Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Community,

This coming Sunday 27 November, is the first Sunday of the new liturgical year. It is the beginning of the season of Advent. The Church tells us Advent has a twofold character:

1. As a season to prepare for Christmas when Jesus Christ’s first coming to us is remembered.

2. As a season when that remembrance directs the mind and heart to await Christ’s second coming at the end of time.

Advent is thus a period of devout and joyful expectation. After four Sundays of Advent we then celebrate the birth of our Lord. I’d like to share the following Christmas reflection with you.

ATCHRISTMAS

mend a quarrel,seek out a

forgotten friend.Dismiss suspicion

and replace it with trust.Write a love letter.

Share some treasure.Give a soft answer. Encourage

youth. Show your loyaltyin word and deed. Keep a

promise. Forget a grudge. Forgivean enemy. Listen. Apologise if you

were wrong. Try to understand. Don’t envy.Examine your demands on others.

Think first of someone else.Appreciate. Be kind; be gentle.

Laugh a little. Laugh a little more.Deserve confidence. Do not be complacent.

Scorn malice. Express your gratitude.Welcome a stranger. Gladden the heart of a child.

Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth.Speak your love. Speak it again. Speak it still again.

Christmas is celebration, and there is no celebration thatcompares with the realisation of it’s true meaning – with the

sudden stirring of the heart that has extended itself towards thecore of life.

And only thenis it possibleto grasp thesignificanceof that firstChristmas.

I hope our Marist College family will experience a very holy, happy and safe Christmas blessed abundantly by the baby Jesus.

Your effort is truly valued.

CAThoLIC SChooLS SeRve The WIDeR CoMMUnITy Catholic schools are committed to serving some of the most disadvantaged in the community. As the second largest provider of education in Australia, Catholic schools have assisted countless Australian families over the last 180 years.

The Federal Government is conducting a sweeping review of funding government and non-government schools, including Catholic schools.

The National Catholic Education Commission has made a submission to the Review calling for funding certainty so Catholic schools can continue to support our most disadvantaged. For more information visit www.fundinginfo.catholic.edu.au.

Catholic schools have a commitment to supporting all families – no matter their economic or social circumstance. The capacity for Catholic schools to maintain this commitment depends on the Government delivering funding support.

Catholic schools are resourced at 10% less than government schools. On average, the income per student in Catholic schools is lower ($10,008) than in government schools ($11,132).

Catholic schools need increased government funding support to be able to continue to provide quality education and services to some of the most disadvantaged in our communities.

From the ArchivesHello to you all again. Apologies for missing the article in the last Newsletter, but it is that time of the year when things educational become frantic, and inevitably there are just not enough hours in the day to do all that must be done. The fault was not entirely mine, however; the subject of the next article, (who remains nameless until we deal with him next year in 2012), simply could not and cannot in the present moment find the time necessary for me to conduct the interview to uncover the intimate details of his educational career. The long and the short result of that is – no article in this Newsletter either.

I thought we might, however, review where this year’s scribblings have taken us, and investigate the possibilities for next year. In the December 2010 edition, I announced my intention of conducting interviews with persons still presently employed at the College, and then to make the essence of those interviews the basis of Newsletter articles; alternately, I felt past staff members who had earned “legendary” status should also be the basis for similar articles. I proposed to abandon the strictly chronological approach to the history of the school that had hitherto been employed. The rationale behind such a change was simple: we had just lost our esteemed Head of SOSE, Peter Fowler, and his sudden, sad passing led me to comment that: “In my humble opinion, there is no school anywhere better served by its staff than this one, and I want readers to know and appreciate the quality of the people with whom it has been my privilege to be associated at Ashgrove. If I do not do this NOW, it may never be done……and I will never forgive myself for not praising these stalwarts when I had the opportunity………. some great teachers are still with us in the staffroom, but only as photos near the main entry doors….they have themselves gone to their Great Reward. I propose to eulogise these people because I knew, respected, nay loved them; they stand the equal of the giants of Ashgrove’s past and deserve their moment in the sun.” What I could not have known at the time of writing was that the College would suffer another savage and untimely blow with the tragic death of Tim Baldwin in America in the Christmas holidays, and this only reinforced my determination to alter the path of these scribblings.

