From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove Family

Our current Strategic Plan concludes at the end of this year. Shortly I will publish a document outlining the achievements of the 2008-2012 Strategic Plan. Our next plan will run for three years, 2013-2015.

Our College Leadership Team in consultation with the staff has begun the process of developing the new plan. One of our first tasks was to develop a new Mission Statement for the College. We have consulted with staff and have developed the following draft Mission Statement for the College.

MISSION STATEMENTWe are a faith community, based on the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church and the life of Jesus Christ. As was Champagnat’s, our vocation is to make Jesus known and loved and draw on the inspiration of St Marcellin and the Marist characteristics of family spirit, presence, simplicity, love of work and being in the way of Mary.

Our students are encouraged to demonstrate good scholarship, a love of learning, independence in thought and action and the readiness to take responsibility for their own formation.

Members of the College family act courageously and stand in solidarity, committed to the creation of a more just world.

As you can see, the Mission Statement identifies significantly with our Marist heritage, the Catholic nature of our College and our commitment to the holistic development of each boy. I invite your comments and/or suggestions until 24 February. Please use the email address [email protected] for your responses. My thanks in anticipation of your involvement in this process.

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St MarcellinPeter McLoughlin

ShAvE FOR A CuREHi my name is Charlie Harris and I am a Year 11 boarder in Ignatius, and this year on 17 March I will be shaving my head for a cure. The money I will raise will go toward patients and families who are affected by Leukaemia and other blood diseases; it will be invested into research of these illnesses which affects 11,500 Australians each year.

The idea of supporting this cause originated from my primary years when a teacher shaved her head for a cure. Since then it has always been something that I would like to do, and achieve a reasonable goal to support this great cause. From this I ask for any donations to support and assist me in reaching and going beyond my goals. Please be generous as the Leukaemia Foundation supports many people who are in need!

To sponsor please visit:

http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/Charlieharris

PRAYERS PLEASEPlease pray for the repose of the soul of:

• Katherine East, the sister of Bronwyn Hicks who passed away on Monday 6 February. • Pauline Rafter, grandmother of Will (10G) and Tom Rafter (8G) who passed away recently. • Noreen Casey passed away aged 90 last week. Her late husband Pat was P&F President here in the

60’s. They had 5 boys, Bernard (55), Terry (65), Kevin (66), Danny (70), and Pat (72) and subsequent grandsons attend the College.

• Jack Donnelly (9G) whose grandfather passed away suddenly on Thursday 9 February.• Old Boy Nathan Quinlan (1984-1991) brother of Brendan (1995) and Ryan (1999)• Noel Jerks, grandfather of Daniel Osborne (2011)

Eternal rest grant to them and may perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

CONgRATuLATIONS• James Mee (8G) who was selected in the Queensland 12 -17years golf team that competed against

NSW in Newcastle recently. In his 4 matches James won two, drew one and lost one. Great effort James.

OPENINg & SEARChINg OF bAgS AND LOCkERSThe College is committed under its ethos and under law to the wellbeing of its students and to the maintenance of a safe environment.

Parents and students need to be aware that:

• From time to time, students will be asked to open their bags and lockers for inspection by delegated staff.

• This will occur on occasions when there is a reasonable suspicion that such contain objects that may be harmful to the particular student or to other students (knives, drugs).

• Such searches will be carried out discreetly and parents informed as soon as reasonably possible.• Where it is suspected that students have brought to school inappropriate material on personal mobile

phones, memory sticks or personal computers, those objects will be temporally confiscated and parents will be contacted to assist the school to take the matter forward.

Important information for Catholic school parents about government funding

Next Monday (20 February) the Australian Government will release its report of the Gonski Review of Funding for Schooling. This report is the first step towards the Government’s plan to introduce a new funding system for Australian schools from 2014 and it could have significant consequences for Catholic schools.

Some of the key facts about funding for Catholic schools are:

• Catholic schools educate 1 in 5 Australian children, yet on average operate with 10% less recurrent funding than government schools, even when parent contributions are taken into account [NB: ‘recurrent funding’ is the money received every year by a school for its day to day operations].

