The event was well attended and attracted a host of role players in the tourism industry, members of the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association (MPTA), nominees, city councillors and those with a vested interest in the advancement of tourism in the city. The awards were introduced to identify and recognise men, wom- en and organisations who have strived, and continue to make, the City of Choice a destination of choice. The call for nominations was made in May 2013 and nominees in each category had to accept nominations and motivate as to why they should be considered for an award. Each category of awards was judged by a panel of judges: Prof Rob Fincham (director – Msundu- zi Innovation and Development Institute), Stanton Goodenough (managing director – Destinations Travel Group), Bunny Bhoola (managing director – African Link Tours), Brian Zuma (manager: marketing and communications at the Msunduzi Municipality) and Des Morgan (chairman – Mid- lands M&B Association). JOURNEY TO RETIRING THE RIGHT WAY

L I F E | F U N E R A L | E D U C AT I O N | R E T I R E M E N T | H E A LT H | I N V E S T M E N T S

Metropolitan, a division of MMI Group Limited, an authorised financial services provider.

South Africans are living, on average, seven years longer. This means that you will have to stretch your retirementsavings even further or delay your retirement. Wilfred Moyo,Investment & Economic Strategist at Metropolitan explains thesteps to ensure a comfortable retirement.

1. Set your retirement goalBefore you start your journey, you can estimate how muchmoney you will need to save for retirement to maintain yourcurrent standard of living. A pension equal to 60% to 75% ofthe salary you are earning in the year before you retire willbe enough. For example, if your income before you retired isR10 000, a pension of R7 000 should be enough to maintainyour lifestyle.

2. Find the best retirement savings optionYou can save for retirement in a retirement annuity(RA), pension or preservation fund, savings plan or bankaccount.A retirement annuity is designed for retirementsavingsandyougettaxbreaksaswell. Youcansaveasetamountevery month into your RA to build up a retirement fund. You canalso save a large single amount of money into your RA (i.e. youcan save R300 every month or R1 000 every three months).

3. Check your savings regularly against your retirement goalRetirement is a long-term saving goal. You need to check the retirement fund value against yourretirement goal. A qualified financial adviser can assist you by using the right financial tools. Ifyou are not savings enough to meet your target, you may have to increase your contribution toyour retirement fund. You can start by revising your monthly budget to cut down on unnecessaryspending. For example, eat less takeout food and prepare home-cooked meals.

4. Don’t be tempted to cash in your fund before retirementIt can be very tempting to dip into your retirement fund to help pay off debt now. If you areretrenched or resign from your job, move your retirement money to a preservation fund oranother retirement product. If you cash out your retirement fund and spend the money, you will have to save twice as much to make up for it.

5. Know your options when you retireAs you get closer to retirement, you need to start considering the details of the annuitythat you will purchase. An annuity is a policy where you will invest your retirement fund tosecure a regular pension.

At retirement, you will be faced with a number of annuity options, for example a livingannuity, joint life annuity, etc. This is a critical stage in your retirement journey. Yourfinancial adviser can explain each type of annuity along with the advantages anddisadvantages of each.

This important decision means the difference between making your retirement money lastand running out of money midway through retirement.

6. Shop around for competitive annuity ratesWhen choosing an annuity, compare the annuity rates offered by the various insurancecompanies. The annuity rate is the rate of interest used to determine your monthly annuityamount. The higher the annuity rate, the more pension you’ll receive. Try to aim for thecompany that offers the best annuity rates.

Your financial partner before and at retirementWe can help with one of the biggest financial decisions that will impact the rest of your life.Contact the Pietermaritzburg branch on (033) 345 7301 or visit us at 291 Pietermaritz Street,Pietermaritzburg.

A JIKA Joe oasis for childrenwho reside at the informal set-tlement will soon get a R250

000 facelift from the Msunduzi Mu-nicipality.

Recently, theExecutiveCommittee(Exco)agreed that the TathamSportsPavilion, a condemned buildingwhich is being used as a crèche andday care, will be renovated to benefitthe children.

Msunduzi Municipality’s deputymunicipalmanager for economic de-velopment, RayNgcobo, said that themunicipality saw a need to act as thesituation was disastrous.

In itsprime, theTathamsportspa-vilionusedtohavetwochangerooms,two shower rooms with toilets, onecommunal room and a kitchenette.Today, the toiletsandshowersareoutof order, all change rooms are dys-functional, doors are damaged, win-dow panes are broken, the plumbingsystemisisolatedandthepavilionhasrotten timber floor boards.

The complex nowmanages about

43 children during the day. In the af-ternoon, neighbouring schools usethe femalechangeroomand toilet ar-ea for study purposes.

From infants to six–year–olds, allchildren are congested in one room.

The crèche is currently run bythreeJikaJoe femalevolunteers.Oneof them,NtombiLuthuli, said thatsheis happy that the building will finallyreceive much needed attention.

“We started using this building asacrèchewhenMikeTarrwasstill act-ing as themayor ofMsunduzi. Beforethat, I used to care for the children atmy own house because we had nopremises. At the time, the Tathamsportspavilionwasahomeandadrughaven for thugs. We have used thisbuilding forabout18yearsand thugsurinated and excreted on the outsidestaircases that lead to the upper floorof the building. The residue wouldslither down thewalls andwe had tocomeinthemorningandcleanevery-thing. We could not let the children’shealth be affected. We used to live infear because we thought the thugswould enter the crèche and abuse lit-tle children.Wewouldbehappy ifan-

yone could provide uswith fencing toprotect our premises,” said Luthuli.

