Annual Catholic Appeal Since 1949, our Archbishop has asked the members of the Church of St. Louis to support the mission and ministries of the Archdiocese through an annual collection which is now called the Annual Catholic Appeal. As I wrote in a bulletin article last month, I am happy to report to you our parish’s participation in the Appeal. Overall, 44,000 households within the Archdiocese donated more than $15M in gifts and pledges to this year’s appeal. Our parishioners pledged $87,637 to the Appeal, which surpassed our parish goal by $7,000. 55 new donors made a first- time pledge and 33% of our pledge cards were returned. Each of those numbers show an increase from previous years. Thank you once again for being so generous in responding to the Appeal, especially during these extremely difficult times as the bond of trust with the Church and its leaders has been broken and challenged. A special word of thanks goes out to Paul Schulte and his team of volunteers for all their efforts.

As I sit reading Bishop Barron’s book a “Letter to a Suffering Church.” Has our Country experienced some of the same type of problems as our Church? The following are not my words (Author Unknown); and I hope no one is put off. It’s just an attempt to highlight some of the confusion in our country and our Church. So let me get this straight: we’re a nation that accepts pornography but hates abuse. A nation that doesn’t believe in gender but fights for women’s rights. We’re a nation that believes that no child should be left behind but we have aborted over 60 million. We’re a nation where heroes have died so our flag could fly over a free nation, but then we give the title “heroes” to wealthy athletes who kneel in disrespect. We’re a nation where political parties ignore the corruption of their own party while condemning the corruption of the other. We’re a nation of laws, yet we’re a nation where that only applies if you’re not politically powerful. We’re a nation that has printed “In God we trust” on our money but we’re a nation where the ACLU sues people who make His name known in public. We’re the “greatest” nation on earth yet we consume more antidepressants than any other nation in the world. We’re a nation that pledges we’re “one” yet we’re a nation of aggressive division. And we wonder why there is so much confusion? We can do better as a nation and a Church.

This month our Spotlight is on a woman who is an active parishioner. She is a member of the choir and is active in the ACTS community. She and her husband served on Parish Council several years ago. She and her husband have 2 grown children who live out of state. She gives her garage space to her husband who has classic cars parked inside. She also plays pickle ball. If you do not know her, you should. She is a loving soul and a great friend. Look on page 2 to see who this woman is.

The parish staff and Ministry of Consolation are planning a very special Mass on Saturday, November 2nd at 8:30AM. This year, the Mass is on All Souls Day. This Mass of Remembrance honors our deceased. We prayerfully hope that parishioners and families/friends of parishioners, no matter how long ago or recent their loss, will attend. A candle ceremony is a very special part of this Mass. There will be a reception in the parish hall following Mass. Please call the parish office, letting us know how many will attend the reception for food planning purposes. Finally, we treasure the pictures of loved ones which we will place in church throughout November. Some guidelines are requested, if possible: unframed and 5 x 7” or smaller, brought to the office within the last couple of weeks of this month (October). Please label on the back, the name of the person to whom we should return your picture (will be returned in early December). Thank you for the opportunity to share in the memory of your loved ones. May Our Lord comfort us, who grieve.

All of the Major Projects for 2018 -2019 are completed except for the access control for church doors and the PSR intercom (intruder alert). Some additional review is required. The projects completed are: new phone system for parish office/property; tuck pointing various masonry walls; repair asphalt, fill cracks, sealing and striping parking lots. There were necessary items added to the Major Projects: kitchen walk-in cooler compressor, storage closets in Church Hall, mechanical equipment in rectory, and removal of several diseased trees. Additional NO PARKING signs will also be installed. Avoid parking in these areas. It is necessary for these areas to be clear for access by EMS vehicles when called. There is ample parking adjacent to the Reilly Center. From the most remote parking space from the Reilly Center to the church vestibule is 30 yards (90 steps) additional than from the most remote parking space in front of the church. Be compassionate; walk a little more. It may be YOU in need of help!

ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE COMMISSION

Carl Cooper 200-9138 [email protected] During the month of October, we have several things

happening: Modern life provides few opportunities to go deeper into our relationship with God through prayer. Even retreats are difficult to squeeze in. Yet Jesus still invites us “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” (Mark 6:31). On Saturday morning, October 12, for four hours, the Mary Mother Contemplative Prayer community will gather at the Maria Center on Ripa in St. Louis to do just that. They will participate in an Immersion Experience into Contemplative Silence and Solitude going deeper into their personal relationship with God. Keep the evenings of October 15 and 22 open. These are the nights of the Spiritual Gifts Inventory. More information to come. On Saturday evening, October 25, we will, again, have “Live from Mary Mother - It’s Saturday Night.” This month it will be led by Fr. Chuck Barthel. He will take us on “A Walk Through the Mass.” As always, it will begin with dinner after the 4:30 Mass. All are welcome. You can sign up for these events on Sign Up Genius at www.marymother.org..