• On average, 53% of Catholic school income is provided by Federal government and 19% by State government, while 28% is contributed by parents and community.

• On average, Catholic schools receive just 73% of the annual recurrent government funding (per student) received by government schools. Catholic schools receive $7,708 per student while government schools receive $10,562 per student.

• Including government funding + parent contributions, Catholic schools have an average annual income of $10, 008 per student, while government schools receive $11,132 per student and Independent schools $13, 711. (MySchool website 2011)

• Through parent and community contributions to schooling costs, Catholic schools deliver savings to Australian tax-payers of around $2.2 billion per year.

The school funding debate should not be reduced to an ‘us’ or ‘them’ argument. The success of Australia’s education system relies on children in all schooling sectors - Government, Catholic and Independent - receiving fair and equitable government support.

Parents and carers are encouraged to take note of the recommendations of the Gonski report and remain vigilant of the school funding policies that will be framed by government and opposition in the weeks that follow. For further information about funding for Catholic schools please visit:

POLICY ON FOOD ALLERgIES Marist College Ashgrove recognises that food allergies, in some instances, may be severe and even occasionally life-threatening. The foods most likely to cause allergic reactions are peanuts, tree nuts, dairy products, eggs, soy, wheat, fish, and shell-fish. The school has introduced this policy to reduce the likelihood of severe allergic reactions of students with known food allergies while at school and to assist members of the school community with understanding and implementing appropriate preventative and reactive measures. In accordance with the recommendations of Anaphylaxis Australia, Marist College Ashgrove does not have a ban on particular foods, including peanuts and nut foods. The reason for this is that banning these foods can possibly cause complacency amongst staff and students and it does not allow for hidden allergens contained in some foods. POLICY

1. The school and parents share responsibility for implementing appropriate preventative and responsive measures for allergic reactions.

2. Parents will provide accurate and current information related to their son’s allergy.

3. Parents of students with allergies who are at risk of an anaphylactic reaction will provide current information on the students’ conditions and treatment from the student’s medical practitioner.

4. Parents of students with allergies who are at risk of an anaphylactic reaction will develop, in consultation with the medical practitioner and the School Nurse, an Action Plan for the student while at school.

5. The School Nurse will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Action Plan in the school.

6. The school will ensure that regular training is provided to school staff in allergy awareness and emergency response.

7. The school will develop guidelines for student camps, activities and functions where food is provided to students.

8. The school tuckshop will avoid as much as possible the sale of items containing nuts.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL PARENTS: All medical information records need to be updated as necessary with address, phone numbers and medical conditions, otherwise your child could be compromised without up to date information. Sr. Jane O’SheaHealth Centre

If you are new to the College you might ask: What is the Marist Card Day? Well, the Card Day is a long-established College tradition that brings together over 120 card players from our own and surrounding communities for a day of cards and good times. Hosted by the P&F, Card Days are held once each Term on a Wednesday (dates are on the College Calendar) from 9.30am-2.00pm in the Brother Cyprian Pavilion. Our guests enjoy the day playing card games such as bridge, euchre and 500. We provide and serve a home-baked morning tea, serve sandwiches for lunch, hold raffles and run lucky door prizes throughout the day.

The success of our Card Days comes from the efforts and contributions from a band of volunteers made up from current and past Mums. You can volunteer to help serve on the day, donate a raffle prize, or bake something delicious. We’d love to welcome you as a Card Day volunteer...especially our New Junior School Mums. This is wonderful way to meet other Mums whilst contributing to the College community.

FROM THE ARCHIVESHello to you all again – welcome to 2012. As I concluded in the last edition of 2011, I intend this year to continue with identifying “legends” on the staff at Ashgrove. However, owing to an extremely busy start to the year, the interview with my next character hasn’t yet happened, and his story will have to wait until the next Newsletter. Instead, this article will revert to a chronological history of the College, and picks up the story in the last year of the Directorship of Brother Valerius Brogan in 1962…….

