Tuesday 1 January (First two days empty, filled here by notes from back

of 1888 diary) Still v. foggy. Poor baby Hamilton buried at Winchester

today, Lin gone to it. Dreadfully cold damp & foggy, hope he will be all

right. Sp. came to lunch. Laurence & I did cellar & bottled, or rather

unbottled, into barrel 3½ doz whiskey. Mr Guthrie sent Maud charming

book of W. Crane & Roy huge box of soldiers, chicks delighted, writing

to thank him. Ham never gave them any lunch at Winchester. Lin took

Mervyn & had some at Inn. Went to dinner Mrs a’Beckett. Lin came in

middle of dinner looking perished with cold. A’B’s very kind but bad

dinner. Met a’B. Tyrells.

Wednesday 2 January

Dull & slightly foggy. Went out morg. shop’g, bought Lin’s (illeg), for

chicks carbolic, serge & candle shades. Lin’s cold v. heavy. Chicks out

morg. long walk. Dismantled tree after lunch. Chicks v. happy in nursery

all afternoon, roulette evg. Lin to Punch dinner, carriage fetched him,

made gruel, fire in our room. Sorted all my old dresses etc.

Thursday 3 January

Mrs Messel’s children’s party 8 o’c. Dull, slightly foggy. Mrs S. out morg.

Paid Madame B £20, Furzecott £1.12 & Marshall & Snelgrove £1.11.8 by

cheque, also pd. Cullen 9/- window at Blackburn, Ramsgate, 7/6 for hire

of chest of drawers for stables, Huish 3/9 cleaning stays & Tisdall 4/2 for

cleaning. Chicks out morg. Lin preparing for Punch drawing on paper.

Tabs & Ham to tea. H. had game chess with Roy & Roy beat him. Mrs

Sheehy called, cannot make any arrangement to take Mrs S, v. sorry.

Maud went alone to Mrs M’s, wore red dress & looked v. sweet. Lin

fetched her. Fire in our room.

Friday 4 January

Lin hard at work on paper drg. Maud in bed to breakfast, seems none the

worse for her party. Horrible dream about Nana. Tabbie & Ham & Con &

Eff to tea. No, C & E to tea - I drove up to Ogles & saw Tab & Ham.

Saturday 5 January

Mrs Boughton at home 5- 7. Private view of old masters at R. Academy.

Lin & self went up by brougham to Academy, foggy very. Most

interesting pictures, Van Steens, Musscher, Romney, Raphaels & poor

F. Holls. Lunched at St James’ & on in cab to Terry’s Theatre where

Minnie & chicks joined us, also Mr Guthrie. Most delightful

entertainment & how Minnie laughed! Lin & Roy walked home, Mrs S. &

self drove. Sp. called & said the Estate had not sold all B. A. Gt.

Southern shares, think he is mistaken. Quiet evg. Sat in morg. room,

sweetly pretty but most uncomfortable.

Sunday 6 January

Dull, bitterly cold & slightly foggy. Lin took 2 chicks for walk, too cold

for church. Lin went after in dog cart to Mr Barker’s Wimbledon. Con,

Eff, Tab, Ham & Sp. to dinner 7.30. Roy & Maud & Mrs S. also down. Very

jolly evg. H. sang, Sp. stayed v. late.

Monday 7 January

Dull & foggy. Lin walked up to Club, met chicks & self at Covent Garden

Theatre, Hanglers Circus. V. v. foggy in London. Good performance &

home safely, Lin walked. Dear Roy had a severe fall morg, knocked his

nose violently in Hall. Jolly fetched Tabbie’s pretty flower basket from

Hotel. Quiet evg. Lin v. rampant! morg & evg.

Tuesday 8 January

Lady Freake’s invite to her Box at Albert Hall for the Patti concert.

Actually fine morning. Shop’g morg. After lunch Mrs Gaston, Olive, Miss

Buschman called, & Pattie Wood came to lunch. Very jolly evg. at Hall.

Sat next to Lady Hardman & Miss Brandham. Mr & Mrs Kendal & a

number of others there, Miss Young etc. Dear Roy’s nose & eye v. much

swollen.

Wednesday 9 January

Mrs Leech’s children’s party 6 o’c. Mrs Orton’s children’s party 6 o’c.

Mrs Eykyn’s dinner ¼ to 8. Mrs Jopling Rowe’s at home 9.30. Lovely day

& quite warm. Sent Roy with Jolly to see Dr Orton as his eye & face look

v. bad fr. fall, gave him some medicine. Took chicks for walk myself into

Gardens, Tony also. Lin rode to Hampton Court. I tidied drawers etc.

Had letter fr. Fred Watkins about poor Mrs Linley’s death, v. grieved.

Very pleasant evg. at Mrs Eykyns, met Barkers & Parishes. Mr Tuedly(?)

took me in, handsome wife asked me to call, 21 Pk. Lane.

Thursday 10 January

Cinderella dance at Princes Hall 8 o’c. Mrs Stokes’ dinner 7 o’c,

postponed. Very wet sultry morg. Books in very heavy, 10 to dinner

Sunday. To tea at Mr Parsons’ to meet Mrs Millet. Mr Burnand bothering

Lin with 3 subjects. Pouring wet. Lin & self went to Mr Parsons, met Mrs

Millet, distinctly pretty but something I don’t like in her. Mr Roller &

Harold there, Beatrice going to be married to her cousin Adrian Hope!

Alma & Mrs Tadema, Alexanders & a heap of others there. Quiet here,

Lin worked. Heard of Mrs Robert Linley’s death at Treeton(?)

Friday 11 January

Finish day. Lin busy at work 3 drawings in one day!!! Too much. Did

good many odd jobs ought to have done long ago. Chicks out twice.

Heard of poor Hermina’s husband’s death, sudden. Drove to Stores, met

Olive, heard Tabbie was in town again! Called on Mrs Lucy just starting

for Hythe & went on to Metropole Hotel, found Mrs Stokes in her night

dress - room awfully untidy, general muddle, wonder how anyone can

live in such a state.

Saturday 12 January

Lin doing 3rd block. Barkers horse sent, muddle, Jolly had to take him

back again. Took chicks to Savoy. Mr Guthrie met us there, delightful

piece, chicks delighted. Sp. called & v. worried, did not see him. Turned

out cupboards etc with Minnie in nursery.

Sunday 13 January

Mrs Alexander’s at home 10.30. Lin rode to see Barker’s horse,

coachman tried him with Lin. Roy & M St Matthias with Minnie. Read to

them after lunch. Mr Ellis called.

Monday 14 January

See governesses before one o’c. Lady Freake at home 4.30. See Mad’lle

F(illeg) between 2 & 3.30 o’c. X. Petit ami au soir. No governess called,

only Hattie - v. like Minnie! Went to Stores met Lin & went to Lady F’s

together. A. Blunt, Mt Burgess, Hardmans, Boehms etc etc there. Good

music, quiet evg.

Tuesday 15 January

In bed to breakfast. Lin took chicks to National Gallery & Stuart ditto. Lin

rode morg. Mrs Earl, Judy & Blanche called, sofa.

Mrs. Mactear at home 10 o’c. Mrs. Jopling Rowe’s at home 9.30. Very

seedy. Lin rode morg. Took chicks to see Goody Two Shoes at Court

Theatre after lunch. Played whist. Dull & dark. Saw governess, more like

3rd rate housemaid.

Thursday 17 January

Geraldine’s wedding. Mrs. Macdougall at home 3 to 5. Mrs. H. N.

