By Jacob Beck at the Chicago Auto ShowBP created a “refueling” customer experience at the Chicago Auto Show that shared the company’s sustainable energy story. Crack, an augmentation of IDL that designs and executes environmental consumer experiences, helped to actualize BP’s vision by engineering, fabricating, and installing an emotional brand experience in less than three weeks. The space was designed as a “green” environment with lush shaggy carpet, comfy couches, and walk-up bars with PowerMat stations to “refuel” cell phones, computers, and iPods. It was a massive 50 feet by 60 feet exhibit. This marked the first year that BP sponsored the event, and they wanted to provide a relaxing space where guests could “Refuel, Relax, and Recharge” while they explored the new car exhibitions.

Spring CleaningSpring cleaning came a little early this year in Matthews’ Human Resources Department. The department declared January 28 as the annual 5-S Day that encouraged employees to take the day and create a cleaner, more orderly, and safer working environment using five strategies:

• Sort and Remove – Clearing the clutter

• Shine and Inspect – Improving the appearance of the work area

• Set Locations – Determining the best storage locations

• System-a-tize – Making the process a routine procedure

• Stay the Course – Motivating and staying disciplined throughout the year

Deena Zadylak is getting serious about cleaning her work area.

Mark Scheer helps remove the mounds of garbage from the office.

This work space needed a lot of organization.

The 5-S strategy can change the way your workplace looks and how it functions. It clears the clutter, so employees can focus on the important elements of the job and establishes a clean environment.

The next levelToday’s news, current events, and entertainment are littered with information and commentary on high- tech devices and the roles they play in our lives.

More than 87 percent of adults in the US own a cell phone, and it’s estimated that there are more than two billion cell-phone users worldwide. Of these, Nielsen reports 31 percent are smart phones, and the statistic is rapidly rising with the purchase of high-tech devices, such as the iPad. In keeping with technology’s pace, Matthews is developing the next generation M-Pyre Control system for cremators.

The M-Pyre 2.0 offers new capabilities and brings remote control and troubleshooting to new heights with “Virtual Technicians” who can identify a problem down to it being a spring on a valve. If system adjustments are necessary, they can be done remotely through the Internet, making this level of virtual service an industry first. Usually, manufacturers (Matthews included) bring in technicians from out of town to make adjustments, but now problems can be remedied in minutes

Brigid Blaschak, Cremation

Russell Bateman, Marking Products

M-Pyre 2.0 will be developed in three phases:

• Phase one, available now, replaces

the limited capacity touch screen

with a complete PC connected to a

Siemens PLC.

• Phase two, planned for July 2011,

infuses this system with Virtual

Service capabilities, raising the

M-Pyre Efficiency Cycle to the

next level.

• Phase three, scheduled for January

2012, establishes a fluid connection

between customer, machine, and

Matthews via the Internet.

with a couple of strokes on a keyboard. The Matthews’ Virtual Technicians adjust components and settings on the unit to correct the dynamics of the cremator in a faster, more economical manner.

Communication via mobile technology is a large part of M-Pyre 2.0’s design, with information coming from the cremator to smart phones or other Internet-capable devices. It has the ability to send and store information regarding cremation stats, supplies needed, operator/owner remote monitoring, and manufacturer remote service.

The M-Pyre 2.0 cremator sends a message when supplies are running low and prepares an easy replenishment order. It also analyzes the cremation cycles and warns technicians of changes in cycle dynamics. Machine parts can now be proactively ordered to minimize mid-cycle disruptions.

Spontaneous Luncheon It all started when Nancy Bianchi, Matthews’ Memorial Arts Consultant, sent an email explaining she planned to bring in hot dogs for lunch the next day. Soon after, a flurry of Matthews’ employees replied with plans to bring chips, soft drinks, potato salad, paper plates, and more. Then, Matthews’ shop employees got involved and turned it into an impromptu company picnic.

It’s the Cremation Division – of course our buns are burnt.

Cecilia Lombardi and Jarrod Gogel man the grill.

Matthews Cremation is pleased to announce Robert Beare as the new Division Sales Manager. He will oversee the sales and marketing team, developing promotional strategies and directing initiatives.

