From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Family,

Next Sunday is Father’s Day. We pay tribute to our fathers and thank them for all they have done for us. St. Joseph was Jesus’ father on earth. Whilst we don’t know a lot about him, we believe him to be a good man who answered God’s call not to abandon Mary because she was to give birth to the Son of Man. It would appear Joseph was a quiet, positive influence in the role of father.

I read an interesting reflection once where twin sons of a man who had committed several murders were interviewed. One twin had gone down a similar path as his father and had spent most of his life in criminal detention centres. The other twin had become a successful business man and a devoted husband and father. When they were asked why they had turned out the way they had, their answers were identical, “What would you expect with a father like I had.”

Clearly both boys made their own decision with regard to the person they had become.

Mildred Taylor said, “We have no choice of what colour we’re born or who our parents are or whether we’re rich or poor. What we do have is some choice of what we make of our lives once we are here.”

I’d like to share with you a prayer dedicated to St. Joseph, the Patron Saint of fathers:

Dear Lord,You chose St Joseph to protect your son.We ask you through him, to:Guide us in our daily work, shield us from all harm and comfort us in our time of need.Through his example may we find:Sincerity in our endeavoursHumility in our achievementsCourage in our convictionsWisdom in our decisionsAnd the peace that is achieved through just action. We make this prayer through Christ our LordAmen

Sincere best wishes to all fathers for a great day on Sunday.

With every good wish,

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St. Marcellin,

Peter McLoughlinHEADMASTER

SUPPORT THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE THE EDUCATION YOU WANT FOR YOUR CHILDAll children deserve the very best possible opportunities in life. A good education is vital to a child’s future.A “one size fits all” approach to schooling does not hold water. Parents are best placed to make decisions about the educational needs of their child. Families need to be able to exercise choice when it comes to their children’s schooling. Parental choice of school is underpinned in Australia by support from government. Choice is not only a right, but government funding allows it to work.

Funding for Catholic schools is a partnership between Australian families and governments.Catholic schools have a commitment to affordability for families from all backgrounds. For this commitment to continue, schools depend on the current level of government funding support, indexed in real terms, as a minimum.Ensuring Government support for Catholic schools continues is essential to guaranteeing real parental choice in education.

The Federal Government has announced a sweeping review of the nation’s system of funding for all schools – government and non-government, including Catholic schools.

The National Catholic Education Commission (NCEC) has made a submission to the review strongly supporting choice in education. For more information visit www.fundinginfo.catholic.edu.au.

CONvENIRE: THE MARIST COLLEGE ASHGROvE COOKbOOKAs you know, the Marist College Ashgrove Foundation is compiling a collection of the College community’s best recipes and stories in Convenire, a full-colour, hard cover, coffee table-style book that you’ll be proud to have on display in your home.

Convenire is Latin for ‘come together’. It’s what families do when they share a meal at the end of the day and together we can make Convenire an indispensable resource in every kitchen.

If you’ve been meaning to send us your favourite recipes, please do so before the end of the Term. To make Convenire a valuable reference in your kitchen, we need a wide variety of recipes, including:

• Breakfast and brunch ideas;• Lunches and light meals;• Dinners, dinners and more dinners:• Desserts;• Afternoon tea recipes and lunchbox ideas;• Recipes for people with food allergies; and • Christmas and other special occasion recipes and gourmet gifts.

Dinner is a nightly dilemma for many of us so if you have ideas for something fast and fabulous, or a favourite recipe that brings the family together on weekends, please share it in Convenire. You might have a never-fail dinner party recipe that always impresses your friends, or special dishes for Christmas and other celebrations. What about ideas for slow cookers, pressure cookers or the BBQ? Whatever works in your kitchen could be a godsend for another frazzled cook, so please send your recipes to Convenire.

Cooking and sharing food is about a lot more than filling empty tummies and there’s often a story behind a family’s favourite dishes. Maybe you have a recipe that’s been handed down through generations, or that reflects your family’s cultural heritage. What about your dinner party triumphs and disasters that have become the stuff of family folklore? Please share your culinary stories with Convenire.

And, in case you’re wondering, there’s no such thing as a ‘too easy’ recipe for Convenire. We all like to have some quick and easy options up our sleeves on busy days. Similarly, if your dish requires a bit more work but is worth the effort, let us know.