HAVE YOU TOLD SOMEONE

TODAY THAT YOU

LOVE THEM?

I think about the elderly a lot. Maybe it's because of my age, which is 65 years old. It's weird to think of myself as elderly as my soul feels like I'm 22 years old. Aging changes us all. In some ways, I'm better. Physically I'm slower and worse. Bodily ailments hit us all sooner or later no matter how well we care for our bodies. I'm a part time musician and I play music in many retirement homes. People ask me if I'm a new resident. Oh my. The music relieves loneliness at least for an hour during the day. Most of the elderlyfor whom I play are upbeat even though their bodies have "slipped" a bit. Loneliness is a big issue for the homebound elderly. Our souls need companionship of others. Good mental health needs companionship and human presence. Be present for the people in your life and at places where elderly wait just for someone to talk to.

One of the blessings of being associated with the Christian Service Commission is my exposure to countless opportunities to serve our mission. Our sister parish, St. Alphonsus Liguori “Rock” Church is hosting a trivia night for the Institute for Peace and Justice on Friday October 18. The doors of the church will open at 6:00pm and the trivia begins at 7:00pm. The cost is only $25.00. Check out www.peaceandjusticeinstitute.org for registration information. As we strive to be good stewards of Mother Earth, please note that Dr. Peter Raven, the beloved and respected former director of the Missouri Botanical Gardens will be addressing environmental concerns at the College Church on October 6, from 12:00-1:30 pm (after the 10:30 am Sun-day Mass). We need to start gearing up for the Rock Church Christmas program. Contact Lori Fick if you can help make a wonderful Christmas for those we are blessed to serve at the “Rock Church.” The St. Anthony food pantry needs more volunteers during the week for a variety of jobs including packing meal boxes, organizing food storage, working during pantry hours and picking up food donations. If you cannot commit to a regular volunteer schedule, you are encouraged to serve as a substitute. Contact Rob Telthorst for more information. Finally, on October 26 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, Fontbonne University is holding a workshop titled “Persistence,

I often share about nursing the wounded warriors in Germany. I share because of the twist of the matter. The matter was that our group was forced to take an ear to the “compassion fatigue” that plagued the first group of Navy medical. The twist was that my experience was different. It turns out I received far more from the soldiers than what was taken from me. To witness the strength of character of those soldiers was to witness courage and relentless perseverance in an unusually trying situation. They had survived multiple traumas yet were grateful. Those were not men who went blindly, but men who chose a path, one they believed in, despite all reasons to be angry. Attending Mass is similar. I may start by going out of obligation, but end up getting so much more out of it. The Liturgy gives us the opportunity to experience God’s presence directly, to come to union with Him in the Holy Eucharist, with witnesses that validate His relationship with us. A beautiful twist indeed.

TITHING

Hello Mary Mother! It is with great pleasure that I am able to report that the Youth Commission has been very active lately! Towards the culmination of August, we opened a sock, hat and glove drive for St. Vincent DePaul Church. I’d like to invite you to take part in this service project. Collections will be open until the 27th of September. You can drop your donations off in the vestibule, inside the Rubbermaid container that says, “hats, gloves and socks.” On September 28, the donations will be delivered to St. Vincent DePaul Church. Also, on that day, we will be feeding the homeless. Our spiritual night was on September 8. We enjoyed Breakthrough - a new movie in which a faithful mother prays her son from the brink of death to be healed. It’s theme encouraged everyone to trust God and to rely on our faith to carry us through the inevitable adversity that coincides with life. The night was concluded with discussion and tasty snacks. In case you were not aware, the youth group has a special thing called The Prayer Tower. We write the names of sick and afflicted people in our parish on a wall in the annex. If you or a loved one is carrying a cross that may be a little too heavy, let me know! I’ll write your name on our prayer tower and every Wednesday night, we will pray over you at prayer group. I’m so excited for the upcoming events we have planned this fall season -- don’t hesitate to reach out to me with comments/questions. Thank you so much and may God bless you.
