Why engage Concerned Significant 0thers of people

who gamble into therapy? The American Psychological Association considers gambling disorders as “persistent and recurrent maladaptive gambling behaviour that disrupts personal, family, or vocational pursuits” (APA, 1994).

Concerned Significant Others (CSOS) of people who gamble are at risk for emotional, psychological and physical problems due to the stress of the situation.

Research has shown they can be helpful in motivating problem gamblers to enter treatment and influencing the outcome of treatment. (Makarchuk. K., Hodgins. D).

CRAFT and it’s origins

It is based on behavioural principles and cognitive-behavioural techniques

The earliest version of CRAFT was developed by Robert Myers and tested by Sisson and Azrin in the 1980’s.

It was designed so that therapists could teach family members relevant skills such as:

to reward sober behaviour, to communicate in a positive manner to take care of their own needs.