You can contribute as many recipes as you like and whatever you like. Do you make the world’s best fruit smoothie (or cocktail)? Can you make a sauce that transforms a cut of meat into a memorable meal? Are your sandwich fillings making your son the envy of his friends?

You’ll find more information about Convenire and how easy it is to contribute on the College website: just click on Cookbook on the Quicklinks menu on the home page. And remember, we need to gather all the recipes by the end of Term, please.

Best wishes and happy cooking,MARIST COLLEGE ASHGROVE FOUNDATION

From the Deputy Head of School - Teaching and Learning

YOUNG ICT EXPLORERSOn 13 August, four Marist boys – Matthew Lake, Joseph Garrone (Year 10), Cameron Lake (Year 8) and David Lake (Year 6) - journeyed to the University of Qld to participate in the finals of the Young ICT Explorers competition. The competition encourages school students in Queensland to create their best Information and Communication Technology related projects which are then assessed by a panel of academics, industry partners and ICT professionals. Each project is assessed on the criteria of creativity, uniqueness, quality, level of difficulty and project documentation.

In the Years 10-12 category, Matthew Lake and Joseph Garrone showcased their Bilingual Tutor – a program that teaches the basics of French and Japanese – and were very pleased to be placed 2nd in their division and to receive iPod Nanos. Cameron presented his platform game – The Infinity Saga – and took pleasure both in engaging fellow students in his game and in being awarded 3rd place in the Years 8-9 category (and $100 gift card prize). David enjoyed presenting his Maze Game to the judges as well as to many interested students and teachers. The four boys also were interested on the day to view the variety of student projects on show, and to listen to the story of a successful young ICT professional. They found the Young ICT Explorers competition experience to be interesting and rewarding, and look forward to creating new projects for 2012.

Dear Education Community,

In recent months I have had many discussions with school principals, teachers and parents about the transition of Year 7 to high school from 2015.

I have also spoken to a number of Parents and Citizens and Parents and Friends representatives about the coming changes. Those discussions have shown me that while there is broad support for the reform there are also a number of legitimate questions the community has particularly in regards to the transition.

I have taken this local feedback on board and approached the Minister for Education, Cameron Dick, to see if a forum could be arranged for local parents to come and ask the Minister and senior Education Queensland staff their questions.

The Education Minister has agreed to my request and will be coming to The Gap State High School, in the JA Robertson Assembly Hall, 1020 Waterworks Road, The Gap on Tuesday 13 September from 6.00pm to 7.00pm.

Yours sincerelyKate Jones MPMember for Ashgrove

THE PLANYear 7 joins high school from 2015 - A great change for our children - From 2015 Year 7 will become the first year of high school in Queensland. Moving Year 7 is a significant reform that will benefit students at all Queensland schools. We consulted widely before introducing this change, which is supported by Queensland's state, Catholic and independent school sectors.

This change is part of an exciting 10-year journey of reform. It follows the successful introduction of a Prep year in 2007. In 2008 the entry age for Year 1 was raised by six months, bringing Queensland into line with other states.

THE CASE FOR CHANGE AND TRANSITIONHow our schools will be supported - We are managing this important change to our education system with exceptional care. This is why we will pilot Year 7 in up to 20 state high schools before 2015. To ensure a smooth transition, the Queensland Government has planned a comprehensive package of measures, backed by significant financial resources for state, Catholic and independent schools.

The government will provide substantial additional funding to upgrade facilities at state, Catholic and independent schools to ensure classrooms and other learning environments are the best they can be, and give Queensland students the learning opportunities they need.

State school teachers’ will be supported through a comprehensive professional development program and scholarships for further qualifications. Extra funding that Catholic and independent schools will receive may be used for professional development.

Caring for our teenagers in their early high school years - Moving Year 7 to high school is part of wider improvements to our education system. From 2013, Years 8 and 9 will become Junior Secondary in all state schools, with Year 7 becoming part of Junior Secondary in 2015. We will strengthen support for students in Years 7, 8 and 9.

Catholic and independent schools will also ensure Year 7 students moving to high school are well supported. There will be a strong emphasis on pastoral care for our students, and parents will be encouraged to become even more involved in their children's schooling in the high school years.