Valerius Brogan by 1962 had been Director of St Mary’s College Ashgrove for three years. He had achieved marvellous things in terms of teamwork among the Brothers and students of the College, and it was undoubtedly a happy and prospering school community.

And yet, and yet…..so much of the College’s success was owed to the sheer hard work of Brothers like Francis McMahon, who laboured long and lovingly on the main oval which now bears his name; much of this work was done with technology that had little relation to the modern world, the mowing of lawns and the rolling of cricket pitches depending on the muscle power of a horse named “Treasure”. Nobody could fault the commitment of Valerius and his band of Brothers, but to the Provincial Council in Sydney there was more than a touch of “amateur hour” about the whole show. After much deliberation, it was decided that St Mary’s College Ashgrove was working “hard” when it really needed to be working “smart”. The upshot of this Council thinking was that the school needed leadership of a different kind to the traditional model supplied by Valerius Brogan. The “normal” term of a headmaster at the College was six years; Valerius had been the incumbent for only three, yet it was decided to replace him to inject new blood and progressive ideas into the Ashgrove community.

Valerius might have taken this as a slight, but he was instead understanding of the change and the reasons behind it; in Mark Farrelly’s words, he “ accept(ed) the reality of the situation with equanimity.” He had, in fact, much to be proud of in his abbreviated tenure in carrying on the great traditions of the Marist Order. His replacement, Othmar Weldon, was a vastly experienced leader, having been Director of St Joseph’s College and Kogarah in Sydney, and he was regarded as the Brothers’ “go to” man in building and finance activities. His time at Ashgrove would be short, yet it would see great expansion in the infrastructure of the College, and the putting in place of ideas and policies which would last far into the future. Othmar was practical, in that his labours at the College resulted in “bricks and mortar” buildings, but also visionary because he was able to anticipate trends in the future. He was, in Mark Farrelly’s estimation, “ a complete headmaster”………

The major development of Othmar’s time was a three storey dormitory block, blessed by Archbishop Duhig in October 1963, in use for the start of the school year in 1964, and officially opened by Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Clem Jones in April 1964. Boarders at the College now had modern “state of the art” accommodation facilities. Simultaneously with the dorm opening in April 1964, the foundation stone for a second three storey classroom block was laid, and this was virtually completed by the end of the school year. Peter Carrick’s 1958 miracle of new

FROM THE ARCHIVESclassrooms had been doubled. The fact that the new buildings had become necessary was of course a reflection of increasing school population; the new buildings in themselves, rivalling anything offered by any school anywhere in Queensland, meant that the school population would further increase because parents found the College an attractive place to send their sons. The story of the College from this time onwards is one of continuous development in both infrastructure and population, to the point that the pioneers of 1940 would have great difficulty in comprehending the scale and pace of change.

Yet Othmar was not only a supremely efficient organiser: he also understood the importance of people. Buildings in a school were very necessary things, but unless they were staffed with good teachers, their true value would never be realised. Up to this time, photos of the staff of the College show a great preponderance of Brothers with only a smattering of lay teachers. Othmar was the first of Ashgrove’s headmasters to actively recruit lay teachers to the staff, and to say that he made wise selections is to vastly understate the case. He met a young fellow named Michael Gubbins at a Rugby match in Sydney in 1963 and immediately offered the youngster a job at Ashgrove – at the time of Gubbo’s tragic death in 1991, he had given the College 27 years of staunch and devoted service, and was beloved by staff and countless students for his wit, kindness and gentlemanly ways. The main staff area, the Gubbins Room, commemorates both Michael the man and Othmar’s sagacity. Nor was Gubbo an isolated case: Leo Slattery, “The Old Master”, a popular and inspiring English teacher for whom Slattery House is named, was another of Othmar’s inspired choices, as were Leo Cutler and Jack Hefferan, two vastly experienced Primary school teachers Othmar hired to buttress education in the Junior School at Ashgrove. Othmar also worked tirelessly to sell his message to the Ashgrove community at large – expansion was not only necessary, it was vital, and everyone had a part to play, Brothers, teachers, parents, students, and friends. Othmar revitalised the Parents and Friends Association to assist in fund raising, and ensured regular newsletters entered homes with accounts of what had been achieved, and what still needed to be done. He was a great believer in communication as a means of raising awareness.

