From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove Family,

As we move into the final two weeks of the 2011 academic year, it’s important to acknowledge the efforts of all and finish the year well. At the All Souls Day Mass on 2 November there were many of our families who have experienced the grief of the loss of a loved one in the last twelve months. Sometimes our own problems seem to be significant. Then you spend time with or hear stories about people who have really experienced challenges in their lives and you feel uplifted because of their attitude. Sometimes we just need to get out and into the fresh air. My mother always used to tell me, “Your health is your wealth.” We are indeed fortunate to live in a country like Australia where the outdoors and exercise present us all with so many opportunities.

I remember being in France two years ago and I visited many of the places where St Marcellin walked. He walked everywhere and loved hard work, both the spiritual and physical kind.

I’d like to share with you a story written by Miles Yohnke about Changing Your Darkness into Light.

Last week I saw Allan. A person I went to high school with. Allan has severe Cerebral Palsy. He is disabled and in a wheelchair. Thankfully his mind is sharp. He had so much trouble getting around from class to class. Our school was very old. It had many floors and so many stairs.

It had been about thirty years since I saw him last. Nothing had changed. He was still the same. Still as clear as then with that same big vibrant smile on his face. It seemed somewhat fitting as he was being lifted into a vehicle when I saw him.

When I’m on the highway cycling or other sports I perform, I think of people like Allan and how lucky we are to have our health. We have to use our bodies. They will fail when we don’t use them, when we eat improperly. Exercise improves your mood. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed than you were before you worked out. You’ll also look better and feel better when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. Regular physical activity can even help prevent depression. Exercise combats chronic diseases. Regular physical activity can help you prevent or manage high blood pressure and lower the build-up of plaque in your arteries.

And there’s more. Regular physical activity can help you prevent type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer. It is stated that when one exercises there is a sixty percent decrease in getting breast cancer. Why wouldn’t one exercise? I just hate seeing people cheat themselves of it.

God creates this beautiful body full of muscle and detail and one doesn’t use it. What a sin! It goes hand in hand. People aren’t happy in their lives, yet they really do nothing to correct this. They dwell in their own dysfunction. They think they should, that they should do something more with their life. Well, when does this happen? When does this occur? We make that decision. We get just this one life. If waiting for it to happen, then one is in for a long, dark wait.

Unlike Allan we can exercise in many ways in which he may be limited. We should never take that for granted. Today is that day, that flash of light.

Every day, thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of asthma and eczema and families struggle with illness management and children’s behavioural and emotional adjustment.

Positive Parenting for Healthy Livingis an adaptation of the successful Triple P- Positive Parenting Program offering practical ideas and support for parents of children suffering asthma or eczema. This innovative group program is designed to help parents manage their child’s illness, assist children in coping with their illness and emotions, and prevent and manage difficult child behaviour.

Over the next few months and for a limited time only, parents of 3-10 year old children suffering asthma or eczema are able to access Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Triple P as part of a University of Queensland research project. Parents will be able to attend the program free of charge, and will be asked to complete 3 sets of assessment measures (questionnaire, symptom diary, and family observation) over a 6 month period, as part of the study. MoRe SuPPoRT neeDeD FoR STuDenTS WITh DISAbIlITy

Catholic schools at all times seek to respect and nurture the God-given human dignity of all their students.

Students with a disability are warmly welcomed into Catholic school communities, where all possible resources are directed towards helping young people reach their full potential.

The number of students with disability in Australian Catholic schools is on the increase. Teachers and staff work tirelessly with students and their families with the resources available, but could do more given the resources and opportunity.

The Federal Government is conducting a sweeping review of funding government and non-government schools, including Catholic schools.

The National Catholic Education Commission has made a submission to the review calling for additional support for those who need a little extra help to get the best from their education. For more information visit www.fundinginfo.catholic.edu.au.

Its submission calls for Government funding support for students with a disability to reflect individual needs, allowing for individually tailored resources and specialist care, getting the very best education possible.

Funding support for students with disability should be based on educational need, irrespective of the school they attend.