Pickering at home 4.30 to 7o’c. Feel v. queer & seedy. Chicks gone to

see Judy’s wedding. Dullish, no better than yesterday. Drove for hour

round Park with Mrs. S. Fatiguing as I don’t feel well enough to shout.

Friday 18 January

Mrs. A. Levy at home 4-7. County Council Election, first time. Lin hard at

work all day. Mrs. Sambourne & I had drive round Park. I wrote & asked

Dr. L. for some more granules, feeling weak generally.

Saturday 19 January

Mrs. Joachim’s children’s party 5.30 to 10. Lovely day, warm. Chicks out

morg, lunched early. Roy & self went in cab 2/- to see “Nagey” at

Avenue. Lin met us there. Lin v. worried about Ld. Mayor’s behaviour

with regard to drawing, he went up to see him in cart taking Roy, after to

B. Museum & St Alban’s Church. Lin left us at Avenue to see Mr George

Lewis about Ld. Mayor, thinks he can settle it all right. Went to

Charbonel & Walkers on way home had cup chocolate. Met G. Boehm,

went to Grosvenor Private View, left Roy & Lin to walk home fr. there, I

home in brougham. Maudie to Joachim’s looking v. sweet, home at

10.50.

Sunday 20 January

Chicks cannot go to St Alban’s on account of rain, v. disappointed. Too

wet for Lin to ride. Mr Furniss called, Lin rode after lunch. Sp. here to

lunch & dinner, dreadfully afraid he & Ada will separate, stayed v. late.

Little F. not gone. Roy went to Church with Minnie after lunch.

Letter fr. Mervyn, dearest Mother ill, wish I c’d go but am frightened to

leave the children. Lin riding morg. Saw funny little old governess.

Letter fr. Nurse. Lin rode morg. Accident in Row, gentleman riding with

Mrs de la Rue. Lin went up to see Sir G. Pringle. Met Lin at Garrick, went

together to Burnetts & other shops. Quiet evg.

Tuesday 22 January

Lady Freake’s 2nd at home in her Box, Albert Hall. Last Patti concert.

Mrs. Coronio’s at home 8.30. Mrs. de la Rue’s dinner 8 o’c. C. Stokes

asked us to dinner tonight also. Back ached morg. Did not go out altho’

fine. Wire dear Mother better. Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Baines & Mrs. Val Princep

called. Mother sent us box for Hall. Sent chicks with Laurence & Minnie,

dear Roy so anxious to hear Patti. Lin rode with Mr Furniss. Delightful

dinner & evg at Mrs. de la Rue’s. C. Burnand, Mrs. Alexander. Mrs. Lance

Speed & 3 others & Mr Fairfield only besides selves. Most entertaining

man Mr F, enjoyed evg. immensely.


Mrs. Jopling Rowe’s at home 9.30. Two stalls for Drury Lane Pantomime.

Dull morg. Better news of dear Mother. Lin & self took dear Roy to

Pantomime, enjoyed it immensely, met Mr Harrison coming out. Mrs.

Banks Tomlin, Mrs. Mocatta & Miss Harcourt called, unfortunately

missed them.

Thursday 24 January

Mrs. Medley’s dinner. Ld Mayor’s farewell dinner to American Minister

(Mr Phelps). Drove with Roy at 3 to Welby’s, left locket, to Burnetts

about cloth. To Baker St. Bazaar about glass, paid for it 15/3. Man

cheated me of a shilling. Don’t go there again! Con came in just as I was

getting in to bed, staying with F. Jackson. Slightly better news of dear

Mother. Midge went down to Westwood by Granville today fr. Cheshire.

Con stayed with me until 12 o’c. Grand gathering at Mansion House.

Friday 25 January

Mrs. A. Levy at home 4-7. Mrs. Boehm’s dinner 8 o’c. Cannot go on

account of work. Accepted. Slightly better news of dear Mother. Miss

Walford comes up today. Lin doing block on paper. V. swell dinner at

Mrs. B’s, all titles - but dull! Spoke about Minnie, Mrs. B. will let me know

Monday. Con came in to tea, had his tongue cut, seems v. well

otherwise. Con goes to The Royal to stay with H. Langley tomorrow.

Mrs. Sambourne & children had tiff. L. v. rude to Maud, pity she forgets

herself so.

Saturday 26 January

Mrs. Boughton at home 5-7. C. Stokes’ dinner at Metropole 7 o’c. Shop’g

morg. with Maud & Roy, lovely day. Called on Mrs. Coward, in bed with

bad cold. F. Walford to lunch, better news of dear Mother. F. W. to tea.

Mr & Mrs. a’Beckett called, had tea. Lin rode & went up to Club after

luncheon. C. trying evg! - principal conversation at dinner. Mrs. J. N.

Mason, son, Major Carter, Mr Trater(?) & Mr Wildon at Mrs. Stokes, funny

dinner! Mrs. S. looked sweetly pretty, can’t understand her love for C.

Wonder if it will last! (illeg)! They go to Nice next Saty. C. wild(?) on a

scheme to marry R. B(illeg) to Mr Cross (of C. & Blackwell).

Sunday 27 January

Mrs. Heilbut’s dinner 7.45. Lovely day. Chicks off with Minnie to St

Alban’s Church. Lin riding. Mr Angell called. Chicks home fr. church v.

late. Delightful evg. at Mrs. H’s. B. Tree took me down, Grossmith on

other side. V. jolly evg. all sang & played the fool(?) generally. Home in

cab.

Monday 28 January

Mrs. Roberts’ children’s party 4.30 till 8. Roy & self came to Westwood

by Granville, took Tommy a’B. as far as Margate. Midge met us, so glad

to see her. Lin saw us to Station.

Tuesday 29 January

Darling Roy’s holidays over. Mother v. weak, going to sleep with her

tonight. Letters fr. Lin. Drove in to Ramsgate with Roy, pouring wet.


Mother seemed very weak morg, felt v. unhappy. Slept with her. Took

darling Roy back to school at ¼ to 4. Midge went with us. Mr S. v.

amiable but won’t let Roy off Greek, old Bear! Cat got caught in trap &

had her paw injured. Miss Allen ill in bed, so sorry not to see her.

Thursday 31 January

Mrs. Rider Haggard’s dinner 7.45. Lovely day, dear Mother better, took

more during night. Midge left by Granville, Mervyn with her to Station.

Walked round grounds with her. Slept with Mother. Miss Roy dreadfully.

Friday 1 February

Mrs. Medley’s dinner 8 o’c. Cannot go. Dear Mother little better. Seems

strange without Jess. Hill with dear Mother at night. I slept well. Dr

Treeves called said Mother was much better, to keep up her strength.

Mer. receives & writes volumes to F. W, very love-sick. Letters fr. dear

Lin & Maud.

Saturday 2 February

Lovely day. Letters fr. dear Lin. Long to hear how Roy is getting on in

his new class. Up 4 times in night, dear Mother restless. Let fire out, so

stupid of me. Mother seemed tired but took little more nourishment. Mer.

& self went to Ramsgate shop’g. Got Roy’s 2 new flan. shirts, much

colder, he’ll want them.

Sunday 3 February

Lovely morg. Dear Mother not quite so well. Went with Mer. to St Peters,

left him at church & took wreath to grounds. Coming away lady asked

me which was the Giant’s tomb - never heard of it!. Walked to meet

carriage at Shallows, beautiful day but v. cold. Dear Mother sat at table

at dinner but seemed tired & weak & eat v. little. Mer. walked to Margate

after lunch. Mother & self sat in study, dear Mother had little sleep. Had

2 letters fr. dear Linley. Wrote to my darling boy & Nana.