Othmar became headmaster in 1963; by the end of 1964 he was gone, promoted to the top job of Provincial of the Brothers. (His peers readily recognised his abilities and his potential. There is a hilarious sequence of photos of the Brothers of the Ashgrove community in 1964: they are in obvious electioneering mode, and four of them are holding signs which when linked proclaim GO FAR WITH OTHMAR; happily the actual voters who decided the identity of the Provincial agreed with the Ashgrove proposal.) His was one of the briefest periods of leadership in the College’s history, yet it was of great significance for the Ashgrove of that time and for subsequent years because it ushered in change during a decade when the only thing that was going to be constant WAS change.

P&F NewsDEAR PARENTS,

Another busy fortnight for the P&F with our first meeting for the year; Year 8 dinner; sports canteens and “Gym Dance” supervision. As I write we are also organizing the welcome drinks for our Year 5 parents which will held on Monday night.

Once again we have many people to thank. It was wonderful to see new faces at our P&F meeting – these are held once a term and everyone is welcome.

The Year 8 dinner was a great success with 160 guests in attendance – Melissa Bailey our Year 8 dinner co-ordinator and her team of helpers did a fantastic job and everyone enjoyed the magnificent new savouries and menu designed by our College chefs Pete and Jean. A special thanks to Fr Pius for his moving talk and slide presentation about his time on immersion in Cambodia and to Peter McWhirter who spoke to us of the Champagnat Trust Sports Lunch to be held on Friday February 24 (even I knew the names of the many famous sports identities who will attend!) The Champagnat Trust provides bursaries for boys from financially challenged families to attend our College -all the proceeds of this luncheon go to the Trust. If you would like more details please contact Peter on 0412 732 143 or for a booking please ring Kay Wells on 3858 4586 - there are a few tables still available.

Thanks also to those who have assisted Roberta with the Sports Canteens. Roberta does a phenomenal job in organizing these and attending every weekend – she could really use your help if your son is participating in any sport at home games - all help is appreciated. Even if you haven’t contacted Roberta with your availability, please just “rock up” and volunteer if you find yourself with some free time.

bOARDER SuPPORTThank you to all the wonderful cooks who provided food for our first afternoon tea last Friday. The quantity and variety of food was quite amazing and as we had just about every boarder attend, every morsel was eaten. Your generosity and support is wonderful.

The next afternoon tea is Friday February 17th for group 2 ladies.

Thankyou also to all the new mothers who have joined the roster this year. I am in the process of finalizing the helper’s list, which should be done by Tuesday 14th, so I will forward it shortly.

Information for this year’s Year 12 Parent Dinner on Formal night of March 10th will be sent home this week. Numbers are limited and will sell quickly so if you are keen to attend, please return your booking and payment form asap. As in previous years this function will be held at Iceworks and will be a 14 course cocktail banquet and one complimentary drink on arrival for $60.00 p/hd.

The invitation for this event is extended to parents of both day and boarding boys in Year 12 and is a wonderful evening, a great way to meet other parents for the first time or catch up with old friends as well. I hope you can join us.

