MY MERCY TRIP

In the December and January issues of this newsletter, I shared with you about the spiritual and corporalworks of mercy, which are our emphases during this Jubilee Year of Mercy.

I decided I better take my own advice, and thus made a special outreach of mercy from January 24 toJanuary 30. I was one of 10 men on a mission trip to Jacob’s Ladder in Moneague, Jamaica. I can hear you now:“Poor Father Dan, going to Jamaica while we were here stuck dealing with a foot of snow!” Well, give me achance to explain.

Jacob’s Ladder is a Mustard Seed Community (www.mustardseed.com), founded by Monsignor GregoryRamkissoon, a priest of the Diocese of Kingston, Jamaica. Jacob’s Ladder is a village for 85 adults who havebeen cast aside by society due to their severe mental and physical handicaps. It is located in a remote area in themiddle of the island, on the site of a former bauxite mine. Jacob’s Ladder, a thrown-away piece of land inhabitedby thrown-away people, is a little piece of heaven on earth.

Our mission trip’s objective was both to interact with the residents and staff of the village and also tomake further progress in the construction of several cottages for the residents.

Interaction with the village’s residents was often informal (many residents were free and able to interactwith us at the construction site, and we had a pickup soccer game) and formal (daily rosary, and a special concertthey held for us on Wednesday evening). The group rosary was a marvel. Such repetitive prayer was accessibleto a lot of them. And when the rosary ended, staff members led everyone in 25 minutes of rousing songs in praiseto God with each of the residents joining in on some hand held percussion instrument, or dancing, or both. Theplace was full of God’s Spirit.

The construction work was hard and hot and a joy. The ten of us, of widely varying building skills,showed lots of patience and had a lot of good-natured kidding. I personally became a master of scaffolding, andused a reciprocating saw and a nail gun without losing any fingers.

As usual with such experiences, we received more than we gave on this mission of mercy. It got me outof my comfort zone to good effect for all involved. I hope it moves you to extraordinary acts of mercy this yearas well. Make it happen.

P.S. No hot water, curried goat, a power outage and an occasional Red Stripe were also part of the trip.

February 2016 Financial News Notes:The Lenten Season is now upon us . . . As we prepare for God through prayer, penance, repentance,

almsgiving, and self-denial, let's "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful" Luke 6:36 . . . in this Year ofMercy.

We have tried to keep the facilities and grounds safe for you. I would like to thank the many people whogo the extra mile to take care of the residual ice and snow after our grounds crew has cleared the lots andsidewalks. It is important to watch out for the refreezing "black ice". Please be careful! If you see somedangerous areas, please let me know. Mary Queen must keep our grounds safe. There is a binder at the church(janitor closet) school (boiler room) and parish office (garage closet) to record any snow or ice removalperformed. Thanks, Walter

Since we have one pledge for our offertory (stewardship of treasure) to pay all our church bills (includingthe debt payments), we have been sending out informational letters to each family who pledged to showupcoming activities at MQ and the pledge and payment amounts.

Mark your calendars . . . Our third annual spring fundraiser called "Night of Angels" will be on Friday,April 29th at The Round Barn Stable of Memories at Red Mile. Please watch the bulletin, website, etc. for details.There will be food and refreshments, silent and live auctions, and a raffle. Last year the event made about $39,000for our school building debt.

Mark your calendars . . . Festival 2016 . . . The date will be September 30 / October 1. We are looking forcommittee chairs. Any and all volunteers are welcome. We need you.

The 2016-2017 budgets are in process . . . we will be incorporating the newly approved goals andobjectives in the budgetary requests.

The debt on the school is $5,192,030 for the tax exempt loan and $198,291 for the taxable loan. Theseloans are with Kentucky Bank.

The Fish Fries begin on Friday, February 12th and run each Friday through March 18th. Any and allvolunteers are needed and welcome. I look forward to seeing you there. 2015 year end donation statement - This year Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary again sent out its recordof your charitable contributions for 2015 via email (mqhrnews@cdlex.org) January 14 for those who we had agood email, unless we received a notice to send via USPS mail. This is the customary letter including thedonations made for tax deductions for 2015. If we didn’t have a good email or you donated stock, we sent throughUSPS mail. This method saved Mary Queen the postage on nearly 700 mailings. Thanks so much for yourcontributions to Mary Queen.

PRESCHOOL NEWSCatholic Schools Week was wonderful. We had agreat time celebrating our school and ended the weekplaying bingo with our middle school buddies. Thankyou to all who made this week possible.

In Preschool we have been very busy learning aboutthe season of Winter and hibernation. We celebratedour 100th day of School with lots of counting and amarshmallow party. We explored prehistoric times inour dinosaur unit and honored Dr. Martin LutherKing for his wonderful contributions to our country.Preschool had fun with fairy tales and we watched tosee if the groundhog saw his shadow after each childtook a turn predicting what the groundhog would seeor not see.

