Dr. Trevor Williams presented apaper entitled "Abilities, Environ.ments, and Attainments" at the recentAmerican Sociological Associationmeetings in New York, Dr. Williamsnow holds a joint appointment withthe Institute for Research in HumanAbilities.

Dr. John Mannion, Departmentof Geography, has been awarded a$5,570.00 research grant from theCanada Council to continue workbegun this summer on two relatedtopics: Mercantile Control and theEvolution of a Central Place: Placentiafrom 1660 and Mercantile Control andthe Irish Migrations to Newfoundland.1750·1850.

During the past summer, withthe aid of a research assistant, Or,Mannion collected Oller 6,000 indi­vidual surnames of Newfoundlandimmigrants giving homeland addressesin southeast Ireland. These figures willprovide a basis for a detailed examina·tion of the homeland with reference tothe social and economic conditions,and particularly the role of the mer·chants, influencing the migrations. Or.Mannion will spend five months (Jan·uary - June 1974) doing archivalresearch in Dublin and field work inthe southeast He will complete thePlacentia project next summer.

His paper, "TheApplication of Systems Analysis Tech·niques to the Study of Isolated Mam­malian Heart Muscle" will describe theresults of his research on heart musclecarried out in the Department ofPhysiology at University College, Lon·don, England, While in Minnesota, Dr.Toll will also visit the world famousMayo Clinic where he will discuss hiswork with leading experts in the fieldof cardiac muscle physiology, Or. Toll,an Engineering graduate from the Uni·versity of Western Ontario, is workingin close co-operation with the Facultyof Medicine to establish a joint pro­gramme in Bio·Medical Engineering atM,U.N,

the area of comparative and cross·cultural studies of student attitudes,and he is the president of the AtlanticAssociation of Teacher Educators. Mr.Mustard is currently working on ananalysis of the concept of reason incontemporary philosophy of educa­tion. His general interests focus on therole of education in various social andpolitical philosophies.

GARDEN CLUB

A new special interest group has beenestablished in the Women's Association ofM.U.N. in association with the Newfound_land Horticultural Society. The Society,which meets the second tuesday in eachmonth, is oriented towards homl!(lwners andtheir gardening needs, bringing togetherbeginners and those already knowledgeableabout gardening. It is hoped that throughW.A.M.U.N. more families who are inter­ested in gardening may become actiw memobers of the Society.