If you would like to become involved in supporting our boarding community in any way, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

If you are a keen musician or if you even just love to sing, come along to rehearsals. Performance Choir, (for 8 to 12 students), rehearses on Friday mornings between 7.30 and 8.30 AM and MaristVoices, (for years 5 to 7), rehearses from 7.30 and 8.30 AM on Wednesday mornings. Both choirs focus on both contemporary and traditional choral repertoire. Singing in an ensemble provides boys with an opportunity to improve and develop their vocal skills, socialize with peers who share similar interests and allows boys contribute to the College in a broader sense. If you are a classroom music student and are thinking about studying music beyond school, singing is an important skill to have as it enhances general musicianship. Mission and Ministry NewsPRAYERRemember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known in any age, that anyone who fled to your protection, implored thy help, or sought your intercession was abandoned. Inspired by this confidence, therefore,I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. Do not, O Mother of Jesus, despise my prayers, but graciously hear and grant them. Amen.St Marcellin Champagnat; pray for usSt Mary MacKillop; pray for usMary our Good mother; pray for usAnd we remember always; to pray for each other.

ANNIvERSARIES & uPCOMINg EvENTS15th Feb Lost in the Snow – Marist Aniversary

The Memorare is a popular Marist prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary dating from the 15th century. It is named from the first word of the latin prayer – Memorare meaning remember – and it addresses Mary as virgin in her role as intercessor for us in all our needs and difficulties. It is a prayer with special significance for Marist people as it was for Marcellin Champagnat who prayed it when he and Br Stanislaus were lost in the snow in February 1823. They had been to visit a sick brother and lost their way in a disastrous snow storm. Father Champagnat invoked Mary in the words of this prayer, and almost immediately there was the appearance of lamp light in the distance. The two exhausted men made for the spot and were given shelter for the night by the local farmer.

MINISTRY IN ACTIONMy Experience at holy Rosary Primary SchoolOn Wednesday period 5 & 6 on the 8th of February, I went to Holy Rosary School at Windsor with a few other boys from our college. As soon as we got there we were put into a game of touch (I was the only one to score a try) and we were welcomed into the game where we were all just called Marist. When the bell rang we went up to the grade one and prep classroom where I read to two grade one children called Natalia and Xavier. They didn’t really want to listen to the story so they just played on the playground. After that we went to the year six and seven classroom where they were learning about Antarctica. I helped two girls with their assignment. We were all sad to leave because we had a great time. Br Mark has told us that there’s the Gala touch football comp coming up and now we’re all begging him to take us. I hope other people will have as much fun as I do and I’d like to thank Br Mark on behalf of the students who went today.Riley Fegan – Year 9 boarder

NEWS FROM ACTINg hEAD OF MISSIONIt has been a very hectic and exciting week for the Mission team with the celebration of our 2012 Inaugural Mass on Tuesday night, 7 February. Many thanks to our special celebrant, Bishop Heenan from Rockhampton. This is the Bishop’s 50th year as a priest and he has just celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a Bishop. As a former student at the College, it was great for him to walk around the college and to take many trips down memory lane! We were also very blessed to have 10 priests join us as co-celebrants. These priests came from our surrounding parishes and their presence was surely a positive affirmation for our college.

The success of the mass is always dependent on the hard work and dedication of so many staff and students. My most heartfelt appreciation goes to the Services, Mission, Music and Technical Support staffs. Thanks also goes to the many staff and students who helped out in so many ways, and the boys themselves for their presence and participation. With the distribution of College Leadership and Senior Student badges, as well as a special presentation to our new Year 5 students, this night is always about recognising our boys.

Our SVDP chapter has met many times and is very excited about a range of fundraising ventures for the year. We will be continuing our Thursday morning BBQs in the yard, and trialling a Friday morning BBQ at the pool. The boys will also help out with selling drinks at Gym Dances, Ronald McDonald House visits and upcoming Lenten Appeal activities. Congratulations to the following boys who were elected to the Vinnies’ executive for 2012:

The Vinnies’ boys meet every Tuesday in 801 at lunch time and the Executive meets every Monday at morning tea. We have had over 100 boys participate in our meeting so far! That is a wonderful testament to our call of service at Marist College Ashgrove.

With Ash Wednesday approaching, the Mission Team is busily planning our Liturgy and a variety of fundraising activities for Caritas during Lent. In the secondary school, each House has been set a target of $1500 to raise! In total, as a school with both secondary and junior components, we are hoping to raise $15000 for Caritas, especially for our MAPS ventures. The boys will be given more information about this at the Ash Wednesday Assembly. We will also be selling pancakes on the preceding Tuesday. More about that will appear in daily notices. Once again, Vinnies’ boys will be involved in this activity for both schools.

