ANNULMENTS Last Spring, His Holiness, Pope Francis overhauled the pro-cess of obtaining the Church Declaration of the Nullity of a Marriage that took place in a Catholic Church: -there is no fee for the process: -the NY Archdiocese can now handle the procedure, no matter where in the world the Marriage took place; -the process is reduced to one step rather than a second review that was formerly required; -the application form to begin the process may be downloaded from the in-ternet! If you were married in the Catholic Church and, re-grettably, the Marriage has broken up, you are invited to speak with one of our priests or the deacon.

Speak to us about Getting Married in Church

If you were married in a civil ceremony, we invite you to con-sider making vows in church. The priests and deacon are willing to work with you. MEN’S RETREAT Don’t miss this opportunity to sign up for Seton’s Annual Men’s Retreat. It will be held at the Mount Alvernia Retreat Center in nearby Wappingers Falls on the weekend of Jan 13-15. Don’t delay; drop off your $25 deposit to the rectory. Please include your name, address and phone number on registration form available at the rectory. The total recommended donation for the retreat is $175 (includes all meals) and is payable when you arrive at the retreat. If you need further information please contact Tom Engelhart, 914-245-9391, Walt Krisa, 914-248-5192 or Charles Angelillo, 914-245-9248.

Cold/Flu Season–Some Precautions! In order to ensure the health and wellbeing of all, some pre-cautions are advisable. If you are sick or showing symptoms of a cold/flu please remain at home for your own wellbeing and for the wellbeing of others in our parish family. There is no obligation to attend Mass if you are ill. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are to use the available hand sanitizer before entering the sanctuary to assist in the distri-bution of Holy Communion. As a general rule, close contact with others is best avoided. At the sign of peace, consider a kind word, or a bow, nod or a wave instead of shaking hands. Hand shaking is not required. Avoiding close contact with others will go a long way in helping prevent the spread of the common cold/flu. Thank you for your cooperation!

And the winner is . . . The winner of our December 50/50 Raffle Club, whose name was drawn Monday at noon by a Seton School 5th grad-er, is Christine Sisler. She won $587.50, 50% of the ticket sales. Congratulations!

That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord’s teaching by striv-ing with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial com-munion and by collaborating to meet the challenges facing hu-manity.

A Note about Becoming Sponsors For Baptism and Confirmation

It is a great honor to be asked to be a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation. The role of a “godparent” is to be an “other parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why sponsors must be practicing Catholics, 16 years of age or older (14 years old in the Archdiocese of New York), having received Catholic Confirmation and currently living a good Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that person must be in a valid Catholic Church marriage. One sponsor is required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two for Baptism, in which case one must be male and the other female. Parents may not be sponsors. A baptized non-Catholic may replace the second Baptism sponsor as a Christian witness. Non-Christians may not be Sponsors. Former Catholics may not be sponsors. A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification from his/her current parish. This is a declaration by a priest/deacon that the individual is qualified to be a sponsor according to Church Law. To be so certified, the individual must be a current parishioner of the particular parish where the certification is being sought, and be known to the priest/deacon as being a faithful practicing Cath-olic, attending Mass there weekly. Those away at college or graduate school or in the military should seek certification from their campus ministries or chaplains. Unfortunately, at times, family members or friends are cho-sen to be sponsors with good intentions, but are found to be ineligible according to Church Law. Also, more and more, people seem to think that they are still “parishioners” of their childhood parish, where they attended school or re-ceived sacraments years ago, while no longer living in the area or attending Mass there regularly. It is important for all individuals to be active members of their local Catholic faith communities. Here, at Seton, Certificates of Sponsorship are given by the pastor to registered members of the parish who are practicing Catholics, and who meet the above criteria. Please see the pastor after Mass on Saturday evening or Sunday to inquire about getting a certificate.

Meanings of Christmas Symbols and Traditions II

Christmas is filled with symbols, many of which have lost their Christian symbolism in a secular world.

HOLLY: Holly is an extremely hardy shrub that can be grown most places, making it one of the few plants that can withstand temperatures from 110 degrees F to – 40 degrees F. The four hundred species of holly, ranging from dwarf holly plants six inches high to huge holly trees seventy feet tall, are native to all the continents except Antarctica and Australia. Holly plants are noted for their attractive red berries and glossy, sharp-toothed green leaves which remain on the plant year round. The holly bush represents immortality, a trait that God has given to each human being. We are all destined to live forever, either with the Lord or separated from Him. The sharp-toothed edge of the holly leaf reminds Christians of the crown of thorns with which the soldiers mocked Our Lord during His Passion. They laughingly hailed Him as king, never realizing that He is, indeed, King of the universe. As a Christmas symbol, the red holly berry represents Christ's blood, shed for all people including those who reject Him.

MISTLETOE: Mistletoe is an aerial parasite that has no roots of its own. It lives off the tree to which it attaches itself and, without that tree, it would die. Mistletoe is a Christmas symbol of our love which derives from and exists only because God loves us. God, who is Love, created us in love and caused us to be able to love. Just as mistletoe may not acknowledge the tree which sustains it, so people may not acknowledge that the love of God sustains them. But if mistletoe were taken from the tree and any person removed from God’s love, both would die.

EVERGREENS: In cool climates, many plants are deciduous. That is, they lose their leaves in the fall, remain dead-looking all winter, and begin to sprout new growth in the spring. Evergreens are, broadly speaking, any type of plant that retains its green leaves or needles all year round. As Christian Christmas symbols, evergreens symbolize perseverance and resiliency to adversity. They remind us of Jesus' words, "The ones who persevere to the end shall be saved." Our faith must remain vibrant in all spiritual, economic, political, and social environments.

YULE LOG: A Yule log is a large log which is burned in the hearth as part of traditional Christmas celebrations. The Yule log goes back to pagan religions. Yule, which means sun or light, was a festival in honor of the sun god. The 25th of December was the birthday of the Roman god Mithras, who was known as the unconquered sun. Christians can see how the Lord used this symbol to prepare the pagans for Christ, the son of God, the eternal Light, the God of all gods. The Yule log is reminiscent of Christ’s cross, made of wood. As the burning log gives light as it “dies,” so the death of Christ on the cross brought our world from the darkness of sin into the light of faith. As the burning of the log was thought to bring health, fruitfulness, and prosperity and to ward off evil spirits, so Christ’s sacrificial death brought to those who believe in Him the fruits of the Holy Spirit, health of soul, and prosperity in their spiritual life. Through His death, Christ conquered all evil spirits for all time. Burning the Yule log for twelve days prepared the pagans to recall the twelve tribes of Israel, which preceded Christ, and the twelve apostles whom Our Lord sent to spread the fire of the Holy Spirit to light up all the world.