So, to that end, your humble scribe has this year presented articles on: John Batty, Head of Science from 1983 to 1985, great teacher, Renaissance man, and fisherman and punter extraordinaire; Frank “Fingers” Eadie, Manual Arts stalwart from 1976 to 1996, genial companion and raconteur par excellence; Denis Callaghan, versatile teacher from 1984 to now, and at age 78 Ashgrove’s “Mr Chips”; Michael “Gubbo” Gubbins, expert at English and R.E., gentleman

Page 11: Marist College Ashgrove Newsletter

From the Archives continued...

and gentle man, from 1964 to 1991; Graham Lawson, “Lawso the Torso”, sports and Walkathon organiser without peer, 1973 to now; Gerard “Ged” Monsour, A.K.A. “Yasser”, genial Housemaster and all-round-good-bloke, 1981 to now; Jan Mulvihill, the Godmother of the Learning Enrichment Centre, 1988 to now; Peter “Chippa” Murdoch, founder of the Manual Arts Department in its present form, and holder of the longest non-retirement statistic in College history, from 1973 to 1994; and finally, Mr Arch Ferrier, legendary sports coach, groundsman, and turf wicket curator of the early days, 1945 to 1954. I hope the articles managed to convey the admiration in which I hold every one of these people, for it was their contributions which helped the College to develop so much in so comparatively short a time. They would never think of themselves as having the right to be acknowledged as any kind of “legend,” yet such are they all, for “by their deeds shall ye know them.”

A quick count will reveal that to be nine personalities, and lest you think I have exhausted the possibilities for articles in that number, let me assure you the surface has not even been scratched. Numerous other characters are already singled out for the spotlight; some, sadly, have already declined my urgings to tell their stories, and as I promised in 2010, I have respected their desire for privacy, (though not without severe, continuous twitching of my writing fingers….).

So I propose to continue in this vein in 2012, letting the sun shine on the deeds of other “legends” of the Ashgrove story. The only proviso to this will be the odd occasion where, for whatever reason, the article will not make the Newsletter deadline…..to make sure there is a “From the Archives” in each edition, if a “personality” piece is not available, I will return to a chronological history of the College. This will date from the end of the Directorship of Brother Valerius Brogan, Headmaster of the College from 1959 to 1962, with his replacement Brother Othmar Weldon putting in place the processes by which the infrastructure of the school would multiply in a way which has continued to this day…….

It remains only to wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year, and to express the hope that you will find interest in the scribblings of 2012.Yours From the Archives,

Dave Cameron 38584591 or [email protected]

ALLIAnCe FRAnçAISe CoMPeTITIon ‘LA BeLLe FRAnCe’The following Year 10 students recently received their prizes and certificates from the Alliance Française competition ‘La Belle France’. They participated in the writing section and were chosen as finalists. Their reward was an interview!

From 22 finalists, Matthew Lake was awarded 2nd prize.

The five other finalists from the College, Joe Treston, Toby Crockford, Josh Zanetti, Ben Liversidge and Connor Prince were all awarded Highly Commended - Mention Bien.

Congratulations to all students who entered the competition. There were others who learned poems and wrote essays and I would like to acknowledge their efforts. I would also like to acknowledge and thank Madame Leskiewicz who helped to facilitate the competition.

In fact August is an auspicious month for entering competitions. Year 10 traditionally sit for The Australian Language Certificates. The results have recently been published with very pleasing results.