Between taking care of her ownchildren and running the crèche,Luthuli made time to skill herself upon daycare and pre–school training.

“Children are at the core ofmybe-ing. I have done everything to makesurethattheyarewellprotected.Ihadtostartthecrèchebecausetherewerechildren as young as five who wouldenjoy pretending that they weredrinking or smoking. That was notright. The children imitated every-thing they saw in their communityand my role was to make sure thatthey are removed from those experi-ences; hence the crèche is furthestfrom other shacks. It also breaks myheart to see young children digginginside garbage bags to find food.Whatever little money we receivefrom parents, we try and feed all thechildren. Any helpwould be appreci-ated,” said Luthuli.

THE Pietermaritzburg airport iscurrently receiving a facelift thatwill enable it to handle biggerplanes and give it internationalstatus in the future.

The first step in the facelift is toprepare the runway to accommo-date bigger airplanes.

Thesatelliteambulancebaseatthe airport will have a dedicatedambulance and paramedic serv-ice available around the clock.

Thiswillensurethattheairportis able to deal with unforeseenemergencies which are linked tothe operation of the airport.

Addressing the ExecutiveCommittee (Exco), MsunduziMayor Chris Ndlela said that theserviceswillnotonlyassisttheair-port,butwillalsohelpthecommu-nity at large including suburbssuch as Bisley, Scottsville, West-gate, Grange, Pelham and OribiVillage, with a quicker responsetime in an emergency.

The costs of water, electricityand sanitation will be paid by theKZN Department of Health.

Democratic Alliance (DA) cau-

cus leader, Bill Lambert, urgedcouncil toensure that theKZNDe-partment of Health pays for itsmunicipal services because “gov-ernment departments are badpayers.”

Deputymunicipalmanager foreconomic development, Dr RayNgcobo, notedthat inorderfortherunway to accommodate biggerflights from places like CapeTown; there will have to be typo-graphical changes made becausethe current typography of Pieter-maritzburg is hollow.

Construction at the airportstartedthisyearandisexpectedtobe finished in October.

Msunduzi PietermaritzburgTourism Association (MPTA) di-rector Dumisani Mhlongo saidthat it is vital forPietermaritzburgto have a bigger airport for thegrowth of the local economy.

“There are many people whoare coming into Pietermaritzburgfor business and tourism purpos-es. Should there be challengeswith fully booked flights, thosepeople will be discouraged fromvisiting Pietermaritzburg. Theeconomyofthecityreliesontrans-portandairportsare the lifebloodof the economy. A bigger airportmeans a bigger volume of peoplevisiting the city,” said Mhlongo.

THE concept of parental authority has been replaced with the concept of Parental rights andResponsibilities. This is addressed in Section 18

of the Children’s Act 35 of 2005.The terms “custody” and “access” have been re

placed with “care” and “contact”A parent may have specific or full parental rights

and responsibilities. In terms of the Children’s Act,both parents have full capacity to care for their children.

This has done away with the notation that oneparent should have full/sole custody.The parental responsibilities and rights that a personmay have in respect of a child include the responsibility and the right:a) to care for the child;b) to maintain contact with the child;c) to act as guardian of the child; andd) to contribute to the maintenance of the child.A parent or other person who acts as guardian of achild must:a) administer and safeguard the child’s property andproperty interests;b) assist or represent the child in administrative, contractual and other legal matters; orc) giveorrefuseanyconsentrequiredbylawinrespectof the child, including –i) consent to the child’s marriage;ii) consent to the child’s adoption;

iii) consent to the child’s departure or removal fromthe Republic;iv) consent to the child’s application for a passport;andv) consent to the alienation or encumbrance of anyimmovable property of the child.

In terms of Section 19 of the Act, the biologicalmother of a child, whether married or unmarried, hasfull parental responsibilities and rights in respect ofthe child.

The biological father of a child has full parentalresponsibilities and rights in respect of the child if heis married to the child’s mother, or if he was marriedto the child’s mother at the time of the child’s conception or the time of the child’s birth, or any time between the child’s conception and birth.

This is in terms of Section 20 of the Act.Should you require any assistance, please contact

COMPUTER WORLDCHOOSINGstorageforyourcomputerusedtobeadecisionbasedpurelyon space demands. This is not the case anymore. There are now threetypes of drives readily available to cater for your pc needs. The first isthe Hard Disk Drive (HDD). The HDD has been around for a very longtime, andupuntila fewyearsago, itwas theonlymeansofhighcapacitystorage on a computer. TheHDD is notwithout flaws though. AlthoughthestoragecapacityonaHDDishigh, thedevice itself hasmovingpartsinside it that allow no room for bumps and shock etc. Also, due to thedesign of the drive, the read/write speed is limited to RPM of the disksinsidewhichmakes it very slow. The second drivewe can look at is theSolidStateDrive (SSD).Solid statedrivesaremadeupofFlashMemory.Flashmemory is significantly faster thanyourHDDmemoryand there-forethedriveperformsmuchfaster.ThedrawbacktoSSD’saretheheftyprice tag that they carry with them, as well as the size limitations. Onaverage, a 128GB SSD (of decent quality) will cost the same as a 2TBHDD (2000GB). The third drive is what we call a Hybrid Hard Drive(HHD). The HHD is literally as its name suggests, a hybrid device thatcombinesanHDDandaSSD.IthasthesamemovingplattersasanormalHDDdoes, butalsocomeswithasmall slabofFlashMemory that it usesto cache the most frequented sectors of the HDD. It provides you withthe storage capacity of the HDD and very near speeds of the SSD.
