    Basic Setup

    Your new Martin bow takes little setup to get started shooting. Please read and

    familiarize yourself with these starting procedures before shooting. Many of these

    procedures may have been completed by your authorized Martin dealer. After

    completingthesesimplesteps,youwillbemoreaccurateandwillhavegreatersuccess

    fromthestart.Acarefulandthoroughinitialsetupwillmakethetuningprocessmucheasier.

    CableGuard T h e c a b l e g u a r d r o d s h o u l d b e r o t a t e d t o

    provide adequate fletching clearance. Caution should

    clearancecan cause unnecessarypressureson the limb tips

    andaxlebearings.

    Followthesesteps:

    1.Visuallyalignshootingstringdownthecenterofthegrip.2.Adjustarrowrestleftorrightsoarrowiscenteredwiththe

    shootingstring.

    3.Adjustcableguardsothatcablesareoff-setnomorethan

    neededforetchingclearance.

    Onceoptimumangleisachieved,fullytightenthescrew,but

    donotovertighten.

    SettingArrowRestPosition After your arrowrestis installed, you

    willneedtosetitatagoodstartingpoint

    tobegintuning.Theeasiestwaytodo

    this is to visually align the bowstring

    inthecenterofthegripsection.Ifyou

    are shooting your bow with a release

    aid, your restwillneedtobecenteredwith the bow string.During tuning, your

    arrowrestmayneedtobemovedinorout

    fromitscenteredlocation.Thisisnormal

    becausedifferentshootersapplydifferent

    pressurestothebow.Fingershooterswill

    needtopositiontherestsothatthepoint

    isabout1/8outsidethestring.Thisisto

    compensateforthehorizontalbendingof

    thearrowuponrelease.Anarrowrestthat

    providessomesidesupport,suchasa

    cushionbuttonforthearrow,isbestfor

    ngershooters.

    QuickArrowRestandNockPlacement Youcanquicklyandeasilysetthepositionofyourrestand

    nockpointusingtherestmounting,orrestmountholesinyour

    bow.Yourrestshouldsitlevelwiththetworestmountholes,

    orslidelockmountofyourbow.(Seegraphic)Whentherestplacementiscorrect,youcanbeginplacingthenockset.Place

    anocklooselyonthestringandnockanarrow.Visuallyalignthe

    arrowlevelwithorslightlytailhighoftherestmountholes.Whenthe

    correctheightisset,crimpthenocksetintoplace.Thiswill

    give you a good starting point to begin tuning your bow.

    SettingTheTiller Takingatillermeasurementallowsyoutochecktherelativetension

    settingoftheupperandlowerlimbs.Aftersettingthedrawweighton

    yourbow,youwillneedtocheckthetillermeasurementtomakesure

    thatyouhaveadjustedyourlimbsevenly.OnallMartincompoundbows,

    0oreventillerwillshootperfectly.However,thetillermeasurement

    canvaryupto1/4closeratthebottom.Thereisnosetmeasurement

    thatprovidespeakperformanceforeveryshooter.Tomeasureyour

    tiller,simplymeasurefromthelimbpocketstothestringonbothends

    ofthebow.Someshootersndthatdifferenttillermeasurementsfrom

    "0"workbetterforthem.Itwillnothurtyourbowinanywayifyou

    experimentwithtiller.

    Note:YourPeepSightpositionandyournockpointpositioncan

    changewhenyouturnonelimbbolt.Takedetailedmeasurements

    andbesurethatyournockandpeeparecorrecteachtimeyou

    turnyourlimbbolts.

    Drawlengthcaneasilybemeasured

    fromtheapexofthestringatfulldraw

    tothepivotpointofthegrip.Fromthat

    measurementadd1andyouwillhave

    theA.M.O.standarddrawlength.

    All Martin Bows are adjustable with

    theuseofmodules.Refertothesection

    thatcoversyourspeciccamstylefor

    instructionsonadjustingdrawlength.

