The Holidays are past – time to look forward to

Spring weather. They tell me it is on the way. Looking through the draft for this month’s Bow

Watch I noticed there were several announcements that I felt might need to be reiterated - opportuni-ties presented by or through the club that will re-quire potential participating members and/or their families to plan ahead in order to fully take ad-vantage of programs or to fit events into their schedules. The foremost of these in my mind are the upcoming openings of registration for the club (BYSC) ‘Summer Camp’ sessions and the Junior Sail-ing of Beaufort (JSB) ‘Learn to Sail’ sessions. First, I will point out that the two are distinct and separate programs with different staffs, agendas, and goals – if you are not familiar with the differences between these two programs and/or need clarifica-tion, I suggest you contact Milledge or Dylan in the office, or contact me. But most importantly, if you are interested in either program I urge you to not hesitate once the registrations open. Both programs have become hugely popular over the past few years and many of the sessions fill up quickly.

Next, in response to several BYSC members expressing interest in adult sailing lessons/classes,

JSB is in the early stages of developing a sailing instruction program for adults using the US Sailing format and certified instructors. If you or someone you know might be interested in participating in such a program this coming spring or fall, NOW is the time to express that interest and to give input on the scheduling, agenda, etc. See the letter later in this Bow Watch and/or contact Frank Pontious for more details.

Lastly, in my opinion there is no better way to get involved with BYSC than to volunteer for on-

the-water duty during our many races/regattas. Two upcoming events related to those opportu-nities are the Mark/Safety Boat Operation meeting scheduled for February 21 and the ‘River Rat’ training session on March 28. No prior experience required – you will be taught everything you need to know and more to function as a valued race committee member. Please put these events on your calendars, come to them, and then sign up for a couple of duty days during the summer. My guess is that you will enjoy it and afterwards will be glad you did.

As always, I hope to see each of you at the club enjoying the many activities, events and infor-

Call for River Rats!

Training for new River Rats begins at 12:30 PM Saturday, March 28

Experienced Rats and PROs should come to dock at 3 PM BYSC is looking for new River Rats! These specially trained club members manage our club races and regattas.

Wearing their trademark yellow t-shirts, they set the race course, start the races, record the finishes, help capsized

sailors, manage the marks and keep the competition running smoothly.

This year's training will outline signal boat, mark boat and safety boat duties, answer your questions and get you

scheduled to start working on the water! At about 3 PM, we will go down to the dock for an on-water session to

bring it all together.

Training continues during our Spring Series races - first race day is Sunday, March 29, and racing continues

throughout April and May. On-water roles include PRO (Principal Race Officer), signal boat crew members (timer,

flagman, line spotter and recorder) and mark/safety boat skippers and crew.

Our goal is to have the best race management team in SAYRA (the Southeast Yacht Racing Association), with

enough members so we always have a full roster and no one has to work too often. And we're doing it! The River

Rats get big kudos every year at our Lowcountry Regatta and at the regional and national regattas we are invited to

host at our club.

BYSC STEAK NIGHT

Junior Sailing News In high school sailing news, Beaufort Academy & Beaufort High sailed in

Savannah January 10. The scores were very close all day between the top 3

schools. Going into the final race Wando & Beaufort High were tied in B Divi-

sion with each school having 4 -1sts & 4-2nds. The final race put Wando

slightly ahead in A & B Division. Beaufort High finished 2nd in A, 2nd in B

and 2nd Overall. Beaufort Academy finished 3rd in A, 3rd in B & 3rd Overall.

The high school sailors are trying to learn Team Racing on Wednes-

day afternoons. If any adults are interested joining the practice, we

could use a few more sailors to round out the teams.

We also hosted a 420 & opti clinics with coach Jenn Chamberlin.

Our next opti clinic will be Saturday March 21st. The 420 clinic was

moved to Sunday March 22 to allow sailors to crew for the Jean Ribaut

Cup.

If anyone needs additional crew for the Jean Ribaut cup please con-

tact the high school coach Peter Gamble.

Patrick Mazzeo was recently appointed the 2015 MAISA(Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing

Assoc.) representative for the College of William & Mary Sailing Team. Patrick attended the MAISA

annual meeting held in Annapolis in December. Most of the attendees where college coaches, but

colleges with student run teams send their student representatives. They also held the draft during the

annual meeting where colleges bid for preferred regattas & dates. William & Mary successfully won

their bid to host the Spring South MAISA Qualifier for Nationals.

