Mass & Reconciliation

From the HeadmasterDear members of the Marist College Community,

Today is the last day that our Year 12 boys attend school. Tomorrow, their exams start and on Friday 19 November we will farewell them from the College as they participate in the three rites of passage:

The Graduation MassThe College Farewell

The Graduation Dinner

I’m sure the boys look forward to these three events that, in their own way, affirm their time here at Marist College Ashgrove.

Co-incidentally, today is Remembrance Day. I’m sure the parallel won’t be lost on our Year 12 boys between remembering all those men and women who went to war and never returned and the familiar road they have travelled for the last twelve years which is about to end.

Why is this day special to Australians?

At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war. This first modern world conflict had brought about the mobilisation of over 70 million people and left between 9 and 13 million dead, perhaps as many as one-third of them with no known grave. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead.

On the first anniversary of the armistice in 1919 two minutes’ silence was instituted as part of the main commemorative ceremony at the new Cenotaph in London. The silence was proposed by Australian journalist Edward Honey, who was working in Fleet Street. The two minutes’ silence was popularly adopted and it became a central feature of commemorations on Armistice Day.

After the end of the Second World War, the Australian and British governments changed the name to Remembrance Day. Armistice Day was no longer an appropriate title for a day which would commemorate all war dead. In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane issued a proclamation formally declaring 11 November to be Remembrance Day, urging all Australians to observe one minute’s silence at 11 am on 11 November each year to remember those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

The following verse is from a poem, “For the Fallen” written by the English poet Laurence Binyon which has become known as The Ode and a feature of all military commemorations.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morningWe will remember them.

Lest We Forget

Concluding with the words of our Lord as they appear in Matthew’s Gospel 5:9.

Happy are those who work for peace; God will call them his children!

With every good wish.Yours in Jesus, Mary & St Marcellin

Headmaster’s NotesPASS GrAduAtion dinnerRecently Mrs Lucy Amolo and her husband, Max, had the honour of accompanying Jordie Ellis to his PASS Australia Graduation dinner. For the past two years Jordie has been attending PASS training and coaching every Friday at primary schools around Brisbane to achieve a Certificate III in Community Recreation. Mal Meninga and a friend began PASS as an after-school activities program for kids in Canberra in 2000 and they now provide training and mentoring for over 900 Indigenous youth reaching 18, 000 school kids a week. PASS provides young children and school staff with a very positive experience working with Indigenous youth like Jordie in sports and health activities. In addition, the confidence and empowerment to the Indigenous trainees has been very powerful and gives them positive and real experiences for facing the wider world. From all the Queensland trainees Jordie was nominated as one of three students for the inaugural PASS trainee of the Year… ..and to his credit he won! He was presented with a shield which will bear his name as the first winner of the award and this shield will be awarded each year. I think it's staying on display in the PASS Office. He also received a trophy and various other prizes. It was clear just how highly Jordie is thought of by both his fellow students and the PASS staff as everyone wanted to shake his hand and have a yarn - even before he was awarded the prize. The shield and prizes were presented by big Mal and Steve Renouf and his acceptance speech had Mal and Steve hanging on every word. Well done to Jordie - it's a great reflection of his hard work and gentle nature. Thanks also to all of you for all your support. Michael Cochrane will have big shoes to fill next year as he starts the PASS program!

MelBourne CuP lunCh90 ladies and one very lucky gentleman had a very enjoyable day at the College Melbourne Cup Lunch held in the Cyprian Pavilion on that ‘one day in November’.

On such a beautiful day the College String Quartet entertained us on the balcony where the guests enjoyed their welcome drink and beautiful appetizers organised by Mr Gary Keown and the Hospitality students.

A pre-lunch Fashion Parade, kindly organised by Michelle Carmody, showed just what can be done with that LBD (little black dress).

Headmaster, Peter McLoughlin, welcomed everyone to the lunch, said Grace and judged the best hat/fascinator.

What would a Melbourne Cup Day be without sweeps and raffles and these were very strongly supported, for which we thank everyone.

Following a beautiful buffet lunch catered by the Services staff at the College, guests prepared themselves for the race that stops the nation and all too quickly it was over!

