Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove family,

Welcome to the 2012 academic year and a very special welcome to all new members of our College family. In the two months since the last Newsletter, there have been many happenings throughout the world but one I would like to draw upon here. It involved an interview I saw on one of the television networks with a volunteer surf lifesaver. He was interviewed about the increase in the number of rescues that were being performed on our beaches. Why? Because most rescues took place outside the famous red and gold flagged area. He also commented on how people ignored requests by surf lifesavers to, “swim between the flags” and swam where they wanted to which necessitated rescues in most cases. Call me old fashioned, but I grew up understanding that surf lifesavers placed the flags at the safest part of the beach.

My point? Too many of us are self-professed experts, ignoring the advice of more qualified volunteers or professionals in certain situations. Two of my sons wanted to go swimming at Kirra Beach on Christmas Day. The swell would have been 3-4 metres and there were surf lifesavers on patrol forbidding people to go into the water. They were adamant that nobody was going into the surf and rightly so. It comes down to respect.

Respect is an expectation for all of us at Marist. The first letter from Peter urges people to live as people who belong to Christ, “Respect everyone, love other believers, honour God and respect the Emperor.” St Marcellin Champagnat drew on this example when he instructed his brothers on how they should treat one another – always with respect.

Mother Teresa once said, “There is always the danger that we may just do the work for the sake of the work. This is where the respect, the love and the devotion come in – that we do it to God, to Christ, and that’s why we try to do it as beautifully as possible.”

It’s what we expect here at Marist College Ashgrove. Our aim is to produce fine young men ready to take their place in twenty first century society and make a positive contribution to it. As St Marcellin said, “Good Christians and good citizens.”

May the 2012 academic year see our wonderful College soar from strength to strength.

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St Marcellin

Peter McLoughlinHeadmaster

As designated in the College calendar, and on other occasions arising from our membership of the Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) or Combined Independent Colleges (CIC). Co-curricular participation is required as part of the life of the College and integral to the growth and development of each student.Participation by all, according to the relative abilities of each student is mandatory. Marist tradition challenges us to care for all people. Established in 2005 The Champagnat Trust honours and expresses those traditions by providing bursaries for boys from families experiencing financial difficulties. Champagnat Trust bursaries enhance and celebrate the diversity of the College community and generate opportunities for students to make friends with boys from all walks of life. All proceeds of the Luncheon goes to The Champagnat Trust Bursary program.

With increased enrolments at the College this year, and more planned for 2015, traffic congestion on the campus, which has always been a source of concern for parents and staff, has now reached a significant level. The bottom line is that, during term time, the College is a pedestrian precinct. Students can be at risk from vehicles at the College especially from 7.30am to 9am and from 3pm to 3.45pm.

The College’s Workplace Health and Safety Committee has identified specific issues which need to be addressed as soon as possible. These are:

• Parent cars entering the property by crossing the Glenlyon Drive Bridge to drop off or pick up students at Main Administration or next to the Draney Theatre.

• Parent cars in the afternoons entering through the Moola Road but failing to wait at the designated pick-up area (or queuing down Moola Road towards Mirrabooka Bridge), blocking the round-about and the bus zone spaces.

There is no reason why any able-bodied student needs to be driven any closer than the Glenlyon Bridge or the Moola Road roundabout. The College will make special provision for other students on a needs basis.

The road up to the Junior School now has a boom-gate installed so that cars cannot drive where Year 5-7 boys are walking.

With many new parents, it is timely to remind everyone of the parking and traffic rules which apply in and around the College.

• The speed limit inside the grounds is 15 kph• The area between the boom gate at Main Administration and the gate at the roundabout is a

pedestrian precinct only whenever the boys are at school• Parking is available at the Glenlyon entrance near the pool• Drop-off and pickup of students in the afternoon is at the Moola Road entrance which is one way

in from Moola Road and exit at Frasers Road. Drop off should not occur outside Main Administration or outside the Draney Theatre. . If dropping off at the Glenlyon entrance parents are advised to stop before the bridge and have their sons walk up the hill.

• Parents must not pickup students at the bus stops between 3.00 and 3.45pm as there are several buses which must take precedence. This means that the front of the pick-up queue needs to be at the Moola Road entrance as shown below with nobody queuing across the roundabout.

• Many parents sensibly prefer to avoid coming on to the property at all and arrange for their sons to wait for them along the flats or along Frasers or Moola Road.

• In Moola Road there are some No Standing Anytime zones which must be observed. Some families were fined for parking illegally there last year.

• Students who drive must complete a Car Contract (obtainable from Student Administration) and must not drive on the College grounds at any time unless accompanied by a parent. Boys are discouraged from driving other students and boarders are never permitted to be driven by other students.

It is possible that there may be some changes to the traffic regulations along the roads nearest to the College. We are currently working with the Brisbane City Council and the local Councillor to see what may be possible. We will let you know if any changes are to occur and when.

Thank you for your co-operation with these rules which are designed for the safety of all students and staff at Marist College.

PAReNTS uNDeRSTANDINg ASIA LITeRACY

The MLTAQ is keen to engage parents in this endeavour via their school Languages teachers. Do you perchance have some keen parents who may be interested?

• The PUAL project is a collaboration between the Asia Education Foundation and, importantly, the Australia Council of State School Organisations – this already implies collaboration between school leadership and Asian language education circles.

