MARKETING Degrees at the University of Chester The University of Chester offers two specialist degree programmes in Marketing: BA Single Honours Marketing BA Combined Honours Marketing Both courses offer exciting and innovative opportunities for students to study at Chester. The programmes have been designed to align with the requirements of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the UK’s professional body for the profession. Students completing the programmes will gain signicant accreditation for the CIM’s professional qualications. . For the single honours programme we can offer a Dual award. This means that students successfully completing the single honours degree, will only need to complete two modules out of twelve with CIM to attain a postgraduate diploma in marketing. Those studying combined honours, will gain entry points to Diploma Level, this means that out of twelve modules students will only have to complete four CIM modules to attain a professional qualication A career in marketing provides a wide range of employment opportunities, from involvement in specialist marketing activities such as advertising and promotion, to new careers developing in Internet and technology-based marketing. The Marketing degrees at Chester have been designed to reect the changing nature of marketing, bringing together the traditional theories of marketing management with new thinking. Key themes include: Wider environmental factors that constrain the activities of marketing managers. This will encompass the various processes, procedures and practices for the effective management of marketing activities in organisations. Activities of marketing managers, such as promotion, distribution and product development. Organisational perspective of marketing. This will encompass the internal aspects, functions and processes of organisations, including their diverse nature, purposes, structures, operations and management, together with the individual and corporate behaviours and cultures that exist within and between organisations. Strategic decision-making, including the development of appropriate marketing management policies and strategies. (Dual award with Chartered Institute of Marketing) The single honours Marketing degree is available as either a three-year degree or a four-year sandwich degree. It is designed to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to practice marketing in a modern dynamic organisation. It also provides opportunities for you to concentrate on specic areas of marketing, to help you develop your career in a specialist area, and to build broader marketing skills required by the smaller business. Level 4 (Year 1) Marketing is the centre of the modern business organisation and this requires marketers to have an insight into all the key areas of business and management. This year introduces key marketing ideas and those areas required to understand the broader aspects of business and management, providing a sound basis on which to develop your marketing knowledge (human resource management and nance). Level 5 (Year 2) This year focuses in more depth on the core principles of marketing, essential to all organisations. It includes studying how and why customers buy products, the different ways of researching customers’ requirements and markets, and the advertising and promotion of products. You will have the opportunity to build your practical skills in the Work Based Learning module, and gain a greater insight into the range of exciting and challenging activities that can form part of a career as a marketer. Students opting for a four-year sandwich degree take a full year out in a work placement, between the second and nal years. Level 6 (Year 3/4) The nal year gives you the exibility to become involved in more specialised areas of marketing including Strategic Marketing Management, International Marketing, Direct Marketing and Marketing Communications. These modules are supported by the Strategic Marketing module, which draws together all that you have learnt over the three years and sets it in the context of the broader development and management of organisations. The University of Chester offers two specialist degree programmes in Marketing:

You may specialise in Marketing as a major, equal or minor subject, and it is offered in combination with over 40 other subjects at Chester. A range of marketing specifi c modules are studied, supported by some broader business modules at Years 1 and 2. These enable you to understand marketing activities in a wider business context, and will prepare you to use your marketing knowledge effectively in a business environment.

Combined honours Marketing students are recommended to take a Research Project (double module) in Marketing, if taking Marketing as a major or equal subject within their combined honours degree.

A range of assessment methods are used across all modules. Typically, you will be assessed by a combination of assignments, examinations, group projects and seminar contributions. Individual projects form a major part of the fi nal year degree assessments.

A minimum of 240-280 UCAS points are required for Single or Combined Honours which must be obtained from GCE A levels or equivalent such as:

• BTEC National Diploma/Certifi cate: merit/distinction profi le • OCR National Extended Diploma/Diploma: merit/distinction profi le • Irish Highers/Scottish Highers: B in four subjects • International Baccalaureate: 24 points • QAA recognised Access to HE Diploma, Open College Units or Open University Credits • The Advanced Diploma: acceptable on its own