Our thanks to the following for helping make the day such a success –

• Members of the College String Quartet• Mr Gary Keown and the hospitality

students• Mr Matthew Tarlinton, Mr Garry Lawler

and the College Services Staff• Mrs Michelle Carmody, models Harriet

P&F NewsAs the school year rapidly draws to a close, the executive of the P&F would like to extend its thanks to all those who have supported our ventures throughout the year.

Firstly, to those parents whose journey with the Ashgrove Marist Community is coming to an end – we thank you most sincerely for all the work you have done over the many years of your son/sons’ educations at Marist. Your efforts have ensured that our younger boys now enjoy wonderful facilities and resources. We wish you (and your sons) every success for the future and hope you will remember your years at Marist with great fondness.

To the staff at Marist College, whether involved in teaching, administration or support services, we thank you for your dedication and all the many “behind the scenes jobs” you do to make our endeavours successful. Our particular thanks go to Mr Peter Mc Loughlin, Mr Richard Ward and Mr Michael Druce who are regular attendees at all P&F meetings.

To our huge team of willing volunteers who assist each sub-committee, again your efforts are greatly appreciated. It is only with your assistance that we are able to contribute so actively to the College Community.

On your behalf we would like to pass on our thanks to the conveners of each of the sub-committee who work tirelessly at different times to organize and enlist support for their ventures. Their enthusiasm has obviously been contagious as we are never short of volunteers when required!

Thanks from Boarder Support committeeI would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to all of the ladies who have provided delicious food for boarder’s afternoon tea this year. We have had no end of amazing delicacies from extra rich mud cakes, chocolate mousse, home made pastries and breads, slices, chicken wings, meatballs and even fresh prawns. The boys have really loved every morsel and are truly appreciative of your support and dedication.

I will take the liberty of keeping you on the roster for next year unless I hear otherwise from you. You are wonderful, thank you.

Please let me know if there are any changes to your contact details.

Of course we would welcome anyone who would like to go on the roster for next year, you don’t have to be “Masterchef’s” as the boys devour anything!! Please contact me if you would like to help out: [email protected]

I would also like to thank the parents who have supported our boarders in other ways such as transporting boys to the many appointments and sporting commitments, those families who have invited boys into their homes and also those who have hosted boarding families as short notice. All of your support is gratefully appreciated.

Thanks also to those parents who joined us for the now annual parent dinner on Formal evening. This is such a great opportunity for day and boarding parents to meet – sometimes for the first time - to celebrate the end of their son’s secondary education and to share stories of their son’s journey at the College. The first year we held this event was 2009 and we had 60 in attendance, this year 2010, we had 104, which was fantastic. Next year’s formal night is March 19th which will come around very quickly, so planning is underway. Stay tuned.

I would like to wish the Year 12 boys and their families all the very best for Graduation Day and also good luck for next year and beyond.

Merry Christmas to everyone and I look forward to your continued support for our boarding community in 2011.

Kind regardsMichelle CarmodyGillian SempleP&F Boarder’s Support.

FeeS rAFFleWe are delighted to announce that the fees raffle for term 4 was won by the family of Liam Mc Ellister (7 Blue).

Congratulations!

thAnkS to our teACherSAs this semester rapidly draws to a close, and our sons are stressed out with exams/ assignments, please spare a thought for our teachers who still have to mark them all! If you would like to email your sons’ teachers to thank them for all their efforts - just write their ……surname initial @ marash.qld.edu.au. A quick email can mean a world of difference to a bad day. If each family would email just one teacher we would have over 1000 positive comments coming their way! If you have any difficulty or are unsure of how to spell the teacher’s name, please email me at [email protected] and I will ensure they are forwarded. Our Christmas wish list for 2010 is for your continued support next year when hopefully we will be overwhelmed by eager volunteers; for a few more faces at P&F meetings (!!) and finally that you and your family a restful, safe and memorable Christmas!

Have a great holiday,

deb Moloney(P&F vice president)

From the Deputy Head of School - Teaching and LearningConGrAtulAtionSThe Marist College Community congratulates James Tilbury, Year 12 Slattery 2005 for being the Queensland Rhodes Scholar Elect 2011.

Upon graduation from Marist College Ashgrove, James attended QUT as a Dean’s Scholar to study Civil Engineering. During his time at QUT, James volunteered with Engineers Without Borders. This inspired James to apply for a volunteer position in Cambodia which he begins in November, 2010.