• It is very much in teachers’ and students’ interests to build on this, especially as we head into Australian Curriculum implementation with the cross-curriculum priority of Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia, and with the general capabilities of literacy, personal and social competence and intercultural understanding in particular so central to our practice.

You may like to use the blurb below in a newsletter, or to pass it on specifically to identified parents in your context. Please also pass this on to other Asian language teachers in your networks.

Parents Understanding Asia Literacy

Registrations are open inviting parents from around Australia to participate in Parents Understanding Asia Literacy: Building demand for Asian languages and studies. The professional learning program is being conducted for clusters of Queensland schools in Semester 1 2012

Date: March 16

Aim: to build parents’ understanding of the importance of learning about Asia and Asian languages to increase career and life opportunities for their children.

Ian Dalton, Australian Parents Council executive director said. ‘We know that parents influence the subject choices students make. If they are appropriately informed and engaged they can also drive school curriculum choices and pathways that are best for their children.’

Registrations are available at: http://www.pual.org.au/

Assistant Head of School - Teaching and LearningEach new school year brings with it a sense of excitement and renewal as we celebrate the achievements of the past year and look forward to building upon them to achieve new goals. As the students of Marist College begin the year, I feel blessed to be able to join them on their educational journey. Seven years ago I entrusted the care and education of my own son to the College and since that time the academic, spiritual, social, cultural and sporting experiences and opportunities that are offered to students have only widened and deepened. There is without doubt something for every student to become involved in here at the College.

Many students require assistance to reflect on what has been achieved in the past and as the adults in their lives, it is important that we challenge the young men in our care to commit to a renewed sense of purpose, to learning and to achieving new goals.

Study Skills and goal Setting SessionsIt is with this in mind that a session on goal setting, organisation and study skills is offered to senior students on Monday February 13 in the Draney Theatre 6:30pm – 8:00pm. Interested students need to register at the Studies Office in the main Administration building by Wednesday February 10.

QCS PRePARATIoN Year 12 students will be engaged in preparation for the Queensland Core skills test or QCS over the coming year through a program of instruction and practice tests each Day 9. The main aim of the Core Skills program is to familiarise students with the skills, procedures and general requirements they will experience on the day of the tests. The program is designed to work in conjunction with a student’s chosen subjects to prepare them to manage and experience success with the types of questions which are a general feature of the tests each year.

This year the QCS tests will take place on the 4th and 5th September for all Year 12 students in Queensland. The results of these tests contribute group data for the calculation of OP rankings which means it is very important that all students are as well-prepared and as comfortable as possible with the format of the tests and the two days, before they undertake what may otherwise be a daunting task.

Equipment requiredIt is vital that all students have the correct equipment for both the preparation and the four tests in September. Please ensure you son has the following in a clear pencil case or plastic sleeve for each session:

JuNIoR SeCoNDARY STuDeNTSJunior secondary students require assistance at home in the areas of study and organisation. All boys need to use their diaries and term planners to record homework, assessment and draft due dates. Please check these often and assist your son to develop positive and regular study habits from the beginning of the year. Consistency is the key to success. Study time should not only include set homework but also the revision of class work and any possible pre-reading for the following day. General reading is of course highly beneficial and should be encouraged on a daily basis.

P&F NewsDear Parents, Welcome to another busy year at Marist College Ashgrove! We hope your family enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and a safe holiday.

Within the next two weeks you will receive a letter in the mail from the P&F outlining our goals and sub-committees as well as contact details for their convenors. We encourage you to join us - we are always in need of volunteers!

The envelope will also contain “fees raffle” tickets for your purchase. Should you choose to purchase these tickets and you are the lucky winner, your youngest son’s whole year’s tuition fees will be paid! For those who are returning to the College you may be aware that these raffles were formerly held in Terms 2 and 4, however following feedback from parents these will now be held in Terms 1 and 3 as a fund raising initiative for the College. It’s an easy way for you to actively support your P&F.

boARDeR’S SuPPoRTWelcome to the 2012 school year.

I hope you all enjoyed some quiet relaxation with your families over the Christmas break.

It was lovely to meet so many of our new boarding families when they returned to the College on Sunday 22nd January. We are close to capacity this year with 219 boarders and 43 new families. The boys come from as far away as Zambia and all corners of Australia and as you can imagine being so far away from home at such a young age can be very difficult. I would encourage your sons to get to know any boarders in their class and do what they can to make them feel welcome and part of the College family.

If you are interested in offering your support within the boarding community there are a number of ways to be involved - from transporting boys to appointments outside the College, sewing name tags on uniforms, providing food for the fortnightly afternoon teas, assisting with homework supervision, shopping for incidentals, transporting boys to weekend sporting fixtures or just simply inviting them home for a meal sometime. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like more information. I can assure you that the boys in our boarding community are absolutely delightful and extremely grateful for any support you are able to offer them.

For those ladies already on the roster, afternoon tea commences Friday 3rd February for Group 1. I look forward to seeing you there.

For Year 12 parents, the Senior Formal is coming SOON on March 10th. For the past few years we have held a Parent Dinner on Formal night straight after the pre-formal for both day and boarding parents. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents, sometimes for the first time and also to further strengthen relations between our day and boarding families.

Further information will be forwarded in the coming weeks and we hope you can join usI hope all of your sons are settling in well to the new school year and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you are interested in becoming involved in the boarding life of the College.