Helping our rural and remote students - Families living in rural and remote Queensland. Where there is no local school close by, geographically isolated families may opt for their children to attend boarding school, live with a relative closer to a school, live in a student hostel, or use distance education.

The Queensland Government recognise this reform has a unique implication for rural and remote families and has committed to providing those families with the support they need to send their children to high school a year earlier. This support includes increasing the Living Away From Home Allowance for Year 7 students to the secondary student rate.

Why Year 7 is moving to high school in 2015 - By 2015 more than half the children in Year 7 will turn 13. Educators agree that young teenagers are ready for greater independence and the depth of learning that high schools provide, which is why in most other states and territories Year 7 is already the first year of high school.

Our children have gained an extra year of schooling - Introducing a Prep year in 2007 greatly benefited our children and they now enjoy an additional year of schooling. By 2015 Queensland Year 7 students will be in their eighth year of school, and this is the right year for high school to begin.

Teenagers are ready for the new challenges of high school - It makes sense that teenagers should be in high school. As 13-year-olds they are becoming more independent. Teenagers are ready for the challenges of high school, which provide the best environment for academic, emotional and social development. The majority of states and territories, including New South Wales and Victoria, have had Year 7 in high school for a long time.

Queensland is adopting the new Australian Curriculum - From 2012 Queensland is adopting the new Australian Curriculum. In 2012 Queensland will commence implementation of the Australian Curriculum for English, mathematics and science. The history curriculum will commence in 2013.

2011 is a preparation year. Teachers are engaging in professional development, building their understanding of the new curriculum and reviewing their school programs to see where changes may need to be made. Queensland's current curriculum - the Queensland Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting (QCAR) Framework - is aligned with the Australian Curriculum. This means that in most areas, the amount of change in what students learn will be manageable.

How the two changes will connect - The Australian Curriculum focuses on a greater depth of knowledge and understanding as students progress through school. By moving Year 7 to high school, we will be able to provide our students with access to the specialist facilities and expertise to support this focus.

Primary schools that include Year 7 will introduce the Australian Curriculum from 2012 to 2014, before Year 7 moves to high school. This time will be used to ensure a smooth transition. Over the next few years we will continue to support schools and teachers by building on the hard work that is already underway.

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

From the ArchivesHello to you all again. This is the second part of our survey of the development of the Learning Enrichment programme at Marist College Ashgrove, as seen through the eyes of our “legend” Jan Mulvihill. We left Jan as a teacher of wide educational and geographical experience and as a member of the Order of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Now read on...

Jan eventually found herself questioning the direction her life was taking, and she asked for, and received, a period of leave from the Order. As part of this, Jan felt she had to break her ties with Queensland, and Brisbane in particular, and so moved to Adelaide. She applied for a second period of leave, and then decided to draft a letter of resignation from the Order. Almost simultaneously, Jan met the dashing John Mulvihill (then teaching in Melbourne at the time) one day in Church, and life took on a different perspective. They were married, and the size of the family increased dramatically with the arrival of twins. In between her busy domestic duties, Jan found the time to study for and pass piano and theory Music exams. John’s teaching career now took him to Downlands in Toowoomba, and the family was to be there for five years, with two more children arriving in that period. Jan helped supplement John’s income by becoming a part-time assistant to the Principal in Religious Education at a primary school in the area.

Then Jan received a job offer from Stuartholme to be Director of Boarding there. The subsequent move to Brisbane was to see John employed by Marist College Ashgrove in 1988, with the family living in a house supplied by the College in Moola Road. What followed was virtually inevitable: when Jan’s work at Stuartholme was completed, she began part-time supply and voluntary boarding work at Ashgrove. This soon blossomed into full-time employment, largely through the encouragement of Brother Chris Wade, the longest serving Headmaster in the College’s history, from 1983 to 1990. Brother Chris was becoming increasingly concerned about students with learning difficulties at Ashgrove, and one night made a phone call to Jan with a seemingly simple question: “Can you teach kids to read ?” Of course, with Jan’s wealth of educational experience, the answer could only be affirmative, and the concept of the Learning Enrichment programme was born.