Monday 4 February

Mother decidedly better, had better night. Mr Treeves called & signed

document. Snowed. Much colder. Left Westwood by 12.15. V. sorry to

leave dear Mother & yet anxious to be home to dear Lin & Maud. Lin met

me at Sta. Train up with Miss Borradale. Maud looking bonnie, Mrs. S.

well. Minnie been after place, Observatory Gardens.

Tuesday 5 February

Maud & self went out in brougham about everlasting governess. After

lunch Mrs. Alma Tadema, Silver, Mackenzie, Humphreys, N. Bergheim,

Keith, Cowan, Pollock, called. Lin rode. More sad details about death of

Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria. No news of dear Mother.

Wednesday 6 February

Wet morg. Minnie gone after 2 places. Engaged Madame Allain 10

Sutherland Place, Bayswater, twice a week for Maud, Wed & Saturday

for 2 hours at 11 o’c. Saw Mrs. Durrant for Minnie, likes her. Minnie went

to see house, thinks she can do it easily, high wages. Maud & self called

on Mrs. V. Cole, had tea there. Mrs. S. slept all evg. Oh the dullness of

this company, it gets more unbearable every day. I want to be kinder but

absolutely dislike her, she rubs me as I evidently do her up wrong way &

we both hate each other - honest truth.

Thursday 7 February

Mrs. Aird’s at home 9 to 12 o’c. Went morg. to Mrs. Goldstein with Maud

in brougham. Spoke well of little German governess, shall see her again,

if satisfactory take her. Minnie engaged by Mrs. Durant. Very pleasant

evg. at Mrs. Aird’s. Bitterly cold.

Friday 8 February

Fine morg. Tidied Maud’s things. Saw English governess, the only one I

have cared for as yet. Hope she will come & that we shall like her.

Pouring wet afternoon. Went with Maud & was fitted with new dress,

directoire. Paid Cruft’s bill 2/5½. Minnie had letter fr. lady, wants her

tomorrow. Wrote to decline little German governess. Lin hard at work on

paper. Lin dining at Mrs. du Maurier’s tonight.

Saturday 9 February

Bitterly cold. Madame Allain’s first lesson with Maud, took her for 2

hours walk. I went out shop’g. 2 letters fr. dear Mother, wants Lin & self

to go down, shall try directly I can move after little F. After lunch Lin

Maud & self went to Court Theatre to see “Mama”, capital. Met Mrs. P.

Wright there. Lin walked to Club & back. Lin rode morg. Maud & self

called on Miss Montalba, had chocolate there. Minnie went to her new

place at Mrs. Durant’s, 6 Queen’s G. Ter. Quiet evg. Notice of Lin in evg

papers. Letter v. satisfactory fr. Mrs. M. about Miss Gill.

Sunday 10 February

Bitterly cold. Lin & Maud for a long walk with Tony. Heavy snow storm.

Wrote letters to dear Mother, darling Roy, Mrs. Mackenzie, & Miss Gill

asking her to come next Friday. X. Petit ami. Horrid dream about dear

Mother. Snowing all afternoon.

Monday 11 February

Tea at Mrs. Coward’s 5 o’c. Bitterly cold. X. Petit ami, in bed till one

o’clock Snowing hard.

Tuesday 12 February

In bed till one o’clock. Feel better this time, slept for hour after

breakfast. Maud for long walk with Jane morg. Letter fr. Minnie, seems

uncomfortable, but cannot really judge yet. Mrs. Joachim called had

long chat with her. Gertrude had proposal fr. man 20 years older. Mrs. J.

against such marriages. Lin hard at work all day on Ballad. Snow still on

ground.


Snowing. Maud out with Madame Allain, 2nd lesson. Alice to lunch & talk

about Minnie. Lin working at Blarney Ballads. Coals in at last. Roads still

bad. Folkestone roughed & to meet Lin fr. Punch dinner tonight. Miss

Gill to tea 4.30.

Thursday 14 February

Mrs. W. S. Gilbert at home 10.30. In bed till 12.30. Drove after lunch with

Maud round Park. Charming party at Mrs. Gilbert’s (I c’d not go). Miss

Miss Julia Neilson there, sang, & charmed the hearts of men generally.

Friday 15 February

Mrs. A. Levy at home 4-7. Miss Gill comes. Nursery window broken.

Took Maud for drive with me at 3. Laurence took Maud for walk morg.

Miss G. arrived at 5. Nursery looked v. comfortable with dining room

piano in it. Found Miss G. very nice. Lin & self did not dine until 11 o’c.

Saturday 16 February

Lin & self came to Westwood by Granville. Met large party of Hammonds

& Hoods & Thomsons coming down. I got awful stiff neck thro’ having

window open. Poor Maud v. unhappy at my leaving. Madame A. came

morg. Maud had her French lesson in dining room as nursery window

was being mended, v. cold. Found dear Mother so so. Letter fr. Minnie

determined to leave, pity. Found Miss G v. pleasant at breakfast this

morg.

Sunday 17 February

Lovely day, warmer. Lin walked over to see dear Roy, he had a cold &

c’d not return here to lunch with Lin. I was dreadfully disappointed not

to see his dear little face. He finds the lessons v. much more difficult

than in his last class.

Monday 18 February

Heavenly day, warm as spring. Mother walked out with me once down

garden, v. tired after. Lin working in (illeg) room most comfortable.

Lovely & sunny all day. No letters by first post. Darling Maud wrote me a

long letter much illustrated, few lines fr. Mrs. S. enclosed.

Tuesday 19 February

Lovely day. Lin v. busy finishing 2nd block or rather drawing. Edgar

came over after lunch, stayed till 8 o’c. Looks v. well for any of us.

Mother better. Letters fr. Maud & Mrs. S. Lin hard at work, not out all

day.


Lovely day. Lin left by Granville this morning. Mr Green called & Mervyn

went & lunched with him & remained till 6 o’c. Tassel went after leaving

Lin at Station to see dear Roy who he found in bed with a bad cold, he is

to be moved tomorrow in to another room. Miss Allen better. I drove to

Ramsgate after lunch shop’g, came back & found Connie B. & Florrie H.

here. Mother had heart attack fr. fatigue, better after. Mervyn & self to

dinner alone. Letter fr. Midge, few lines fr. Mrs. S. Maud all right. Letter

fr. Miss Gill this morg. Maud happier.

Thursday February 21

Lin dines at Mr Penn’s Wyndham Club. Two letters fr. Lin. Mother much

better. I walked morg. with Mervyn. Mervyn went to Margate after lunch,

saw dear Roy thinks him looking v. seedy, sh’d like to have him home &

nurse him, bless him! Mrs. Hammond & silly niece called. Hailed pretty

heavily after lunch. X. Dear Maud came on “unwell”. Mervyn went to see

dear Roy looking v. seedy fr. cold.

Friday 22 February

Mrs. A. Levy at home 4-7. Mrs. Bradbury’s at home 9 o’clock. Allotment

letters of new shares in Cent. Argt. Raily. due. Two letters fr. Linley.

Maud still seedy. Letter fr. Mrs. S. Maud having little Cowards to tea

tomorrow. Mervyn dined at Mrs. Green’s.

