Mammography is considered to be the best diagnostic tool
that helps in early detection of Breast Cancer
Source:
Introduction
Mammography is the process of using low-energy-X-rays (usually around 30 peak Kilo voltage) to examine the
human breast
It is used as a diagnostic and a screening tool for breast cancer
Mammograms use doses of ionizing radiation to create images
Radiologists then analyze the image for any abnormal findings
Types of Mammography Tests
•Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM)
• Low energy x-rays pass through, exactly like SFM but
are recorded by means of an electronic digital
detector instead of the film
• The electronic image can be displayed on a video
monitor like a TV, computer or printed onto film
• The radiologist can manipulate the digital
mammogram electronically to magnify an area,
change contrast or alter the brightness
•Screen-film (or Analog) Mammography (SFM)
• SFM is a radiographic technique in which a special
single-emulsion film and high-detail intensifying
screens are used
• The technique provides a fine image at radiation
exposure levels of less than 1 rad, compared with
older methods that generated radiation levels of as
much as 16 rad
• Record the images onto traditional film