Not that the concept was always known by that name, nor did it begin life in a big way; but as with so many things in the history of the College, “a good idea” grew like Topsy and eventually became bigger than anyone could have conceived. Jan is adamant that nothing could have been achieved without the support of the Marist Brothers for the concept, and she says that the support was not lukewarm, or half-hearted: it was total and unequivocal. With their inherent sense of justice and desire for equal opportunity for all their students, the Marists at Ashgrove gave full support to the classroom “battlers.” (Jan in particular remembers Brothers Pat Butler and Julius Walsh as wonderful tutors who gave of their time unstintingly.)

The first sign of official acknowledgement came in the Headmaster’s report for 1990, when Brother Chris paid “tribute to Mrs Jan Mulvihill and our team of volunteer tutors for their work in spoken and written English with (students who find schoolwork difficult.)” By 1995, an individual colour photo of Jan in the Blue & Gold identifies her as being involved in “Special Education”. The next year the 1996 magazine gives a full page to “The Learning Support and Special Needs Department,” with Jan thanking over 30 volunteers for their generous help as tutors. In the early days, students would be withdrawn from their regular classes for special tuition, a procedure which progressed to tutors going to classes with the students to give them assistance. Then in 1998 the College began to develop the modular system in the lower secondary school, and so groups of students who needed assistance with their learning could now be timetabled into English and Maths classes designed especially for their needs. For the first time, the title “The Learning Enrichment Centre” is used in the 1998 magazine. The staff numbers, both full and part time, began to increase, and by 2006 the LEC had been officially opened as “The Brother Ferrer Robinson Learning Enrichment Centre,” inheriting the buildings of the old Music Centre. Jan’s original job of “teaching kids to read” had now become one of co-ordinating a large group of staff and an ever-burgeoning number of students. In 2006, Jan was co-ordinating the activities of no less than 14 full and part-time teachers and tutors, as well as a veritable army of volunteer tutors. A “Gifted and Talented” section had been added to the LEC, in addition to the English as a Second Language (ESL) section, and an Indigenous Support Programme……the original acorn had become a mighty oak, and an acknowledged part of the College curriculum.

Page 14: Marist College Ashgrove Newsletter

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

From the Archives Continued...

And lest you think that all Jan’s energy went into the LEC, consider the following. Jan studied for, and gained, a Masters Degree in Education while working full-time and looking after the needs of her large family; she is exceptionally proud of the several premierships won by her 13B Soccer teams; she inherited Year 10 Dancing Lessons from Brothers Peter Corr and Peter Carroll, and supervised them for 11 years, introducing the girls from Loreto and Mount St Michael’s to the young gallants of our College - (Jan says that one year the lessons didn’t happen, and whenever she meets an ex-student from that Year 10 group, she gets taken to task about their “missed opportunities” !!!); Jan was the instigator of the secondary section of Marist College Ashgrove’s participation in the Australia-wide challenge Tournament of Minds, and this eventually resulted in national success for the school in the Language and Literature section of the competition in 1992; for 16 years, Jan supervised at EVERY dance held by the school from Year 8 to Year 12, no doubt to the undisguised chagrin of some of the young ladies whom she judged improperly clad; many of the photographs in the Blue & Gold annual magazines for the last twenty years have been taken by Jan, one of the keenest of amateur photographers; Jan and John had what Jan terms “two amazing years” as Boarder Parents for Years 7 and 8 students in 2004 and 2005, and Jan is the first to acknowledge the wonderful support she has received from both her spouse and her children: without them, she says, “I couldn’t have done any of it…..”. And if that’s not a comprehensive list of “extra-curricular activities”, I don’t know what is !!!!

Now, in 2011, Jan has decided to take it easy – she’s become just a classroom teacher!!! She’s passed the co-ordination of the LEC on to other hands, but her wonderful contribution to so many students lives on. One of the joys of her life is to meet ex-students who struggled in the classroom, but who have “made it” in the real world, no doubt because of Jan’s help, encouragement, and expertise. Jan, of course, is humble about what she’s done, and certainly doesn’t classify herself as any kind of “legend”, but she is one because she perfectly sums up what Marist College Ashgrove is all about. She has given, and given, and given….and made a difference.

Mission and Ministry NewsA FATHER’S DAY PRAYER by Jane Deren, Ph.D.We give thanks for fathers all around the world.Bless these men for their hard work, their caring, for their generosity and their loyalty to their familiesWe pray especially for fathers, who are struggling to care for their childrenbecause of the economic crisis,Fathers who have been laid off, who are looking for work, who are in despair about keeping a secure roof over their families, in this country and in countries around the world.