Saturday 23 February

Heavy snow on ground. Mervyn & self for walk. Mother much better,

seems to get stronger every day. Lin coming by Granville. Met him at

Margate & went on to see dear Roy, found him better. Mr Sch.

ungracious as ever, seemed amused at Lin’s coat, fur. Letters fr. Miss G.

& Mrs. S. Darling Maud came on seedy on Thursday which accounts for

her looking unwell lately. Lin tired, only arrived fr. Mrs. Bradbury’s

dance at ½ p. 2 this morning. News of Yellow fever having broken out on

the ship the Barkers have gone to S. America in. (illeg) dead & buried at

sea. Letter fr. dear Roy.

Sunday 24 February

Lovely morg. Lin gone for long walk along coast. Mother better but little

boil on her dear nose.

Monday 25 February

Mrs. Carbutt’s at home 4-6. Came up with Lin fr. Westwood by Gran. Left

dear Mother much better. I think Maud looking poorly & depressed. Went

to Mrs. Carbutt’s, v. slow. Met Petties, Medley & Miss Wills there.

Densely slow. Game of cards with dear Maud, Miss G. & Mrs. S. Lin had

good ride, v. v. cold. Found all well at home. Quiet evening. Madame du

Quaine called, so sorry to miss her.

Tuesday 26 February

Bitterly cold. Maud looks better & had good breakfast tho’ poor lunch

after her walk. I went to see rooms at Mrs. White’s for Mother, engaged

for some time. Went & saw Mrs. Macdougal who rec’d Mrs. Harrison’s

rooms. Went & saw them, seem comfortable, tho’ dear for such a

situation. Lin v. busy all day on Punch work. Bitterly cold & (illeg)! Lin to

Mr Hunter’s after tea.

Bitterly cold. Took Mrs. S. to Station, had to wait 35 minutes for Ealing

train. Walked after to Watsons, shop’d etc. Drove at 3.30 to Miss Cook’s,

find her prices nearly as high as Madame’s. To Welbys left Nana’s locket

& to Burnetts got stuff for Maud’s dress, ordered cloth. Called on Mrs.

Mocatta. Great furor! over Burmah Ruby Mines! Miss G. came down &

sang after M. was in bed v. charmingly, seems to amuse Maud nicely

with games. Jane went to do shop’g for me & saw Minnie, not well,

leaving at her month.

Thursday 28 February

Mrs. A. G. Pollock’s dinner ¼ to 8. Mrs. Flower’s at home 3-6. Bitterly

cold. Went out morg. to Watsons, snowing & v. dirty. Lin played me trick

Bitterly cold, snow. Lin hard at work. Walked shops. Maud had Dolly to

tea. Lin hard at work. Miss G’s sister came. Maud arranged magic

lantern. I drove at 3 to Madame about mantle, called on Tabs, out, Mrs.

Medley. Tabbie & B. Barrs called here, stayed some time. Miss Harcourt

to tea.

Bitterly cold. Madame Allain here. Maud & Miss A to Stuart Gallery 1/2.

Went out shop’g bought lining 1/8 for M’s dress. Called on Mrs. Coward,

saw chicks & Baby. Mrs. C. kindly promised to lend me Evelyn’s dress

to try on Maud. Linley rode. Sp. called morg. Lin walked up to town with

him & rode after lunch. Lin dined at Mr Abbey’s, home v. late, after 4!

Dense yellow fog early & v. cold, hard frost. Lin home fr. Abbey dinner

to George Roller at 4 o’c. v. excited, won £10. Wish they w’d not gamble.

Awake when he came in, v. festive. Cleared up & became lovely. Lin

walked to Club. Miss G. went to St Mary Abbots. Lin & self overslept

ourselves. Long ac’t in Observer about Piggott suicide at Madrid &

“Times” being taken in so over the Parnell case.

Monday 4 March

Bitterly cold. Maud better, pain gone. Busy all morg. Drove at 3.30 to

Mde, fitted with mantle. Fetched Maud & went to tea at Montalbas. M

enjoyed it v. cosy. Miss G, Maud & self evg. meal together. Cut out M’s

dress after. Lin dined at Garrick, to Savoy after. Mr Tenniel gave dinner.

Tuesday 5 March

Asked Tab & Ham to dine 7.30. Mother coming up to Grosvenor with

Mervyn. H. Roller & Miss Huxley’s wedding 2.30, Lin & self going. Lovely

day. Sad news of Mr E. J. Wood’s death fr. severe chill at Coventry. Lin

& self to H. Roller’s wedding, lovely girl Beatrice. Called & had tea at Mr

du Maurier’s on way home. Mrs. Tuer called. Little Cowards to tea.

Wednesday 6 March

To Miss Dampier’s to be fitted. Walked some distance. Mervyn called v.

excited about getting 2 letters fr. Lin for A. Harris & Wyndham, hope he

will find engagement. I drove with him to Gros. Hotel at 3.30 & remained

on to dinner with Mother. Dear Mother looking fatter & better altogether,

went down to table d’hôte dinner with Mervyn & self. M. on to Hall to

meet F. W. who sleeps at Gros. tonight with Mother. Letter fr. Mrs. S.

returning tomorrow fr. Ealing. Barkers all right at B. Ayres. Entered £5

Lin gave me in Roy’s P. O. Savings Book.

after. I stayed on all afternoon with Mother. Carriage fetched me at 7 o’c.

Maud’s cold rather bad. Lin took her after lunch to see Paul Jones as I

c’d not go, v. amusing. Miss G. went out on her own account came back

just before Maud & Lin. Letter fr. Tabs asking to dine here tomorrow.

Mrs. S. returned from Ealing looking v. well. Quiet evg. Lin rode morg.

Brougham fetched them fr. theatre, they called on Tabs, found her out.

Guthrie, Mervyn, Tabs, Ham & B. Barrs to dinner 7.30. Mrs. S. & Miss G.

did not come down. Miss G. bad headache. V. jolly evg. Ham came out of

his shell more. B. Barrs v. much improved & seems intelligent.

Lovely day. Lin rode with Mrs. Gilbert morg. Dear M’s cold little better.

Roy’s letter, seems well & looking forward to holidays, v. good report fr.

Mr Sch. Miss G. & self went round of calls, made 12. R. Haggard, W. S.

Lin dines with Mr Aird at House of Commons. Very seedy in bed till 12.

No one called. Lin had good time at House. Heard Trevelyan, Ld. C.

Beresford, Sir W. Lawton etc speak. Dined with Mr Aird & went to theatre

after with him. Home late.

Wednesday 13 March

Anniversary of dear Father’s death. Tony bitten by stray dog, had him

sent to Stables, must watch him for 6 months. Lin rode before breakfast,

dined at Royal Institute, sat next to Harry Quilter & Sir Vincent

Barrington. Went with Maud at 2.15 with basket of flowers to Vic. Sta.

sent it by Granville & sent telegram to Mervyn to fetch it fr. Broadstairs.

On to see Mother, left Maud & took F. W. on with me to be fitted at

Madames’s, awful fit!!! Missed Maud & Mother. F. came on with me &

had tea, general confusion. Two Cowards to tea, Maud in late, acting

after. Laurence out little while evg. Jane managed v. nicely.

Thursday 14 March

Mrs. Medley’s dinner 8 o’c. Mrs. Elkin Mocatta’s dance 9.30. Lovely day.

