Father’s Day and Carer’s BBQ Thank you to all the parents that were able to attend our annual Father’s Day and Carer’s BBQ last Friday. Thanks also to our wonderful staff for making sure the morning was such a success. These are important community events, linking not only parents and children but parents and other parents. It was great to see so many conversations and games happening
over a freshly cooked bacon and egg sandwich.
Minor Works Update As parents who come up to the school would see, we have had a few contractors in lately doing minor works around the school. The new roof in E Block is almost complete, some tiling and painting in toilets, canteen and offices have already been completed. The next stage includes new gutters in all blocks, replacement of the green floor tiles and painting of a number of classrooms. Most of this work will be completed in the upcoming holidays, however there may be some inconveniences to classes in the week before and after holidays. We always keep student safety our first priority and classes will move for a day if it is deemed necessary. Parents are welcome to discuss any of these works with me at any stage if they are
concerned.
Amazing Me We hope to see many Years 3-6 students and families at tonight’s optional Amazing Me presentation in the Hall. Starting at 6pm this is an important presentation and covers many personal issues about growing up that class teachers do not discuss. Please note students must
be accompanied by a parent and the cost is $25 per family.
Enjoy your week.

Superhero Walk The Superhero Walk is just over two weeks away with 15 teams pledging their superhero lap around Heffron Park. We’ve raised $4,650 but we’re a long way from our target of $24,000 to help build a much needed new play-
ground for the K-2 students and need your help.
We’re encouraging all students, their families and carers to donate to our superhero dad who starting from 12pm, 21 September will be walking for 24 hours, dressed as 24 differ-ent superheroes. Or register your superhero team today and join Tas and his fellow superheroes for a lap around Heffron
Park. No donation is too small!
Rocketboy Pizza have kindly donated to a pizza party to the
class who raises the most – who will it be?
The P&C are urgently seeking 5 volunteers for the afternoon of 21st and morning of 22nd September to help with the event including sausage sizzle specialists. Con-tact [email protected] to register your help to-
day.
Get your costumes ready for a superhero mufti day on 17 September. We’ll be getting everyone together for a HUGE Maroubra Bay superhero photo and our dad Tas will speak to
the assembly.
Thanks to Murphy Sports who’ve sponsored the Marvel super-hero hour and Narellen Pools who sponsored the Miraculous superhero hour. Know a local sponsor who can help – let Tas
know.

mation.

Number Crunchers Grand
Final On Monday, the 2 September 2019, Arlen Q represented Maroubra Bay PS at the Grand Final Number Cruncher competition. This competition involved him putting his mental mathematics abilities to the test. Arlen was given a series of number problems and he had to answer them within a strict time limit. This was delivers to an audience at Connells Point Public School. It was a difficult competition and Arlen came third in the competition. We are proud of his efforts and his
mathematical mind. Well done Arlen!

Library
Book Launch
As promised, our School Library has now released a
whole stack of new and re-released books for all
ages and interests. We have additional copies of
many popular series’, latest issues, comic books and
all the award winning and short-listed books from
this year’s CBCA. There are some real treasures in
this batch, but you’d better be quick to borrow.
Book Launch – Aboriginal Authors and Illustrators
These books are now on display and ready for borrow-
ing. The selection features new books and some
re-released books from Aboriginal authors and illustra-
tors from all around Australia. With books for every
learning stage and a variety of themes, there is
something here for everyone. Don’t forget to also check
out the ‘Aboriginal Books’ section in our library.
Book Fair
Can you believe we sold $3000 worth of books at our book fair? Each morning and afternoon
of Book Week (Week 6), our team of teachers were often flat out trying to keep up with the
sales. Our school will now receive over $700 to put towards more books. Thankyou to all you
parents who purchased at our fair, and to the teachers who ran and organized the event.
The Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC) is now over. For the past 6 months, all students at Maroubra Bay PS have been gradually reading and adding selected books to their PRC list in an attempt to reach a reading goal. Books on the PRC list have been recognized by a commit-tee as being especially valuable to certain age groups, and we have a massive range of these
books in our school.
K-2 classes have had a selection of these books read to them by their class teachers and 3-6 students have been given the responsibility to select their own books and update their own ac-
counts online from the PRC website.