SPoRTS CANTeeNSThis Term there will be canteens in operation for swimming, cricket and volleyball. If your boys are involved in any of these sports could you please consider helping in these canteens for an hour or two during the games played on our home grounds.

The revenue raised from the previous two years in our canteens has gone to the new tennis courts and this year it will be put towards new cricket training nets. They are also a great way for new parents to meet other parents of our College community.

Swimming:Help is required for the cooking of sausages on the barbeque and serving of these and drinks etc.

If you are new to the College you might ask: What is the Marist Card Day? Well, the Card Day is a long-established College tradition that brings together over 120 card players from our own and surrounding communities for a day of cards and good times. Hosted by the P&F, Card Days are held once each Term on a Wednesday (dates are on the College Calendar) from 9.30am-2.00pm in the Brother Cyprian Pavilion. Our guests enjoy the day playing card games such as bridge, euchre and 500. We provide and serve a home-baked morning tea, serve sandwiches for lunch, hold raffles and run lucky door prizes throughout the day.

The success of our Card Days comes from the efforts and contributions from a band of volunteers made up from current and past Mums. You can volunteer to help serve on the day, donate a raffle prize, or bake something delicious. We’d love to welcome you as a Card Day volunteer...especially our New Junior School Mums. This is wonderful way to meet other Mums whilst contributing to the College community.

Music NewsWelcome all to what promises to be another exciting and productive year for the Music Department. In 2012 we have several exciting events planned including the biannual Blue & Gold concert to be held in June. In the next couple of weeks the Concert Calendar will be published giving detailed information on all Semester 1 concerts.

A reminder to all parents that information regarding all music activities for the year will be given via this page, the College Website, (music section), and in the newsletter. It is very important that both parents and students refer each fortnight to this page to keep up to date with events.

MuSIC LeSSoNSAny new Secondary or Junior school student who wishes to begin to play an instrument this year may enroll by returning the enrolment form that can be found in the Instrumental Music Handbook. The Instrumental Music Handbook can be downloaded from the College Web site or be obtained from the music centre. It gives full details of the music program at Marist and procedure for enrolment. Tuition is available on Voice, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Piano, Guitar, Bass Guitar, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Percussion, and Saxophone. At present we are especially looking for students to play the Tuba, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon and French Horn.

Also, any student who wishes to discontinue lessons this year must fill out a cancellation of enrolment form available from the music centre or downloaded from the music website (http://www.marash.qld.edu.au/music/info.html) and be returned as soon as possible.

Lessons for students have already commenced. It is very important that students check lesson times in the Music Centre and online on the Music website. If you have any queries please contact the Music Department on: [email protected]. Music lesson enrolments carry over from term to term and year to year and only cease once a cancellation form has been received.

STuDeNT AbSeNCeS1. It is the responsibility of the student/parents to notify the teacher of intending absences 24 hours

in advance. Upon notification the teacher will attempt to reschedule the lesson. Notification is best given in writing by sending an email to [email protected].

2. Lessons missed by students without 24 hours prior notice or adequate excuse will forfeit the cost of the missed lesson and the teacher will not be required to reschedule the lesson.

3. Where a student misses a lesson as a result of a College event (e.g. an excursion or an exam), the teacher will attempt to reschedule the lesson if a prior apology in accordance with the above has been given.

4. Students must have all relevant equipment, ie instrument and music, to attend their lesson. If a student does not have this equipment they will be sent back to their regular class and the lesson will be forfeited.

5. Notices are posted to parents if a student has missed two lessons without adequate excuses.

TuITIoN CoSTS FoR 2012In line with the minimum rates set by the Music Teachers Association of Queensland music fees will rise to the following in 2010:Individual lesson @ $32.50 per 30 minute lessonGroup Lessons @ $18 per 30 minute lessonGroup Theory @ $12 per 30 minute lesson (max 5 students)

NeW DATAbASeThis year sees the implementation of a new database for the Instrumental Music program. This will help us with the timetabling of over 500 lessons each week. However as with most things to do with computers, there may be glitches and we will iron these out as quickly as possible as they occur.

One major benefit of this database is the ability to email individual information for students. Each week an email will be sent to each family with a music schedule for your son for that week which will include their lesson time, ensemble rehearsals and sometimes other events that are happening in the College which may relate to them.

LeSSoNS AND eNSeMbLeSOn Wednesday in week 1, Craig Kennedy (Coordinator of Instrumental Music) spoke to the boys about lessons and ensemble rehearsals. Some of the important points were:

• All lessons and ensemble rehearsals commence next week.

Page 21: Marist College Ashgrove Newsletter

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

Music News Continued...

• Morning rehearsals start at 7.30am but please arrive at 7.20am for setup.• The student must fill out the music lesson record at the back of the diary each week when they

receive their lesson time for the coming week. This is then to be shown to their classroom teacher who will give them permission to leave class. If the time is not listed in the diary, the classroom teacher may not give a student permission to leave.

• Diaries must be brought to every lesson. Students will be sent to get them if they arrive without a diary.

• As well as this email, timetables are also available on the Music website and noticeboards in the Music Centre and Junior School.

• Lessons will usually be kept on the same weekday but during the term times could change within that day to avoid clashes with the same academic class.