    SettingNockPointWithBowSquare Placeabowsquareonthestringandslidethesquaredown

    untilitrestsonyourarrowrest.Thenplaceamoveablenockset

    onthestring.Usingthemeasuringscaleonthebowsquare,set

    thenocksetattheproperlocationonthestring.Agoodstartingpointforngershootingishigh,measuringfromthebottomof

    thenocksetto90onthebowstring.Startat1/8highifyouare

    usingareleaseaid.Ifyoudonothaveabowsquare,youcansnap

    anarrowonthestringandvisuallylevelthearrow.Thencrimpyour

    nockset.Inapinch,thiswillgetyoutoagoodstartinglocation.

    ArrowSpeedandStringAccessories

    CertainbowstringaccessoriesincludingD-loops,stringsilencers,and peepsights,canreducearrowspeedbyasmuch10-15fps.

    ChangingDrawWeight Martin bows have a fteen pound draw weight range. Using the 3/16 allen wrench

    suppliedwitheachbow,youwillturnthelimbboltsclockwisetoaddweightandturncounter

    clockwisetoreduceweight.Onecompleteturnoneachlimbboltprovidesabout3pounds

    ofadjustment.

    TIP:Markalineoneachlimbboltinwhite-outorwhitepaintmarkertomakeiteasiertokeeptrackofhowfaryouareturningeachbolt.

    Note:Donotshootyourbowwiththelimbboltsmorethan5turnsoutfromthe

    riser.

    ReplacingTheStrings Shouldyourstringneedreplacing,itisbesttogotoyourMartindealerandhaveitdone

    byexperts.Itisrecommendedthatyoureplaceyourstringonceayearoranytimeitshows

    wear.Alwaysbesurethatthestringyoureplaceitwithisofthecorrectlengthandmaterial

    foryourbow.WerecommendusingMartinDoubleHelixStrings.

    CareAndStorageWhenproperlycaredfor,yournewMartinbowwillgiveyouyearsoftrouble-freeservice.

    Whenyourbowisnewitwillrequirenolubrication.Overtimeyoumayneedtolubricate

    yourcamstoguardagainstfrictionandnoise.UseadrylubricationsuchasTeonspray

    powderorgraphitepowder.YoucanalsousewetlubesuchasMolyLubeorTri-Flow.Do

    notuseWD-40lubrication.

    Agoodruleofthumbwhencaringforyourbowistokeepitascomfortableasyouare.If

    itistoohotforyou,itistoohotforyourbow.Ifitgetswet,dryitoffcompletely.Periodically

    cleanyourbowwithawetragandmildsoaptoremovemudordust(caution:donotstore

    untilcompletelydry).Prolongedexposuretoextremeheatmaycausefailureinyourbow

    limbsandexcessivestretchinyourharnesssystem.Itwillnothurtyourbowifitisrainedon

    whileshooting,butmakesureitiscompletelydrybeforestoringininabowcasetoguard

    againstrustorcorrosion.

    1/2"longerandthe#3pegis1/2"shorter.

    SettingTheNitrousCamTiming Wheeltimingonatwocambowmakessurethatthenocktravelthroughtheshotisstraightandlevel.

    Itisimportantthatyourbowistimedwellforgreatest

    accuracy.Settingthetimingisveryeasy,andyouwill

    beabletogothroughthisstepbystepandsetyour

    timinglikeapro.First,youwillneedtodrawyour

    bow back to full draw with your release and an

    arrow.Asyoubegintoreachfulldraw,slowdown

    andwatchthecablestopsrollovertothecableas

    seen to the left. You can have a friend check or

    youcanseeityourself.Itisalsohelpfultoperform

    thistestwiththebowbackedoffafewturns.This

    willmakeiteasiertoholdwhileyouarechecking

    thecablestops.Ifyourcamslookliketheonestothefarleft,theyareperfectlytimed.Ifonetouches

    beforetheother,asseenontheright,youwillneed

    to twist or TIGHTEN the cable that is connected

    to the cam that stops rst.Relax the bow in a

    bowpress before attempting to make any

    adjustments. You can adjust the cam's rotation

    usingtwo methods;follow that cam'scableto its

    splityokeandmakeadjustmentstherebyremovingandtwistingtheyoke,ordisconnectthe

    cablefromitspegonthecamandtwist.Thiswillchangethecamsrotationalittletogetitinsyncwiththeother.Onlytwistoneortwotwistsatatime.Alittletwistinggoesalongway.

