I SITUATION ON THE LOCAL MARKET
I.I MARKET OF TOYS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC IS GROWING
According to Toys Association of the Czech Republic, the toy market in CZ grew by
3 % in the year 2014 and reached the turnover of CZK 6 billion. Same dynamics of
growth is also estimated for the year 2015.
As for the structure of sales, 15 % toys sold in the Czech Republic is manufactured
in the Czech Republic. Revenues of Czech producers of toys went up by 9 % in
2014 (data from 2015 still not available).

As for foreign suppliers to the Czech market, most significant is China, followed by
Hungary, Denmark (LEGO) and Germany. Total imports of toys to the Czech Republic
reached the value of USD 925 mil. in the year 2015. Imports from Thailand reached the
value of 6,7 mil. USD and growth of 1,3 % was recorded in 2015.
The average spendings for toys in the Czech Republic reach CZK 3 950,- per kid
annualy.

Interesting is that toys are in fact seasonal product and more than 50 % of revenues is
reached in the pre-Christmas period (i.e. during the last quarter of the year).
Concerning structure of sales of toys, leading items are plastic toys (share of 32 %,
e.g. Lego, Duplo, Playmobil brands), followed by plush and textile toys (share of 26
%), puzzles and games (11 %), wooden toys (share of 10 %), baby-dolls and puppets (8
%), toys operated by remote control (7 %), toys of metal (6%).
Considering the latest trends in toys, among the most popular toys for last Christmas
(in 2015) were Lego Star Wars, Lego Elsa´s Sparkling Ice Castle, Lego Emma ´s
House, interactive Digi Birds, drones, action-packed games such as Chrono Bomb or
Ghost Hunters, followed by traditional Czech table games and wooden and plush toys.

AND CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR
In the toy market of the Czech Republic, following features can be seen:
- positive demographic development called baby boom
- lower purchasing power of the group of population raising children
- changing structure of demand
- other factors.
The strongest influence of the mentioned factors, on both production and sale of toys, is
that of the positive demographic trends. The population statistics from the Statistical
Yearbook follows.

Currently, the Czech Republic is facing positive demographic development called
baby boom. Although, there was adverse demographic development since 1994
(negative natural increase of population), the situation started to improve since the year
2000 (as the strong years of population born in the seventies of last century, started to

have babies). Since the year 2006, even the trend of positive natural increase of
inhabitants re-appeared (with slight decrease in 2013 and 2015).
As for the target group for toys, we can say that the number of children equals the
number of potential customers. According to the research made by the Association for
Toys and Play, in the Czech Republic the toys are mainly purchased by grandparents.
Large market for toys are also kindergartens, schools etc. This institutional market
puts emphasis especially on educational toys. Currently, due to baby boom going on,
there is shortage of capacity of kindergartens and pre-school establishments. The
Government strives to support opening of new kindergartens not only by public sector,
but also by private sector and by big companies for children of their employees, so there
is potential for growth of this market segment.
Adverse phenomenon in demand for toys is the declaining purchasing power of groups
having middle and small incomes. It is a general phenomenon that the best-situated
groups of population have the fewest children. Average number of children in Czech
family is currently 1,3 (for comparison, 25 years ago it was 2 children per family).
The third major influence on the sale of toys is shorter period for which children
play, proved by psychological researches. Over the last thirty years, this period has
declined from 15 to less than 12 years of age. Classical toys are being replaced by
electronic toys, games and devices, especially mobile phones, tablets, computers, and
not only in the higher age cathegory. For example, 20 – 30 years ago, girls used to play
with Barbie Dolls until the age of 10, nowadays mostly from the age of 3 to 5 only.
According to Arcadia Research company, currently in so called cathegory of “tweens“
(children aged between 8 -12), there is high demand for electronic devices, such as
MP3 players, mobile telephones etc. This trend is bound to continue, and producers and
distributors will have to adapt themselves to it.
On the other hand, positive influence of tourism can be seen. Toys, especially puppets,
dolls in national costumes, plush toys, and classical wooden toys are in demand among
foreign tourists as souveniers and gifts.
According to information from Association for Toy and Play, two thirds of the retail
trade turnover is made by toys for children up to the age of 6 years.
Average spendings for toys per kid in the Czech Republic reached CZK 3 950 in
2015 (USD 165,-).
As for the changes in the consumer behaviour after the year 1989, introduction of
market economy was accompanied by changes in consumer preferences in general.
Imported products flooded shops and consumers were eager for items which were

previously unavailable on the market. In case of toys, LEGO, DUPLO, BARBIE
DOLLS and RAVENSBURGER PUZZLE became extremely popular. Currently,
growing popularity of interactive toys with built-in electronics can be seen. Among
boys, remote control cars are extremely popular while girls enjoy playing with
electronic kitchen, iron, washing machines, dolls (such as Chou Chou or Baby Anabell).