Waste
Waste Today Resource Tomorrow Presentation in Week 6
On Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th August, Maroubra Bay Public School were lucky enough to have Nicole from SUEZ Recycling & Recovery come to our school to share and discuss the importance of recycling in our school and local
community.
Each class got to spend an hour with Nicole to discuss and investigate:
What goes in each bin – the good, the bad and the ugly (and it’s mostly ugly);
What next? Where it all goes and what happens to it;
Waste and the World– the impacts on the environment if waste isn’t managed.
The students thoroughly enjoyed this presentation!

An Ode to the S.A.S.S. Oh, marvelous S.A.S.S,
you always help our class,
always there for everyone,
you can never be outdone.
You aid us so often,
you’re as smart as a dolphin,
and you assist us,
in our school by the ocean.
You’re wisdom is through the roof, You’re kindness, over the moon.
You are the team that supports us massively,
Our knowledge has improved dramatically.
We hold you in our hearts,
I hope we never part,
For you are our marvelous S.A.S.S,
And you always help our class.
By Lily.C and Marsala.S
Poem to S.A.S.S The people of S.A.S.S who are so helpful,
The wellbeing of school you support.
When it comes to the kids you are careful,
Your care and help will never fall short.
Although the teachers are the ones who coach,
And the principal the one who takes charge.
You always take care and kindly approach,
The care in your heart is greater than large.
You are the glue that holds us together,
So we can never give you enough thanks.
You are top when it comes to the ranks.
So enjoy yourself for the rest of S.A.S.S week,
For in pride and courage you shall always speak.

Year 4
Celebrating Book Week in
Year 4
Year 4 students were incredibly lucky this term to be one of the first audiences to read and meet the author of “The Fruit That Loved Itself”. Frank (the author) shared how he planned, wrote and designed the picture book with us before unveiling his plans for Remy the Rambutan. As a result of this inspirational visit, Year 4 students decided to create their very own picture book that could be shared with the school,
combining our writing, technology and collaborative skills.
Students worked in groups, sharing their ideas, developing characters, creating a problem to be resolved, and illustrating each page with care and attention. Using
google slides, students were able to confidently create a picture book that
conveyed a strong moral message.

Indigenous Literacy Day On Wednesday our students were immersed in ‘Dreamtime Stories’ recited by our Local Aboriginal Elders Aunty Maxine and Aunty
Ally. Students heard stories such as ‘Tiddalick the Frog’ and ‘How the Echidna Got Its Spikes’.
Students were actively engaged and showed great interest in the origins of ‘Dream Time’ stories and the moral behind each story.

Maroubra Fun Run 2019
Our school has now set up teams to participate in
‘The Juniors’ Maroubra Fun Run
On Sunday 27th October (end of Week 2 next term).
There are 3 teams:
Maroubra Bay Public School 4km Students Only
Maroubra Bay Public School 4km Adults & Community
Maroubra Bay Public School 8km Adults & Community
Go to http://maroubrafunrun.com.au/ for all the information on how to enter.
Students should join the ‘Students Only’ team. Prizes are awarded to the fastest student teams and our school has had some success over the years of participating in this event. However, this
is a fun run, and the main aim is to come along and join in with friends and family on the day.
On the Friday before the event, all students will be given a running singlet to wear for the race. Students who were given a fluorescent yellow Maroubra Bay last year might like to wear
it again.
Parents, family and friends of Maroubra Bay PS are asked to join one of the Adults and Com-munity teams – either 4km or 8km. The 8km is simply 2 laps of the 4km course. Several
Maroubra Bay staff will be joining these teams.
