FOSTERING

I am interested in fostering. What does it

entail?

Thanks for your interest! We do not have a shelter

location. All rescues are housed in private volunteer

foster homes, where they receive personal one-on-

one care in a home environment. Because of this,

we are only able to save as many animals for which

we have foster homes. We are very supportive of our fosters and are here to help

you each step of the way. In general, all it requires is that you fill one more bowl in

the morning, hold one more leash on your walks, and kiss one more nose before you

go to bed. You care for these animals in the same you already care for your own.

The first step toward becoming a foster is completing our foster application on line

at http://www.marrvelouspetrescues.org/application.html. It is the same

application to adopt. We will work hard to approve you within 3 business days, so

that we can set a time to meet with you and match you with a foster dog or cat

that will fit well with your given abilities and environment. Welcome aboard and

cheers to saving lives!

Romeo o Romeo! How adorable is this sweet 4 year old?! Romeo is about 28 pounds, playful and loves people of all ages. He gets a little growly on a leash with unfamiliar dogs but is really nice off leash! His previous owners had issues with housetraining but he loves the doggy door at his fosters home and has had no accidents. We want Romeo to have a way better life than his namesake, so if you can give Romeo a happily furafter than apply today at Marrvelouspetrescues.org

www.marrvelouspetrescues.org for Bo today!!

Blossom

Blossom is almost too adorable for words!!! This super smart girl is just 9-10 weeks old but is one of the smartest pups we've seen! She tipped the

scales at just 3.65 lbs last week but we don't know how big she'll get. These pups were malnourished and really wormy when we took them in. They could very well have a little growth spurt now that they are being so well cared for...thanks Jessica!!! You can apply to adopt Blossom online at marrvelouspetrescues.org

High Technology: Identifying Lost Pets With Microchips

Despite your best efforts, your dog or cat has slipped out an open door and disappeared. If he's wearing a collar and identification tag, chances are good that you’ll get him back.

But what if the collar comes off?

To protect their pets in this scenario, many owners turn to technology in the form of microchips implanted in their pets. But don't rely on a microchip alone to protect your pet. In the event of accidental separation, identification tags are your pet's first ticket home. Microchips provide an extra level of protection in case your pet loses his collar and tags. Providing your cat or dog with both tags and a microchip can help en‐sure a happy reunion if the unthinkable happens and your companion gets lost.

What are microchips?

Microchips are tiny transponders, about the size of a grain of rice, that use radio frequency waves to transmit information about your pet. They're implanted just under the skin,, usually right between the shoulder blades.

How they work

Each microchip contains a registration number and the phone number of the registry for the particular brand of chip. A handheld scanner reads the radio fre‐quency of the chip and displays this information. The animal shelter or vet clinic that finds your pet can contact the registry to get your name and phone number.

Can a microchip get lost inside my pet?

Your pet's subcutaneous tissue usually bonds to the chip within 24 hours, preventing it from moving, although there's a small chance that the chip could migrate. But it can't actually get lost inside your pet.

How long do microchips last?

Microchips are designed to work for 25 years.

Where can I get my pet microchipped?

Many veterinarians and some animal shelters implant microchips for a small fee. This is done with a large‐bore needle and doesn't require anesthesia. But—and this is very important—just getting a microchip isn't enough—you also need to register your pet with the microchip company.

How do I register my pet?

Complete the paperwork that comes with the chip and send it to the registry, or do it online if that option is avail‐able.  Some companies charge a one‐time registration fee while others charge an annual fee.  You’ll also receive a tag for your pet’s collar with the chip number and registry phone number.

Are there different types of chips?

Yes, and that used to be a problem. Competing microchip companies use different frequencies to send signals to scanners, and until recently there was no universal scanner that could read all the different frequencies. That was a problem if a pet had a microchip that a scanner couldn't detect.

Many microchip companies now produce universal scanners and provide them to animal shelters and animal control agencies at no or very low cost. If your local shelters don’t have scanners, they can contact some of the major manufacturers to ask about getting one.

Are there different registries?

Yes, and that, too, used to be problematic. Different chip companies maintained separate databases. Now, some chip companies will register pets with any brand of chip Also, the American Microchip Advisory Council is work‐ing to develop a network of the registry databases to streamline the return of pets to their families.

