From the Principal’s Desk Welcome back to Term 2. I trust that you all had an enjoyable break and participated in lots of family activities. I enjoyed the holidays with my daughter, Magdalene, in San Francisco. We played tourist and visited many sites in San Francisco including riding over the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting the seals at Pier 39, seeing the Painted Ladies (houses famous for their appearance in the sitcom Full House) and walking up and then down the very crooked Lombard Street. We also spent time at a very famous musical and art festival, Coachella, in the desert, where I got to see Jaiden Smith (son of Will Smith) and Ariana Grande perform along with many others. I also enjoyed my experience of sleeping in a Teepee. It was sad to leave Magdalene behind and I look forward to her return to Australia in October. Term 2 Calendar The Term 2 calendar is attached to this newsletter. Please note that while we have tried to ensure all events are on the calendar, dates are subject to change. We will continue to update Facebook, Skoolbag and Class Dojo to remind families of scheduled events and to share daily activities in our classrooms. NAPLAN 2019 In weeks 3 and 4, students in years 3 and 5 will undertake NAPLAN testing. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. This year our students will be participating in these tests online. Students have undertaken a preparation test last term and they have been working in class with Mrs Coleman to prepare them for the upcoming tests. A flyer has been sent home with further information on NAPLAN online for those students participating in these tests next week. Hawkesbury Enrichment Program The Hawkesbury Enrichment Program provides an opportunity for students to attend courses in their particular area of expertise or interest with other students from across the Hawkesbury during Weeks 9 and 10 in Term 2. Students who have been nominated will receive a letter of nomination and must return their note as soon as possible so that our school nominations can be submitted to the district selection committee. Maroota’s Biggest Morning Tea The SRC will be hosting a morning tea on Thursday 19th May from 11-11:30am. Students may wear yellow. The SRC will be running a cake stall on the day. All money raised will be donated to the Cancer Council

We are looking very dapper as we stand on assembly each morning dressed in full school uniform. Thank you to our students and parents for embracing our uniform policy and ensuring that we arrive at school dressed in the correct uniform. As it gets colder, our students will transition to the winter uniform and with the colder mornings they are arriving to school in jumpers. As the day warms up and during play especially students take their jumpers off and forget to pick them back up again. A frustrating time for parents because our jumpers do not always find their way home again. To help alleviate the frustration, please ensure that your child’s clothing is clearly labelled and it may be worth occasionally checking the name on the jumper that your child has brought home as we sometime pick up someone else’s jumper. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Woolworths Earn and Learn Our school is collecting the Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers which we can then swap for new school equipment; things like art and craft supplies, sports gear, teaching aids and much more. There are thousands of things we can choose from. So for any parents who shop at Woolworths, please collect the stickers and drop them in to our collection box, which will be located Glenorie Woolworths or send stickers to school to be placed in the box in the front office. Thanks for helping us out!

Spotlight on ANZAC Day
ANZAC Day took place in the school holidays. Many of our students took time out from their holidays to remember the importance of ANZAC Day by participating in the community march at Wisemans Ferry. Thank you to Jordin, Jayla, Knox, Jett, Elias, Cristian, Alina, Mathew, Madeline, Tarnoo, Lucy, Amelia, Jacob, Ryan, Caelan, Lucy and Flynn for attending this important ceremony and representing our school. We are very proud of you. I don’t know how many other schools would have a 57% attendance at an event that is held in the school holidays – well done Maroota. Thank you also to the parents who took their children to the event and ensured that they looked fabulous in their school uniform. Thank you to Miss Leanne who attended on the day and to Mrs Aylward who helped to organise the children and ensured that our school banner was there on the day.

Sports Report School Sport School sport will take place on both Thursday and Friday this term. Each Thursday, the students will be participating in the LAPS (Little Athletics Program for Schools) program. This program is run by a Mrs Walker a professional athletics coach and is generously funded by our P&C. Each Friday, the students will be undertaking coaching in Touch football and this program is delivered by our teachers. Small Schools Cross Country Carnival The Small Schools Cross Country will take place this Friday May 10. The carnival will be held at Woodbury Reserve, Spinks Road, Glossodia and is due to commence at 10:00am with a walk of the course. Students are asked to meet Mrs Coleman at 9:45am. They are required to wear full sports uniform, including their hat and must bring recess and lunch. I would like to wish our Cross Country team, Alina, Jack, Tyler, Rocky, Emily, Jacob, Matilda, Knox, Christian S., Tarnoo, Koby, Jett, Madeline, Crisitian, Lucy and Mathew all the very best. The carnival is a school day and Mrs Coleman is responsible for supervising the students. Miss Leanne will be present as team manager and all students must ask permission from either member of staff to go to the bathroom or canteen. The students are at the carnival to compete in their event and cheer their fellow students. The playground equipment at the site is an out of bounds area and under no circumstances are students permitted to bring balls or join in ball games. If your child is leaving the carnival early, please ensure that you sign out with Mrs Coleman or Miss Leanne. Miss Bennett’s Adventures at the Sydney Royal Easter Show During the school holidays, I had the opportunity to compete in the showing section at the Sydney Royal Easter Show with 3 different horses. For those who are not sure what ‘showing’ is, it is a competition based on the conformation, manners and overall presentation of the horse and the rider. Although I did not have any of my own horses competing there this year, I had a super successful show with the horses I rode. The first horse I competed on was ‘KT Miss Molly’ who came away with a champion and two 2nds. These were great results for her as it was only her second time competing at the show. The second horse I rode was ‘Calvin Park Bolero’, who came away with a 5th in his class. The third horse I got to compete on was ‘Bellevale Charisma’, and he received a 2nd, 3rd and two 5th’s. It was a very busy few days, but I felt privileged to be able to ride these horses and compete at such a huge show! Miss Bennett