We pray, too, for fathers who cannot care for their familiesbecause they are ill, with no health care, no health insurance;

We pray for the millions of fathers who are incarcerated, who are immigrants, refugees or displaced persons, who have experienced violence and are wounded, in body and soul.

You who give life and give it abundantly,Son of our heavenly Father,be with all fathers this day,and grant them your grace and your healingso they may live out their vocation as fatherswith dignity, strength, and peace. Amen

FATHER SON bREAKFAST - FRIDAY 2ND SEPTEMbER - IS SOLD OUT.

The Ministry and Mission Team would like to say a very big thank you to all of the families who have supported this new initiative. We have had an overwhelming response and all tickets have been sold out.

MATES FREE DRESS DAY - TUESDAY 13TH SEPTEMbERLast week the College received an urgent request from CARITAS Australia for donations to help send food to Somalia to try and alleviate the situation. The worst drought in Africa has left more than 12 million people in need of food, water and basic facilities. The situation has now been declared a “food crisis”. They expect that within the next month the situation is going to escalate. The Mission team have pledged to CARITAS that all the proceeds of our MATES Free Dress Day on Tuesday 13th September (the last week of school this term) would be sent to CARITAS for use in Somalia.

We are asking all students to make a special effort on the free dress day, please put in as much as you can. We hope many of you might be thinking of more than a $2 gold coin for this one – whether you come in free dress or not. Caritas have recognised that we have been generous earlier in the year with the Lenten collection and are very grateful for anything we can do for the people in Somalia.

On the MATES FREE DRESS DAY, Pizza will be available at Lunch time for the Junior school through to Year 10 on Tuesday 13th September and for the Senior School, Years 11 & 12, on Wednesday 14th September. Please support this cause. $10.00 Pizza and Drink. Thank you.

WHAT SHOULD bE OUR ROLE IN THE RE-DEvELOPMENT OF OUR PACIFIC AND SOUTH EAST ASIAN NEIGHbOURS?On Thursday 1st September Branch 1 of the Knights of the Southern Cross (QLD) is hosting a talk on East Timor by Fr. Wayne Stanhope, former Provincial of the Carmelite Fathers in Australia/East Timor. The talk will be at St. Michael’s Church Hall, 250 Banks Street, Dorrington.

Father Stanhope visited many parts of East Timor during his term of office and has learnt a great deal about the people and their needs. Fr Wayne is quoted as saying: “.... Independence is vitally important to the East Timorese people and we are very fortunate to have local priests and religious in East Timor working with their own people. The church is not ‘doing’ for them, but rather finding ways to resource the East Timorese people and to empower them to bring about change in their own situations and a greater quality of life.”

ROSIES - STREET RETREAT PROGRAMLast Monday evening, I went to Rosies with the following five Year 12 students: Nick Coughlan, Will Redmond, Kenneth Lopez-Loo, Dominic Smith and Jack Moran. After arriving at the Rosies headquarters we were introduced to the other members of the team for the night. We listened to the story of the origins of Rosies, received some advice about the situation we were going into, and were informed about potential issues and dangers and how to deal with those. Then we gathered in a circle and prayed together the Rosies mission prayer. It was interesting to meet other young people: teachers, students, a young married couple from various backgrounds, all coming together out of a commitment to do something for those in a less fortunate situation.

Rosies is not just about handing out coffee, shirts and toiletries, although this is part of their mission. It is about non-judgemental listening and sharing with people, who for all sorts of reasons, come for a warm drink and for a chat. Some of the women and men who come along are really looking for more, someone to talk to about their daily problems, or hobbies, or movies or even the issues in their lives that have contributed to their current situation, rather than just a handout.

Reflecting on the night I was struck by two aspects of our time there. The first was that these people loved the opportunity to have someone who listens to them, who would think them important enough to listen to their story, someone with whom they could have a bit of fun, share a joke with and not just look at them as another mouth to feed. The second aspect was the way in which our boys handled themselves. They were able to talk comfortably with a wide range of individuals in a very natural way. It occurred to me that this sense of ease is most likely due to the strong emphasis that Marist places on justice and mission and that they have been made aware throughout their education here of the importance of these two aspects of Christian life. Best wishes and God Bless.