At the conclusion of his time in Cambodia, James will leave for the United Kingdom to take up his scholarship to study a Masters in Environmental Change and Management. After graduating from Oxford, James plans to work in international development and use what he learnt at Oxford to help alleviate poverty in the least developed countries.

ConGrAtulAtionSCongratulations to Nathan Hearn, Year 12 Foley, who recently scored 100% on the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test. This test assists with the selection of students into medicine, dentistry and health science degree programs at undergraduate level at universities.

ConGrAtulAtionSCongratulations to Kieran Birchley, Year 12 Ridley, for being accepted into the JENESYS Explore Nippon program. The program is an initiative of the Japanese government, and its purpose is to provide "cultural enrichment" to students with a keen interest in Japan and Japanese culture. Places are awarded to students from all over the world with Kieran being accepted along with 240 students from several thousand Australian applicants. The Japanese government contributes about 35 billion yen in financial aid of the program. The process in gaining acceptance into the program consists of a written application (including a questionnaire, a letter of recommendation and general health information), and then if successful, an interview process. The successful students are then chosen from the shortlist decided on at the interviews. Kieran recommends Marist students apply for this opportunity next year: It is important to know that the applicants need not have knowledge of the Japanese language to apply. It caters for all students aged 15-17. For further information: http://www.afs.org.au/aus_en/view/4510

dAY For dAnielOn Thursday the 28th October the Junior school students participated in the Day for Daniel fundraiser for child safety awareness while on Friday the 29th October the Senior school students also participated in this good cause. The Year 12 students promoted these two days and all worked very hard in various roles to make these two days a success. The Mission team would like to thank the Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students who prepared, cooked and served an abundance of chicken and chips to sell at lunch, with all the funds being donated to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. A special thank you also goes to the following staff, Mr. Gary Keown, Miss Margaret Canning, Mr. Doug Perrers and Mr. Michael Callanan who assisted on the day. These two days were aimed at promoting the very important message regarding children and their personal safety and was also aimed at creating a new awareness in the whole community about ways in which we can try to reduce the numbers of missing children in Australia and keep our children safe.

YeAr 10 reFleCtion dAY On Thursday the 28th and Friday the 29th October the students in year 10 gathered together in the Cyprian Pavilion for their Reflection day which was led by Mr. Michael Fitzpatrick. Michael led the students to explore issues of personal and spiritual development. It was a time for sharing and listening to each other and the students were challenged to look within and develop the person they are. These Reflection days provided a very rewarding and challenging yet invaluable experience. The students participated in various activities and hopefully have taken small steps in developing themselves further which will help to prepare them as they take the next step on their school journey and become active members of the senior group for 2011. On both days the students participated with energy and enthusiasm and the experience was well received by all involved.

roSieS Street retreAtOn Friday the 29th October our last group of Year 12 students for this year participated in the Rosies Street Retreat. I felt honoured and very privileged to be able to share my first experience of this outreach retreat with the following students, Gregory Fisher, Filipe Gama Silva, James Eddy and James Jessup. Our evening began with a pre-brief from Deb our team leader for the night who outlined what we would be doing over the next four hours. The first job we were involved in, was putting together personal packs of toiletries consisting of razors, soaps, toothbrushes, shampoos, conditioners and moisturers. While preparing these packs I found myself reflecting on this and a feeling of gratefulness and an appreciation of what I have became more apparent, than what I would feel at most other times. Every day simple necessities that most of us take for granted, our clients on the street, accepted in the same way that I feel when I receive that special gift on my birthday. We packed the vans with food and drinks and set off for the most important experience of the evening, sharing a conversation and a hot drink with our clients. We had the opportunity to have a conversation over a coffee with many different people from many different backgrounds who all have a story to share. Being able to share in this dialogue with our clients is a very special experience and I am grateful that I was able to be a part of the Rosies Team that evening. I would also like to thank Ms Julia Palaszczuk and Mr Paul Kearney for their ongoing support and involvement in this outreach program throughout the year. The College has been lucky enough to secure more of these experiences for the Senior boys in Semester 2 of 2011 and I eagerly look forward to coordinating this program again next year. (Mrs. Caroline Smith, Campus Minister - Senior School)

CAMBodiAn iMMerSion FundrAiSinG BArBeQueOn Saturday the 30th October the boys who are travelling to Cambodia on Immersion in December were given the opportunity to hold a barbeque at the Ashgrove shopping centre. Ray White Ashgrove extended the invitation to the College to hold a sausage sizzle and all the money raised could be used to aid the community in Cambodia that our students will visit in December on their Immersion. 4BC hosted a live radio broadcast from 8.00am to 1.00pm from Ray White while our students provided all the very busy Saturday morning shoppers with that much desired sausage sandwich and drink.

