Back to The Woods

What a wonderful opening! It’s great to be here, as the Principal of Crofton Woods

Elementary School. It is the sweetest, most loving school I know. I say, “back to The Woods” because it’s not my first time here, or even my second time here, this is my third time to be a part of Crofton Woods, so I am a Woody through and through. I came here as a special education teacher many years ago, and I have had quite a few roles since, as a 4th grade teacher, a Reading Teacher, a County Resource Teacher and National Literacy Consultant, I worked at the Maryland State Department of Education as a School Improvement Specialist and then then returned to Anne Arundel County and Crofton Woods as the Assistant Principal in 2008-2010. When I left here, I became the Principal of Severna Park Elementary, where I have been for the last 8 years. And now I’m back and ready to discover, integrate a GROW with the students and staff.

Many things have changed since I was here last. Change can be so good, but it’s always

both an adjustment and an opportunity for growth! The most notable change is the amount of physical growth we have had! Our numbers are certainly growing and at this writing we have 743 beautiful little Woodchucks here, eager to learn and grow. We have a number of new teachers added to the roster and welcome Mrs. Wright (grade 5), Mrs. Gilliand (grade 4), Ms. Hassenei (grade 2) Mrs. West (grade 2), and Ms. Hart (K) to our teaching team, we also have added some part time folks as well, Mrs. Slavic (PT Art), Mrs. Hansen (PT Music), Mrs. Fine (PT Music) and Mr. Buck (PT PE). We have 5 teachers at every grade except Kindergarten, which now has 6 classes! All this growth means that our teaching spaces have changed. We have a new portable classroom which will now hold the STEM lab and Part time Art, our special education

teachers have moved “up the hall” and we even have a second-grade class on the main

hallway and a fourth-grade class in the “media classroom”. But we hope you notice that our spaces are clean and fresh, the floors are shiny, and the classrooms are designed with student learning in mind! We’re embracing the idea of being in “The Woods” and I hope you’ll come through the front lobby when you come, and see all the woodsy changes there. The PTA has already spruced up the front and really made this place look amazing. These changes are designed to ensure that our school reflects the vibrant, sweet learning community that is Crofton Woods Elementary School. I am so excited to get to know you and your families, and to GROW with you and your children this year. Whether you have had kids here before, or maybe you even came here as a child, or perhaps you are completely new to the school community, either way we say, “Welcome Home!”

Noteworthy

Video camera system

Crofton Woods Elementary School is equipped with a video camera system. It covers selected interior and exterior public portions of the building and grounds. It is NOT monitored constantly, but it is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or security of students may be in question, authorized personnel from local, state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given access to view images projected on the camera system. If you have any questions about the system, you should call the Supervisor of School Security at 410-222-5083.