The Government’s current full-scale review of funding for all the nation’s schools needs to come up with a fairer model for funding students with disability in Catholic schools.

oval upGradeSThe College has embarked on a program of upgrading the sporting ovals to be undertaken over the next three years which aims to improve the quality of sports fields through increased levels of turf growth and ability to absorb the ever increasing levels of demand for use. These works are implemented alongside long-term strategies to improve sports grounds including increased use of recycled water for irrigation where possible and an extensive fertiliser and top dressing program. The scope of works for the ovals is: MCMAhon ovAl • Address the weed problem by implementing a herbicide eradication program. Increased weeds have been caused by previous drought conditions, poor plant health, large seed bank build up and excessive amounts of rainfall in the summer months.• The herbicide program will make the oval seem patchy and brown but we have to start somewhere. We have a goal of a 60% reduction in weeds in the first growing season and in future years thereafter.• For the future we will be implementing basic turf health practices to encourage healthier, safer and aesthetically pleasing playing surfaces all the while reducing the dependency on resources. The implementation will involve-

1. Fertiliser program2. Regular aeration and renovation practices3. Weed pre and post emergent program4. Re turfing of any bad patches5. Re- levelling program by top dressing6. Wetting agent applications during dry times of the year

MATT hAyDen ovAl • This oval has recently been turfed. For the future we will be implementing basic turf health practices to encourage healthier, safer and aesthetically pleasing playing surfaces all the while reducing the dependency on resources. As with McMahon Oval, the implementation will involve-

1. Fertiliser program2. Regular aeration and renovation practices3. Weed Pre and Post Emergent program4. Re turfing of any bad patches5. Re levelling program by top dressing6. Wetting agent applications during dry times of the year

CAMeRon ovAl• The main concerns with Cameron Oval include the oval being unsafe due to soil movements creating an uneven surface, insufficient drainage, inefficient irrigation, excessive weed problem and increased shade at the northern end of field• The oval will be renovated by Twin View Turf under the direction of the College grounds staff. The renovation will include:

1. Selective tree pruning to allow more sunlight at northern end2. Herbicide application to eradicate grass3. Ripping and rotary hoeing of site4. Installation of new wicket block5. Levelling of sub base6. New irrigation system installed7. Drainage system installed8. Sand and top soil blend added to top of sub base9. Wintergreen turf laid

RoTARy helPS SAnTA vISIT The gAP AnD AShgRove – 3 To 11 DeCeMbeRThis year the Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap will escort Santa and his sleigh through the streets of The Gap and Ashgrove over a nine-night period from Saturday 3rd to Sunday 11th December.

Families are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new routes and plan street parties for the night that Santa is in their area by visiting the club Web site (see below), or consulting the maps in the November edition of the Western Echo.

You can let Rotary know about your street party through the Website.

The President of Ashgrove/The Gap Rotary Club, Theresa Spencer, said the Santa Sleigh was a major club project involving between 15 and 20 volunteers each night.

“Many parents arrange street parties to coincide with Santa’s visit and give their children the opportunity to personally deliver their Christmas wishes to Santa,” she said.

“The Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap has organised the Santa Sleigh since 1996 and has introduced the new routes to keep that tradition alive.

“Monies raised are dedicated to local community projects and charities,” Theresa said.

“Community support makes the sleigh possible. Eagers Kia supplies the towing vehicle,, while members of St Johns Wood and The Gap Rover crews and other local supporters help Santa on his run.

“Santa’s Sleigh is a lot of fun for all concerned, especially when the community joins in and provides such generous support to raise some very useful funds for community projects,” Theresa said.

Routes this year will differ from previous years, and are shown in November’s edition of the Western Echo and on the club’s website at http://www.rotaryashgrovethegap.org.au/ then click on <Santa Sleigh>.

Readers of “The Catholic Leader” would be very familiar with the fortnightly articles written by Br John Venard who lives at the College. Another of his books is soon to be launched. “The Best of a Battler’s God” is Br John’s sixth book and a compilation of his earlier works which received such wide acclaim. Inspired by the knowledge that “God works in wondrous ways”, Br John has much pleasure in presenting this, his final book, and hopes you all enjoy reading it.

FuN MuNAn InITIATIve oF un youTh QlD

Over the weekend of the 8th and 9th of October, James Rigby (Year 12), Minh Pham and Sam Bentley (Year 11) and Seamus Coulson (Year 9), took part in Fun MUN, a Model United Nations event hosted by UN Youth Queensland. The event was a relaxed way of educating and inspiring the participants to engage with issues of international importance, while gaining an understanding of different viewpoints held by the countries of the world. Despite the common image of a Model UN Forum, Fun MUN certainly lived up to its name, providing entertainment for all involved. Can you imagine countries such as the land-locked Bolivia discussing International Piracy while Pakistan repeatedly advocated the use of nuclear weapons to solve the world's problems.

