Beginning Boxing is a DVD designed to enhance the boxing skills of people wanting to enter boxing, but also for the increasing number of martial artists wanting to improve their hand skills. We see a growing recognition of the importance of boxing as a foundation for all martial arts and combat sports. More and more martial artists are looking to boxing to add another dimension to their own practice. This involves boxing providing greater adaptability in movement, greater variety and power in punching and greater emphasis in being able to be hit and continue fighting.

Our belief is that boxing will provide all martial artists and athletes with an unbeatable foundation on which to build their kicking, grappling, etc. Part of the reason for this is that boxers also have an unbeatable awareness of their space, which can be applied to any combat sport.

For many years the traditional martial arts were seen as a poor relation to boxing. This attitude is certainly changing but there is still an element of truth that the martial arts are a poor relation – without being disrespectful. Let us explain. If you take the average martial artist and put them into a ring with an average boxer – the outcome would be interesting! Boxers train in a way which makes them more complete as fighters – most of the time.

About six years ago I (Rocky) was introduced to Tommy by someone I was practising martial arts with. We used to train ‘boxing’ on our own, sparring and doing drills. Then we were introduced to Tommy. Needless to say my whole training method changed. At the time I was also training with Steve Morris – who introduced me to his revolutionary training methods, which incorporated a degree of boxing. Tommy made me think about my foundation and how I might develop it. As we trained regularly, it became clear that we might be able to

produce something which captures

Tommy’s extensive boxing experience

and my under-standing of learning

within martial arts and sport. The writing of the book took the best part of three and a half years, which was about two years longer than we had planned, and the DVD took about six months of planning after this. The gym in Sneinton became our research laboratory where we went through different learning experiences. That learning continues today as we experiment with different concepts and methods.

Martial artists have a lot to gain from adopting boxing concepts and training methods to their own training method. We hope our book TVP™ and our boxing DVDs with Summersdale help with this objective.

In this unique DVD – which was filmed live – Iain explains the fundamentals of his kata-based sparring concept.

The information and numerous drills shown on this DVD will show you how to unify your

kata and sparring and develop your ability to apply the techniques and concepts of the kata when it really counts.

Many people have dreams they would like to realise and things about their lives that they would like to change. Relatively few have the mental strength to break outside their comfort zone and take the steps needed. Fear, self-doubt, lack of confidence, or simply being overawed by the tasks ahead can stop you from achieving your true potential. This guide shows how to develop your mind and push past the obstacles that stand between you and your goals.

Iain Abernethy has been involved in the martial arts since childhood. Iain holds the rank of 5th Dan with both the British Combat Association (one of the world’s leading groups for close-quarter combat, self-protection and practical martial arts) and Karate England (the official governing body for karate in England). Iain regularly writes for the UK’s leading martial arts magazines and he is a member of the Combat Hall of Fame. One of the UK’s leadingexponents of applied karate, Iain has written a number of

Iain’s seminars, books,DVDs and articles have proved to be very popularwith those groups andindividuals who wishto practise their arts as the pragmatic systems they were originally intended to be.

i want to tell you all about my new DVD! We’ve been working on this project for two years and I’m delighted that it is now available. It’s probably an overused word these days, but I really do think this DVD is revolutionary. Up until now, martial arts DVDs have been instructional in nature, or contained a single workout for the viewer to do along with the DVD. However, the technology of DVDs means it is possible to make a DVD which is a totally interactive training tool.

The DVD is designed to help you develop a wide variety of martial attributes and get you motivated to train on those days where you don’t have a training partner or can’t get to the dojo or gym. The DVD will provide a complete martial workout every time it is viewed and is split into ten sections. You can select to do any or all of these sections in any given workout. Each section contains a variety of drills, and each of these drills has further options within it. Instruction is provided for all the drills on the DVD. The DVD also contains all the required timers and counters and will automatically take you to the right one for each drill! To use the DVD you need no equipment except a little room and the DVD itself.