WALK FOR INNOCENTSLast Friday Ignatius House organised and ran the Walk for Innocents that was held on The Flats. Innocents Relief is a charitable organisation that sponsors children in underdeveloped countries in Africa, India, Philippines and many others. Innocents Relief spend very little on overheads, so they are able to keep administration costs to a minimum. In fact, 96 cents in the dollar goes directly to the children, orphanages and schools to ensure the children get the money they need to feed, educate and clothe them. We are very pleased that this year Innocents will be supporting the Marist Brothers new school for poor children in Pailin in the north of Cambodia which our immersion students visited last year and will visit again this year. Thank you to all of the staff and students who supported this great cause.

With over 20,000 attendances, these are some of the most popular classical music concerts in the world.

After graduating from Marist in 1999 Adrian studied at the Qld Conservatorium, before completing his studies in Europe with Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Christian Wirth and Arno Bornkamp, gaining the Prix de Perfectionnement, Diplome d'etudes Musicales and his Masters of Music. Junior School NewsDear Parents,

The person of Jesus Christ continues to fascinate people. His teachings are still affecting human lives, even in the 21st Century and some people have done extraordinary acts to carry the message of Jesus to others.

Of course, as Christians, we are all charged with this challenge – to live the Gospel of Jesus – to make it relevant to our time in history and to bring the teachings of Jesus to those around us, mainly through the lives we lead.

Over the past 20 to 30 years, religion has not had a good reputation and researchers will tell us that the vast majority of people, especially in Europe and even here in Australia, have turned their backs on religion and claim that their lives are not really affected by what the Church teaches. There are some, however, who would still consider themselves Christian, but have decided that the institutional Church has lost its meaning for them.

The important point in this never-ending discussion is that Spirituality and the teachings of Jesus are still very evident and important in many instances; especially in young people. A great local example of this is when the entire College gathers for a Mass or special assembly in the Champagnat Centre. During prayer and reflection, there is complete silence and the boys participate in a very inspiring and reverent manner. These few minutes speak to us about the fact that the young men in this College have the desire and ability to be quiet and, in stillness, reflect on the sacred.

Just recently, I read an article about a wonderful woman named Edith Stein, who did extraordinary things for God and for spreading the word of Jesus. These are a few points from the article.

• Edith Stein was born on the 12 October, 1891, in the German Empire. She was a precocious Jewish child who rejected God and her Jewish faith at the age of seven! She was a radical on many spheres and when she became convinced of the truth of an idea, her life was devoted to the cause.

• At age seven, she did concede, intellectually, that the guidance of her mother and older sister would be beneficial, but she rejected, totally, her mother’s Jewish piety and God. Edith explained that she saw no evidence of God and that the believers, Jewish or Christian, were not good role-models and they didn’t really believe in God at all.

• Edith was a brilliant woman and when she was in her early 20’s, Edith was studying with Europe’s leading philosophers. She also came into contact with Christian intellectuals, but when she was 30 years old, she began reading the autobiography of Saint Teresa of Avila and shared with a friend – “This is the truth.” For Edith this would mean irreversible change.

• Edith was baptised a Catholic in 1922 and began lecturing widely in Europe, mainly to women’s groups on the importance of the education of women and their role within the Church. The Nazis had come to power in Germany and Edith was soon blocked by the Nazis and was forbidden to travel or lecture to groups.

• This caused Edith to make a life-changing decision. To her mother’s dismay, Edith decided to enter the Carmelite Convent [enclosed] in Cologne, Germany and took the name of Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.

• Due to her Jewish heritage, Edith had to flee Germany and escaped to a Carmelite Convent in Holland, but there was no escape. The Third Reich began rounding up all Jewish converts to Christianity in Holland and the Carmelite Convent was not spared. Edith was captured and put into a filthy and crowded boxcar, which eventually transported the occupants to Poland.

• Edith and her sister Rosa, who had also converted and had stayed with her, were both murdered in the gas chambers at Auschwitz on the 9 August, 1942. Edith Stein was 51 years of age.

• Edith Stein was beautified, by Pope John Paul 11 on 1 May, 1987, in Cologne, Germany. This was during World Youth Day and the Pope said the following words to the millions of young people gathered to remember Edith Stein – a modern day Saint – who believed what her heart was telling her.