Lin rode before breakfast. I came down to breakfast. Miss G. seems v.

delicate! Salon bien mal nettoyer ou pas nettoyer de tout. Nana came

with Mrs Matheson & 3 children. Mrs. M. very pretty & sweet looking so

glad Nana seems, & is, so comfortable. Thinks M. looking poorly & thin

in face. Very charming dinner at Mrs. Medley’s, flowers lovely – 3 huge

silver bowls filled with tulips. Mr Coster Dutch took me in & Mr Firth

M.P. on other side, most amusing. Went on to Mocatta dance, not

crowded enough. Mrs. Tweedie asked me to call. Miss Gill went with her

sister to entertainment at Chelsea, in at 10.

Penn, walked with her, v. pleased to hear about Roy. Maud seems

languid & not well, no appetite. Called on Miss Lutyens. Miss G & Maud

me after lunch in carriage, left her boots to be mended. To Mrs. Kemp’s

about Lin going there Sunday & to Mother, found her so poorly sent

Maud home & stayed until 7. Lin sent carriage for me. Maud seems very

poorly & full of cold.

Lin goes to first night of Richard 111. Saw Madame Allain. Gave Maud

castor oil, tongue v. bad & seems full of cold & phlegm. Lin working

hard all morg. on second drawing. Tiresome because of drawing room.

Drove at 3 to M. Pollock’s, Mrs. Chapman’s & Mrs. Crawford, away, went

on to Mother seems very poorly, Mervyn too looked worried & seedy. F.

W. there. Mrs. Chay(?) Terraro & C. Burnand came in to tea. Mervyn saw

me into cab, 1/6 home. Lin rode at 5 o’c. Mrs. Sambourne & Miss Gill

went out after lunch.

Invite to supper at Mrs. Kemp’s 7.30. Maud’s cold still heavy. Miss G. &

Mrs. S. to church together. Miss G. & self to Church at 3.30. Went on

after to Mother spent evg. there, cab home 2/-. Mother alone, seems v.

poorly. Met C. Carr & D. Forbes on way to Mother. Mervyn at F. W’s.

Gibbing horse coming home. Mervyn came as far as Church with me.

rest out except Mrs. Silver. Met 2 v. nice girls there. Maud came down &

had game but does not seem herself.

Grosvenor Gal. Abbey there. Sad news of Mary Anderson v. ill, also Mrs.

Langtry. Evelyn Coward here to tea. Maud little better.

First night German Reed’s. Lovely day. Lin rode before breakfast. Box

for morg. performance at Drury Lane. Mrs. S, Miss G, Maud & Evelyn to

Pantomime. Alice Leigh dined here & went to German Reed’s with me. V.

pretty little piece - Grainford(?). Laurence paid Lindsey £2.16.6, Derry

Toms £1.10.0 & Wellby’s £2.17.0. for me after lunch, also left Pass Book.

X. Maudie’s time due. Rain & snow. Boy forgot to leave “Times” amazing

on ac’t of Lin’s work. In all morg. busy. Called after lunch on Aunt Linda

& stayed all afternoon. Lin dined out, met Americans, not in till after 2

o’c. Miss Gill finished Maud’s dress & stayed down & sang evg.

Friday 22 March

Mrs. A. Levy at home 4-7. Walked morg to R. Row with Maud & Miss G,

lovely day. M. seems better & brighter. Miss G. went after lunch with

Mrs. S. to see Mrs. Carter, returned at 8.30. Maud & self had very happy

afternoon together, called on Mrs. Levy, O’Brian, Skirrow, Humphreys,

H. Power, Montefiore & Mrs. Arthur Levy. Maud enjoyed it, at home at

Mrs. Levy’s, amusing men there for a wonder. Letters fr. Midge & Miss

Bourne. Lin v. busy on paper drawing of Harcourt as Elephant catching

Balfour as Eel! Excellent.

self went by bus to Prince’s Theatre “Paul Jones”. Miss Huntingdon

(American) quite charming no wonder Maud was fascinated by her. Mr &

Mrs. Skirrow there. Lin lunched with Mr Bradbury & came on to us at

Theatre after, home in cab. Mis G. went to Hampstead to see her sister.

Found Mrs. S. v. tired on return. Lin & self went to Lady Hardman’s at 10.

Phonograph interesting but cannot see to what use it will be put, to hear

once is enough - & more than enough.

Sunday 24 March

Cold & dull. Mrs. S. seems tired & over done. Lin off for ride. I feel tired

& seedy fr. atmosphere of rooms last night which was very bad. Went to

Church at 3.30 with Miss G. & Maud. Sp. here, met us coming out of

Church, with Mr Plasket. Mr & Mrs. Tweedie called, stayed tea. Lin busy

with photos all afternoon. Lin rode with Mr Coward to Richmond.

Monday 25 March

Paid washing £1.0.6½ leaves £1.18 still to pay. Mrs. Ascol & family left,

let their house again. Went with Maud at 2.30 to Gardens, so lovely out,

called coming home on Mrs Webster, Welch, Ionides & B. Lin & self went

to see Richard 111 in evg. House smelt like tom cats, horrid. Good

performance & exquisitely mounted piece but only seeing others as

these characters one feels what a great artist Irving really is

notwithstanding his excentricities.

Tuesday 26 March

Mrs. Lucy’s dance to G. O. M. Lin going. Mrs. C. Critchett’s dinner, can’t

go. I going alone to Mrs. C’s. Emma in very bad temper about milk – pity

she takes everything personally. Lovely day. Lin rode before breakfast.

Mrs. H. Levy called. Maud went with Lin to see Miss Huntingdon. Had tea

at “Niagara”. Delightful dinner at Mrs. Critchett’s. Sir John Morris took

me in & Sir W. Alt(illeg), head of Foreign Office on other side, most

interesting men.

Mother. Mrs. Sambourne left us for St Neots at 3.30. Miss G. took her to

Hunter & Mrs. Fildes then on Mother at Grosvenor, found her v. poorly.

Mervyn came in while there, has been engaged by Dacre at Grand

Theatre Islington, was off to theatre with his everlasting F. W. Mother &

self went together to Mr Corbet’s, to Edgar & So’s, found them in - had

tea there - to Fortnums. I then left Mother at Grosvenor as afraid to leave

Maud.

Mr Boehm, Abbey, C. Carr, Guthrie, Tenniel, du Maurier to dinner. Mary

Barker & Jolly came to assist & E’s husband. Supper after, played

roulette. All seemed to enjoy evg. Table looked lovely, yellow green &

orange. Miss G. & self did shop’g at stores etc & arranged flowers &

fruit. Made coffee in morg. room. Mervyn’s first night in “Double

Marriage” at Grand Theatre Islington.

Tuesday 2 April

Lovely day. Sp. called & brought his two chicks, both look v. delicate. In

all day. Put away glass etc. Maud out twice, looking better. Mrs. Coward,

F.W, Lady Nottage, Mrs. Power, Mrs. Vicat Cole called. Mervyn in.

Spencer came in to dinner, sang after, left at 11. Lin hunted Queen’s &

had delightful day, rode with Ld. Coventry all the time. Sp’s two chicks

came morg.

Wednesday 3 April

Colder. Mervyn gone to see Mrs. Palmer B. at Kew – settled satisfactory.

£1 salary a week & all expences to play “Rector” & “Tares”, Mrs. O.

Barrington’s play. Maud v. weepy & seedy. Spoke to Mde A. about M.

having French after luncheon. Walked morg. Went to Church, excellent

sermon but too long - on sympathy. Called & had talk with Mrs. Orton.