Overall the experience was very enjoyable for all participants. Particular thanks must go to Minh Pham, who brought Model UN to life at Marist, and the coordinators Chris Spensley and Majella Stevens. Finally thanks also to UN Youth Queensland, who prepared the event.

MelbouRne CuP lunCh75 ladies had a very enjoyable day at the College Melbourne Cup Lunch held in the Cyprian Pavilion on that ‘one day in November’.

On such a beautiful day the College String Quartet and Jazz Band entertained us on the balcony. Guests enjoyed their welcome drink and beautiful appetizers organised by Mr Gary Keown and the Hospitality students.

A pre-lunch Fashion Parade by Yesterday’s of Paddington displayed some wonderful fashions at the right price!

Headmaster, Peter McLoughlin, welcomed everyone to the lunch, said Grace and judged the best hat/fascinator.

What would a Melbourne Cup Day be without sweeps and raffles and these were very strongly supported, for which we thank everyone.

Following a beautiful buffet lunch catered by the Services staff at the College, guests prepared themselves for the race that stops the nation and all too quickly it was over!

gRAnDPARenTS’ DAyAnother very successful Grandparents’ Day was held at the College on Friday 4 November 2011.More than 650 grandparents were entertained by the musical talents of students at the College.

Congratulations and thanks to Andrew Butt, the Music Department and the students who entertained the grandparents; volunteer mums and College Services staff who helped prepare the morning tea and to the students who helped with parking and serving of morning tea.

From the Deputy Head of School - Teaching and LearninggAP MeDICSGap Medics are offering an exciting project for your students wishing to apply for university courses in either medicine, nursing, dentistry or midwifery. We are running a special 2-week programme in Tanzania for Australian students during the January holidays and a 2-week placement in Thailand during the April end of Term holidays. The placements are designed for your Year 11 students thinking of applying for a healthcare related degree to offer them much needed hospital work experience before they apply and to see if a career in healthcare appeals to them. It is also open to your Year 12 students who will be looking to apply for healthcare related university courses.

Gap Medics are the leading provider of short-term healthcare work experience placements abroad. We are based in the UK and our programmes are open to all students from around the world.

During weekdays, students will shadow highly skilled doctors in their day-to-day work on a fully-supervised hospital placement. Students will also have the benefit of clinical teaching, safe and secure accommodation in our own students’ house, food, transfers in Tanzania or Thailand, local orientations, 24/7 support from our teams overseas and in the UK and lots of help with preparations for their trip too.

MARIST College ST vInCenT De PAul ChRISTMAS hAMPeR APPeAl Christmas is upon us again and the College St Vincent De Paul Conference has been collecting items to contribute to the Christmas Hamper Appeal. We would like to thank those students and parents who have already contributed to this worthwhile cause.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul, as you would well know, supports thousands families in need, across the state and there is no more important time than Christmas when some families struggle to put food on the table. FRoM The College ChAPlAInOn Wednesday the Year 9 CSYMA (R81) class had the opportunity of visitng Our Lady's College in Annerley for a Caritas Leadership Day. Jennifer Byrne, who has visited Marist a number of times presented an interesting and challenging program to the students of 9 different schools in the Brisbane area.

The purpose of the program was to give the girls and boys an insight into the leadership qualities of young people from around the world and the impact that they have made. Whilst not all of us can achieve such things, Jennifer did highlight the small ways in which all of us, through our faith and action can do something, even small, that will make a difference. This reminds us of our Marist calling and the way in which Saint Marcellin, who started with a small group of young brothers achieved something beyond his wildest dreams.

It was a good opportunity for the boys to meet young people from other schools who are following a similar curriculum strand as themselves and I believe, quite encouraging for them to see others developing their leadership qualities in the light of faith in Jesus, the Perfect Leader.God bless you all.Fr Pius



DAy FoR DAnIel-FRIDAy 28Th oCTobeRThe “Day for Daniel” was organized by Margaret Canning and Rush House and was held on Friday 28th October. It was a very successful day. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation promotes Child Safety Awareness on this day around Australia and it was extremely pleasing to see how many students in Years 5 to 12 wore Red on the day in support of the Morcombe Foundation and how many students bought biscuits and sausages on the day. The Ministry and Mission Team would like to thank Rush House for the organization on the day, Mr. Gary Keown and the Hospitality students for cooking and we would also like to say a very big thank you to all the boys who supported this cause. Over $2700 was raised and the proceeds of this day will go to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to help them with their important work.

