior students who took the PSAT can access My College QuickStep to access college planning and SAT information. Contact your student’s grade level counselor if you have further questions once you receive the results and analysis.

Career Day is scheduled for Friday, February 5, 2016. In late January, students will select five career presen-tations to attend from the list of speakers. There is still a need for speakers and interested parents, alumni, and friends of Mary Star can download the Career Day Speaker Form and return it to MSHS by January 15 to be included as a speaker this year. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about new careers, gather information about the education and experience pathways to careers that interest them, and begin to formulate their own future plans. Please note that Career Day is a special schedule day and students are released at 11:20 AM.

Happy New Year, students!

Winter Dress Code: Christmas vacation is an excellent time for students and parents to go shopping for school-approved winter wear because it's getting cold outside!

Students are reminded that only "official Mary Star outerwear may be worn" e.g. letterman jacket, uniform pullover, uniform sweater, uniform jacket, Mary Star crewneck sweatshirt or class sweatshirt. Please see me or read page 50 in the Student Parent Handbook. All jackets and outerwear must be within uniform code and purchased through Norman's clothing store located at 371 West 6th Street in San Pedro (tel. 310-832-8342). Students may wear a school scarf available for purchase from Ms. Pichler for $5. Mittens or blankets or non-school scarfs are not permitted in class. Detentions will be issued for Dress Code violations.

Female students should be aware that wearing pants or even nylons under their skirts or shorts are not permitted. Ladies may wear tights under skirts only. Required Uniform: Reminder that MSHS Required Uniform is worn on Mass and other special days such as the Academic Recognition Assemblies. Please mark your calendar that students must wear the Required Uniform on January 15, 21 and 29; February 10; March 3, 17 and 18; April 8, 14 and 21; May 12, 16 and 27.

Tardy: Lastly but most importantly, students must be on time to school in the mornings and to class be-tween periods and after breaks. The passing periods give students plenty of time to access their lockers. Students and parents are encouraged to carefully review the Tardiness policy (page 30) in the Student Parent Handbook). Those who are late for classes during the school day are unexcused, and will receive a Dean’s Detention.

Valuables: Students - leave your cell phones, iPods, and laptops, and other valuables locked in your locker at all times! Preferably - do not bring them to school! The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items. For your own safety, students should NEVER give their locker combination to anyone or allow others access to their lockers.

Athletics: All students are expected to act respectfully and cheer on our teams with Mary Star pride!

Campus Ministry Chance Liu – Junior

This past December, Mary star students participated in a successful toy drive, fulfilling their call as Catholics to give alms and care for their less fortunate brothers and sisters by buying toys for the children of the community. As the Stars truly showed a display of generosity by taking the chance to serve, they were also given an opportunity to shine even brighter through the sacrament of reconciliation. To make things better, the Stars attended mass in remembrance of the Immaculate Conception and Mother Mary’s confident “yes” to God. This month, the students also said a confident “yes” in choosing to serve without question and fulfilling their duties as Catholics even in the midst of the always-intimidating finals.

Major School Network UpgradeA major Mary Star of the Sea High School campus network update is scheduled for this Christmas break. Under the leadership of John Reyes, Director of Educational Technology for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, 85 Archdiocese schools formed a Consortium to seek E-Rate funding for network infrastructure improve-ments. Mary Star of the Sea High School will be receiving a partial funding for this project as a participant of the Archdiocese Consortium. Still, the bigger portion of the cost of this project will be paid directly by the school so we appreciate the generosity of our school donors, alumni, and supporters who may contribute financially to make this upgrade possible.

What will this project accomplish? The driving idea behind this project was to “future proof” the network infrastructure at our high school campus. The main school building will be connected to the gymnasium building via a fiber optic network connection. Our current 100 Mbps (megabits per second) network switch-es and cabling will be upgraded to 1000 Mbps equipment. In addition, each classroom will be equipped with a modern wireless access point that supports the latest Wi-Fi standard called “ac” capable of speeds up to three times faster than the previous Wi-Fi standard. Moreover, the new Wi-Fi access points will be capable to serve a much larger number of wireless network devices.

What does it mean to students and teachers? The new network infrastructure will make our campus ready for such initiatives as BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) or a similar school-wide student device program. The teachers should notice an improvement in network performance, especially when it comes to streaming video and other high-demand network applications. We appreciate your patience and understanding should you be impacted by temporary network service interruptions during construction.

Mary Star of the Sea High School teaches students not only to participate in the life of the Church, but also to live their faith through Christ-like charity and service. As a student who enjoys serving others, Senior Karina Amezcua is active within the San Pedro community. She completes most of her community service hours as an acolyte, server during the Lenten meal, vocation bible school group leader, and a summer camp leader.

Shining Stars

As a dedicated acolyte, she altar serves at the evening Mass every Saturday, and occasionally trains younger servers as well. Besides serving at Mass, Karina has served at

weddings, funerals, and Benedictions. For the past three years, she also volunteers at a dinner provided by Christian Care every Friday evening during Lent. This includes setting up tables, serving the meal, and helping clean up afterwards. Karina is also involved in a couple summer programs that revolve around teaching children the grace of God while having fun. For two years as a group leader at Mary Star’s Vocation Bible School, she has supervised children ranging from five to twelve years old. In addition to contributing her time to the Mary Star Parish, she also helps at St. Peter’s Church. For four years, she has volunteered at the annual summer camp as a group leader coordinating games, helping with arts and crafts and supervising children ages eight to fourteen.