Mary Queen Cross Country TeamBoys and girls from Mary Queen School formed a Cross Country team this past fall to include kids from 3rdthrough 8th grade. The kids competed in meets from August to October in Lexington and surroundingcommunities to include Georgetown, Frankfort, Paris, and Versailles. Throughout the crosss country season thekids worked hard on building their endurance by running faster and farther. The kids showed so much courageand heart running in rain, heat, and even the cold. We enjoyed coming together for practices and meets andbecoming a true team!

Toyota Bluegrass Miracle LeagueMary Queen’s Cross Country team volunteered one Saturday afternoon to help the Toyota Bluegrass MiracleLeague. Boy Scout Troop 282 Chartered by Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary

Troop 282 Activities On January 9th, the troop had their annual lock-in. For those who may not have known, the lock-in is an event in which the troop gets together to plan activities and campouts for the whole year. Afterwards, the scouts spent the night socializing, playing games, watching movies, and making their own personal pizzas.

On January 16th, Scouts Daniel Balko, Nate Carpenter, Alex Klement, and Scoutmaster John Rotramel and Assistant Scoutmaster Chris Boots, volunteered to teach knots, lashings, orienteering, tent-pitching and fire building to the Webelos and Cub Scouts of Pack 282. They now have new skills to climb their way up the ranks in Boy Scouting.

He achieved the rank of Eagle in 1998 as did his brother Vince, who earned his Eagle in 1993. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a journalism degree in 2002. He works as a photojournalist for the Northwest Florida Daily Newspaper, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Notably, Nick and Vince, in 2004, hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. He says "there is no doubt Scouting helped me and my brother hike all of the 2,147 miles."

BUILDIn past newsletters I have talked about how BUILD hasa yearly cycle to listen to people’s problems, choose aproblem to work on, research the problem and find aproven solution, and then bring the official who has thepower to make that change to the Nehemiah Actionwhere we have the power of our people present.

At this time the BUILD research committees areworking hard to learn more about the issues by talkingto the experts, strategizing and doing power analysis,and building networks of allies. In the congregationswe are building our Justice Ministry Networks byconnecting people’s self interest to the issues of doingjustice, injustice of payday lending, crime and violence,and help for those suffering from mental illnesses.

In order to make change we need organized people tostand together. The events coming up to grow andstrengthen our justice ministry are:

� Justice Ministry Network meeting on Monday,Feb. 22, 7 PM in the ELC/school library. We’lllearn about the issue updates and build ournetworks by choosing names of who we’ll inviteto attend the Nehemiah Action. We’ll haverefreshments and a great evening to grow ourjustice ministry at MQHR.

� Commissioning at all the Feb. 27-28 Masses forJustice Ministry Network Members. We will beblessed and sent to invite others to join us at theNehemiah Action.

� Rally for all Justice Ministry Network Memberswill be on Monday, March 14, 7 PM atConsolidated Baptist. We will get updates on theissues and officials attendance and learn about theimportance and urgency of getting people toattend the Nehemiah Action.

� Nehemiah Action is Tuesday, April 12, 7 PM atHeritage Hall. At this time we will have 2000people from all over Lexington, 400 fromMQHR, standing together to ask our officials tomake changes that will help Lexington to becomea City of God where people have what they needto live full lives - a city where the poor aren’tprayed upon by payday lenders, where people aresafe in their neighborhoods, free of violence, andwhere people with mental illnesses and theirfamilies have help and support to live full lives.

Do something different and challenging this year forLent - commit to participating in BUILD and doingjustice for Lent. Put Tuesday, April 12 on yourcalendar and attend the Nehemiah Action. Refugee MinistryLast October Fr. Dan announced to the 8:15 Mass thata large family of 12 Congolese refugees would berelocating to Lexington after 4 years in a Ugandanrefugee camp and he invited us to welcome them toLexington and to Mary Queen. No one could haveanticipated what the Holy Spirit had in mind for us aswe accepted this invitation and gift when we said“yes”.

That weekend there were index cards with items thatthe family would need for their 2 apartments:furniture, bedding, linens, kitchenware, lamps,cleaning supplies, etc. People were so generous asthey brought in all these items and donated cash to fillin the gaps to get them started. Several people alsosigned up to work with the family, to get to knowthem, bring them to Mass, etc. As we started welearned so much about what it meant to start fromscratch in a new city. They needed support and ridesto get social security numbers, food stamps, doctorappointments, and get enrolled in schools. Theyneeded clothing for school and cold weather. Theyneeded to learn how to ride the bus, how to shop andcook, how to use a refrigerator and furnace.

We got them to 8:15 Mass every week and some ofthem joined the choir. It wasn’t long before otherCongolese somehow learned that we gave rides to“Catholic Mass” and showed up in the parking lotasking for rides to Mass. Our group of 1 family of 12became 3 families, and we were bringing 19 or so toMass each Sunday. We reached out to these familiesas well, making sure they had winter clothing,religious articles for their home, Christmas trees andcreches, and friends.

