Michael Luther King Jr. is the birth name of Martin Luther King Jr. He was born on January 15, 1929.

Coretta Scott married Martin on June 18, 1953.

Yolanda Denise is the Kings’ first child. She was born on November 17, 1955.

Martin Luther III is the Kings’ second child. He was born on October 23, 1957.

Dexter Scott is the Kings’ third child. He was born on January 30, 1961.

Bernice Albertine is the Kings’ fourth child. She was born on March 28, 1963.

• Every third Monday of January is Martin Luther King Day. The date for the third Monday of the 2008 year is January 21, 2008. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed in 1986. In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George H. W. Bush signed an extension making the week long celebration into a month-long celebration. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