Robert has 12 years’ experience in the automotive industry, partnering with manufacturers and dealers and assisting with the facilitation of their customer loyalty programs. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science with minors in finance and history from Florida State University, where he also played baseball. He currently lives in Lake Mary, Florida, with his wife, Melanie, and three children: Caroline, 13, Connor, 7, and Spencer, 4.In

The cheesiestCoding Application

Parents across the nation know that when it comes to macaroni and cheese, Kraft Food’s Macaroni & Cheese is “The Cheesiest.” Matthews helps move those boxes full of cheesy noodles from the production line through the grocery store line.

The Kraft Foods plant in Springfield, Missouri, manufactures more than 2,000 boxes of Macaroni & Cheese each minute. Matthews’ e-SolarMark laser coders print date codes on every one of the boxes as they move through production.

Kraft installed the e-SolarMark lasers in 2007 when the company wanted to move from continuous ink-jet (CIJ) coding to a more environmentally- and food-friendly coding option. The shift from CIJ to laser

Matthews Marking Products

WelcomesPete Shumway joined Matthews Marking Products as the new business development manager on February 21. He will be using his marketing talents to increase sales and awareness in packaging markets like food, beverage, consumer products, and pharmaceuticals. Pete will also help to expand Matthews’ brand presence among national accounts in these industries.

Pete previously worked as a sales engineer at the LeCroy Corporation, a leading provider of oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers, and related test and measurement solutions, where he supported technology

companies like Intel, Hewlett-Packard, and Boeing. Pete also worked for Holjeron – one of Matthews’ subsidiaries – as marketing and

customer service manager from 2004 to 2007.

Pete earned a master’s degree in business administration from Portland State University and a bachelor’s degree in general engineering from the US Naval Academy in

Annapolis, Md. Pete has professional experience in electronic test equipment and expertise in both applications and

technical arenas. Through his previous work with Holjeron, he is very familiar with Matthews’ motorized driven roller control products, as well as several of Matthews’ product

lines, making him a perfect fit for his new position.

Pete enjoys spending time with family and friends and participating in outdoor activities, like hiking, skiing, and lacrosse. He currently resides in Portland, Ore., with his wife Holly and three sons: David,19, Noah,16, and Elijah,12. Shumway also keeps busy with his sons as Boy Scout Assistant Scout Master and Youth Sports Coach in soccer and lacrosse.

meant that Kraft could become a greener facility, while simultaneously reducing production costs by eliminating chemical inks and solvents used in CIJ coding. The laser coding also made it easier for Kraft to comply with strict FDA regulations on safe food practices and recall capability.

The Macaroni & Cheese production lines move very quickly, and Kraft looked to Matthews to supply three e-SolarMark 30 Watt CO2 laser coders – one for each line. These laser coders were sought after for their ability to work with the high- speed production lines and print a quality date code on the box. The coders also met Kraft’s criteria of eliminating chemicals in the food production facility and generating a cost savings.

Matthews Scholarship Program Matthews’ employees can register their children online for educational assistance during the 2011-2012 school year from May 15 to July 1, 2011.

As the US Food and Drug Administration continues to regulate food safety, monitor food production facilities for quality

and safety, and enforce product recalls, the trend toward laser coding is expected to rise. Kraft – a

food industry leader – is on top of this trend with help from Matthews’ laser coders. Next time you get a craving for “The Cheesiest” macaroni and cheese, look closely on the side of the box, and you’ll see the difference that Matthews makes.

Tube Council Awards Colgate’s

Thanks to collaborative work produced by Matthews Brand Solutions Americas in Boston and Pittsburgh, the Tube Council selected Colgate’s My First Toothpaste tube as the best in the dentifrice* category for 2010. This tube was a collaborative effort between Matthews, Colgate’s in-house design team, and a creative agency in Mexico.

The tube manufacturer provided a high-density monolayer tube, which was printed on using the flexographic print process. A matte coating was used on the standard white sleeve to complement the look of the carton and enhance the cartoon animal graphics designed with

young children in mind.

Matthews Brand Solutions Americas team based in Boston offered their on-

site resources to help with this project. Although the design does not appear to be very complex, it required retouching and multiple screen effects. It was also important to keep tight registration where several words contained letters of different colors.

The Matthews team began working with Colgate in 2009 and, since that time, has grown to share the workload with the Pittsburgh branch. This dual-site arrangement

allows Matthews to handle an increasing volume of products, while providing the

customer with a seamless experience and, now, award-winning work.

*Dentifrice is a paste, liquid, or powder used to help maintain oral hygiene. The most essential dentifrice recommended by dentists is toothpaste, which is used in conjunction with a toothbrush to help remove food debris and dental plaque.