Can a microchip replace my pet's collar and tags?

Despite advances in universal scanners and registry procedures, microchips aren't foolproof, and you shouldn't rely on them exclusively to protect your pet. Universal scanners can detect a competing company's chip, but they may not be able to read the data. And if shelter or vet clinic personnel don’t use the scanner properly, they may fail to detect a chip.

What if I move?

You need to contact the company that registers the chip to update your information; otherwise, the chip will be useless. You may be charged a small fee to process the update.

What do I do if I adopt a pet who's already been microchipped?

If you know what brand of chip your pet has, contact the corresponding registry to update the information. If you don’t know what type of chip your pet has, find a vet or animal shelter that can read it.

Our Pets Need Preventative Healthcare Too!

There are many similarities between human medicine and companion animal medicine. Living similar lifestyles, our pets can develop many of the same ailments that people do. Some of the same diagnostic tools and procedures used to analyze our health are also common in veterinary medicine. Treatments and therapies for animals can also be similar to that of humans, often using products manufactured by the same companies who make products for human medicine.

To prevent diseases and ailments, we see our personal doctors and dentists at regular intervals for examinations, consultations and treatments. These regular trips to the doctor and dentist keep us healthy, allow us to maintain or increase our quality of life and help to control healthcare costs. However, illnesses that are not diagnosed or ignored and left untreated can reduce our lifespan and possibly diminish our quality of life. Illnesses discovered in advanced stages will be much more expensive to treat and the prognoses will likely be less promising. These principles of preventative healthcare also apply to managing the healthcare of our pets. As guardians, our pets rely on us to care for their health and well-being. As a veterinarian, I prefer to prevent problems today than treat those problems in the future. Most people are familiar with the concept that one year in a human life is equivalent to seven years in the life of a dog or cat. Although a generalization, this ratio accurately reflects the fact that the metabolic rate of our pets is much higher than humans. Since our pets mature faster, ailments and diseases also manifest themselves at a faster rate. For this reason, preventative healthcare is vital to the well-being of our pets.

Unfortunately, many pet owners believe that vaccinations are all that is necessary to maintain the health of their pets. Although vaccinations are very important, they alone will not keep our pets healthy. The best way to ensure that our pets stay happy, healthy and long lived is to provide preventative healthcare for them that includes, a comprehensive annual examination, a possible spay or neuter procedure, oral and periodontal care, heartworm, flea and tick prevention, diet management and vaccinations.

Preventative healthcare starts with a comprehensive annual examination. This annual examination should include an ocular exam, a palpation exam (lymph nodes, organs, and joints), an oral/periodontal examination, pain identification and management, illness diagnosis and prevention and discussing specific breed disposition to illness.

An oral and periodontal examination can find and prevent common problems like tooth decay, gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), periodontitis (inflammation and infection of the ligaments and bones that support the teeth) and other ailments cause by poor oral health.

Heartworm infestations left unchecked can lead to the death of the host. Consequently, heartworm prevention is very important and our pets must be treated year round. Many heartworm medications also treat other parasites like hookworms and roundworms. Preventing flea and tick infestations will eliminate the exposure to many diseases and will also keep our pets more comfortable.

Preventative healthcare should also include a discussion about diet. Like humans, our pet’s metabolic rates slow as they age. Like humans, over-consumption will lead to obesity which leads to numerous diseases. Food content needs to be regularly evaluated and matched to our pet’s needs. Food portions need to be controlled as our pets age. Providing counsel to pet owners regarding proper diets and portion control is a key part of preventative healthcare.

Lastly, our pets need vaccinations to prevent common diseases that can be debilitating or fatal. In the Keys, it is recommended that dogs receive Rabies, Distemper, Parvovirus, Leptospirosis (when living in Raccoon habitats) and Bordetella when exposed to multiple dogs. It is recommended that cats be vaccinated to ward against Rabies, Upper Respiratory Disease and the Panleukopenia Virus. Cats that spend time outdoors or live with cats that spend time outdoors should be vaccinated for the Feline Leukemia Virus (FELV).

The quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” also applies to our pets. Preventative healthcare for our pets can prevent future problems, increase the quality of life of our pets and save money in future medical costs. By following these principles of preventative healthcare, we can ensure that our pets are happy, healthy and live a long and enjoyable life!