NEWS FROM ThE COLLEgE ChAPLAINLast Tuesday evening after a prayerful Eucharistic celebration of the Mass by Bishop Heenan, I had the opportunity to talk to a few of the parents. Apart from the comments: ‘I have never seen anything like this before,’ and ‘what a lovely Mass,’ one comment I heard twice in the same day has stayed with me. Both a parent and a staff member said to me that what strikes them the most about Marist is the way in which the younger boys are so warmly welcomed by the older students. The mother had tears in her eyes as she spoke of not expecting such a thing in a boys’ school.

Of course, like other schools, Marist has its issues with boys struggling to find their way in a school so big; however it does work hard on the tradition and culture of this school being about family. From the very first days of boys beginning at this school they will hear of Saint Marcellin’s vision of Marist school having a family spirit.

I believe that it is this focus of family spirit that makes Marist a school that ‘works.’ The vast majority of boys enjoy belonging to this Marist family and look forward to coming to school. And when young people are happy in what they are doing they are open to the things for which we exist: learning.

Saint Marcellin’s vision comes from the Gospel. He obviously focused in his prayer on the compassionate and merciful Jesus, and the tender love that existed between Jesus and His Good Mother. May our own love of Jesus and Mary translated into prayer and action help these boys grow into fine young men.Yours in Jesus and Mary our Good Mother.Fr Pius SM

Junior School NewsDear Parents,

We are now into Week 4 of the new and busy term. I hope that the many new families in the Junior School are settling well. From my observations, the boys have settled and although there were 210 new boys in the school this year, the beginning of the year has gone very smoothly. This is due, of course, to the hard work and organisation of the Staff, but also to you the parents, who ensure that the boys arrive at school all prepared for their day. The boys, too, have been exemplary in their co-operation and behaviour.

While in South Africa over the Christmas holidays, I read an interesting article in the weekly Catholic Newspaper called ‘The Southern Cross’. I brought the article back with me to share with you; this is a very short summary.

Each month, the Vatican has a ‘Missionary Intention’ and the Intention for January, 2012 was the following:

“That the dedication of Christians to peace may bear witness to the name of Christ before all women and men of goodwill.”

“It’s not every day that a Prime Minister appoints a founder of a lay Catholic movement to his cabinet. Italy’s new Prime Minister, Mario Monti, has done just that. He recently named Andrea Riccardi, the Founder of the Sant ‘Egidio Community as a member of his government.

Sant ‘Egidio’s mission is peacemaking. At the time of the civil war in Mozambique, the community was a key player in bringing about an accord between the warring factions and the eventual peace that now reigns in that country. Today, Sant ‘Egidio continues to play an

important, if discreet role, in efforts to make peace in various regions of the world.

The movement had miniscule beginnings. A small group of lay people came together in the Church of Sant ‘Egidio in Rome, in the 1960’s, to pray and discern how they should serve God. From this beginning, of mustard-seed proportions, came a community and an organisation which has made the Gospel mark on global affairs.

The story of Sant ‘Egidio shows how it is still true that ‘the Spirit blows where it wills.’ The Church has officials and institutions dedicated to world peace, but this does not mean that the Spirit works only through them. Nor does a Spirit-filled group have to make huge headlines to be effective. Indeed, the persuasive power of Sant ‘Egidio has, to some extent, been its sheer lack of power. A small and dedicated group, it is said, is all that is required to change the world.”

