The investigation began by questioning family, friends and church staff, attempting to gather vital clues to the mystery. After repeatedly peering under furniture, flipping cushions and crawling on the floorboard of my truck, I came to the humbling

admission, my wallet was not “misplaced”, it was lost!

I attempted to comfort myself, “It had my Drivers License. Oh, well what’s a picture ID?” - Reminds me of the story about the State Trooper who pulled over a pickup truck on I-75 and asked the driver, “Got any I.D.?” The southern driver replied, “’bout what?” (I digress.)

In recent weeks, I’ve been reminded how frequently the requests for identification can be made in the absence of my wallet. When making a debit or credit card purchase, I was forced to have Delia accompany me, because the only debit or credit cards available were in her name – my cards were in the lost wallet. I felt like a foreigner without a passport, an alien to the consumer culture. I wanted to yell, “I am really me!”

The Apostle Paul speaks to our identification as followers of Jesus Christ. “…by putting His seal on us and giving us his Spirit in our hearts… 2 Corinthians 1:22 (NRSV)

The Bible encourages us that God places a seal, stamp, mark upon Christ followers. We belong to God and are identified with Jesus Christ. Our association as a member of God’s family is confirmed through faith and by way of an inner assurance from God’s Spirit. John Wesley described it as “God’s Spirit witnessing to our spirit.” When Martin Luther, father of the Protestant Reformation, contended with depression, he would recall an important moment of identification in the very life, death and Resurrection of Jesus. He would loudly cry out, “I am baptized in Christ!” Inwardly, he was strengthened by acknowledging the One who held his life.

It is my prayer that when people identify the body of believers, called Martha Bowman Church, our most revealing characteristic as Christ followers will be our true love and care toward others. Through our hospitality and acts of kindness, may the evidence be obvious that we really are God’s faithful people in our hearts and with our hands!

OWMAN MEMORIAL UMC

After nearly a year of studying, planning and fundraising, we are set to begin our renovation project on Monday, October 13th! There will be a good bit of shuffling around for the next several months, so here are some general things to keep in mind as we head into construction:1. Construction is messy and can be chaotic, so be conscious of temporary directional signs around the church. Some areas

will be sealed off for certain periods of time, and at different points the flow of traffic will change.2. Some worship services (see below), ministries, meetings, and classes will need to meet in different locations on a temporary

basis. Additionally, some groups will be relocated on a permanent basis. We know this may not be ideal, but we thank you in advance for your flexibility!

3. Our Kids Ministry will meet in the lower level of the Administration/Education Building (in the former “Underground”) for the duration of construction (approximately seven to eight months).

4. We do not anticipate the Preschool/Nursery Ministry needing to relocate at any point, but there will be some adjustments made along the way related to available classrooms and flow of traffic.

5. Construction will be broken down into two phases, and here is what to expect during those phases:• “Phase One” will begin October 13th, and run for approximately four months. During this phase the work will be concentrated on updating the Historic Sanctuary, remodeling the current Kids Area to make way for the Youth Ministry, installing a new elevator in the Administration/Education Building, and a few other minor projects. During this period of time all worship will take place in the Christian Life Center. As our pastors announced on September 28th, we will have an 8:30 a.m. Traditional Service and an 11:00 a.m. Contemporary Service. This will be a great opportunity for all of our traditional worshipers to worship together, and it will allow us to continue to offer two distinctive styles of worship each Sunday, an important value of our congregation. Again, thank you for your flexibility, especially the 11:00 a.m. Traditional worshipers, as they adjust to a new time (or style) during this period of time while the Historic Sanctuary is refreshed. During the Advent Season, the 11:00 a.m. hour may shift to more of a blended feel, as the season lends itself well to incorporating some sacred traditions into all styles of worship. Also during this period of time the Kids will begin their time in the “Underground”, the office entrance will be shifted, and Preschool/Nursery parents will need to enter in from the CLC side.• “Phase Two” will begin once Phase One has been completed, and will run for approximately three months. During this phase the work will be concentrated on reconfiguring the downstairs portion of the Christian Life Center Building for Kids Ministry, updating the downstairs gathering/greeting area, finishing adjustments in the Preschool/Nursery area, and some minor work in the Christian Life Center worship space. Stay tuned for information related to this phase as we get closer to the turn of the year. This is an exciting time in the life our church, and we are grateful for all of the hard work and generosity that has made this project a reality.

CONSTRUCTION IS SET TO BEGIN!

*The Church Library will be packed up in preparation for construction. Our library volunteers request that all outstanding library books be returned to the library as soon as possible. Thank you!