The Evangelization committee invited the families toa Thanksgiving party and the Youth Group had aChristmas party for them. The volunteers that havebeen working so closely with the families have fallenhead over heels in love with them! We havewelcomed them into our homes and shared ourfamilies and traditions. One worked to secure a $5000grant from Southland Christian Church, enabling thefamily to ease into the huge costs of supporting sucha large family in Lexington. Most of the kids havesettled into school and we are now working with the

older ones to help them secure jobs so they cansupport their family. One is deaf and it looks like shewill be enrolling in the School for the Deaf inDanville, what a blessing! In just 3 months they, andwe have come so far.

But there are more Catholic refugees in Lexingtonwho are not connected with the Church or a parish.We hear Pope Francis when he says, “May theChurch be a place of God’s mercy and hope, where allfeel welcome, loved, forgiven, and encouraged, theChurch must be with doors wide open so that all mayenter. And we must go out through these doors andproclaim the Gospel”. (General audience, June 12,2013) So, through more work of the Holy Spirit, andholy women of faith, we have arranged for a bus topick up refugees and anyone who needs a ride tochurch from 5 different neighborhoods to come to the8:15 and 9:30 Masses. We will build and grow thisand reassess in 3 months and see what the Holy Spiritis leading us to at that time.

The Diocese is working to build a leadership groupfrom the Catholic refugee families to listen to whattheir needs are and find a way to help them to connectto community, worship, formation, Sacraments, etc.

The Holy Spirit is definitely leading this ministry. It“dropped in our laps” one weekend in October, andhas changed the lives of the refugee families andmany of us at MQHR forever. One volunteer says, “Ihave been involved in lots of worthwhileorganizations, on boards, fund raising, benefits, etc.,and while they were great causes, left me feeling alittle empty. But, I have fallen in love with therefugees! If I could, I would quit my job and do thisfull time, it is so rewarding to be with them on theirjourney”.

The core group of volunteers met Feb. 5 for amorning of reflection on our journey these past 3months. We shared the many blessings we havereceived, the parish has received, and the refugeeshave received by our being together. Some mentionedare: appreciation and gratitude for what we have, joyin sharing in the joy of the people starting their newlives, learning patience, joy in watching them gainindependence as they get in school and jobs, meetingthe other volunteers and feeling more connected tothe parish and our faith, receiving their love, gratitude

and appreciation, being a part of a journey with theHoly Spirit and all the gifts that were given, exposingthe parish to other cultures, and many more blessings!

Going forward some of the things we would like to doare: grow this ministry in more volunteers so we canminister to even more refugee families, we want tobe a parish that welcomes them and is a place wherethey can grow in their faith, we want to be theirpartners, mentors and friends more than benefactorsas they get established, we want to LISTEN to theirhopes and dreams and walk with them to make themhappen, they need jobs and the parish may have greatresources in finding positions for them, and we can beadvocates and help them navigate the systems thatcan be so difficult.

We look forward to where the Spirit continues to leadus. So many blessings have been received and somany more to come!

RecipesTuscan-Style Roasted Asparagus Recipe

1-1/2 pounds fresh asparagus, trimmed 1-1/2 cups grape tomatoes, halved3 tablespoons pine nuts 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided2 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon kosher salt1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon lemon juice1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel

Preheat oven to 400°. Place the asparagus, tomatoes and pine nuts on a foil-lined 15x10x1-in. baking pan. Mix 2 tablespoons oil, garlic, salt and pepper; add to asparagus and toss to coat. Bake 15-20 minutes or just untilasparagus is tender. Drizzle with remaining oil and the lemon juice; sprinkle with cheese and lemon peel. Tossto combine. Yield: 8 servings.

Salmon with a Brown Sugar Glaze1 tablespoon brown sugar 2 teaspoons butter1 teaspoon honey 1 tablespoon olive oil1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon reduced-sodium soy sauce1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper1 salmon fillet (2-1/2 pounds)

In a small saucepan over medium heat, cook and stir the brown sugar, butter and honey until melted. Removefrom the heat; whisk in the oil, mustard, soy sauce, salt and pepper. Cool for 5 minutes. Place salmon in a largefoil-lined baking pan; spoon brown sugar mixture over salmon. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 20-25 minutes oruntil fish flakes easily with a fork. Yield: 8 servings.

Baby Peas w/Bacon & Almonds3-1/2 Cups Green Giant Valley Fresh Steamers frozen sweet peas (from 2 - 12 oz. bags)2 slices bacon, chopped 2 T. finely chopped onion1/4 C. slivered almonds 2 T. butter1/2 tsp. salt Dash pepper

In a 10-inch skillet, cook bacon over medium-high heat 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until crisp. Removebacon from skillet with slotted spooon; drain on paper towels. Add onion and almonds to bacon drippings inskillet; cook over medium-high heat 3 to 4 minutes, stirring frequently, until onion is tender and almonds arelightly browned. Remove from skillet. In same skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add cooked peas,bacon, onion, almonds, salt and pepper; toss. Serves 6.

Heat oven to 350°. Spray square baking dish, 9x9x2 inches, with cooking spray. Mix all ingredients except greenonions. Spread evenly in baking dish. Bake uncovered 40 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetablesare tender and golden brown. Sprinkle with green onions and serve.
