Finishing the Task Serving Today and Tomorrow

Have you noticed something different in the Gathering Area? What’s different is a new Capital Campaign display that features the current figure remaining to pay off the mortgage. The display highlights the Capital Campaign’s three themes – Rooted in Faith – Building to Serve (building construction phase) and Built to Serve- A Foundation of Faith and Finishing the Task- Serving Today and Tomorrow ( 10 year mortgage phase). Look closely at the Finishing the Task portion of the display. It’s actually a puzzle with a piece removed for each $5,000 reduction of the mortgage. Due to your regular contributions the total amount received for 2015 through Sunday, April 17, 2016 totals $115,070.61 ($57,757.00 – Pledged and $57,313.61 – Give as Able). Thank you! Due to the congregation’s concerted effort, Finance Committee recommended and the Congregational Council approved at its December meeting an additional payment of $30,000 be applied toward the mortgage principal. In January 2012, the mortgage amount stood at $412,000. Since January 2012, the mortgage has been reduced to $74,538 (as of April 17). What a difference your regular commitment, regardless of the amount, has made to Holy Trinity’s Capital Campaign. Thank you!

We have now paid off 82% of the original 10-year

DO WE HAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS?

Continuing with the this issue of the newsletter, we have emailed it to all members whose email addresses we currently have. This will save considerable paper, printing and postage costs.

Since you are receiving a “hard copy”, it means that we do not have your email address. If you have an email address, please submit it to the church office so we can add you to the list of those receiving the newsletter by email. If you have access to the internet, you can also read the newsletter on Holy Trinity’s website.

YEAR ROUND STEWARDSHIP We begin a new church year challenging you to consider Christian Stewardship from an entirely new perspective. Rather than seeing stewardship as purely a “fund-raising” effort conducted each Fall, we hope to reframe and redefine stewardship as embracing how you live every day with God as your center. What does it mean to have God at the very center of your life for all the choices and decisions you make? What does it say about how you manage both your health as well as about how you share your offerings? What does it say about your diet, about how you vote, about how you help your neighbors, about the chemicals you put on the lawn, and the choice of car you purchase? Stewardship embraces all the choices we make and all the values we embrace in life, as stewards of God’s creation. Over the course of the coming year, we will challenge you to consider your life in various ways from a faith perspective. Our hope is to expand the voice that faith has in your living. The Stewardship Committee

Women’s Prayer Group The Women’s Prayer group will resume in September.

I would like to thank Pastor and Donna for their visits, while I was both in the hospital and at home. I am also very thankful for the altar flowers, cards, prayers and get-well thoughts I received. My new knee and I are becoming better acquainted with each passing day. Again, thank you all. Bob Snader Dear Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Thank you for your gift of $649.18 to Water Street Mission. Because of your gift, our ministry is able to serve the homeless and hungry each day. You are helping restore lives through rescue and renewal. Would you like to see the transforming impact of your gift? Please come for a tour of Water Street Mission. You can also find stories of lives renewed on our website at www.wsm.org. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Jack Crowley, President of Water Street Mission I would like to thank my church family at Holy Trinity for your prayers, cards, calls and concerns since my stay in the hospital. Thanks to Pastor Herbener for coming to the hospital; unfortunately I was having some tests done so I didn’t get to see you but you did see and talk to Terry. I am doing good but full recovery could take a few months. I’m faithfully taking my new

meds and with the Grace of God, I should make a complete recovery. Joyce Gehman Dear Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Thank you for your recent gift of $1,015 to support the ELCA Good Gifts program. Your passion

for the good works that the ELCA does through ELCA Good Gifts enables us to share the gospel and continue doing God’s work of restoring and reconciling communities. Thank you for your commitment in working towards a world in which all are fed. Together, as the ELCA, we do more than we ever could alone. Because of your partnership and generous support, we are

truly transforming lives. Robin Brown Congregational Support ELCA World Hunger

If you would like to have a thank you printed in an upcoming issue of The Window, please bring or send it to the church office or put it in the offering plate. Please clearly mark that you would like it to be printed in The Window. Thank you.