Karina has over 800 Christian Service hours with the vast majority coming from her dedication to Catholic parishes in San Pedro. Without a doubt, she is living her faith through Christ-like charity and service.

Alumni NewsMary Star of the Sea High School

By Marguerite (Mantellino) Hussey, Class of 1957

It has been a long time since one of our family members has walked the halls of Mary Star of the Sea High School. However, one never forgets your established years as an elementary, middle, or high school student at Mary Star of the Sea. As a family who had 5 members graduate from Mary Star High School, they each moved on with confidence, ambition and gratitude.

Marguerite (Mantellino) Hussey graduated in 1957. She was chosen as the “Queen of Sports” as she participated in every available sports program while she was at Mary Star, and she excelled in each of them. Her brother Paul Mantellino graduated in 1961 from Mary Star, where he successfully excelled in baseball. After graduation he went onto Cal Poly Pomona and began a baseball career with them. Once he graduated he continued in baseball by establishing a team, the “Mary Star of the Sea Stars” in the Connie Mack League, where he coached.

Cover Story

Marguerite married after high school to San Pedro insurance agent, Jim Hussey. They had 3 children, John, Paula and Nancy. Each of their children started in elementary, were promoted to middle school, and then each graduated from Mary Star of the Sea High School. John played baseball at Mary Star and graduated in 1982 and Paula and Nancy were on the cheerleading teams. Paula graduated in 1983 and Nancy in 1987. John went onto college at Idaho State University and found a passion for “refereeing” football games. He has worked his way up from flag football games to the NFL, where he just received a promotion to “head referee” - also known as “a white hat”. Paula and Nancy both attended USC after their individual graduations. Paula received a degree in Business and Nancy in Education. They married two other USC graduates and San Pedro-based men: Paula to David Head and Nancy to Jeff Perez.

The next generation consists of two children for John and his wife, Paula. Jimmy is on his way to college at the University of San Diego, and Emily finishing her high school education. Paula and Dave had 2 sons, Bradley a United States Air Force Pilot and USC graduate, and Brian a candidate for his master’s degree from Oregon State University. Nancy and Jeff’s two children are also continuing their education: Mackenzie is a sophomore at the University of Missouri where she is a member of the woman’s golf team, and Matthew is completing his high school degree and playing on the school’s men’s golf team.

The foundation that Mary Star of the Sea Schools gave to each and everyone of us, in our family, is undeniable. We are all proud to say we are Mary Star of the Sea Stars and we are eternally grateful for the “family” attitude that encompasses the Mary Star of the Sea education.

For the 2016 baseball season, Mary Star of the Sea High School will have a new coach: alumnus and former coach Rick Ibarra. His first stint was very successful as he lead the 2002 team to the CIF Championship Game, that year’s team is the only in school history to make it to the Championship Game and still holds the school record for most wins. Also that year Coach Ibarra was named the South Bay Coach of the Year by the Los Angeles Times and the Daily Breeze and selected to coach the South Bay Athletic Club All Star Classic.

Rick left Mary Star as a coach in 2004, moving on to coach baseball at Los Angeles Harbor College as an assistant; in 2007 Harbor College made the 2007 Super Regionals. Over his

years at Harbor he held multiple positions and had multiple responsibilities as he was the pitching coach, third base coach, offensive coach, infield coach, Director of Field Maintenance, and Director of Baseball Operations.

Through the years he has volunteered extensively to promote youth athletics at organizations including Torrance American Baseball (2013 All-Star Team Finished Second in the World), Eastview Little League, San Pedro Girls Softball Association, multiple Travel Ball organizations as well as Palos Verdes Youth Football and Cheer. Rick served as Camp Director (1993-2014) for former L.A. Dodgers coach Mark Cresse School of Baseball instructing children ages 5 to 16 on all aspects of baseball. In 1996, Coach Ibarra worked as an assistant coach at Narbonne High School and competed in the CIF City Championship Game at Dodger Stadium (1996).

Now as head baseball coach of Mary Star once again, Rick hopes to build success for these young men on and off the field. He explains, “Coming back to Mary Star has been a dream of mine and I want to continue the Mary Star tradition.” With this he brings a culture of taking pride in your work and effort, whether it is during practice or doing homework. “I want them to understand that putting on that uniform and representing Mary Star means something,” he said. “I am proud that I graduated from Mary Star and blessed to be part of this faculty for almost 20 years.”

Class of 1958 Does it Again

The Class of 1958’s Yearly LunchOn December 5th, 2015 the Class of 1958 held its annual lunch at Ports O’Call Restaurant. This year twenty four members came together to reminisce about the good ol’ days of high school as well as catching up on what has happened since – children, grandchildren, etc. They also remembered those in their class who have passed away with a prayer and, of course, stories of the past. Time flies when you’re catching up with old friends! All Class of 1958 alumni are welcome to come next year, as the annual lunch is held every first Saturday in December at Ports O’Call Restaurant in San Pedro.

Fermin Lasuen Class of 1968 gather for a nice meal and some old High School stories. For the past two Christmas Holidays they have gathered to collect new toys to donate to the Mary Star High School Toy Drive. They are extremely happy to help needy families and children during this holiday season.
