Markets for LiB
1. Market of LiB is expandingFuji Keizai predicts:Year 2012:1.1 Trillion yenYear 2017: 1.7 Trillion yen
Applications: Note PC, Smart Phone, Video Camera, EV, HV, Factory backup etc.In Japan, HV and EV are already soldin 2011 using LiB and NiH.Companies of US and EU will startproduction of EV using LiB in 2013.

Markets for LiB
2. Application is shiftingApplication of LiB started from cameras and spread to Note PC, Smart Phone and further to EV/HV/PHV and Large Storage.
METI forecast:Battery Market to grow to 20 trillion yen by 2020.‐ Cars ‐‐ 8 trillion yen‐ Storage at Home/Bldg.
‐‐ 5 trillion yen‐ Storage at Factories
‐‐ 7 trillion yen9
Markets for LiB
3. EVSales of EV are not growing as expected earlier. Fuji Keizai predicts the market to reach 1 million around 2020.
10
Markets for LiB
Nissan‐Renault: ‐ Plans to sell 1.5 mn EV by 2016 (acc.). ‐ Capacity to produce batteries for350,000 EV yearly. ‐ Reality is that Nissan sold only50,000 EV (acc.) by January 2013.
The global market of EV will reach 100,000 in 2016.
4. HVToyota’s sales of HV reached ca. 1.2 mn EV in 2012.Honda’s sales of HV are estimated at 20% of Toyota’s. Rest of the world combined will be as large as Honda’s.
11
Markets for LiB
5. Idling Stop System (ISS) & Micro Hybrid Vehicle (MHV)Due to stricter emission control, ISS is installed in more cars in Japan and Micro Hybrid Vehicles are getting more popular in EU. In both cases, a generator is used as a motor to drive a car. MHV has a bigger power than ISS.
12
Markets for LiB
6. Electric BicyclesIn China more than 20 mn electric bicycles are sold yearly. More and more electric bicycles are equipped with LiB rather than Pb batteries.
13
Markets for LiB
7. Electricity storage/supply at factory, office & home(1) Batteries must be equipped with Solar Cells and Wind Power
Generators to minimize fluctuation.(2) Batteries will be used for emergency and to cut the peak use.
14

15
(1) Capacity by Weight and VolumeOrganic materials or metal compounds.
(2) Power by Weight and VolumeOrganic materials or metal compounds.
(3) Life TimeStructure of chemicals and crystals
(4) SafetySolid electrolyte, structure of crystals
(5) CostFe, Mn is cheaper than Co, Ni.
16
Technologies for LiB
Li can realize high voltage and capacity. No use of water is required and dendrite is formed. Both demand high technology for safety.
17
Technologies for LiB
Basic structure and materials of LiB(1) Cathode material: Li Cobalt oxide(2) Anode material: Graphite(3) Separator: PE membrane(4) Electrolyte: EC, VC

19
(1) Cathode materials‐ LiCoO2 used for Notebook PCs but not suitable for EV/HEV asCo is too expensive and production is mostly limited to Congo.‐ LNM, NMC, LFP and other materials are under testing tooptimize cost performance.‐ It is not very clear which material will become main compound.

22
(2) Anode MaterialsGraphite will be the main compound for the coming years.
There are however different kinds of graphite.1) Soft carbon2) Hard carbon3) Synthetic graphite4) Natural graphite
Combination of carbon materials will be used for better cost performance.

Materials for LiB
(4) ElectrolyteLiPF6 is a single practical usable compound.Fluorine is required in order to produce LiPF6, but the supply of fluorine is quite limited. In the EU, Lanxess (CHEMPARK) and Solvay can produce fluorine on a large scale.

(5) Binders to coat electrode materials on Cu foilAnode and cathode materials are powder‐like materials. To make such materials adhere to Cu foils binders are used. PVdF is widely used for high grade LiB. NMP is used as solvent for PVdF. SBR is used for ordinary grades in large amounts. Also CMC is required to control viscosity of the mixture of electrode materials.

Materials for LiB
(5) Binders …PVdF is a binder for high grade LiB and needs NMP as solvent.PTFE can be used as a binder without using NMP as solvent but water.
31
Materials for LiB
(5) Binders …SBR is used as binder for ordinary LiB. CMC should be used for viscosity control.