The table above shows development of exports and imports of toys. We can see, that the
Czech Republic is net exporter of toys (exports are higher than imports). In the year
2015, volume of export of toys was 2,6 times higher than imports. During January –
May 2016, exports of toys increased by 8 % while imports went up by 13 %.
During last 5 years (2010 – 2015), Czech export of toys went up 78 %, while value of
imports increased by 50 %. Czech exports of toys recorded higher dynamics than
imports.

Based on statistics of the year 2015, toys in the total value of 924 mil. USD were
imported to the Czech Republic, a slight decrease of -1,6 % was recorded. During the
period Jan – May 2016, toy imports to the Czech Republic grew by 12,9 %.
As even large global manufacturers, such as MATTEL Co. have factories in China, it is
not surprising, that China was number one supplier of toys to the Czech Republic with
market share of 28,8 % in 2015, followed by Hungary (market share of 21,8%),
Denmark (market share of 18,7 %), Germany (10,9 %) and Poland (4,4 %). Market
share of Thailand is below 1 %, however growing trend was recorded during past years.
Large imports from Hungary and Denmark are because of LEGO, LEGO has recently
expanded its factory in Hungary, number of employees is supposed to reach 4 000 by
2020. LEGO operates also large factory in the Czech Republic. Imports from small
country such as Malta are thanks to PLAYMOBILE factory located there. Imports of
toys from Mexico are due to factories of MATEL and LEGO. Apart from China,
MATEL operates also factories in Indonesia and Thailand.

II.II STRUCTURE OF IMPORTS
In the year 2015, largest segment of toys imported to the Czech Republic was
reperesented by HS 9503 0035 CONSTRUCTION SETS OF PLASTICS that made
51,3 % of total imports of toys (e.g. LEGO). Share of HS 9503 0095 OTHER TOYS
OF PLASTICS on total imports in 2015 reached 13,0 %, followed by TOYS
REPRESENTING ANIMALS (stuffed or not) under HS 95030049 + HS 95030041
with the share of 7,9 %.
III. MARKETING INFORMATION
III.I CZECH PRODUCERS
Although the Czech Republic is a country with toy making tradition, locally produced
toys sell better on the export market than at home. There are about 300 toy makers in
the Czech Republic, producing range of wooden and plastic toys, puppets, stuffed toys,
construction models and sets. For domestic producers of toys, strongest competition
comes from China. For example, as for stuffed toys/animals, prices of Czech producers
can compete with China in case of toys bigger than 50 cms, as for big toys,
transportation costs from China make significant part of final price.

DINO TOYS (www.mojedino.cz)
DINO TOYS Ltd. was etablished in the year 1993 and is the biggest producer of toys in
CZ, reaching the turnover of 121 mil. CZK in 2014. Among major products are: desk

games, playing cards, puzzle, plush toys, plastic toys etc. Share of desk games on total
revenues makes 40 % and their popularity keeps growing.
DETOA (www.detoa.cz)
DETOA Co. was established in the year 1908 and is the biggest and the oldest producer
of wooden toys, parts of desk games and wooden parts of musical instruments in the
Czech Republic. Turnover in the year 2014 reached 82 mil. CZK, number of employees
is 150.

EFKO KARTON (www.efko.cz)
EFKO KARTON Co. was established in the year 1993 and currently operates 2
factories in the Czech Republic. Main products are: toys of plastics, desk games,
puzzles etc. Turnover in the year 2014 reached CZK 60 mil.
MORAVSKA USTREDNA BRNO (www.mubrno.cz)
MU is traditional company with a long history, founded in 1909, producer of stuffed
toys, puppets and made to order costumes. The group has factories in Czech and than
200 employees. MU has successfully followed the expensive but effective strategy of
licensing popular Czech cartoon characters such as Little Mole and his friends. The
company exports to more than 25 countries and is large domestic toy exporter. Most of
sales take place in Germany, but the company´s popular cartoon character Little Mole
(Krtecek) is sold well also in Japan, China.

MERKUR TOYS (www.merkurtoys.cz)
Another traditional Czech producer is MERKUR Co., founded in 1920, making metal
construction sets, model trains and steam engines. In 1990´s, the company was rescued
from bankruptcy and gradually re-gained its former popularity.

