  • Maruti 800

Maruti 800 is a small city car that was manufacturedby Maruti Suzuki in India from 1983 to 18 January2014.[3] First generation (SS80) was based on 1979Suzuki Fronte and had an 800cc F8B engine, hence themoniker. Widely regarded as the most inuential auto-mobile in India, about 2.87 million 800s were producedduring its course of which 2.66 million were sold in Indiaitself.[4]

With over 30 years of production, Maruti 800 remainsthe second longest production car in India, next only toHindustan Ambassador.

    1 History

Maruti 800 DX of the rst generation

In the 1980s and early 1990s, the name Maruti was syn-onymous with the Maruti 800. It remained the best sell-ing car in India until 2004; when Maruti Alto[5] took thecoveted title. It was also exported to a number of coun-tries in South Asia including Nepal, Bangladesh and SriLanka and was also available in Morocco and selectedEuropean markets, sold as the Suzuki Maruti. In an elab-orate ceremony held in NewDelhi on 14 December 1983,then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi handed over keys ofthe very rst car to Mr. Harpal Singh, who won the own-ership rights through a lucky draw. The original 800was based on the Suzuki Fronte SS80, but a modern-ized version using the body of the second generation Alto(SB308) was presented in 1986.

2 Phase outMaruti Suzuki had commenced upon a phase out ofMaruti 800 beginning in April 2010. Maruti Suzuki didnot have plans to upgrade it to Euro IV or BS IV emis-

sion norms. Starting April 2010, Maruti halted sales ofthe car in 13 major cities the four metros of Chennai,Delhi, Kolkatta, Mumbai and 9 other cities includingKanpur, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Agraand Surat, where the law made it mandatory for the vehi-cles sold to be Euro IV compliant.

Another reason cited was the relatively outdated modelsdeclining sales. Maruti 800 sales were down by 3.7%in the month of April 2010, when compared with April2009. Total sales of Maruti 800 was 33028 for the periodApril 2009 to March 2010.[6] The Indian Automobile in-dustry is the seventh largest in the world, with an an-nual production of over 4 million vehicles and exports ofabout 600,000.[7] In 2009, India emerged as Asia's fourthlargest exporter of automobiles, behind Japan, South Ko-rea and Thailand.[8]

3 ChangesAfter a full model change in 1986, the 800 has under-gone some minor face lifts but overall it still remains thesame as it was on introduction. The car has reported slip-ping sales in recent times, mainly due to the introductionof the Alto at a comparable price. The car produces ap-proximately 37 bhp (28 kW; 38 PS) of power and runs on12 inch wheels. Curb weight is 650 kg (1,433 lb) and fourpassengers (including the driver) t in. Maruti Suzuki hadearlier launched a version with a four-valve version of theengine producing 45 bhp (34 kW; 46 PS), coupled witha ve-speed manual transmission (currently found in theSuzuki Alto) but discontinued it after a couple of years.A Euro III emission compliant version of the car was re-leased in 2005 to meet Indian emissions regulations. LPG version of the vehicle was also released in 2008.As of September 2009, the company has yet to reach adecision regarding the manufacture of a Euro IV compli-ant version of the vehicle due because it would increasethe retail price. However even stricter emissions regula-tions which come into eect by April 2010, would man-date Euro IV compliance in major Indian cities includ-ing Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore and 2015

2016 for the remainder of the country. By 2005, Marutihad planned to phase out the 800 around 2010.[9][10] butit still on sale in October 2011. Its main competitor isthe cheaper Tata Nano (123,000 compared to 184,641Rupees) which has an 8 percent smaller exterior size anda noisier two-cylinder engine with less torque. But in theyear 2011, Maruti Suzuki declared to relaunch Maruti800 compliant Euro IV emission norms to tap small carmarket directly competing Tata Nano.[11]