The upshot of all this is that the DVD will provide a huge variety of workouts. Indeed, you need never do the same workout twice! The drills are also constructed so that they will be relevant to all styles and all abilities. The DVD includes: Warm-up, Repetition Drills, Shadow Fighting Drills, Will Drills, Skills Training, Lower Body Conditioning, Upper Body Conditioning, Exercises for the Abdominals, Back and

Neck, Flexibility Training (basic and

advanced) and Mental Training.

Not bad for a single DVD!

As I said earlier, the DVD is constructed such that I will ask you to make selections from the on-screen menus as I guide you through each workout. It is therefore totally up to you what each workout consists of, how hard it is, and how long it is! To my knowledge nothing like this has ever been done before in the martial arts or fitness worlds. If the technology is there though, we should be making use of it! I feel this DVD will add a whole new dimension to your solo training and I’m sure you’ll enjoy using it.

Best Wishes,

Iain

the reneweD interest in the use of pressure points in the martial arts has created controversy among various martial artists. In this brief article I would like to address three of the major criticisms. They are:

Pressure points require a great deal of study and practice to use.

Pressure points are small and difficult to hit when they are moving.

Pressure points do not work on everyone.

I would agree with the first point that the use of pressure points does require skill. But I would argue that the use of martial arts in and of itself requires study and practice to apply in a self-defence situation. Individuals must have the skills sets developed to apply the defensive techniques of their art in a moment of stress, irrespective of the application of pressure points. If they are incapable of responding with an effective technique it is irrelevant if they have studied the use of pressure points or not. For the skilled martial artist the use of pressure points offers them a force multiplier.

The second criticism, thatpressure points are small and hard to find, is most often levelled by someone who has had limited exposure.

Yes, the individual points are small and if your opponent is moving you do not have a static target. However, many times

you will find pressure points grouped in an area where it

rick clark

Order code: sp2137price: £19.99

pressure pOints in tHe martial arts

is possible to strike more than one pressure point at a time. In situations where movement is fluid you can find portions of your opponent’s body that are relatively static. For example, one of the most common assaults is when your opponent grabs with one hand and strikes with the other. The arm that is delivering the strike would present a more difficult target to strike. However, the arm that has been used to grab your person does present a relatively static target. If you have developed the skill sets to strike points on the arm you have the potential to attack an unguarded area that can cause pain, numbness, and in some cases even knock out an opponent.

With the third I must agree that pressure points do not work on everyone. If I were forced to offer an estimate, it would have to be 5 per cent or less who appear to be somewhat unaffected by pressure points. But that also means that at a minimum 95 per cent of the individuals in the world do feel the effects of pressure points. Equally there are a number of people I have found that do not exhibit pain to joint locks; that does not mean that joint locks are useless and should not be taught. What that does teach us as martial artists is that all techniques are not always effective and we must be prepared to alter our strategy. It is only in the last hundred years or so that the use of pressure points has been de-emphasised. While having doubts about the effectiveness of any technique can be normal, I would simply ask that sceptics retain an open mind and make a judgment based on practical experience.

Geoff Thompson made violence his profession working as a doorman at some of Britain’s roughest clubs. As the holder of the rank of 6th Dan black belt in Japanese karate, 1st Dan in Judo and equally well-qualified in other martial arts he is a TOUGH man. Like many others in the field of self-protection, Geoff began his martial arts training in the Eastern arts (e.g. karate, aikido), but during his time as a nightclub doorman found that what he had learned was inadequate for the reality of violence. Though he utilises a small core of techniques from Eastern arts as part of his teachings, Geoff prefers more pragmatic Western arts such as boxing and wrestling. In 1997 Geoff was flown out to the United States by Chuck Norris to teach at his international seminar.