GraNdpareNTS day 2011

year 8 reTreaT dayThis week our Year 8 students in two groups had a retreat day conducted by the National Evangelization Team (NET Team). The theme of the retreat revolved around what it is to be a man and there was time given to considering the range of attitudes people have about this question. The qualities of Jesus as a man was focused upon by the team in ways which made Jesus both attractive and real. Students responded very well to the day and enjoyed both the fun drama activities as well as the more challenging ideas put before them by the Team. NET is a group of 11 young men and women from Catholic backgrounds, from all over Australia, Canada and South Africa who commit to a year of volunteer ministry and evangelization with young people in schools and parishes. It is an inspiration for staff and students to encounter young people of such passion and commitment to proclaiming the Good News of Jesus. The Year 8 students are to be congratulated on their respectful and attentive approach to the retreat experience.

Junior School NewsDear Parents,

The month of November has started so this means that the Season of Christmas fast approaches, but before this, the season of Advent prepares us for the coming of the Christ Child. I always find the Season of Advent one of the most meaningful on the Church’s Calendar as it emphasises many Marist values, which, we hope, become part of our boys’ daily lives. Advent is usually about 4 weeks before Christmas, so four weeks before the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. It’s at this time that we focus on the young parents of Jesus – Mary and Joseph.

The Spirituality of the Marist Brothers is anchored in the person of Mary and, as Marist people, we endeavour to ‘follow Christ as Mary did.’ The Season of Advent is an ideal time for us to reflect on the person of Mary who is at the centre of God’s outreaching to each of us.

During the weeks of Advent, we picture Mary of Nazareth waiting patiently, sometimes anxiously, for the birth of her first born child. The act of patient and gentle waiting is a beautiful image of the young mother as she knows, within her own heart, that the child she carries is special and destined to affect many people’s lives. Aren’t these the same thoughts which go through every mother’s heart and mind in the final weeks of pregnancy? Their baby is special; their baby will affect others in a most unique manner. Mary is seen as a perfectly human mother in Advent, waiting and listening to what she will be called to do at the time of birth.

I imagine Mary was a reflective person, a person who could sit quietly and listen to the Word of God. Her Jewish faith encouraged reflection and through its ancient history has provided many mystics, which Mary would have known about, especially from the Old Testament. It’s not easy to sit quietly and to listen for the Word of God, but during these quiet weeks before the noise and anguish of childbirth, Mary would have taken time to reflect and wait patiently. In essence, Mary would have spent time in solitude, not a word we hear often in 2011, but it’s a very important word for us as well.

I conclude this short Reflection with the words from Henri Nouwen, a Dutch Theologian.

“In solitude we can slowly unmask the illusion of our possessiveness and discover in the centre of our own self that we are not what we conquer, but what is given to us. In solitude, we can listen to the voice of the One who spoke to us before we could speak a word, who healed us before we could make our own gesture to help, who set us free long before we could free others and who loved us long before we could give love to anyone. It is in this solitude that we discover that being is more important than having and that we are worth more than the result of our efforts. In solitude we discover that our life is not a possession to be defended, but a gift to be shared.”

Although neither of our teams won, our boys did very well considering the debating season is a long one and requires much commitment from the boys. FRenCh nATIonAl lISTnIng 2011In August Year 7 students took part in The NATIONAL ASSESSMENT OF LANGUAGE COMPETENCE 2011 conducted by The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). This is Australia’s largest school program that encourages students to learn languages other than English. This year, in the section we entered (Certificate 1), more than five thousand students from Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia participated in the challenge. Boys complete a 30 minute listening task in French and respond to a number of texts of varying length. Their performance was graded at four levels: High Distinction (more than 80%), Distinction (more than 70%), and Credit (more than 60%). All our students performed very well and received Distinction or Credit marks.

DInIng AT A FRenCh ReSTAuRAnT FoR yeAR 7s.On Wednesday 26 October, thirty-five young Marist boys ventured into the unknown as they embarked on a mysterious and exciting journey to Augustine’s on George, one of the most prestigious French restaurants in Australia.

In the weeks before, we all grew very excited and more nervous by the day. As the evening drew near, Madame Leskiewicz was frantically making last minute changes and reminding us of our manners. Every one of us was buzzing with excitement as we awaited the night! As expected, Madame was sure to remind everyone to wear appropriate dress and NO SNEAKERS! So naturally, everyone showed up in sneakers (not).