I've also attached a picture of Patrick & his crew Abe Krueger sailing in A Division at the Tom

Curtis Memorial hosted by Georgetown this Fall. It's funny because they look so much alike, most

people can't tell them apart.

Junior Sailing

Charleston Community Sailing hosted an Advanced Club 420 Clinic Janu-

ary 17-18. Jacksonville University Coaches Jon Faudree and Julia Wiesner

coached the 8 boats. Oscar Evans, Chris Hoogenboom, Walter Gnann, Alex-

ander Mazzeo and Patrick Mazzeo attended the clinic. The sailors were able

to work in light air conditions the first day & heavy air the second day. I've

attached a photo of the Beaufort sailors finishing a practice race in 1st, 2nd

& 3rd place. The other photo is Alex Mazzeo with Oscar Evans trapesing's

for the first time.

There have been a number of comments from BYSC members that they were inter-

ested in learning how to sail. Junior Sailing of Beaufort, Inc. puts on the popular Learn

to Sail program in June for juniors but there has not been a major organized program

for teaching adults.

We are exploring the idea of putting together a sailing instruction program at BYSC

that would occur in the spring and fall but first we need some idea of the level of inter-

est. If you think that you would be interested please reply to this e-mail and let me

know your interest and the general level of sailing experience.

The initial idea is to have a USS certified instructor teach beginning sailing in club

Sunfish. It seems that 12-16 hours of indoctrination and training would be suitable for

folks to feel confident in sailing a small boat in the Beaufort River. The 12-16 hours

would probably be over a four day period, such as: 2 hrs on a Thurs. and Fri. night for

on-shore indoctrination and parts of Sat. and Sun. for on-the-water training. There

would be a cost but it has not been determined yet and is somewhat dependent on the

level of interest.

The month of January has already come and gone, and we have new updates for the summer camp that

I would like to share with you. We will be having an active role in social media, as well as using an easy reg-

istration system for early sign up.

The BYSC Summer camp has a Facebook page! By searching in the Facebook search menu for the

Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club Summer camp, you will come across our active page that will update you

on the fun activities your children are participating in, as well as a continuous update of the weekly sched-

ules for all of the weeks of camp. But to make the process even easier, we have created a link to the Face-

book page on the BYSC homepage. Just scroll down to the bottom of the homepage screen, and a link for the

summer camp will be there.

The summer camp is geared toward BYSC club members, giving you the opportunity to sign up for

your favorite spot in the summer before we open registration to non-members. This does NOT guarantee that

your child will have a spot in the camp if you wait to sign up later in the summer. We will open registration

to BYSC members in early March, and then allow non-members to sign up for camp later in the spring. If

you wait to sign up for camp until a week before the camp starts, there is a real possibility that the week you

want will be full.

Registration is limited to 60 campers per week, so please make sure you plan your summer vacation

and weeks of camp early, so that you can secure a spot of your choosing when registration opens. Registra-

tion will be processed online this year, with no paper registrations. BYSC Summer Camp is using EZRegis-

ter this year, and will have all of the necessary information to register on that website.

It is exciting to bring to your attention that we will be having highly qualified staff working with

your children this summer. All of the BYSC summer camp staff will be trained as American Red

Cross Lifeguards and have CPR and First Aid certifications, as well as go through a USCG boating

safety and operation course. Our staff will be well prepared to lead water activities such as kayaking

trips, paddle boarding adventures, tubing on the river, and touring the Inter Coastal Waterways look-

ing for dolphins, sunny beaches, and other exotic wildlife the Beaufort River has to offer.

The BYSC Summer Camp will have six separate weeks throughout the summer, starting in

June 8. We will not have camp during the week of June 29- July 3 due to the Low Country Regatta

and Independence Day. The camp will be for ages 5-12 years of age, and will have separate groups

that are age appropriate. At the end of the summer, we will have a unique Fishing Camp that will fo-

cus on fishing, ecology and marine science. The age for the Fishing camp will be 10- 14 years of

age.

Our summer camp will be a balance between water sport oriented activities and marine sci-

ence. The camp will have boating, kayaking, paddle-boarding, tubing and river tours. We will also

provide science topics such as fishery science, fishing techniques, anatomy, marine science, ecology

and natural history. We will also offer field sports, pool time and arts and crafts.