Congratulations to Sam Dale: High Distinction in Listening and Reading; Conor Bingham: High Distinction in Reading, Distinction in Listening; Matthew Lake and Andrew Girjes: Distinction in Listening and Reading; Connor Prince: Distinction in Reading; Joe Treston, Oliver Taylor, Michael Passlow, Ben Liversidge, Patrick Hollamby and Jamie Garrett: Distinction in Listening.

To round off a very busy term, Year 12 recently enjoyed an excursion to the Henri Cartier-Bresson Exhibition, as part of their module on Arts and Culture. Most were impressed with the scope of this world renowned French photographer but remarked on the bleakness and the poverty depicted. However, the visit was very much appreciated, as were the pains au chocolat.

As successful was the Year 9 Immersion Day on October 21, at the La Valla Centre and attended by many Brisbane schools. Activities and workshops were held and the students encouraged to speak in French throughout the day.

Parents have received a letter informing them of the 2012 French Exchange trip which is open to Years 10 and 11 students of 2012.

Thank you very much to those who have indicated they are interested. I will be organising details over the holidays and a meeting will be held in the new school year to finalise numbers.

MiSSioN @ MariST 2011As we move towards the season of Advent it is well to reflect on the year that was, a year of challenge and achievement. Points to note include:

• The graduating Year 12 class who completed more than 10,000 MATES hours of service to the community in their years in the secondary, with a total of 4894 hours this year alone; truly a wonderful achievement.

• Marist Asia Pacific Solidarity (MAPS)has congratulated the College for donations made to MAPS since 2002 totalling $102,834.13 which is an incredible commitment to our Marist neighbours over the decade. Total funds to MAPS this year was $15,000. These amounts do not include the various amounts raised for CARITAS, St Vincent De Paul and a number of other solidarity agencies to whom Marist College is committed. Sincere thanks to boys and families for this very significant commitment over a long time.

• The launch of the new MATES motto and logo for 2012 and beyond: “Faith to Believe, Courage to Do” which nicely captures the practical dimension of our Catholic, Marist faith which we try to teach and live at Ashgrove.

Thank you to the College Mission Team for their animation of Mission and Ministry at Marist College this year. Our Chaplain Fr Pius Jones sm has settled in well with boarders’ mass and the College sacramental program, together with his Year 10 CSYMA class. The boys have come to know Fr Pius as a man of great gentleness, presence and humour. Thank you to the Campus Ministers Mrs Mena McLean, Br Mark Fordyce and Mrs Caroline Smith for agency placements for the service program, for the immersions, liturgies, retreats, social justice awareness and a host of other activities. Mrs Smith will be moving into full time teaching in the secondary school in 2012 and I would like to thank her for her work in Mission, her support of the boys and her good humour in a busy school environment. Mrs Denise Freney has managed well the frenetic pace of life in the Mission/RE office and is deserving of our thanks and admiration for the way in which she has multi-tasked her way through the year. Head of Religious Education, Mrs Louise Underwood, in her first year in the role, has brought much dynamism and energy to the administration of RE in the secondary this year and has many plans afoot when the new Archdiocesan Program is to be introduced during 2012, keeping RE in line with developments in National Curriculum.

Finally, our thanks and congratulations to Mrs Yvonne Carrigan, administrative assistant in the Mission/RE office, who, after nearly 23 years, will be retiring at the end of this year. Yvonne has brought to the role great wisdom, faithfulness, spirituality and good humour. There have been few religious ceremonies or occasions at the College in the last 20 years which have not had some significant input from Yvonne. We are indebted to Yvonne for her commitment to the College and wish her every blessing for a long and fulfilling retirement.

Advent God, awaken us from our slumber,Shock us out of our apathy.Come, o come, Immanuel

Save your Australian people;Confront us afresh until all hearts are full

of the Word made flesh.