The sentiments expressed above can also be said for the founding of the Marist Brothers. A young, energetic French Priest, in a small village in rural France, brought together a group of simple and uneducated young men and inspired them to do ‘something great for God’. They lived in simplicity and unity and brought hope, dignity and inspiration to the people around them at a time of turmoil, violence and chaos. From this beginning ‘of mustard-seed proportions’, grew ‘The Little Brothers of Mary’ an international Order in over 70 countries around the world. This small beginning should never be lost to us and it should be a daily reminder that we can make a difference each day, by the way we live each day of our lives. This is especially important for Marist educators as we have countless opportunities of showing the compassion, understanding and love of Jesus to the boys entrusted to our care.

Junior School News Continued...

Here are some items of news for you:

As I promised in the last Junior School News, I continue to introduce the new Staff in the Junior School. These teachers are 2 of the new Specialist Teachers who have been appointed to the Junior School in 2012:

Mrs Meredith Erbacher: [Teacher Librarian]

At the start of the year, we were delighted to welcome Meredith to the Junior School. Meredith has been a Teacher Librarian for many years, in both state and private schools, most recently at the Queensland Academy of Science, Mathematics and Technology and at the Anglican Church Grammar School. Meredith is looking forward to working with junior school boys once again and from what I have observed, Meredith is getting on very well with the boys and the Staff. Meredith has a lovely way of relating with the boys and is very supportive and affirming of the Staff in the Junior School. A very warm welcome, Meredith.

Ms hannah Neilson: [Japanese]

As you would be aware, Japanese is now part of the Junior School Curriculum once again. This is a great innovation for the Junior School and when the boys enter the Senior School, they will have a good grounding in the Japanese alphabet and culture. Hannah started at Marist College Ashgrove, in the Senior School, in 2009 and has taught Modern History, Japanese and English. Hannah has lived in Japan from 2004 to 2006 and always enjoys her return visits. YEAR 7 CAMP – WEDNESDAY 8 FEbRuARY TO FRIDAY 10 FEbRuARY:I am always relieved when the busses drive into the College grounds, bringing the boys and their teachers back safely after a Camp. From all accounts, the Camp was a wonderful experience and the boys were a pleasure to be with. I have heard from a number of Staff that the Year 7 boys of 2012 are very impressive group and the many new boys have added something very positive to the group. I quote from an email from Philip Oostenbroek, who co-ordinated the Camp for us:

“This year’s camp was one of the best we have had in so far as student behaviour and participation. The boys were very well behaved and respectful. The night time activities were great, [drumming, campfire and bush tucker and a talk by a local Aboriginal man from the local Gubi Gubi tribe.] The boys were shown a true delicacy in roasted Bunya nuts and how to make a fire in less than a minute by rubbing two sticks together. On the last night, Ryan Apps threw a few packets of wrapped lollies around the oval and the boys used their torches to fine them. A truly spectacular sight and very enjoyable.”

Junior School Sporting News• Players must wear full appropriate College Cricket uniform whilst playing C.I.C. games. This includes

the long white sleeved College Cricket shirt which can be purchased form the uniform shop plus long white pants.

SWIMMINg (MR ANDRE COIS – JuNIOR SWIM COACh) The Junior School Swimmers have been working tirelessly all season, with a large majority of boys continuing their training throughout the holidays. To all the boys that have trained over the holidays and are still coming down to the pool regularly, I urge you to continue your efforts over the next crucial weeks.

As most would have heard by now the Junior School Swim Camp which was held at the school in January was a great success. Not only did the boys put in big efforts in the pool sessions, but they also banded together to develop a team atmosphere with the new swimmers in the college. I would also like to add how pleased I was with the turnout on this year’s camp, with 75 boys attending across the age groups.

The first Friday Night CIC lead-up carnival was held last Friday (3 Feb) at Nudgee College. Although the carnival itself was interrupted by a huge downpour of rain, the Personal Best times seen across the age groups is a promising sign for what the CIC carnival may hold.

The North-West District Championships were held last Friday with the following boys progressing through to represent their district at the Regional Championships on February 29: U/10 –Henry Meland, Will Jackson, Peter Kruip, Max Chandler, Nick McGill; U/11 – Sebastian Leavy, Will Symington, Lachlan Kahl, Ben Geraghty. U12 – Matt Dangerfield, Tom Dangerfield, Tom Carroll, Mike Lidstone;. U/13 – Callum Zipf, Sean Cumming and Will Ryan. Hopefully we will see some great times from these boys on the day, and we wish them the best of luck with qualifying for the Metropolitan North Team.

