Unitarity remains an initial theoretical assumption inherent in the majority of analyses, and is the basis for the validity of the 3 paradigm.
However, in comparison with the quark sector, experimental tests of unitarity for the 3x3 neutrino mixing matrix are considerably weaker.

Where does this non-unitarity come from?
9
Without symmetry to dictate a scale masses, a priori, no mass scale prefered over another.
Canonical way of generating a non-unitary mixing matrix is to embed our 3x3 matrix in an extended mixing matrix, via the addition of SM singlets.

Non-Unitarity Oscillation Probability
15
This term not necessarily 0 or 1 in appearance and disappearance experiments respectively.
L and E independant. “Zero-distance” or “Instantaneous ” oscillation probability
Can re-parametrize all observed three neutrino amplitudes to non-unitary oscillation probability and refit to global data

Non-unitarity does not modify frequency, fix to global best fit values
If amplitude observed, experiment cannot tell if unitary or non-unitary

Effects of non-unitarity at Short Baselines
23
No longer measuring 3x3 matrix, using inferred information!
Not model independent, depends on assumptions on new physics interactions
Only valid in 3+N interpretation
Use non-measurement of these....to bound violations
of unitarity here
Measure precisely the mixing elements to check unitarity conditions Ignore
Direct observation of PMNS elements
Do not care about what causes non-unitarity.
Very model independent.

Unitarity Triangle Closures
27
Only e triangle is known to be unitary at ~1% level.
Due to strong - e appearance and (e) disappearance bounds
All remaining triangles contain at least one -element. Non-unitarity constrained an order of
magnitude worse than e triangle.
Strikingly, two distinct groups immediately jump out.
NuFact 2016 Mark Ross-Lonergan 25th Aug 2016
Neutrino Normalisations
28
All remaining normalisations contain at least one -element. Unitarity constraints an order of magnitude worse than e and .
normalisation allows 30% violations at 2Only e and normalisations are known to
be unitary within ~ 7% at 3 level.
Again, two distinct groups immediately jump out.

Conclusions
Current experimental bounds on unitarity within the 3 paradigm allows for considerable violation, and without the unitarity assumption, the precision on the individual UPMNS elements can vary significantly (up to 104% in the case of |U 3|).
However we find no evidence for non-unitarity.
Only 1 triangle-closure (and 2 normalisations) are constrained to be unitary to within the percent (10 percent) level with the remaining at least an order of magnitude worse.
Prospects of directly measuring the 12 unitarity conditions with high precision is poor, as even vast improvements on and e normalisations and e triangle are still constraining the same elements.
There is much room for new physics, especially in the sector where currently almost all information is derived from the unitarity assumption and not direct measurements