The boys started arriving at around 6.00pm and by 6.30pm, a tidal wave of boys and girls were waiting on the balcony outside Augustine’s. Boys from Marist were joined by the lovely girls of Our Lady of Angels, a school from Wavell Heights. Many of the boys were excited about the prospect of good food and new people to meet. At 6:30pm, we were joined by Mr Augustine Tso himself, who gave us a warm greeting. Everyone found it quite amusing that Mr Augustine, the owner of a gourmet French restaurant, was an Asian man who needed a translator to speak French for him. Everyone introduced themselves in French then we went inside to be seated.

For our first taste of Augustine’s delicious gourmet food, we were served… a bread roll. As none of us really knew the protocol when it came to eating bread in a gourmet restaurant, no-one wanted to be the first to tear their roll open with their hands. In the end, everyone ended up tearing tiny chunks off

Next came… the dreaded SNAILS! Escargots served with forest mushrooms on brioche. Everyone was skittish around the snails at first, but in the end, most people were swallowing them quite easily.Main course was Chicken Roulade served with mushrooms and crème. We were relieved to be able to eat something familiar like chicken and the other main was Roast Lamb.

Dessert was another story entirely. There was the Vanilla Bean Brulée with burnt caramel ice-cream, and a Cherry Jelly with freeze-dried raspberry and blackberry sauce in the shape of a lovely tree. By the end of the night, everyone was feeling very full and happy, as well as glad about being able to experience the wonders of Augustine’s. After everything, Madame thanked everyone for coming, and I’m sure all the boys were grateful to Madame for giving them the opportunity to experience such a wonderful night.Jack Purtill year 7 Red


InDIvIDuAl AChIeveMenTSCongratulations to Dean Perkins, Nick Houlahan, Calum Mackay and Callum Zipf who recently made it through to the final stage of U12 Rep trials for Brisbane North Junior Cricket (BNJCA). Nick Houlahan has been selected in a championship side as keeper/batsmen and will play in a state tournament in early December. Calum Mackay and Callum Zipf have been selected in the development side as bowlers and will play in a tournament in early January next year. Well done boys and good luck in your upcoming tournaments.

We also wish George Harness the best of luck when he represents Metropolitan North Cricket. George will compete in the Met North School Cricket Tournament on the Gold Coast from Monday 14 to Thursday 17 November. George deserves enormous credit for making it this far through the school cricket representative pathway and we all have our fingers crossed that he can perform to the best of his ability and gain selection in the state side.

volleybAllOver the past few weeks, a group of Year 7 boys have been exposed to the skills of Volleyball, working with a number of quality coaches, employed by the College, during Monday and Wednesday lunchtime. It has been pleasing to see the boys’ level of enjoyment and their skill level grow during these sessions. We wish the boys all the best for their future endeavours’ with Volleyball in Year 8 and beyond. TRACK AnD FIelDTuesday the 18th October saw a squad of 105 boys make their way out to the QE2 track at Nathan for the 2011 AIC Track and Field Championship. Supported by a vocal Yr 8, 11 and 12 group, Liam Woollett running in the 3000m, followed by the 800m runners and the first round of field events got us off to a good start, sitting roughly 2nd /3rd by mid-morning. As the day went on, the quality of competition became increasingly apparent as Iona College stormed ahead and a determined St Edmunds College and St Patrick College chased them hard with Marist fighting hard to stay in touch. By the time the relays arrived, MCA was trailing in 4th position and needed to pull something extraordinary out if they were to get into the top three spots. The U13, U14 and U16 relays performed exceptionally well placing 3rd in each age group and the U15 team were sadly disqualified following a close change. Coming into the final relay, Open relay runners Henri Thonsen, Riley Campbell, Jonathon Kent and Dean Campbell were determined to end the carnival on a high note. Henri Started well getting the boys away and at the change, the boys were in the top three. After a slick change, Riley, took the baton and with an impressive show of speed regained the lead handing over to Jono who worked hard to maintain the position. With only one change to go, and with all the pressure on Dean to hold his nerve, he took the baton perfectly, roughly equal with the St Pats and Iona runners. Coming down the straight, the crowd roared as the three schools crossed the line within 7 one hundredths of a second apart. It wasn’t until the official result appeared on the screen and the Ashgrove supporters erupted that the boys knew they would walk away as the Open 4 X 100m champions.