Took M. with me at 3 to call on Humphreys, Latham, Critchett, Pickering

& Holmes. Met Ada Sp. there – aftraid I got her Nurse & Sp. into row by

saying chicks came yesterday. Lin walked to Punch dinner.

X. Petit ami matin. F. W. came to lunch & went at 3.30 with me in

brougham. Called on Mrs. du Maurier said uncomfortable thing about

Abbey’s birthday being 1st April, Mrs. du M’s same day. Mrs. C. Carr

there, uncomfortable generally. Called Mrs. Mackinlay interesting talk on

Mervyn off early for rehearsal. In bed till 12 o’c. Maud & self went up in

brougham to Criterion, Lin met us. Saw “Still Waters run deep”

charmingly acted all round. Wyndham & Mary Moore, Mrs. B. Bure,

Blakeley etc. Letter fr. Mrs. Arkcoll & Ada Sp. Miss G. to Hampstead

afternoon. Lin did second drawing morning. Spent(?) tremendously all

morg. V. tired.

Mrs. A. Levy at home 9 o’c to welcome Mr Cowen. Picture Sunday.

Mervyn left by 11 o’c train for Westwood. Lin rode. In bed till 12, better

this time much. Maud & Lin went to 17 studios.

Mrs. Kirzon’s luncheon can’t go on ac’t of Lin’s doing Robinson Crusoe

by Burnand which must be finished in a month. Mervyn returned early fr.

Westwood, brought flowers & eggs. At 3 o’c Maud went with me called

on Mrs. Rainbow, Harcourt, Banks Tomlin, Tattersall, Warre & Lady

C. Critchett & Mrs. Roberts called. Vy. cleverly acted “Weaker Sex” but

unsympathetic play. Mr & Mrs. Kendall excellent. Saw Mrs. Phillips &

buttonholed by Mrs. Black! know it myself.

Wednesday 10 April

Mrs. H. Levy’s dinner 8 o’c. can’t go. Dense fog. Dull & dark all day,

pouring wet. Went at 3 in brougham with Maud to Garrick, left Lin’s coat

there.

Thursday 11 April

Dense black fog, darker than night. Took Mervyn at 11 o’c to ½ Moon St,

called & saw rooms Maddox St & met darling Roy at Victoria. Tassel with

him, came on here in cab, had lunch here. Roy looking well & plump tho’

not nearly so much grown as Maud. Mervyn leaves us today for rooms.

Called at Bank, altered my signature fr. Marion to Mary Anne. Took Cert.

for £40 stock in Cent Arg’t Rly. Wire fr. Lady Mayoress about Maud as

character for ball on 1st May.

Lin hard at work. Miss G. took chicks out twice.

same. Maud in morg. seems languid. Maud & self to afternoon service at

Monday 15 April

Roy with croup. Kept him in bed all day. Sat with him all morg. Went with

Maud at 4.30 to Mrs. Messel’s & had tea there, met Miss Schlessinger &

Mrs. Shuster there. Roy v. tired slept at 9 & well all night.

Tuesday 16 April

Roy’s cough better had good night kept fire in & kettle going. Dressed

Roy, went at 11 to Vic to fetch his playbox & to Stores to get Mother’s

present. After lunch Miss G. sat with Roy. Katie Speed, Miss Reed & Mrs.

Alfred Reed called. Lin hard at work. Roy much worse, began incessant

coughing at 5 o’clock. Sent for Orton at 9 o’clock, came & gave Roy

diaphoretic, wish I had given him one yesterday. Jane fetched it 1/9 &

paid for it.

Wednesday 17 April

Up all night with dear Roy coughing till 4.30 incessantly. Dull day. Dear

Roy seems better this morg. Letter fr. Mrs. S. enclosing money for dear

chicks. Orton came.

Thursday 18 April

Dear Roy better, came in drawing room for short time but cried with

dreadful pain in tooth, slept with him. Orton came morg.

Friday 19 April

Mrs. A. Levy at home 4-7. Sp. & Daggles came morg. Went to Park with

Maud & self in brougham morg. & returned here to lunch & Mervyn also.

Up all night till 6 o’c with darling Roy in agony with tooth. Mr Herbert &

brother came - gave gas - & took it out. Quite exhausted after, slept after

lunch. I had nap also, feel awfully done up. Dr O. said Roy might get up

but much too weak to do so. Lin rode & took photos. Orton came at

lunch time.

Lovely day. Dear Roy better tho’ quiet & languid. Lin, M. & self in cart to

Park, walked half way down, met Messrs Finlay, Joshua, Bartlett etc. Dr

O. called to see Roy. Sp. came with 2 chicks. Roy up & down to lunch,

gave him champagne. Lin lunched at Club, played tennis after with Mr B.

on Campden Hill. Went to first night of “Doris” at “Lyric”. Lin rode after

lunch. Mare with cracked heel. Orton came.

Fine morg. Miss G. to Church morg. Dear Roy better but looks seedy &

pale. Lin & self walked to Hyde Pk Gate Corner & took cab home. Sp.

Ada & Dag. called, did not remain to dinner. Played with Roy, Miss G.

also. Just going to Church with Maud when Mr O’Brian called, stayed

some time so c’d not go. Lin lunched at Club, home to tea. Laurence out.

Dear Roy better. Miss G, Roy, Maud & self walked to Round Pond.

Lovely day but cold wind. On to Park, came back alone with Roy, v. tired

& X, gave him beef tea when we came in. Played in garden till lunch,

seems seedy generally. Miss G. out afternoon & evg. V. happy afternoon

alone with chicks. Lin played tennis on Campden Hill with Bartlett. Poor

Roy’s tooth ached again & cough troublesome at night. Jane v. poorly.

Sp. came in to dinner, left about 11.20. Jolly married today.

Lovely day. Went in cart morg. with Lin & Maud to Park. Roy & Miss G.

walked as wind was cold & returned soon, Roy still seems weak. Dr O.

Colder. Roy down to breakfast. Out morg. & afternoon with L. after lunch

to see boat race on Pond. I drove to Mrs. Dickens, 7 children there!!! Had

long chat with her on house etc. Drove to Harrods, dirty place tho’

cheap. Called on Miss Lutyens & Americans opposite. Lin busy on

Chamberlaine & Ld. Randolph, drawing on paper. Saw Mrs. Phillips

about things, & Furzicott.

Mrs. A. Levy at home 4-7. Lovely day. Roy down to breakfast. Lovely box

of soldiers fr. Mr Guthrie. Sp. came in, walked out morg. with me. Met

chicks in park, home together. Sp. went with me to Stores. Changed

credit notes for 5/1. Met F. Barking Young, not seen him for years.

Bought flowers 1/-, M’s paper pattern 1/6, lilly roots. Sp. returned here to

tea, called & left cards on Mrs. Carpenter.

Walked out morg. shops. Miss G. took chicks, met them in Kens. Mare

still with cracked heel! Lin lunched at Club. Miss G, M, R. & self went to

Adelphi by bus, Lin met us there. Came back in carriage, Miss G. in Om.

“Harbour Lights” chicks delighted with it. Quiet evg. Played games with

Roy.

2nd issue of B. A. Gt. Southern Rly. Went in cart with Lin & Roy to Zoo.