    Onceyougetitreallyclose,youcanputahalftwistinthecabletogetitperfectifneeded.

    Trynottoovercomplicatethisprocedure;itisassimpleasitsounds.

    UsingNitrousMini-Modules In some cases your draw length will be at the shortest end of the cam's draw

    length adjustment range. Using a Mini Module will give you two more inches down

    on any of the Nitrous Cam bodies, and it will give you better performance in the short

    draw lengths. See your local dealer for a set of Mini Modules if you are in the lasttwo draw length settings. The Mini Module will give you more draw length exibility.

    ConvertingToTheX-ShootThroughSystem The Nitrous-X system eliminates the cable guard and the pressures it creates.

    ConvertingyourNitrousSystemtotheXShoot-ThroughSystemisveryeasy.Allyouneed

    todoisorderaconversionkitfromyourdealeranditwillcomewithX-Modules,cables,long

    modscrews,andlongaxles.Yourdealercaneasilyaddthesecondmoduletothetopand

    bottomandthenslideinthelongaxleswiththeuseofabowpress.Installthefourcables

    andpresto!YouhaveaNitrous-Xsystem.

    Ahighnocksetwillcauseporpoising.

    Aftercompletingthebasicsetupprocedures,youarereadytonetuneyoursetupforthe

    bestaccuracypossible.Therearefourtuningmethodsdescribedinthissection.Someof

    thesemethodsmaynotapplytocertainstylesofshooting.Readtheintroductiontoeach

    methodcarefullytomakesureitappliestoyourshootingstyle.

    BareShaftPlaningTest TheBareShaftPlaningmethodoftuningworksbestwhenusingangerrelease.Tobegin

    theBareShaftPlaningtestyouwillneedthreeetchedarrowsandoneortwobareshafts.

    Youwillalsoneedatargetthatwillcatchthearrowswithoutallowingthearrowtokickasit

    stopsinthetarget.Thistestwillhelpyouestablishthecorrectnockandrestposition,and

    itwilltellyouifyourarrowisthecorrectspine.PorpoisingandFishTailingdescribethe

    differentightdisturbancesyoumayencounterwhiletuning.

    Porpoising Porpoisingisidentiedbyanupanddownkickduringarrowightandrelatestothe

    nockpointadjustment.Itisimportanttocorrectporpoisingrstbecausesmallleftandright

    disturbancescouldbenockpointrelated.Startatabouttentofteenyardsandshootthree

    etchedarrowsintoyourtarget.Usingthesameaimingpoint,followthemupwithabare

    shaft.Afteryougetthebareshaftstoimpactwiththeetchedshafts,youmaywanttotry

    shootingthematalongerdistanceforanerindicationofarrowight.

    Ifthebareshaftsimpactbelowtheetchedarrows,yournockpointistoohigh.Move

    yournockingpointdowninsmallincrementsuntilthebareshaftstrikeswiththeetched

    shafts.Ifthebareshaftsimpactaboveyouretchedarrows,yournockpointistoolow.Raise

    yournockpointinsmallincrementsuntilyouretchedarrowsandyourbareshaftimpact

    together.

    To further fine tune your setup, step back to twenty or thirty yards and repeat

    PaperTuning Papertuningwillworkforallstyles ofshooting.As you are goingthroughthesesteps

    keep in mind that paper tuning is not chiseled in stone as the law of archery. It is a

    guidelineforcleanarrowight.Manyshootersndthattheirsetupshootsmostaccurately

    whenachievinglessthanperfecttuningresults.Forexample,sometargetshooterssettheir

    bowstotearslightlyhighthroughthepaper.Theyfeelthismakestheirarrowightlesslikely

    tobeinuencedbyoutsidevariableslikewindorrainandhelpsarrowclearancewhenusing

    ashoot-aroundtyperestsuchasabladeorpantypelauncher.

    To begin paper tuning, set up a frame or rack with paper suspended from the

    frame. Position the frame far enough away from your backstop so the arrow can

    completely clear the paper. Stand about ten feet from the paper and make sure

    yourarrowislevelasitiesthroughthepaper.Fireatestshotandreadtheresults.