YeAr 8 reFleCtion dAYOn Wednesday and Thursday the 3rd and 4th Of November the Year 8 students had an opportunity to attend Reflection days held in the Cyprian Pavilion run by NET Ministries Australia. The NET team shared the basic message of God’s love in a fun and exciting atmosphere which included music, drama skits and small discussion groups. The boys were also very lucky to have one of the graduating students from the Year 12 Marist class of 2009 Matthias Falzon who has been involved in Net Ministries Australia as a facilitator for the last 10 months of this year. He has travelled many parts of Australia working in schools running the Reflection Days that our students experienced over these two days. The students also had an opportunity to reflect on their own Marist journeys this year and what experiences they have gained from being at Marist and what further opportunities they wish to achieve as a year group in 2011.

ChriStiAn initiAtion At MAriSt ColleGe AShGroVeThe following students completed their Initiation into the Church at a College Mass held in the Chapel of Our Lady and St. Marcellin on Sunday 31st October. Patrick Beveridge, Dylan Cooper, and Darcy Wright received the Sacraments of Communion and Confirmation at this mass while Tristian Donaldson, Fitz Douglas, Jack O’Connor and Jakob Wright recieved the Sacrament of Confirmation. Christian Initiation begins with baptism and the Sacraments of Confirmation and Communion complete the Initiation process to become a member of the Church. Baptism is where each person is immersed into the waters of God’s life, Confirmation completes baptism, with the seal of the Holy Spirit and Eucharist brings everyone into communion with our risen savior and all God’s people. We would like to congratulate all of these students for completing their Initiation into the Church. It was wonderful that all of the families and relatives of these boys were present at this ceremony to witness these students receive these Sacraments. Many families had travelled very long distances and were able to share a supper with the students at the conclusion of the Mass. We pray for these students and hope that they keep the gifts of the Holy Spirit active in their hearts.

JoB PledGeMarist College staff can voluntarily agree to have money deducted from their fortnightly pays as part of the Job Pledge program. The program has been running at Marist College for eight years and in that time we have been able to employ a refugee or migrant worker for a Term or Semester each year. Employees have come from Sudan, Iraq, Rwanda and Afghanistan.

For this semester we have been privileged to have been working alongside Hanif Afzally, an Afghani man who has spent the last eleven years as a refugee inside the border of Pakistan. Since joining the staff Hanif has worked in a variety of roles, including as clerical officer and in technology maintenance. As well as work experience Hanif’s placement has enabled him to develop his English language skills and to learn what it is like to work in an Australian work environment.

From the point of view of staff it has been a great privilege to have worked with Hanif. We have come to know Hanif as a man of deep faith and great gentleness and respect. For boys in the secondary school, Hanif’s sharing with each RE class the experiences of his life and country has been a rich education. Hanif has given the boys a unique insight into the challenges so many people in our world face and from which we are generally so isolated in Australia. We thank Hanif for all he has done to broaden our horizons.

St VinCent de PAulMarist College AshgroveSt Vincent De Paul Conference

2010 has been a very rewarding and successful year. We have worked hard to fulfil the Vinnies mission of “living the gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy, and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society.”

The range of activities has been substantial – weekly yard bbqs to raise funds and awareness for Vinnies projects, selling drinks at the gym dances to raise funds, providing afternoon tea for families of sick children at Ronald McDonald House twice a term, Saturday morning yard cleaning with members of the local parish Vinnies conference, the Winter Appeal, the Homeless Sleep-Over that raised our consciousness about the issue of homelessness and have us an experience of the city and of sleeping rough, the Dodge Ball competition, clothes sorting at the Vinnies depot, the Christmas Appeal and the Assist-A-Student Program , to name a few.

Thanks to all those very faithful students who attended our weekly Tuesday lunch time meetings and to those many students who supported the Conference activities so generously and with such good humour.

