CELEBRITY chef Peter Vaughan will open the Strawberry Fayre at Woodborough Garden Centre on Saturday, June 23 as people from all over the Pewsey Vale celebrate the first picking of the season’s strawberries.Visitors will be able to kick-off the pick your own season and to find out what fresh strawberries straight from the plant really taste like. Peter will declare the fair open at 11am and then demonstrate some tasty recipes from the garden centre’s own produce. There will be plenty of other food to sample and buy as there will be stalls offering everything from cup cakes to chutney. Hobbs House Bakery – made famous by TV’s Fabulous Baker Brothers – will have an array of beautiful loaves to try and buy. There will also be local cheeses, marinades, relishes and local ales.Craft stalls offering clothes, jewellery and gifts will offer and opportunity to buy unusual gifts. There will be a BBQ offering sausages & burgers from their own rare breed pigs and a hog roast, along with the ever popular beer and Pimms tent.A new addition to this year’s fair is a bake-off competition in which members of local WIs and other creative cooks will test their skills at making a Victoria sponge, fruit scones and strawberry jam. Their efforts will be judged by WI expert Sylvia Blacklock.Take time to enjoy a cream tea on the café terrace while the Kennet Vale brass band plays a selection of great tunes. There will be craft workshops for children and adults and if you venture further, to the back of the garden centre you will be rewarded by the chance to meet two of the latest additions to the centre – twin pygmy goats. Other animals likely to be spotted are Kune Kunes Dotty and Lily, Vietnamese pot belly Chops and a selection of pigs and pigletsThe centre’s farm shop is gaining a reputation for stocking a large array of wonderful produce including gourmet ready meals, cakes, breads, and sauces as well as fruit, vegetables and meat. Two new types of sausages, created from the centre’s own pigs, have just been added to the pork range.The centre’s café will be open to provide drinks and home cooked food throughout the day.Woodborough owner Claire Rourke said: “It should be a great day for all the family. It will be an ideal opportunity for people who have not been to Woodborough recently to see just what we can offer not just in the way of plants but so much else as well.”The fair will be open from 11am to 4pm.