• “Your life is not an endless series of open doors! Listen to your heart! Do not stay on the surface, but go to the heart of things and when the time is right, have the courage to decide! The Lord is waiting for you to put your freedom in his good hands.”

These are a few items of news for you:

LETTER OF THANKS FROM SAINT FRANCIS XAvIER PRIMARY SCHOOL: The Junior School SRC were responsible for collecting over 2000 books for the Saint Francis Xavier School’s Library and Carnival and for many families were affected by floods. I received the following letter from Veronica Lawson, the Principal and we were also forwarded the photographs, from when the books were presented. Thank you to Patrick Lewis and Samuel Knynenburg who were the main organisers and to the Junior School families who responded so generously to this appeal.

“On behalf of the Saint Francis Xavier School community, I would like to extend a sincere thank-you for the outstanding efforts of your students in their recent support of our Book Stall at the school carnival. From the donations, we were able to replace and restock the library, as well as raise $1500 on the carnival day, through the sale of second-hand books. This exceptional result was made possible by both the quality and quantity of books donated by the Marist College Junior School. Please pass on our thanks to the staff, boys and their parents for their generosity.” Veronica Lawson.

YOUNG ICT EXPLORERS:On Saturday 13 August, David Lake, [Year 6 Red] participated in the Young ICT Explorers and did very well. We congratulate David on this great achievement and thank him for writing a short Report for the Newsletter. Well done, David!

YOUNG ICT EXPLORERS‘On Saturday 13 August, I spent the day at the University of Qld for the Young ICT Explorers Final. I had entered a game that I had created using Game Maker, and at the Final I presented the game and posters that I had made to promote it. There were many competitors there from primary and secondary schools, and we all had our projects on show for each other and the team of judges. It was a fun day and it was especially fun to have people come over to play my game and ask me about it. When the judging was over, I was not lucky enough to win a place in the top three for the Year 6-7 division. However, I did come home with a Rubik’s cube and some other cool things from the competition bag. I’m looking forward to entering Young ICT Explorers next year and I’ll be starting on my entry soon.’

MATES FREE DRESS DAY- TUESDAY 13 SEPTEMbERLast week the College received an urgent request from CARITAS Australia for donations to help send food to Somalia to try and alleviate the situation. The worst drought in Africa has left more than 12 million people in need of food, water and basic facilities. The situation has now been declared a “food crisis”. They expect that within the next month the situation is going to escalate. The College Mission team have pledged to CARRITAS that all the proceeds of our MATES Free Dress Day on Tuesday 13 September (the last week of school this term) would be sent to CARITAS for use in Somalia.

We are asking all students to make a special effort on the free dress day, please give as much as you can. We hope many of you might be thinking of more than a $2 gold coin for this one – whether you come in free dress or not. Caritas have recognised that we have been generous earlier in the year with the Lenten collection and are very grateful for anything we can do for the people in Somalia.

On the MATES FREE DRESS DAY pizza will be available at Lunch time for the Junior School through to Year 10 on Tuesday 13 September and for the senior school, Years 11 & 12, on Wednesday 14 September.$10.00 Pizza and Drink Please support this cause. Thank you.

Junior School Sport NewsJUNIOR SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIvAL 2011On the Tuesday before the Ekka Break the Junior School held its annual Inter House Athletics Carnival on McMahon Oval. On a day that would have to be described as absolute perfect weather for an athletics carnival, the Junior School boys were keen to show off their athletic talent and the benefits of their recent hard work at training, in front of the rest of the Junior School. As well, the Junior School students were extremely keen to participate to the highest level to help support their Colour Team with the view to win the coveted Junior School Athletics Championship.

As always, the Age Championships were keenly fought out between numerous boys in each of the age groups. Some of these Age Championships were the most competitively fought competitions in recent times, which made for a very interesting and exciting day. All boys, who competed in the Age Championships should be extremely proud of their performances and be congratulated on their efforts.

Once again, the Colour carnival stirs up the most emotion and effort from the Junior School students. It’s fantastic to see a high level of interest and participation in all the colour events. The highlight of the day for some would have to be the novelty events held in the afternoon. In the end, we had a very spirited and closely fought Colour competition; with just 147 points separating first and fourth. Congratulations to the Red Team who won the Junior School Athletics Carnival. Thanks to all the parents for their support on the day, as well a big thank-you to the Junior School Staff for their help with the Carnival.