From the Deputy Head of School - Teaching and Learning“STRATeGIeS FoR SUCCeSS” SeMInARS In the January 2012 school holidays, Learning Performance will again be holding the popular 'Strategies for Success' seminars. There will be 4-day seminars for students in years 10, 11, and 12 and 2-day seminars for students in years 7, 8, and 9. Three main areas of learning are covered:

• Learning skills that help students to learn easier and more efficient methods of approaching study. These include organisational skills, essay planning, note taking, memory skills, and speed reading (speed reading in 4-day seminar only). • Motivation Skills. A close look at how self-motivation works. Learn how to get motivated and stay motivated. • Stress Management. Simple techniques for relieving stress, especially important at exam time.

Students leave the seminar with the skills needed to improve their ability to study, improve their school results, and make a success of their years at high school. Quality materials are used alongside films, group activities, and lectures. Investment in the 4-day seminar is $440 and the 2-day seminar is $240 (GST included). You are about to discover how, after only 6 hours attending one or more of our ics Holiday Skills Programs, students’ can change attitudes to their school work and study.Do you find in your student:

• There’s not enough time?• They don’t understand what to do?• They can’t write notes fast enough in class?• They ask why they go to school … what’s the point?• They read the same thing over and over?• Get stressed because they are expected to do better?

Music NewsQUeenSLAnD ConSeRvAToRIUMCongratulations to Nicholas Rossi, Oliver Lane-Porter, James Gatling and Luke O'Toole who in the last week have all been offered a place in the highly competitive Bachelor of Music course at the the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University. This tops off what has been another fantastic year for Music at Marist.

AShGRove MUSIC 2011While preparing a group back stage for the annual Winds & Percussion Concert in mid August I received the fantastic news that, later that same evening, Old Boy and recipient of the 1999 Parents and Friends Association Award for Conspicuous effort in Creative Arts Adrian Tully was performing with the Berlin Philharmoniker - one of the worlds most recognised and elite orchestras - to an audience of over 20,000. If you had asked me fourteen years ago, when Adrian was a member of the College’s Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Big Band 1, if I thought that some day he would achieve this accomplishment I would not have been confident that my answer would have been ‘yes’. This achievement, however, along with those of many other Old Boys who have gone on to perform on the world stage with artists such as James Morrison, Nigel Kennedy, The Ten Tenors and our own national orchestras, is clear evidence of the great musical culture that the boys experience here at Marist and beyond. The next morning at Symphony rehearsal I gave the current students the news of Adrian, stating that it did not seem that long ago that he was sitting in their seat and suggested that maybe one day they would be performing with the Berlin Philharmonic. By the looks in the eyes of some members of the group, I would now not be surprised if they do.

2011 will go down in Marist College Ashgrove’s music history as another highly successful performance year in which the culture of music has flourished. Numerous highlights included diverse range of high profile performances and several competition successes.

As usual, the Music year commenced with the traditional camp held at Alexandra Headlands on the first weekend back at school. Only a few weeks into the year performances were already underway, including the Inaugural Mass, Champagnat Trust Lunch and the Autumn Band, String and Choral concerts.

The undoubted highlight of Term 2 was the “Le Meilleur” concert, featuring our top groups in night of musical excellence. The standard of performance in all items was very high, with a memorable rendition of Star Wars excerpts featuring a guest appearance by Princess Leia and Darth Paul, complete with light sabers.

Other Term 2 performances included; the Winter and Guitar concerts with special guests from St Laurence’s College, the choirs competing in the Queensland Youth Awards, Battle of the Bands, Champagnat Day Mass, Grade 5 Band and Strings Concert, and the Junior Choral Concert at St Dympna’s Aspley.

In Term 3 the Marist Jazz Night featured all of the College’s Jazz Bands, as well as special guests “The Con Artists” featuring old boys Sean McKenzie, Luke Carbon and Brodie McAllister. Other performances includedthe Cathedral Concert, Junior String Day, and the Winds & Percussion Concert. It was also great to see record numbers of Marist musicians selected again for the Queensland Secondary honour Choir, the State Honours Program and G.R.I.P.P.S.