Lin went to Club after leaving us & dined there, on after to first night of

“Claudian”. Roy & self had v. jolly afternoon at Zoo, v. tired after. Nearly

thrown down getting out of cart. Jolly knocked up against wheel of a

cart coming home. Roy v. tired.

going with chicks to get their shoes at stores. Maud going to tea with

Lech’s 5.30 o’c. Poured after lunch. Saw gentleman about Basson, one

of Queen’s equerries. Chicks & Miss G. went to Private V. of Grosvenor

Gly. Met Mr Guthrie there. Carriage took M. on to Mrs. Lech’s after. Jane

fetched her, sems to have enjoyed herself. Lin & self quiet evg. Lin

worked after dinner.

Lady Mayoress fancy dress ball. Can’t go. Chicks with Lin & Miss G. to

see “The Two Roses” at Criterion & to Private V. of New Gallery after!!!

Lin dines at Mr Lewis Wingfield’s. Lin drove Roy & self in cart to Vic Sta,

met Phillips at Sta. going to Paris for exhibition Monday. Carriage met

us at Broadstairs Sta. Most lovely day like summer. Effie & Con at

Westwood when we arrived, Eff looking well, dear Mother fairly so, Con

seedy. Roy v. happy with Fee & her pup. Eff walked home at 7 o’c, Con

staying here. Roy slept in my bed. V. depressed at night, worried me

about a tutor, wish he were happier at school.

Mrs. Cusins at home 4 o’c (Pianoforte recital). Lin dines with Mr Birch at

Academy din. Letter fr. dear Maud morg & Lin at night. Roy & self birds

nesting, found 7 with eggs in, lots without. Roy v. depressed & down.

Made good lunch & out again, took dear boy to school at 5 o/c. Mr Sch.

v. aimiable. Miss Allen better but v. far from well, had long chat with her.

& saw alteration at school & dear Roy in class. Gave him 2/-, dear

Mother 3/-. Forgot key! Found Effie here on return, went back after

dinner in carriage.

Margate with Mother morg, bought Roy’s cake, jam etc & left it in his

Jeff v. good & amusing. Found all eggs gone from nests Roy & I found

Mrs. Spielman’s dinner ¼ to 8 o’c. Lovely day. Mother & self drove morg.

to Ramsgate shop’g. Met Eff at Station. Con not so well in bed nearly all

day. Mrs. Treves called with her husband. Mother & self had walk thro’

grounds, saw any quantity of rabbits. Mother having bath put in. Short

letter from Dickie, & fr. Maud. Wonder how my dear Roy is., long to see

Mr Alfred de Rothschild’s dinner. Juvenile meeting at Town Hall 4.30 pm.

Went with Eff to see my dear Roy. Sat some time with Miss Allen, only

saw darling for a few seconds, fancy he looks thinner already.

H. & Jessie come for a week. I returned fr. Westwood by Gran. Con

better. Mother saw me to Station. Midge arrived soon after. L. met me at

Station & so ends a very happy little visit which we both enjoyed

morg. Had horrid dream about him being hurt riding. Lin goes over to

Paris with all the Punch Staff today.

Lovely day. Cleaned out Dickies’ cage & stayed in all day. Lin lunched at

tired to meet him there. Norman Sinclair called & had tea with me. His

father thinks of taking up title but it is difficult without money, Lord

Caithness having left all money away the last heir having cut off entail.

by 10.33 fr. Vic. to Pulborough. Eff met me, cost 11/6 fare. 2/- cab to Vic,

goes well. Country lovely, think we might be very comfortable there. Con

to Vic Sta. in brougham, lunched there 12/-. Guards 1/- cakes 1/3

Laurence 1/5, cabs. Con met us at Pulboro’ & left us, on to garden party

at Lady Bartlett’s. Alone evg, v. v. tired. Laurence & luggage arrived at

10 o’c. Unpacked & to bed.

Friday 16 August

Mrs. H. Holmes at home, garden party. Went with Con & Eff to garden

party at Mrs. Haywood Johnstone’s, most lovely view. Drove there &

back in cart, enjoyed it v. well. Young Tattersall there. Chicks out all day.

Saturday 17 August

X. en matin, stayed in bed. Eff & Con out to lunch & tea. Lin arrived

about 7, Con met him. V. good dinner evg, little cook managed much

better, was rather (illeg) on ac’t of Lin. Claret.

Sunday 18 August

Lovely day. In bed till 12. Maud & Eff to Church. Eddie B. over to lunch

etc. Sat out all afternoon. Maud nurse & chicks for walk. Roy teasing

kittens. Eff, Con, Lin & Eddie B. for long walk after tea. Sent cheque of

£15 to London & West. Bk. for 3rd instal. on 15 new C. Argentine Rly,

lovely drive thro’ exquisite scenery. Claret.

Wednesday 21 August

Lin went up by 1st train, goes to Mansion House to summons Mr Sims

for threatened assault. Pouring wet day. Roy & Con together all morg.

Eff in my room & writing. (entry partially rubbed out). Sent chicks

money, 2 cheques of £1 each & 2 10/- postal orders (numbers) Claret.

Thursday 22 August

Maud petit ami. Heavy thundery showers. Mr & Mrs. J. Constable called

asking all of us to a picnic for next Tuesday fr. Arundel. Drove with Eff,

Roy & servant to Mrs. Bartlett’s picnic up most precipitous roads thro’

exquisite scenery. V. jolly party, had tea in church & schoolroom. Played

cricket. Drove home by different Rd. equally beautiful. Home at 8 o’c. Did

not sleep well, commenced thinking.

Friday 23 August

Heavenly day. Down to breakfast, Maud taken my place in bed. Eff, Con

& Roy playing cricket. Letters fr. Lin with ac’t in paper of his threatened

assault from Mr Sims. Sims has to find surety in £100 to keep the peace

& pay all cost of summons. Letter fr. Midge about dear Mother, thinks

seriously of excema, feel v. anxious about her. Letter fr. Mr Lowndes

ack. receipt of cheque for £18.2.0. Garden party at Mrs. Jephson’s. Paid

Laurence for parcels 3/2, washing 4/11. Claret.

Lin & Miss Gill coming down by 3.55 train. Lovely day but cold wind.

Gardened with Con morg. After to cricket field to see Eff etc playing. On

to Common, met Vicar, took me in to see his cottage & gathered heather.

Told me about his wife dying etc. Met Eff & Roy & went home together.

After lunch walked to Mrs. Jeffson’s with Eff & Roy. V. nice party but

rained. Walking home met Con with Miss G. Eff took Miss G. home. Con,

Lin & self on to Mrs. J’s again. Mr, Mrs. & young Turner in to roulette

after dinner. Lost 3d. V. good fun. Maudie v. hot! Little Simpson girl to

tea with Maud. Claret.

Heavenly day. Miss G, Eff & self to Church. V. pretty C. & nice service.

Lovely walk over common home. Sat out all day. Maud out with Nurse

after lunch. Roy with Miss G. Claret.

Monday 26 August.

Lovely day. To Cricket field, played with Mdes. Jeffson, Rose, Turner,

Simpson etc. After lunch Eff, Con, Maud, Nurse & 2 chicks & Miss G.

drove to Petworth in wagonettee with (illeg). H. went dead lame coming

home. Lin & self walked to Cricket field. Roy & young Turner there,

stayed some time. Went over Mr Turner’s rooms at (illeg).

