An amazing project that began on a clear spring morning was completed just a few months later on a muggy August afternoon: ADFAC’s 25th Anniversary House.
This unique home, the result of a historic partnership between UT-Battelle and ADFAC, was built using over 950 hours of volunteer labor from 78 ORNL employees. Taking place over 5 Saturdays, the volunteers constructed the framing, flooring and walls as well as planted dozens of plants, shrubs and trees on the property. Additional
New home built by Team UT-Battelle marks ADFAC’s 25th anniversaryconstruction support was provided by Chr is Lane Construction.
The 1,000 square foot home, with 3 bedrooms and 1 ½ bathrooms, is ENERGY STAR certified t o e n s u r e l o w e r energy consumption. In fact, this home is the best rated ENERGY STAR home ADFAC has completed to date!
The new homeowner is Carly Gilbert, a long-time Oak Ridge resident and first-time homebuyer. Carly, who works in early childhood education
and is expecting her first child in October, had a hands-on experience in the construction
of her new home. On the first week of the build, Carly was on site beside the dozens of Team UT-Battelle volunteers, helping to hammer nails and
measure lumber. Carly also worked with ADFAC’s staff to choose paint and siding colors, fixture styles and other design elements of the home.
The home was dedicated on August 30th, with well over three dozen in attendance.
Speakers at the ceremony included Thom Mason, ORNL Director, Tom Beehan, Oak Ridge Mayor and ADFAC board member and Rick Morrow, Director of the United Way of Anderson County.
After the dedication ceremony, Carly was led into one of the bedrooms in her new home, where employees of UT-Battelle had pitched in to outfit a nursery for Carly’s baby. Complete with a crib, sheets and blankets, a changing table, hamper, clothing, diapers and baby toys, the jungle-themed room is definitely ready for its

School Supplies program serves over 1,400 students
Are YOU ready to win?
With thanks to generous support from our community, ADFAC’s School Supplies program served 1,456 students this year!
Students had the opportunity to visit the School Supply room, where they could pick the backpack of their choice and the color and style of the supplies. ADFAC uses lists provided by the school systems to ensure students receive exactly what they need for their particular school and grade.
While the need for basic school supplies is a sobering re m i n d e r o f t h e to u g h economic times faced by hundreds of local families, we are heartened by the response of the community to meet this important need.
Volunteers came from across the area to support the effort, including dozens from B&W Y-12, ORAU and Boy Scout Troop 42. Over 100 local individuals provided financial support and/or donations

of supplies, and dozens of churches, businesses and civic groups worked to make sure the youth of our area arrived at school prepared and ready to learn.
Grants from Altrusa/Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary, the Aslan Foundation, Safeco Insurance and Variety of Eastern Tennessee helped to purchase many of the new supplies which put the wonderful smiles on the faces of so many children.
A sincere thank you to all who support this program, and also to program coordinator Doris Doherty and the entire Social Services staff for working countless hours to make it all possible.
Two of the highlights of ADFAC’s 25th Anniversary Celebration on Monday, October 8th are a raffle and a live auction - both of which promise to bring the elements of surprise, luck and excitement to the event!
For several months, the 25th Anniversary Committee has been working with local businesses, clubs and individuals to put together some fantastic donated prizes for the raffle and auction. There’s something for everyone!
The prizes are still being organized, and a partial l ist is included below. For the most up-to-date information and photos of the prizes, please visit www.adfac.org/raffle.htmlTickets for the raffle are $5 each, and an order form
and envelope are included in this newsletter. Tickets can also be purchased via ADFAC’s web site and on the night of the event itself, if tickets are still available. The raffle and the auction will begin at approximately 6:30 on the night of the 25th Anniversary Celebration. For the raffle, you need not be present to win.
Because all of the prizes are donated, the raffle has the potential to raise $5,000 to directly support ADFAC’s work in the community, and the live auction can bring in even more! We hope you will try your luck to win one of these great prizes - which would not only be a win for you, but for the thousands served by ADFAC each year!