• All students learning at the College must play in an ensemble.• New students to the College will be automatically placed into an ensemble. During the first few

weeks of lessons and rehearsals, students may be moved to a more suitable ensemble.

CoMMuNICATIoNIf you have any concerns or questions about the instrumental program, please feel free to contact us at any time.

MuSIC CAMP 2012Last Friday, over 110 music students and staff departed for Alexandra Park, Alexandra Headlands, on the annual start-of-the-year Music Camp. Members of the College’s Chamber Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber & Senior String Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, El Mariachi and Big Band 1 all were involved in the intensive small group and large ensemble rehearsals to hone their skills for the numerous performances this year.

The camp was a great success with all ensembles producing some fantastic musical results early in the year as well as having a great time including ten-pin bowling on the Saturday night. 2012 looks to be a great year with a record number of students involved in both instrumental and choral ensembles. Thank you to the boys and staff, especially Mr. Craig Kennedy, Mrs. Laura Kavanagh, Mrs. Catherine Wasserman, Miss Stephanie Smith, Mrs. Kellee Green, Mr. Will Eager, Mr. Sean McKenzie, Mrs. Deborah Davis, Mr. Nicholas Hollamby, Mr. Gerard McFadden, old boys Andrew Doo and Nathan Hearn and new music staff member Miss Katherine Gavrinich who kindly gave their time on what turned out to be a most successful camp. Also a special thanks to Mrs. Jennifer Hutchinson for helping with the organization of the camp and finally thanks to the boys for their hard work and musical performance on camp.

NeWS FRoM THe CoLLege CHAPLAIN

It really does get into your blood! Every school has its own culture and spirit. Marist Ashgrove is quite unique. What is it about Marist College that really grabs hold of a person? I think if we asked the boys, staff and parents they would all answer this question in a slightly different way but I also suspect that there would be some common threads.

My thoughts are that when the young Father Champagnat was developing his ideas about the education of the young, he wanted schools to be very different from his own experience of schooling. The education of the young for Saint Marcellin was more than just the pouring in, or pouring out of knowledge, it was to be a place of faith and learning, of welcome and family, of simplicity and hard work, of respecting and treasuring the uniqueness of each individual person.

During the school holidays I had the privilege of going to Cambodia on Immersion. For me it was one of the most significant experiences in my life. You will read about the Immersion elsewhere but I simply want to say just how impressed I was with the young men who travelled with us. Their behaviour during the whole time we were there was filled with the Marist spirit: family, hard work, reflection and prayer, inclusiveness and a sense of fun. We often hear a lot of criticism of the young, however I was left with an overwhelming sense that if there are more young men like these boys, the future of our world is in very safe hands.

As the New Year begins, I wish you all every good wish and blessing. If at any stage I can be of assistance, please feel welcome to contact me.

Yours in Jesus and Mary,Fr Pius Jones SMCollege Chaplain

MINISTRY IN ACTIoNCambodian Immersion 2011"A hot and humid adventure in a country far away. On face value those would be the words many would use to express the Cambodian Immersion of 2011, but to the nine Year 11 students and the three staff members who accompanied us as we experienced the amazing Cambodian culture, it meant so much more. Our experience was so much more than a mere "trip", rather it was a journey for each and every one of us. Beginning our travels in the capital of Phnom Penh we attended a small school, Salla Lavalla, run by Marist Brothers, to teach English and interact with the kids. I will never forget my hand being taken on our first day visiting as I was lead through the school by a child about hip-height, who I had never met before as he smiled his little head off. The generosity, friendliness and smiles of these beautiful Cambodian students did a great deal to hide their numerous and tragic disabilities, some cause by landmines and many born with Polio, but the boys and staff were stunned by their immense gratitude for what little they had. Not to mention they are incredibly capable despite their handicaps, beating us in any sport from basket all, to arm wrestles, to volleyball! The school in Phnom Penh being only a small part of the immersion, we continued our travels in Cambodia after an amazing week spent with the kids, and we experienced the same warm and happy nature from everyone we encountered. As we met many amazing people in Cambodia, including some Marist brothers, and after seeing the huge difference they make in the lives of many, I think I can speak for the whole group when I say that our lives were enriched permanently. Our sense of mission as Marists has been significantly reinvigorated and we have all taken a great deal away from our immersion experience in Cambodia 2011. It has been a life changing experience for all involved and we are grateful to have been honoured with such an experience." - Lincoln Farmer, year 11 2011.

NeWS FRoM MISSIoNA very warm welcome to a new look Mission Team for 2012. Let me introduce Mrs Liz Spry who has joined our team as full time administration support. Mrs Spry will be working very closely with MATES and Br Mark and Mrs McLean. We welcome back Mrs Denise Freney who will continue her work with MISSION support. Welcome back also to Br Mark Fordyce and Fr Pius Jones, Mrs Mena McLean, Mr Michael Connolly and Mrs Louise Underwood. With Caroline Smith returning to the classroom, and the retirement of Mrs Yvonne Carrigan at the end of 2011, the staffing in the MISSION and MATES areas has definitely changed!

In Mr Luke McMahon’s absence for Term 1, I am acting in his role as Head of Mission. Thus far, we have celebrated a staff Mass, Commencement Liturgies for all Year levels and are planning our Inaugural Mass for 7 February. With Ash Wednesday on 22 February, we are also planning our Caritas fundraising ventures for the school, hoping to raise $15,000 for our MAPS work. MATES is well and truly underway and we encourage all boys to visit the Campus Ministry office to sign up for the extensive MATES activities available to them.

