LATCO high pressure control and expansion relief valves should only be installed with SABS approved pressurised electric geysers of the corresponding pressure rating. See

diagram on the next page for further instruction.

By following the installation guidelines below you are guaranteed a high-performing result and many years of

trouble-free use.

1. LATCO Neptune 100, 200, 400 and 600kPa Twin Packs are factory pre-set and need no adjustment.

2. Valves must be installed above the geyser. By doing so, it is not necessary between the LATCO pressure control valve and the geyser.

3. Fitting the expansion valve vertically will reduce the possibility of dirt lodging in the valve.

4. As heating takes place, the water in the geyser will expand and cause intermittent dripping from the expansion valve – this is normal.

5. The drain from the valve should be protected against freezing andshouldbedischargeddownwardsintoagulley,flowerbed,etc., where expansion drip will not cause annoyance. On no account should expansion drip be discharged over a paved area or directly into waste, soil or vent pipes.

6. Whereveryhighmainspressureexists,rigidlyfixinletcoldwater supply pipe as close to the valve as possible to prevent vibrations.

7. Afterinitiallyfillingthegeyser,closethecoldwatermainssupply and clean all hemp, pipe cuttings, etc., from the valve filter.Thefiltermayberemovedforcleaningbyunscrewingthecapmarked‘filter-sif’ontheinletsideofthevalve.

8. Where hot and cold water feeds to mixing points are not bal-anced,fitanon-returnvalveonthehotwaterdrawofflinetoprevent high pressure cold water being forced back through thesystem.Thisfittingmustnotbeinstalledbetweenthevacuum and geyser outlet.

9. A 25mm expansion pipe must extend at least 2.5m vertically above both the valve and the highest hot water draw off point from the geyser.

10. With all hot taps closed, adjust the water level in the expan-sion pipe by slowly turning the adjusting nut clockwise, until allwaterflowsoutoftheexpansionpipe,thenturntheadjust-ing nut back one full turn.

11. Provide air breaks if the drain: o Exceeds a 6 metre run o Drops more than 1 metre o Runs horizontal after a fall

Which pressure valve should I use for my system?

Yes, however we recommend that the system be changed to a SANS 10254 balanced system.

Reaching new heights of delivery

In recent years, Joburg has been on a drive to regenerate its inner city to better accommo-date its current and future residents. As part of this huge regeneration strategy, a number of old and dilapidated high rise buildings are being completely stripped and converted into living apartments in areas such as Braamfon-tein, Joubert Park, Yeoville and Doornfontein.

During construction, there were a number of factorsthatwouldinfluencethesuccessfulcompletion of each and every project, one of which was the choice of plumbing system. Op-erating in areas where the crime rate is high, copper parts had to be ruled out due to theft risks on site.

Marley was initially involved in the project to convert a 17 storey building from copper to Pro-fit.Thesuccessofthisparticularprojectled them to secure a contract for the next building to be renovated, a 29 storey behe-moth that would serve over 450 living apart-ments.

Providing hot and cold water to the upper floorsofhighrisebuildingslikethisisafun-damental requirement and the main challenge for plumbing system engineers who must con-sider a number of variables such as available municipalwaterpressure,flowdemand,pipeand valve materials, riser locations, pressure regulating stations not to mention economics and even acoustics.

A winning system for high rise buildings

For the project,Pro-fitwasusedas part of a fusionPPR (Polypropylene Random) plastic piping system to supply water throughout the building. The lower storeys are supplied directly from the pressure in the public water main while the upper storeys are supplied from pressure-boosted main risers through a pressure reduction valve for each group.

PE (Polyethylene) has been widely used for the safe transport of potable water for more than 35 years with no harmful leaching of elements into the supply line. Addedtothistrackrecord,ThePro-fitsystemisJAS-WIC approved and has been tested and rated in ac-cordance with SANS ISO22391 for hot and cold water supply systems. The ingenuity in design and material propertiesofthesystemofferedmanybenefitsfortheproject:
