SERVICE-LEARNING FACULTY FELLOW Mary Campbell SOCI 317: Racial & Ethnic Relations Dr. Campbell’s project involves developing a set of service-learning projects for her Racial and Ethnic Relations course (SOCI 317) that will have students involved with one or more community organizations, volunteering or doing research on their behalf. She plans to arrange several projects for the course, so that students can choose one that fits with their interests and works with their schedule and transportation. The central goal of this project will be to help students learn more about what nonprofit organizations seeking to reduce racial inequality are doing in the real world, so that they can see first-hand how people who care about the issues that they are reading about for class are actually turning their ideals into action. This connects to a central goal of the course, which is to help students learn how these “academic” issues have a real impact on their lives and the lives of others. Department of Sociology Mary is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Associate Head of the Sociology Department. She received her PhD from the University of Wisconsin and taught at the University of Iowa before moving to TAMU. Her teaching and research focuses on racial and ethnic identification and inequality in the United States. Her ongoing research includes projects on racial disparities in health and economic outcomes for multiracial groups and couples in interracial relationships, racial and gender disparities in interactions between doctors and patients, racial disparities in educational outcomes, and patterns of interracial relationships.

SOCI 317: Racial & Ethnic Relations

Dr. Campbell’s project involves developing a set of

service-learning projects for her Racial and Ethnic

Relations course (SOCI 317) that will have students

involved with one or more community organizations,

volunteering or doing research on their behalf. She plans

to arrange several projects for the course, so that students

can choose one that fits with their interests and works

with their schedule and transportation.

The central goal of this project will be to help students

learn more about what nonprofit organizations seeking to

reduce racial inequality are doing in the real world, so

that they can see first-hand how people who care about

the issues that they are reading about for class are

actually turning their ideals into action. This connects to

a central goal of the course, which is to help students

learn how these “academic” issues have a real impact on

their lives and the lives of others.