This year, to streamline our Newsletter inclusions, we will not be publishing any upcoming rosters. Those rosters are readily available for viewing in the Campus Ministry Office. We will continue to publish the names of those who have recently attended MATES agencies with any accompanying photographs. Please feel free to contact Mrs Denise Fry or Mrs Liz Spry for any further information.

NeWS FRoM CAMPuS MINISTRYMarist Student Leaders Seminar Day

On the 23rd of January, a group of twenty Year 12 students attended the 2012 Marist Student Leaders Seminar Day. The Seminar Day commenced in the afternoon, just after the Year 11 leadership group attended a similar program.

Lead and run by Br. Tony Leon and assisted by Br. Mark Fordyce, the twenty boys discussed the particular issues of Marist Presence and good example, peer ministry responsibilities, Marist leadership and participation at the College and personal giftedness.

The group of twenty students will form the 2012 Student Forum group and work on issues to help benefit the College community both short term and long term.

The Seminar Day has helped prepare the Year 12 leadership group for their final year at the College and with the help of the whole Year 12 student body, it looks to be a successful and eventful year.

STuDeNT PRoFILe Name: Riley Wilkes – College Captain 2012

House: Ignatius

Favourite School Subject: English

Most enjoyable Recreational Activity: Visiting our family farm, travelling to the country and the beach, playing the Xbox occasionally, participating in volleyball & rugby.

Biggest Influences: The loss of my Father in 2007 & the wonderful Marist education I have received at Ashgrove

Role Models: My Father, Josh Conroy the 2008 College Captain, Mr Gerard Monsour, Br Mark Fordyce & Fr Pius Jones as well as other staff from Marist Ashgrove.

goal for 2012: To do the best I can in my studies and as College Captain. Involvement in as many co-curricular activities as I can & make the most of the opportunity to have a Year 12 Marist education.

Ambition: At this point and time I would like to do a gap year after school, jackarooing on a property in Queensland then to study agricultural Science or the like at uni. My ultimate dream would be to own a property, have a family, enjoy life and be the best person I can be.

Favourite ‘Marist’ Moment: I don’t think I could pick one particular moment, but the immersion to Santa Teresa Indigenous community last year was definitely one of the greatest experiences of my life. Visiting that community and experiencing some of their culture was a great eye-opener and very enriching.

Achievements: I have received several Optimus and MATES awards. In 2008, a group of Ashgrove students, including myself, won a computer competition. I would consider making the 16C rugby team a great personal achievement. The greatest achievement of all would have to be being appointed College Captain.

Favourite Quote: It was difficult to try to find and choose one favourite quote. One that I am quite fond of and try to live by comes from the bible in Micah 6:8 “Hear then what God asks of you: To live justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God.”

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2011

Dear Parents, Staff and boys,

This is our first Newsletter for 2012. As you are aware, the ‘Junior News’ is part of the College Newsletter, which is available on the College Website. A quick reminder that it’s important to view the entire College Newsletter so you have an idea of what is happening throughout the College. It’s a great pleasure for me to welcome each Junior School family to the start of the 2012 school year. Special mention and welcome to all the new families to the College this year. There are many of you and we are delighted that you have joined the Marist family.

At the beginning of the Newsletter, I wish to remind all parents that if there is anything that we can do to assist you, please make contact with us, through the Junior School office. It’s very important to make contact with us if your son is not settling or is struggling during the first few weeks. We can assist you, and this kind of communication really assists us in the day-to-day running of the Junior School. It also provides a more personal insight into how each of our boys is settling and if we do need to communicate with individual boys, this is always done in a confidential and nurturing manner. I usually mention this to the class teacher in the first instance and if needed, to the other teachers who teach that particular boy. This process is always done with the support and permission of the parents.

Each year, the Marist Brothers’ Province provides a theme for all Marist Schools in Australia. This year, the theme is “Eyes Opened, encounter hearts burning.” The theme is based on the story in Saint Luke’s Gospel 24 : 13-35, which describes a beautiful scene.

Two of Jesus’ disciples are walking to a small village, about 7 miles from Jerusalem, called Emmaus. They are deep in conversation, discussing the traumatic events which led to the death of Jesus of Nazareth. As they walk, they are joined by a man who enquires what they are discussing on the road and the two disciples are surprised that the man has not heard about the happenings in Jerusalem. The man joins them in the conversation and walks with them to the village. As they approach Emmaus, the man continues to walk, but the two disciples invite him to join them for a meal, as night was falling. The man agrees and as they share the meal, the two disciples suddenly recognise that the man they have been talking with is Jesus. They are astounded and immediately set out again, back to Jerusalem, to share their good news with the followers of Jesus.

The Gospel describes the scene in these words: “…and their eyes were opened and they recognised him, but he had vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road to us and explained the scriptures to us?’ They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem.”

What relevance has this story for us today? Why have the Marist Brothers requested that we consider these words in 2012?

The answers, I believe, lie in the important fact that as Christians and as Marist educators everything we do must be firmly set in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ teachings are what should be in the forefront of all we do here at Marist College and should energise and challenge us each and every day. Although we fail daily, the challenge still needs to be before us. Just as the disciples’ hearts ‘burnt within them’ so must ours as the teachings of Jesus do take us out of ourselves and point us in the direction of the other person.

I would hope and pray that, in 2012, we, as a Staff and community, can assist the boys to experience the life giving effect of the person of Jesus in their lives. I hope that the boys will come to realise, as they make their way through this great College, that the person of Jesus is challenging, but also liberating and that their hearts ‘can burn within them’ as well.

Junior School News Continued...

At the start of the school year, there are always some important notices for your information:

Welcome to the new Class Teachers for 2012:Due to the additional classes in the Junior School this year, there are 6 new class teachers and to help you get to know the Staff, there is a photograph and short summary for each Staff member. I am absolutely delighted with the way the new Staff have settled into their new environment and each one has brought energy, new ideas and youthfulness, which, for oldies like me, is so refreshing, enlightening and positive. When interviewing for new staff, I always think of how the boys will relate to the person being interviewed and the importance of the boys having good role-models at school. I am very fortunate, therefore, to introduce to you the new class teachers for 2012: Miss Alyce Deeley: [Year 6 gold]Alyce is from Lismore and is a past student of the Marist Brothers’ School, Trinity Catholic College in Lismore. Marist College Junior School is Alyce’s first appointment and she is very excited and grateful for this great opportunity. I have been very impressed with Alyce’s dedication and hard work, ensuring that her classroom is ready for the start of the new school year and for the quiet and happy way in which she is going about her daily tasks.

Mr Paul knight: [Year 7 White]Paul comes to Marist College from Eaton’s Hill SS and is an Old Boy of Padua College. Prior to going to the UK to teach, Paul taught at Padua College from 2002 to 2005, in Year 5 and Year 7. Paul is looking forward to being back in an all-boys Catholic College and putting some of the experiences learnt over the years into practice. Paul is very interested in many sports and has a great sense of humour, which will go down very well in his Year 7 classroom.

Mr John Lambourne: [Year 6 blue]John is also from Lismore, and is a past student of the Marist Father’s College in Lismore, Woodlawn College, where John was a Boarder. John has travelled extensively, spending 10 Years in the UK and Europe and teaching English in Taiwan. John came to Marist College in 1999 as a Boarding Supervisor and has done Contracts and Supply Teaching in both the Senior and Junior Schools. This Year, John is working in the Year 12 boarding residence and from the above you will realise that John brings a great deal of experience and expertise into his classroom and his classroom is always a very happy place!

Miss Prue o’Neill: [Year 6 green]Prue comes to us from Saint Thomas’ School at Camp Hill. Prior to this, Prue was teaching in the American International School in Hong Kong for a year and in Catholic Education Schools. Prue has had many different experiences in her 9 years of teaching and looks forward, with great enthusiasm, to beginning her time at Marist College. Prue is an outgoing and warm person and I know that the boys will respond to her presence.

Mr Christopher Rynders: [Year 7 Red]Chris is an Old Boy of Marist College, from Year 5 to Yea r 12 and is very pleased to be back at the College. Paul has had a great range of teaching experiences, Longreach SS and The School of Distance Education in Longreach. Paul came to us from Milton SS, where he was very involved in getting the school back on its feet after the floods of 2011. Chris is a gifted sportsman and is very keen to share his expertise with the boys in the Junior School. Chris has a quiet presence within the classroom and the boys in his care will benefit from the vast experiences Chris will bring.

Mr Dean Williams: [Year 7 gold]Dean is also an Old Boy of Marist College, from Year 5 to Year 12 and was taught by Mr Simon in Year 6 and Madame taught Dean French! Dean is replacing Peter De Voss for Semester 1, while Peter is on Long Service Leave and it’s wonderful to have another Old Boy of the College on our Staff. Marist College is Dean’s first appointment as a young teacher and is delighted to be back at his old school. Dean has worked very hard in getting everything ready for the return of the boys and he will be a wonderful role-model for the boys in his care, with his quiet and gentle nature.

In the next ‘Junior School News’ I will introduce our new Japanese teacher to you, Ms Hannah Neilson, the 2 Specialist Art teachers, who will be taking the Year 7 classes for Art in 2012, Ms Katy Ward and Ms Megan Wandell and also Mrs Meredith Erbacher, the new Teacher Librarian.

DRAMA CLASSeS: WeDNeSDAY 1 FebRuARY 2012:All families would have received information concerning the Drama classes, which are offered in the Junior School as a co-curricular, each Wednesday afternoon, from 3.30-5.45pm. If you did not receive this information, or would like to have something clarified, please contact me. The information was attached to the documents you received at the beginning of this year. For new boys wishing to participate in Drama, their parents should have made contact with the Drama teacher, prior to Wednesday 1 February 2012. I will speak with the boys about this and accompany them to the venue on Wednesday afternoon. Drama begins on WEDNESDAY 1 FEBRUARY 2012.

CHeSS LeSSoNS: FRIDAY 3 FebRuARY, 2012:Thank you to the families who have indicated that their sons will participate in Chess. I have received 22 responses, mainly from Year 5 parents. Lessons begin on Friday 3 February, from 7.30-8.30am, in the Junior School Computer Room. This is a wonderful opportunity for the boys as we have a very experienced Coach, Mrs Connie Pizzato, who is from Somerville House and many of the Senior boys join us to assist. If there are any questions, please let me know.

THe uSe oF ‘buCkeT-HATS’ IN THe JuNIoR SCHooL:There has been some confusion regarding the wearing of bucket-hats, so I will clarify this for you:

(1) Bucket-hats can be worn by the Junior School boys each Wednesday, with their sport uniform. This, however, is not compulsory and the College hat can be worn with the sport uniform. Bucket-hats are NOT worn in the Senior School.

(2) Bucket-hats will cease in the Junior School, once the stock has been sold. This might take 1 or 2 years.

(3) Bucket-hats are NOT WORN WITH THE GREY COLLEGE UNIFORM, only in emergencies, like at the moment, as there is a delay with the naming of the College hats.

e-MAIL AND CoNTACT DeTAILS:Another important reminder: Please inform the Junior School office if there are any changes to your contact details, especially e-mail addresses. We keep very accurate records and most of the communication from the Junior School is now done electronically.

CRICkeTWelcome to the 2012 Cricket Season. Our trials have been interrupted by the unrelenting rain over the past week or so, which has made the start of our season quite difficult. Despite this, a full season draw will be posted on the College website by the end of the week and will contain every detail concerning C.I.C. cricket and the venues for each team.

A couple of important points to keep in mind this cricket season:-• For health reasons, each boy needs his own protector.• All boys representing the College in Cricket must play in the College white long sleeved shirt and

have white long pants to compliment this attire. • Sun safety is of paramount importance. Ensure sunscreen is applied at all fixtures. • Each boy must have his own water bottle at every match.• Helmets must be worn while batting and keeping up to the stumps. This directive will be enforced

throughout the season.• Students must field in a College broad brim hat.• All cricket information will be placed on the College website. It can be accessed by clicking on

‘Junior Sport’ and then ‘Cricket’• Information regarding all weekend sport can be heard on the Sportsline – 3858 4688 or accessed

through the College website on www.marash.qld.edu.au • Cancellations and sports directives can be found on twitter – http://twitter.com/MCAJUNIORSPORT

FRoM THe SWIM CoACH – Mr Andre Cois While most sports have taken a break over the holidays, the swimming program has continued intensely with a large number of boys committing much time and effort to training for the upcoming 2011 CIC swimming season. Well done to all those boys who made the commitment to swimming over the holidays and trained so exceptionally well. Your hard work in training has not gone unnoticed and I know you will all swim very well when it comes time to race!

The Junior School Swim Camp was held at the College on January 12-13 and was attended by 75 swimmers. The boys participated in a number of team building activities which included a night at Laser Force which proved very beneficial in enhancing the already evident positive team atmosphere amongst our CIC team. The swimmers (and coaches!) had a fantastic couple of days and I hope all who attended not only had fun but learnt a thing or two through their experiences.

Although we have seen some great results already this season, it is very important that we don't become complacent with ourselves and rest on our laurels. The improvement in all of our swimmers has been absolutely outstanding and has exceeded all expectations at this stage. However this allows us to now raise the bar in terms of achieving our best possible results, and with only about FIVE WEEKS left to go until the CIC Swimming Championships, we will now be entering the hardest phase of our training in the lead up to the concluding and most important swim meet of the season. Training over the last 17 weeks has been outstanding; however as a squad we need to lift our training to another level to ensure that we gain the best possible results at the CIC meet. Let us leave no stone unturned as we search for more ways to ensure that we all swim as fast as we can on the day! Remember, our goal is for each of us to swim as fast as we possibly can to gain our best results for the greater benefit of our team - Marist College Ashgrove. Let’s not forget that swimming at Marist College Ashgrove is a TEAM sport, and so we need to work together as a team to achieve our goals.

If you are seeking information about swimming please check the College website as all information about the season can be found either on the Junior School swimming home page or by downloading the Junior School Swimming Handbook.

TeNNIS CoACHINgAny boy wishing to take private tennis lessons should contact Alan Say who is part of Pro-Am Tennis. 6A bASkeTbALL SuCCeSS – Report by Will Ryan On the 2nd and 3rd of December the Year 6A basketball team took part in an interschool basketball tournament at the BBI.

The team was made up of Tom Carroll, Sam Jury, Josh Horswill, Matt Richards, Ben Fracchia, Matt Dangerfield, Tom Dangerfield, Will Ryan and Simon Forbes. The team was fortunate to have Nick Fracchia

for their coach and Mrs Richards as manager. Even though the tournament was in the holidays the boys showed commitment and trained hard to give their best.

This competition was very tough with Marist College coming up against Brisbane Grammar and Indooroopilly State School the first afternoon. One look at those teams had the Marist boys shaking in their boots but once the game started and the boys settled into it they came out with wins from both matches. Saturday started with the 3rd pool game against St Eugene’s College. While they were a worthy opponent the Marist boys showed great skills and won. This meant entering the finals in an undefeated position which gave the boys a lot of confidence. The match against BBC proved to be more challenging. Being the fourth game in 2 days the boys were starting to tire. The scores were very tight through the whole game but again Marist was able to end with the win.

This meant they were into the Final against Sheldon College. Like Marist the Sheldon Team had been undefeated throughout the tournament. In what was a nail-biting game for the spectators with the scores being neck and neck the whole way. Marist was able to hang on and managed a 6 point win.

They were very excited to be the overall winners of the Year 6 Basketball competition for BBI for 2011.

SWIMMING CAMP – Report by Tom & Matt DangerfieldOn the 12 January at 9 o'clock 71 junior swimmers from Marist all met in the Cyprian for the Junior School swim camp. There was Mr Cameron, Mr Green and Mr Cois (the swimming coaches) and 5 seniors, Smiley (Jack Bendall), Gero (Sam Geraghty), Cookie (Jordan Cooke), Trubby (Matt Trubshaw) and Xavier (Devlin) who were there to guide us through the camp.

The camp began with team building exercises in the Cyprian, like communication (i.e. getting to know the other new kids). After lunch, we started on Dodge ball in the gym where we split into teams - another team building exercise where Trubby dominated the juniors. We were joined at afternoon tea with the younger Mr Cois (Ayrton) who helped the other coaches with the intense swimming session which concentrated on stroke correction for Breaststroke and Butterfly. All our new swimmers joined in well with the team.

Before dinner, we met on the main oval for free time, where most of the boys played cricket. After dinner, all of us were excited about going to laser force. We booked out the whole place just for the Marist swim team. It was epic when everyone played and joined forces against each other. By the time we all got home it was 11:00pm and most of the boys went to sleep straight away however some had the company of Mr Cameron.

On Friday, We got ready for breakfast and it was quite nice with sausages, eggs, bacon, spaghetti on toast and baked beans. Then it was time to get some togs on and go down to the pool for another session. This time we worked on Backstroke and Relay change overs and there was a false start by a senior in the demonstration (Cookie).

After swimming we had morning tea, which was then followed by the packing up of all our gear. After that we had another session of free time on the oval and then it was lunch. By this time most of the boys were starting to feel tired. We settled into the afternoon and watched last year’s CIC swimming video. That made us determined to put everything into our training sessions and hope for a better result this year.

After the movie ’The Blind Side' it was time to go home, we were all very exhausted and our parents were all eager to pick us up.

Special thanks must go to all the coaches and seniors for their time and commitment to the junior swim team. Without their support and dedication, the camp would not have been possible.

INDIvIDuAL ACHIeveMeNTSLast year Christopher Banning was selected to represent Queensland (Metro) at the National Futsal titles 2012. These titles took place in Sydney in January 2012. The Queensland Metro team (10 year old boys) won the titles undefeated; subsequently Christopher’s team is the National Champions in his age group. Well done Chris on this achievement.

From the Head of SportWelcome back boys, parents and staff from what was hopefully an enjoyable, relaxing and refreshing Christmas holiday. Given the long break, I imagine boys are eager and ready to embark on another exciting AIC season.

Whilst the rest of us were away relaxing, the ground staff were hard at work preparing for the 2012 sporting seasons with a number of projects:

1) The complete overhaul of Cameron Oval including irrigation, sub-surface drainage, laser grading of outfield and of wicket block (If you haven’t yet seen it, it is a sight to behold from the cliff top next to the round about).

2) Top soil, weeding and some well needed TLC of both Hayden and McMahon ovals. Whilst there is still some work to do, both Mcmahon oval and Hayden ovals are looking great and will only continue to improve each week.

3) The construction of the Synthetic Sports Centre on the site of the old Junior School Car Park. This facility was due to be completed this week; however, has been delayed due to the recent weather. Once we have a decent spell of dry weather, the astro-turf will be laid in the main areas and rebound ace cricket surface laid in the nets ready for use. With the ability to be used for cricket training, HPE, Junior school sport, Football training and even Rugby training, the Synthetic Sports Centre will be a welcome addition to the MCA training facilities.

4) The laying of a specialized flooring in the weights room to better suit the needs of this facility as well as the addition of new weights. Over the next few months, the weights room will go through a further face lift with some of the old equipment being replaced and the room being re-painted and some multimedia being added.

5) The replacement of the iconic white fence surrounding McMahon oval. (In order to do this, the concrete drainage at the base of the grandstand needed to be ripped up – hence the construction fencing. – This section is due for replacement in the next few weeks).

6) The re-lacquering of the gym floor.

These additions/improvements should ultimately mean better training facilities and opportunities for the boys and I would like to thank Mr Ian Saunders, Mr Craig Anderson, Mr Russell Randle, and Mr Dan Conway for providing the energy and expertise to see the projects underway.

Sincerely, Mr Phillip HoldingHead of Sport

uNIFoRMIn order to start the year well, boys are reminded about the expectations when representing the College in sport:

ACCeLeRATIoN – NoW FRee!Due to the popularity of the Acceleration, the benefits it provides students and the long term gains associated with a well-planned and implemented strength program the College has made the decision to fully fund the Acceleration program so that it is free of charge to all students.

Boys wishing to participate are still required to register online and can do so at the following website:https://www.accelerationesp.com/enrolForm.cfm?form_id=449

Given the popularity of this program, and that now it is free of charge, it is anticipated that there will be a high demand for the limited number of spaces available.

With this in mind, both boys and parents are advised of the following expectations:- Boys who are not enrolled in the acceleration program are not permitted to train in the weights

room. Boys will be given till the end of week two to register, at which point acceleration staff will turn boys away who are not on their rolls.

- Boys who sign up to the program are expected to attend all sessions they have signed up for. In the event that a session is missed, boys must notify the acceleration coaches (preferably beforehand).

- Boys are expected to behave in a safe and appropriate manner at all times an in lines with the College weight room rules and any instructions given by College or Acceleration coaches.