To all Junior Boys, the countdown to CIC day is almost up, with less than a month now before the competition. These last weeks are absolutely crucial. I hope to see you all on pool deck giving your best effort every session. Make the most of what little time we have left! Make every session count!

INDIvIDuAL AChIEvEMENTSCongratulations to Sebastian Leavy (Year 6 green) who won the Under 10, 50 metre Breaststroke event at the Queensland Sprint Championships held on Sunday 5 February. This is the same event that he won last year, when he went on to come fourth in the Queensland Primary Schools Championships, against the same boys. Well done Sebastian!

Christian Dickens (Year 7 Red) was selected to represent Queensland at the National Futsal titles held at Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium, Windsor, Sydney in January 2012. He represented the U12 Queensland City team as goalkeeper and they made it through to the final, only to lose 5-2 to Northern NSW Central Coast. Despite the loss he had the consolation of being voted his team’s MVP for the tournament and has also subsequently been invited by the selectors to represent Australia as goalkeeper in the tournament to be held in Malaysia at the end of this year in December 2012. An amazing achievement by Christian!

It is always good for the College to recognize boys’ individual achievements. If you are aware of an achievement of a particular boy/s please email the accomplishment to [email protected].

RugbY REFEREES The College is seeking interested parents, older age students or old boys to referee throughout the upcoming CIC season. If you are interested in becoming a rugby referee please send your name, contact details and rugby experience to: [email protected]

From the Head of SportWORD FROM ThE hEAD OF SPORTTo mark the beginning of the 2012 AIC Sporting Year, Mr McLoughlin, Mr Ward, a contingent of yr 12 students and myself made our way up to St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe for the annual Ecumenical Service and to discuss the year ahead in sport.

The hospitality afforded to us by the St Patrick Community was wonderful and the theme outlined for the AIC this year was Competition and Camaraderie.

With this in mind, it was pleasing to know that already in round 1 Marist boys exemplified this with their sportsmanship and hospitality when hosting Iona College for Volleyball and Cricket last weekend with some tough games being played.

I would like to encourage all boys, staff and coaches to ensure they epitomize these ideals by working towards the following each game:

• Always meet and greet the opposition team, especially when we are hosting• Coaches and Captains introduce themselves to the opposition Coach and Captain and discuss how the

game will go ahead and any issues prior to the commencement of play• Always play hard and always in the spirit of good sportsmanship• Win, lose or draw, ALWAYS thank and congratulate the opposition• Every player and coach should thank the match officials following the game

Whilst this is second nature to most of us, it is important that complacency does not creep in and at all times we aim to model these ideals.

Marist boys have a reputation for being hard competitors who give it their all in everything they do, and through their integrity and good sportsmanship they are known for their strength of character too.

I wish all boys and coaches the best of luck this week in sport.

Sincerely, Mr Phillip holdinghead of SportMarist College Ashgrove

uNIFORMIn order to start the year well, boys are reminded about the expectations when representing the College in sport:

Wet Weather AnnouncementsDespite the sports departments best efforts to push for games to be played where possible, it is inevitable that the weather will cause some games and training to be cancelled.

Parents and students are encouraged to follow MCA Secondary Sports on twitter for the most up to date announcements regarding training and games. This can be accessed by both the internet and via most telephones and I encourage all parents and students to sign up and follow MCA Secondary Sport as this will be the first place that any announcements will be made regarding wet weather notices. Those with an iPhone or similar can download the twitter app and receive instant updates directly to their phones free of charge. I encourage all parents and boys to visit the college web site and follow the links which explain how to create your own twitter account and follow us.

PLEASE NOTE: Boys/families should not assume that games are cancelled. If no notification has been given, players should attend their schedule matches as usual.