As an ambassador for the martial arts, Geoff has appeared on national and international TV and radio – for a couple of years as the BBC Good Morning self-defence expert – talking about and, giving advice on self-protection and related subjects. His work is both innovative and thought-provoking. He has published several articles for mainstream glossy magazines such as Loaded, Maxim, FHM, Arena, Esquire and has publishedseveral articles with GQmagazine (UK/France). He has also appeared many times on mainstream TV including ITV’s Martial Arts: The Real Story televised in two one-hourprogrammes. In 2004 Geoff won a BAFTA for his short film Brown Paper Bag.

self-defencegeOff tHOmpsOn On

as important as the law may be, contemplating the legal implications of defending your-self in the face of an ensuing attack would be unwise. It can cause indecision, which usually leads to defeat.

I call the law the second enemy: this is not meant disparagingly, but, having been on the wrong side of it a few times I feel duty bound to highlight the inherent dangers of dealing with – what can be – a sticky judicial system, post-assault.

Many people are convicted for what they say and not what they do. This means you could legally defend yourself and yet still be convicted and sent to jail (do not pass go...) if you don’t claim self-defence (correctly) when giving a statement to the police. Many of my friends ended up in prison because they didn’t understand the law. Paradoxically many known criminals have avoided prison because they (or certainly their solicitors) did. So, if self-defence is your aim, then an appreciation of this judicial grey area has to be an imperative.

Post-assault, you’ll probably be suffering from what is known as adrenal-induced tachypsychia. This can cause time distortion,

time loss, memory distortion and memory loss. You may also feel the innate urge to talk, if only to justify your actions (Logorrhoea). All of the latter affect your ability to make an objective statement if the police become involved. When/if you do make a statement it is hardly likely to be accurate considering these facts. Six months down the line when you end up in court to defend your right to self-defence, everything will

hang on your statement. So make sure you’re

clear about your rights. If you’re not clear,

insist on waiting until the next day before

making a statement or ask to see a duty solicitor (or your own). It’s your right. Don’t put pen to paper otherwise. A police cell can be a very lonely place when you’re not used to it, and the police can often be guilty of rushing, even pressuring you for a quick statement. This pressure can be subtle but effective; being left alone for long periods of time, being told that you might be sent to prison, even the old good-cop/bad-cop routine (yes, honestly). Many a tough guy has turned from hard to lard after a few hours surrounded by those four grey walls. Under these circumstances

it’s very easy to say things you really don’t want to say, just so that you can go home.

If you have to defend yourself and you damage your assailant my advice is not to hang around after the dirty deed has been done. This minimises the risk of legal (or other) repercussions. Attack victims (especially those who successfully defended them-selves) often feel compelled to stay at the scene of crime post assault. Do yourself a favour; make like Houdini and vanish. Your life and your liberty might be at stake. Better still, don’t be there in the first place, that way you won’t have to worry about long months waiting for the

court case and the possibility of suffering

from a severe loss of liberty.

Self-defence has been sold and sold to death. There are a million how-to books on the subject and experts are coming out of the martial woodwork. They all mean well but good advice is rare and bad advice can get you killed. I can save you a lot of reading and a lot of pain by giving you my tried-and-tested, learned-in-the-field system for physical self-defence. It’s only five words long (and one of them is an expletive) – Learn to hit f****** hard.

rick yOungRick Young has been studying martial arts since 1975. Beginning his training under Shaun Shanley, Rick then began to study Wado Ryu karate along with Western boxing and grappling. In 1979, when he was 17, Rick first met and became a student of the legendary Dan Inosanto.

In 1984 Rick travelled to Los Angeles California to train with Dan Inosanto and other prominent martial artists.

In 1995 Rick was awarded his full instructorship by Inosanto in Jeet Kune Do and the Filipino martial arts. This made him the first person outside of the USA to be given this honour.

Rick has been featured in numerous martial arts publications including Martial Arts Illustrated, Combat, Grappling, Fighters and Fighting Arts International. He trains and teaches in Edinburgh, Scotland.