Page 4: MARTHA BOWMAN UMC - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/marthabowmanmemorialumc... · David Kinnaman wrote a book entitled, You Lost Me: Why Young Christians Are Leaving Church…and

“I’m sorry, but you lost me.” All of us have probably uttered those words in the midst of a conversation. Sometimes they indicate that something needs to be repeated, but sometimes they reflect something bigger: “I have given up on this idea, and I am moving on to something else.” Sadly, it is the latter sentiment that reflects the attitude of many people my age and their feelings towards church. In fact Christian researcher David Kinnaman wrote a book entitled, You Lost Me: Why Young Christians Are Leaving Church…and Rethinking Faith, that focused on this very idea.

As we have gone through the Revisioning process the past several months, the question of how can we reach more “young people” has been asked numerous times by both older and younger members of our congregation. When we talk about “young people”, most people generally mean “The Millennials”, the largest generation in world history with birth dates between 1980-2000 (give or take a few years depending on your source). In the past five years I have read countless books on this topic, such as Kinnaman’s, and I believe most of all that reaching Millennials is more about having the right culture than offering the right programming. Here are a few “cultural features” that I find to be important to Millennials, drawing on both research and conversations with others in my age bracket:• Community – Millennials tend to have good, respectful relationships with older generations, but we also crave quality time with people our own age. Being a part of worship or a Bible study with fellow Millennials is nice, but finding time to share life together both within and outside of the church is important.• Outward Focus – Churches that come across as inwardly focused will have a hard time reaching younger people, but churches that are committed to reaching people outside the walls of the church and serving the needs of the community are right on target. In fact many un-churched or de-churched young adults gravitate towards community organizations that are committed to serving the community, and have said that a lack of an outward focus is one of the things that has turned them off to being a part of a church.• Authenticity and Depth – Millennials do not care much for simply going through the motions in worship and discipleship. They desire to be a part of churches where people are real about the issues of life, and do not try to put up a facade. Also, they want to be a part of a community where the tough questions can be asked, and not brushed over. Many young

adults that have left the church have pointed to the fact that in the churches they grew up in there was a lack of depth, and they did not feel permitted to ask challenging questions related to faith.• Quality Age-level Programming – When I was growing up, children and youth tended to go wherever their parents went to church. When I reached youth age, children and youth seemed to be going more and more to where their friends were going…and then the parents followed! As more and more Millennials become parents, the choice of church is increasingly being driven by the quality of the preschool, elementary, and youth programming. We are fortunate at Martha Bowman to have three great staff leaders over these three areas, and we are excited to see how the renovations will enhance the ministries that they are able to offer.• Unity – It may surprise you that worship style has not been mentioned up until this point. While it is true that most young people in our church and others prefer contemporary worship, this is not the primary concern: Millennials desire worship that is done well and where there is a lack of division. While most of the young folks that I know prefer contemporary worship, I also know some that prefer liturgy-rich traditional worship.

The things that I hear them say most, however, (and research confirms this) is that they want to be where the services are led well, the preaching is strong and applicable to their lives, and that the church is committed to and unified in their approach to worship, whether that is a single style or multiple. Style might be what gets someone in the door, but a sense of unity is what keeps them coming back, as divisions over worship style are a distraction. I am proud of our church and the way

that we support our distinct styles – I believe that this unity and support of one another is essential for our growth in both.

These are just a few of many thoughts that I can share on this subject, and what I have shared is brief and without a lot of development due to space. If you have any questions about any of the above, I would love to discuss it with you.

I am hopeful for the future of our church. I see a church that is beginning to draw in more and more young members, and I am hopeful that we can continue to develop a church culture that more folks my age will desire to experience.

NEW “MBU” TERM |OCTOBER 8THBeginning Wednesday, October 8th, we will offer two six-week courses at 6:30 p.m. (following fellowship supper).

BSP 1101 | The Psalms | Rm 214 | Facilitator: Tim Steffen The Psalms are basically prayers—the prayers of the people of Israel. Though most of them were used in worship, they reflect the deepest emotions and cries of individuals as well. Some of them can be encouraging, strengthening, supporting, comforting, and healing. The course will study eleven passages that seem specially poignant, express meaning for our times and bring application to our daily lives. TBL 1102 | The Blessing (Men’s Study) | Rm 212 | Facilitators: Randy Griffin and Mike Hale Everyone longs for the gift of a “blessing” - the unconditional love and approval that comes from a healthy relationship with another person. This life changing gift contains 5 essential elements that we will discuss during this class. This study will offer advice and a fresh perspective on making this gift a part of our families. The book, The Blessing, powerfully communicates these biblically based elements to prepare us for positive future relationships, and our relationship with God. If you think you have missed out on a blessing, or you are not actively blessing others, this is a course for you!
