Title: New Bandon Pastoral Charge fonds
Dates: 1884-1994; 1996; 1999-2001; 2003-2015
Extent: 1 metre of textual records and 4 microfilms
Administrative History: A pastoral charge is a grouping of churches termed "preaching points"
-- each with separate names and governing boards or sessions. These churches are served by one
minister. The pastoral charge title usually reflects the breadth of the geographic area
encompassing the charge.
The New Bandon Pastoral Charge consists of the preaching point of Central United Church
which is located in Clifton, New Brunswick.
When the Presbyterian, Methodist, and Congregational churches united to form The United
Church of Canada in 1925, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches in the New Bandon area
became part of the newly formed denomination. In 1925, the New Bandon Pastoral Charge
consisted of the preaching points of New Bandon, Stonehaven (St. Matthew’s), Janeville (St.
Andrew’s), Salmon Beach (St. James), Canobie (Trinity), and Caraquet. Bass River was added as
a preaching point in 1942. It was last listed as being a preaching point of the New Bandon
Pastoral Charge in 1952.
Caraquet became part of the Miscou Pastoral Charge in 1961.
In 1976, the congregations of New Bandon, Salmon Beach, Janeville, Canobie, and Stonehaven
amalgamated to form Central United Church.

incomplete.

Title: New Bandon Presbyterian Pastoral Charge records
Dates: 1884-1926
Extent: 5.5 cm of textual records
Administrative History: The first church in the area is was a Presbyterian church believed to
have been built in New Bandon sometime in the 1830s. It was decided that instead of having two
separate preaching points in Clifton and New Bandon, a new church would be built in
Stonehaven, which was a central location between the two communities. Work on the new
church building began in 1884 and St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church was finished in 1889. A
church was built in Janeville just a year later.
In 1925, St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church in Stonehaven and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian
Church in Janeville became part of The United Church of Canada.

Title: New Bandon Methodist Circuit records
Dates: 1918-1925
Extent: 1.5 cm of textual records
Administrative History: Rev. Michael Pickles preached his first sermon in Bathurst in August
1830. Other Methodist ministers also made subsequent visits to the area and in 1832 Joseph F. Bent
was appointed to minister to the area extending to Dalhousie and Campbellton. In 1838, Bathurst
and New Bandon Methodist Circuit contained the appointments of Bathurst, Salmon Beach, New
Bandon, and “the Capes.”
In 1845, the Bathurst and New Bandon circuit was expanded considerably. The area served not
only included Bathurst, Salmon Beach, New Bandon, and Tetagouche, but also Jacquet River,
Eel River Dalhousie, Campellton, and Upsalquitch. The circuit, however, after 1853, was
confined to the immediate area of Bathurst including Salmon Beach, New Bandon, and
Tetagouche.
Trinity Methodist Church in Bathurst was built in 1832 on Murray Avenue. It was replaced by a
new church on the same property in 1875. This building was replaced a few years later and a
new church building was dedicated on January 19, 1879. The old building was dismantled in
1882. A parsonage was built in 1911 and the church was remodeled and enlarged in 1917.
Tetagouche was added to the circuit around 1841 and a church building was dedicated on August
22, 1866. The church built at New Bandon was dedicated on April 5, 1885. Salmon Beach
followed suit with a building being dedicated on June 4, 1911.
In 1925, the Methodist churches in the area became part of The United Church of Canada.
Scope and Content: Sous-fonds consists of a membership roll from New Bandon Methodist
Church.