Special thanks and congratulations to our Leadership Committee for 2010:

President Laurent DuboisVice-President Scott McCarthySecretary Ryan DonnellyPublicity Alexander Grace and Dane WilliamsCommittee Ben Andrews (Year11), Richard Ta (Year 12), Myles Gorman (Year 10)

Students with a generous and compassionate outlook should consider joining the Vinnies Conference in 2011. From the current Year 11s in particular we need a leadership group to be able to set an appropriate course for next year and to motivate and direct younger students in pursuit of Vinnies’ ideals. Students from Years 8 to 12 have proven that everyone has a contribution to make.

Assist a Student Program 2010

The Leadership Committee have planned a number of events to finish the year with St Vincent De Paul. One of these is the Assist-A-Student Program, the details of which are below.

On Grandparents’ Day we raised more than $700 which will support the education costs of at least eleven students in an Asia Pacific country for one year. Many thanks to all those generous Grandparents who supported the College appeal for this program. Secondary students will have the opportunity to donate to the program before the end of the year.“Poverty is a vicious cycle. In many Asia Pacific countries poverty means talented individuals lack opportunities. The education of a person develops self-esteem and skills and in turn has a positive effect on the whole community. Education is a key to enabling an individual to support themselves, their families and their communities independently in the future. The Assist a Student program gives the opportunity to provide the funding for an education scholarship to train and educate a student for one year. A donation of only $70 will be matched with a student from one of our partner countries. Throughout partner countries, local St Vincent De Paul Society members select students from families in need to be supported by the program. They receive a scholarship for one year and the money donated contributes to their education needs.

The program includes students at all levels – from primary, secondary and post-secondary. Scholarships are allocated across the countries to ensure fair distribution.

One of the program’s strongest and most attractive features is that administration costs, funded by the Society, are kept at an absolute minimum, so nothing is deducted from the $70 for such costs. 100% goes towards the student's education needs (including course fees, uniforms, books, etc.) for one year.” www.vinnies.org.au

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2010

Hello to you all again. This will be the last missive from the Archives for 2010, so I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. I’d also like to give some advance notice of the direction your humble scribe hopes to take in 2011 with regard to “From The Archives.”

So far we have examined the progress of the College from its inception in 1940 to the end of the Directorship of Brother Valerius Brogan in 1962. In that period of time we have met heroes of many kinds, from visionaries to dogged pragmatists, from charismatic leaders to those who viewed themselves as humble toilers of limited ability. All played their part, and all contributed to the growth of the College. By 1962, there was no question that the College was a permanent fixture on the educational landscape: the only query was how big it would become. At the end of 2010, with new tennis courts being constructed on the former Number 4 Oval, and a new Science Centre rising daily on where once the old courts lay, the answer is still indeterminate……..Doubtless many of the early pioneers would be astonished at the changes that have occurred in six decades, and would marvel at the size of the school, both in terms of infrastructure and its human population. The mightiest of oaks has grown from a very small seed.

We could continue with our story in chronological order of Headmasters, but recent events have persuaded me that a change is in order. Most of you will know of the sad, sudden passing of our much-respected Head of SOSE, Mr Peter Fowler; this very morning, another popular colleague suffered an attack of something both painful and frightening. He has been hospitalised for tests, and we all pray for his full recovery. Aside from being awakened to his own mortality, your humble scribe is being pushed by such events towards a direction he has for too long postponed: a review of the contribution made to the College and its students by teachers or ancillary staff who are presently employed at Ashgrove. I propose to conduct one-on-one interviews with such people, and then to present articles for your perusal in the Newsletter based on those interviews. In my humble opinion, there is no school anywhere better served by its staff than this one, and I want readers to know and appreciate the quality of the people with whom it has been my privilege to be associated at Ashgrove. If I do not do this NOW, it may never be done……and I will never forgive myself for not praising these stalwarts when I had the opportunity. Two provisos to this: some great teachers are still with us in the staffroom, but only as photos near the main entry doors….they have themselves gone to their Great Reward. I propose to eulogise these people because I knew, respected, nay loved them; they stand the equal of the giants of Ashgrove’s past and deserve their moment in the sun. Secondly, I will include no person on the present staff who does not wish to be included. Heroes in fiction are supposed to be modest: many of our real life ones ARE. If they choose to remain anonymous to you, I will respect their wishes.

So with that prospect and aim in mind, I wish you all the best for the festive season, and hope for your continued interest in 2011. Yours,

From the Archives, dave Cameron: 38584591 or [email protected]
