NECESSARY REPETITION Spiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to repeat other teachers. Maybe there really aren’t that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human beings—like us—who need to hear the basics over and over. Consider today’s readings. People complain that God isn’t “fair,” and Ezekiel answers that God is more than fair. People choose their own fates, and people can change. Even evildoers can turn, do right, and live. “Actions speak louder than words.” A fresh new insight? Hardly. Paul tells the Philippians he would truly be encouraged if those who claimed to be believers would, in fact, look to others’ interests and not their own. “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” A novel idea? I don’t think so. In Jesus’ story of the farmer and his sons, everyone knows the one who said he wouldn’t work— but did—is way ahead of the one who said he would work, but didn’t. “Talk is cheap.” Heard that before?

REPETICIÓN NECESARIA Los maestros espirituales tienen la tendencia a repetir lo mismo, y de repetir lo que otros maestros enseñan. Tal vez es porque no hay muchas verdades diferentes. The Diaconate Formation Office will be hosting an infor- mation meeting for all men who are interested in finding

out more about becoming a permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Members of the Archdiocesan Diaconate For- mation Office will be present to explain the role of the deacon in the Church, the Diaconate Formation Program, and to answer any questions that participants might have. Men must be between the ages of 30 and 60 years of age to enter the formation program. It is important for men who are married to attend with their wives.

TESOROS DE NUESTRA FE

Las actas de los mártires son documentos de suma importancia en la Iglesia cristiana. En ellas se encuentra el testimonio de hombres y mujeres que con su sangre dieron testimonio del evangelio. En esta documentación encontramos el testimonio de quienes vieron y presenciaron su martirio. Por ejemplo, un soldado dice de los mártires: “Dormían en el suelo. No les vi quejarse en ningún momento y estuvieron todo el tiempo rezando y muy recogidos. . . magníficos, unos santos. . .”. Testimonios como éste eran comunes en los pri- meros siglos del cristianismo cuando en la Roma pagana se perseguía a la Iglesia primitiva. Lamentablemente, este testimonio no vie- ne de hace 17 ó 19 siglos, más bien, viene del siglo pasado, siglo en el cual la persecución de cristianos se multiplicó por todas partes del mundo produciendo más mártires que ningún otro siglo. El testimonio del soldado fue acerca del primer santo Argentino, Héctor Valdivielso Sáez y compañeros, quienes fueron asesinados por los comunistas en Asturias, España. Él fue uno de los más de 8000 cris- tianos martirizados en España, 30,000 en China, incontables en Latinoamérica y otros lugares durante el siglo pasado.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Over time, the severe form of one-chance penance collapsed under lack of enthusiasm for its burdens and its public nature. As ordi- nary Christians prayed for the great sinners, it must have occurred to them that they were sinners no less, and they required a form of penance also. The Irish came to the rescue, never having had a public form of penance, but inventing a system called “tariff penance,” which was completely private, available to everyone, and wildly popular. After a detailed confession, priest and penitent would lie on the floor before the altar and recite a number of psalms. The priest then pronounced a judgment, a tariff, giving a task or a prayer to complete before reconciliation. The surviving guidebooks for confessors make for hair-raising reading as the sins of which the Irish people were supposedly capable were catalogued and keyed to penances. Cattle or sheep rustling might require stripping down to sing psalms in an icy brook, for example, or adultery could be the occasion for rolling in a thicket of thorns. All of this might have stayed in Ireland had not the monks had a desire to travel, blazing across Europe with their theology and their rituals, and their sense that Christians needed strong medicine for sin and the assurance of God’s forgiveness.

Did You Know? Learn to stop inappropriate activity before it happens. Teach your child to respect the word “stop!” Teach your preschooler that “stop” means “stop,” and that your child has the right to stop people from touching his or her body. Obviously, exceptions will have to be made for doctors and parents, but even parents must listen when a child doesn’t want to be tickled or hugged. Reinforcing this excellent lesson gives your child the power to recognize -- and to stop -- “bad touching” by others if it should happen.
