With the discovery of the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the ancient city of Na-ples, crossroads of the Mediterranean, at-tracted the attention of Grand Tour travel-lers who, began to visit the city. The sharp contrasts of the city still continue to inspire contemporary artists.
In the wake of this tradition and having pro-moted site-specific projects since 1974, Stu-dio Trisorio has commissioned Martin Parr to develop a project on this celebrated cit-yand its bay.
Today, as in the Eighteenth century, the bur-ied cities and Vesuvius “the great extermina-tor” – the dual concept of nature and history – are the region’s greatest attraction. Ranks of artists and writers- ranging from Goethe, Stendhal, Fragonard, Hubert Robert to the more recent Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, William Kentridge and Rebecca Horn – have left us important works and indelible pages

arising from their encounter with the city, its culture and its people.
If the focus has not changed in relation to the “aristocratic apprenticeship” of eighteenth century artists and intellectuals, the manner of travel and who exactly is travelling have indeed as travel has become possible for persons of all social and cultural levels.
In one of Europe’s most densely populated regions, the seaside resorts are particular-ly crowded during the month of August and at the week-ends, especially by local resi-dents with their anthropological rituals of gathering together - ironically documented by Parr’s attentive, amused gaze - but nev-er mingling with the foreigners who are in search of icons of luxury and celebrity (Ca-pri) and the picturesque (the Sorrento Pen-insula, the islands of Ischia and Procida and the Amalfi Coast).
If, indeed, it is true that “ a day at the beach is the same the world over” (Martin Parr), the local variants of the gestures and rituals imposed by globalization, the way in which people present themselves or impose them-

selves on others, or the manner in which couples have time together in absolute promiscuity and a total lack of privacy, re-veal the innumerable nuances of a com-pletely Neapolitan manner of living to the artist: all together in continuous communi-cation via looks, noises and words adapted to the limited conditions of space imposed by the impervious cliffs.
The lack of space, the horizons and the attitudes are very distant from those docu-mented by Parr in similar projects devoted to the endless beaches of South America at Mar del Plata (2007), Copacabana (2009) and to Benidorm in Spain (1999) or to the English locations of his The Last Resort pro-ject (1986).