KOVAP Co. (www.kovap.cz)
KOVAP Co. is traditional producer of high quality mechanical metal toys. The
company was established in the year 1950, current number of employees is 50 and
belong to significant European producers of metal toys. Significant part of production
goes for export.
III. II LEGO PRODUCTION IN THE CZECH REUBLIC
High imports from Denmark are consequence of the fact, that LEGO GROUP started
production in CZ in the year 2001. Moreover, in the year 2005, LEGO moved all
production operations from Switzerland to the Czech Republic. Since the year 2006,
factory in Kladno is responsible for processing and packaging of LEGO´s products.

In the year 2006, LEGO GROUP also built a central warehouse for whole Europe in
Jirny near Prague, from where LEGO products to whole Europe are distributed. Number
of employees of LEGO GROUP in CZ is 2 500. Apart from the Czech Republic, in
Europe, LEGO is produced in Hungary (DUPLO kits for kids younger than 5 years) and
in Denmark. High market share of Denmark on the Czech toy market can be explained
by the fact, that parts of LEGO construction sets are imported to CZ, where processing
and packaging takes place and then final products are distributed to the whole Europe.
IV DISTRIBUTION OF TOYS
As for channels of distribution, the biggest market player is the WORMELEN
GROUP operating 90 toy chain stores under brand names:
BAMBULE – 46 stores (www.bambule.cz)
SPARKYS – 18 stores (www.sparkys.cz)
HM STUDIO – 24 stores (www.hmstudio.cz)
Originally, WORMELEN was owner of BAMBULE stores only, however in the year
2015 WORMELEN group acquired competitors´stores of SPARKYS and HM
STUDIO. Under WORMELEN group belongs also EP LINE SE – toys importing
company (www.epline.cz). Apart from the chainstores belonging under WORMELEN,
EP LINE SE supplies: TESCO stores, GLOBUS hypermarket stores, ALBERT
hypermarkets, MAKRO / METRO CASH & CARRY, CEPRO and BENZINA petrol
stations (plush toys), DM, POMPO, DRACIK, WIKY etc.
Among other significnat players on Czech market are POMPO chain stores
(www.pompo.cz) and DRACIK (www.dracik.cz). POMPO has 86 stores and
DRACIK 77 stores.
The popularity of e-shops has been growing in the Czech Republic, currently there are
more than 1 500 e-shops offering toys.

In the year 2016, in the centre of Prague was opened the first store of HAMLEYS
U.K. in Central Europe. The total selling space of 6 000 sqm makes it the second
biggest toy store in Europe. 40 % of toys at HAMLEYS are of HAMLEYS brand, toys
of Czech producers make 10 %. Czech company INEXAD (www.inexad.cz) is holder
of the licence for the whole region of Central Europe. The first shop in Prague is a
flagship, INEXAD plans to open stores in Austria, Poland and Hungary during next 5
years, however not as big as the one in Prague.

From 1st May 2004, the Czech Republic became an EU member and since than EU
customs legislation applies on all imports.

V.II REGULATIONS
Prior to putting toys on the market, manufacturers and importers must have them tested
by the state testing authority according to the strict criteria of the European Union,
stipulated in the European Council Directive 2009/48/EC called TSD – TOY
SAFETY DIRECTIVE. The mentioned directive stipulates requirements of technical
standards, such as mechanical and physical properties, flammability, migration of
certain elements, graphical symbol for age warning labelling, safety of electronic toys
etc.
In order to safeguard safety, the TSD obliges manufacturers to ensure that their toys can
be identified. This can be done by using a type, batch, serial/model number or other
lements allowing the toy to be identified. The toy must also bear the manufacturer´s
name and registered name / mark.

VI. STRATEGIES TO PENETRATE THE CZECH MARKET
Toys must be in accordance with strict criteria of safety of the EU in the way they are
made and the composition of material, and pose absolutely no risk to health.
As the toys from Asia have reputation of cheap products of lower quality and many
cases occured that the health and safety criteria were not met (especially China), we
would suggest for Thai exporters to focus on quality, safety and enviromental awareness
aspects when promoting Thai toys. To differentiate from other Asian countries (China
etc.) would be crucial.
The first step for Thailand to take, should be connected with making toys from Thailand
better known, for example by attending fairs held in the Czech Republic, by co-
operating with domestic importers and wholesalers, advertising in specialized
magazines in co-operation with local importers.
Toys made of plastics or textile, puzzles as well as educational games have prospective
to penetrate the Czech market. We do not recommend to import wooden toys from
Thailand as there is long tradition in manufacturing in the Czech Republic and fierce
competition among domestic manufacturers.
