MarsMarsis the fourthplanetfrom theSunand the second smallest planet in theSolar System, afterMercury. Named after the Roman god of war, it is often referred to as the "Red Planet"because theiron oxideprevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance.Mars is aterrestrial planetwith a thinatmosphere, having surface features reminiscent both of theimpact cratersof theMoonand the valleys, deserts, andpolar ice capsofEarth.Therotational periodand seasonal cycles of Mars are likewise similar to those of Earth, as is the tilt that produces the seasons. Mars is the site ofOlympus Mons, the largestvolcanoand second-highest Known Mountain in the Solar System, and ofValles Marineris, one of the largest canyons in the Solar System. The smoothBorealis basinin the northern hemisphere covers 40% of the planet and may be a giant impact feature.Mars has twomoons,PhobosandDeimos, which are small and irregularly shaped. These may be capturedasteroids, similar to5261 Eureka, aMars trojan.Mars is host to seven functioningspacecraft: five in orbit 2001 Mars Odyssey,Mars Express,Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter,MAVENandMars Orbiter Mission and two on the surface Mars Exploration RoverOpportunityand theMars Science LaboratoryCuriosity. Observations by theMars Reconnaissance Orbiterhave revealed possible flowing water during the warmest months on Mars.In 2013, NASA'sCuriosityrover discovered that Mars's soil contains between 1.5% and 3% water by mass (albeit attached to other compounds and thus not freely accessible).