THE WINDOW, Newsletter of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Ephrata, PA June 2016

Although the weather has been wet and overcast for weeks, seeming to be more like late March than late May, I have it on good authority that Summer is not far away. In fact, as I write this letter, the weather forecast for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday is warm and humid. Oh boy, we will jump from cool and damp right into hot and sticky with no transition! Summer is soon to appear! The school year will soon conclude, and the mad dash to a Summer lifestyle will commence. None of this, of course, should mean that your faith life ends for the next three months! Summer is indeed a gift from God in so many ways. It is the growing season when vegetables and crops blossom, grow and produce a harvest that will feed many. Summer is also a time for escape, and we all need that escape from the routine that has dominated the rest of the year. This time of escape does not mean, though, that your faith should disappear. Your responsibilities as a child of God go on as much in June-August as in any other time of the year. God calls us to worship regularly, and so I hope that you do worship this Summer, If not on Sunday, then on Thursday evening. The choir loft should be full each Thursday evening. The work of God’s kingdom does not take the summer off, and there will be numerous opportunities for you to live out your faith in works of service, work that can make a real difference in the lives of others. In June alone, there will be any number of programs to support. On June 3, prior to the gathering of the synod assembly at Messiah College, hundreds of volunteers will gather to package 400,000 meals that will be distributed through the Central Penn Food Bank to people in the local area. We will work in 2 hour shifts to accomplish this lofty goal. To date, twelve members of Trinity have volunteered to help on June 3. Our Special Stewardship Focus for June will be the local shelter for women and children, the Good Samaritan Shelter here in Ephrata. Also, throughout June, we will continue to gather peanut butter, tuna, and chicken ( large cans for each) for the Power Packs Program that provides weekend meals for the families whose children receive subsidized lunches at school. The annual Relay for Life event,, supporting the American Cancer Society, will be held at the Cocalico football/track stadium on June 17-18. Once again, we will gather food items for the EASS food pantry which

typically experiences a greater demand when school is not in session. On June 9, Holy Trinity will serve the Community Meal held at the church. Actually, Trinity will be the host site for the meals on each Thursday in June. These are but some of the opportunities to share in the work of God’s kingdom in the month of June. Behind all of these June activities, will be the ongoing preparations for the July 17-21 Vacation Bible School event. The preparation work for VBS is a long term project that began in April. People have been coming each Tuesday evening to paint and to prepare the “set designs” that will be used for the nights of VBS. This work will continue until all is ready for the first child to enter the sanctuary on the night of July 17. While this prep work continues, Donna is also soliciting volunteers to serve as crew leaders and others who will shepherd the children through the various parts of the program each night. For this, she will need the help of many of you. Please volunteer! So you see, school may be out for the summer, and you may all be heading to various vacation/weekend destinations, but the work of the kingdom of God goes on each day. I wish for you God’s blessing and safe journey as you travel from the area, but I also remind you to worship and to serve. Faith is not a seasonal thing. It is what and how you live each day, with every breath you take. So be faithful this Summer. Worship as you are able and often. Remember the needs of those around who are less fortunate or in crisis. Join in the various programs to help others. Pray daily, and remember that God’s presence goes with you into all your travels. Be safe, have fun, live out your faith! In Christ, Pr. Herbener

Do you like to knit and/or crochet? A new ministry has begun here at Trinity-the making of prayer shawls. If you are interested in joining this group please call Marti Nissley (859-2847) or Kathy Kuhns (610-410-5410). They will send you patterns and dimensions. Soft yarn is suggested. Lap blankets may also be made. When a shawl or lap blanket is completed prayers for its recipient are said and it is presented to someone as a physical symbol of our care and prayers. Those who receive our prayer shawls are literally wrapped in our prayers and feel God’s presence and the community of His people in a most special way.

Meals on Wheels Meals on Wheels needs volunteer packers, every Thursday and the 2nd and 3rd Fridays of each month, from 8:30– 10:30. Please call 733-4846 between 8:30 & 11:00. Thank you!