Term 4 saw the boys excel in multiple competitions across Brisbane. With Junior Strings awarded a Gold in their section of the Brisbane Band and String Festival. The performing year concluded for most groups with the annual Grandparents Day Concert and Soiree and finally the Year 6 & 7 classes, Old Boys and staff will perform tonight at Christmas carols for the College community. Thanks must go to Mr Craig Kennedy for his fantastic efforts in the co-ordination of the instrumental Music program and also in acting as Head of Music in my absence in Terms 1 & 2. Through his hard work in tandem with our Administration Assistant, Mrs. Jennifer Hutchinson, the administration and communication with staff and parents has continued to improve. The full time staff - Mrs Laura Kavanagh, Mrs Kellee Green, Mrs Catherine Wasserman and Miss Stefanie Smith - have selflessly given much of their time and talent to thedevelopment of the Music Department here at Marist and their help is most appreciated. Special thanks also to Mr Paul Kreisch who joined the faculty in Semester 1; in only a short time his enthusiasm left a big impression on all of his students. As always, the part time staff have continued to bring their great talents to the department and their input has been invaluable.

I must also thank Mr Peter McLoughlin for his personal support and the College staff and administration for all their encouragement throughout the year.

Finally, heartfelt thanks to all the students, and especially the Year 12 class of 2011, who were involved in the Music Department this year. Without the dedication, talent and enthusiasm that they have displayed in rehearsals, concerts and competitions throughout the year, the successes that we have enjoyed would not have been possible. It has truly been a pleasure again to work with such outstanding young men. Hopefully we may see some of you performing in Berlin in 2025.

O God of all beginnings and endings,We praise you for the gift of this school year. It has been a time filled with grace and blessings,With challenges and opportunities, joys and sorrows.

The days have passed quickly, O Lord. The weeks, the months, the seasons, the holidays and holy days,The exams, vacations, breaks and assemblies, All have come forth from your hand.

While we trust that your purposes have always been at work each day,Sometimes it has been difficult to understand and appreciateJust what you have been up to in our school.

Give us the rest and refreshment we need over the holidays.Let our efforts of this past year bear fruit.Bring all of our plans to a joyful conclusion,And bless us, according to your will,

With the fulfillment of our summer hopes and dreams.Watch over us in the weeks of rest ahead,And guide each day as you have done this past year. Help us to return to school with a new spirit and a new energy.

May we continue to growIn age, wisdom, knowledge and grace. All the days of our lives. St Marcellin Champagnat. Pray for usSaint Mary of the Cross. Pray for us.Mary Our Good Mother Pray for Us.And we always remember to pray for one another.Amen

MATeS MInISTRy- Faith to believe; Courage to do so.

On Thursday the 10th November at the last Mates Assembly for the year Mr. McMahon Head of Mission unveiled the new Mates Logo and banner.

Seven years since the beginning of the MATES program as we know it the Mission Team have been looking at what words define what we do in the MATES program at this College.

Champaganat’s faith allowed him to identify strongly with those young people, who needed education and care, faith and hope. Using courage and determination he created a vision and structure and the MATES program in this College is an enlivening of this vision.

The images that create the heart is the foundation of Marist – relationship of the heart. The words Faith to believe, and Courage to do defines the heart of this College.

RePoRT FRoM The CoLLeGe ChAPLAInThe education of young people is a most wonderful enterprise. As the year draws to a close we celebrate the achievements of many of our students and I am reminded of a quote I read at the Graduation Mass for our Year 12 students:

“We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work. Nothing we do is complete. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No set of goals and objectives includes everything.

This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities.”(Archbishop Oscar Romero)

The end of the school year, even though most are tired, is a really an opportunity to give thanks for the truly magnificent enterprise of which we are all a part: the holistic growth of young people.

Even though Advent has not yet started, Christmas will soon be upon us. I take this opportunity to wish you all a very safe, joy-filled and blessed Christmas.