Tuesday 27 August

Lovely day. Mrs. J. Constable’s picnic. Dickie went with us. Caught train

only just in time fr. Pulboro’ to Arundel. Left dear Lin’s things at Arundel

as he goes to town tonight. Very jolly day. Lin, E. B, Floss & G. met us at

Arundel. Went off in large party to River, 3 boats, & up River to (illeg)

mill of Amberley. Picniced on brow of hill. Lovely view in D. of Norfolk’s

park. Roy boozy after champagne cup. V. delicious lunch, after played

cricket, made one run of which v. proud. Con, Roy, Lin & self rowed to

Amberley at 4.30. Left dear Lin at Pulboro’ when he went to London.

Miss G. came in & had dinner & sang after to Con & self, Eff staying with

B’s for night. 4/- fares, 4/- fly.

same party to dinner & E. B. also. Immense fun over cricket, gentlemen

v. bad first innings, ladies did best but beaten later by gentlemen. Mrs.

Jephson & Mrs. Bartlett gave tea in field. Large audience & altogether v.

successful day. E. B. stayed night at Inn. Dear Lin starts tonight for

Lovely day. Roy in bed with cold. Con gone to Boehm’s, looks seedy &

depressed again. Bobby Turner in. Sat with Roy & had game with him

when dressed at cricket. After lunch Eff, Maud & self went to call Mrs.

Johnstone, went in, wanted us to stay to tea out of doors. C’d not as

went on to School treat at Mrs. Jeffson’s. Over 98 children there, every

possible amusement for them. Bran dips, sweets for scamble, beautiful

prizes & money for races. Maud enjoyed it immensely. Con (illeg) at

dinner. Post card fr. dear Lin, had reached Rogart & had comfortable

Lovely day. Flower show at Petworth. Letters fr. Tabs & Mervyn. Dear

Mother going to Buxton. Heard of accident to Sunday Scotch express at

Crewe, Mr Beale injured. Received cheque book for 25 cheques. Bruit

Eff went to Arundel for day. Cream & blackberries at lunch. Con & self

drove to Petworth in cart. Left me at Miss Dubert where Mrs. Jeffson &

Miss Simpson were. All had tea & walked round the lovely garden. Con,

Friday 6 September

Lovely day. Going to have picnic lunch. Went in cart with Eff, Maud, Roy

to Bignor Park. Had lunch in the lovely woods there, party of 28. Boiled

our own potatoes then all the chicks went together in huge wagon thro’

wood. We walked & heavens! how tired I was & Eff seedy! Can’t imagine

Lovely day. Blackberry party all afternoon, Mrs. Haywood Johnston etc.

home. E. Boehm returned with us fr. Pulboro’, staying here, has boy’s

room. Chicks, Con & Miss G. out in boat all afternoon. Roy swelling

too fanciful about herself to suit us & too old. Wish I had taken Lin’s

advice & had a younger woman.

was suited with governess, rec’ds Mademoiselle! Sent Tab’s jacket off

by Jane, cost 9d. Lin & self to see “A Man’s Shadow” at Haymarket,

most thrilling play. B. Tree wonderful, old Hernandez to great advantage

as barrister & council & Miss J. Neilson v. beautiful. Extremely well

acted all round. Turquands & P. Reed there, also Mr Parr & Leslie Ward

& his mother.


Wet dull morg. Letter fr. Mrs. Spofforth about a Mademoiselle. In all day.

Put away dear Roy’s things. Mademoiselle called with Mrs. Smidt,

holiday governess, dreadful looking little frump, w’d not do to go out

with Maud. Lin & self went to see N. Farren & Leslie at Gaiety, most

amusing piece, “Ruy Blas” comique. Saw the H. Lawsons, Warres,

Pineros, Mr Woodruffe & Claude Watney & young Tattersall who came

up to our box. L. forgot to put out any whiskey, had to go down & fetch

certificate. Miss Walford to lunch & tea. Went out shop’g with her at 3 in

brougham & called on Mrs. Finlay. V. late night.

Lin had Turkish bath & lunched & dined in town & to first night of “The

dead heart” at Lyceum. Irving, E. Terry & son & Bancroft. Most

wonderful performance, enthusiastic reception. Called on C. S. & wife at

To lunch at Mrs. Child’s, can’t go. Pain better. In bed to breakfast. Dull

see rooms for Mother, all engaged. Called & had tea with Mrs. Holmes.

Wet morg. J. v. rude when I spoke to her about days of cleaning. Letter

fr. Midge saying Mother w’d be at Grosvenor Hotel today & wants oak

Went up morg. to see Mother with Maud in brougham. Sent M. back,

stayed & had lunch with her, Mervyn & F. W. All going down Granville,

in law at Mother’s when I arrived.

Saturday 5 October

Dull morg. Lin off early (illeg) here to see about horse in country. Miss

G. & Maud drove with me to Victoria Sta, arrived 1 hour & 12 minutes too

soon, waited & saw me off to Worthing where Auntie met me. Long cozy

evg together. Told me that Mr Chapple died just in time to save himself

exportation for life & had (illeg) many, his wife & her family the Stones.

Sunday 6 October

Dull unsettled day. Auntie & self went to Church. V. good sermon -

withstanding temptation, false pride, upholding good above all things.

Wish I could hear the like every Sunday. Poured all afternoon. Long

cozy chat with Auntie. Told me of Mr Chapple’s wicked behaviour, (illeg)

his own people & many she knows not - ourselves - too.

Monday 7 October

Gale all night. Fine, took fly to Station 1/-, fare 2/-, flowers 1/-. Return fare

Brighton. Met Lin & took fly for day, went over 18 houses. Sweet little

bijou house in Sillwood Place, & 1st Avenue Hove. Strange in looking

over Flat - Ada Pickering owner - (immensely amused) came in,

belonged to her, took us all over her flat. Had not seen her for years.

Went over Mr L. Wingfield’s house & Mrs. Roscoe’s, all nice.

Wet day. Maud & self drove to enquire after Lady B. Little better, straw

down. Drove round Park. I stayed in bed till 12.

came with her Baby to lunch. Went out with Maud, left at 3.30. Looks

seedy & thin. Maud went with me to take Lin’s overcoat to Club. Left Lin

at Turkish baths. Called on Mrs. Stokes, leaving tonight for Paris.

Bought 2 lbs sausages & grouse, paid 3/11. Lin rode morg, walked to

Club & walked home after Bath – too much. Had hot whisky evg, cold

about same. Miss G. went to see Mrs. Sutterby, relief when she goes out

she talks so incessantly & not to much purpose. Had birds in my room.

Colder. Dullish day. Miss G. gone home for day. Sp. & Douglas here for

lunch, silly little boy, not half as bright as Jeff. No one called. Lin rode to

Mr Barker’s to lunch, they alone. L. out.

shares /92 second issue (4 shares). by registered letter fr. Young St.

Kens. In bed till 12. New horse “Marquis” arrived, J. & Lin met him. Lin

rode mare. I drove at 4 with Maud, sent off registered letter. Left M. at

Nana’s Queensgate, on to Lady B’s, better. Saw Eff, & Floss with chill!

Then to Williams (wet) about seeing house tomorrow. Foggy rather. Miss

Winthrop & Mrs. Gale called.

Lovely day. Breakfasted Punch. Lin off with Jolly to see vet about new

horse. Tickets for “Middle man” at Shaftesbury Theatre. Left certificate

of £100 B. Ayres & Rosario 4% part paid at London & County bank, will

be fully paid in Dec /89. Mrs. Cole & Edith & F. Walford to tea. Maud &

Miss G. out twice walking. Lin, Maud & self to theatre, draughty box!

Saw Sir T. Lucas. Mr Jones author of piece came to our box. Charmingly

written & wonderfully acted, enjoyed it immensely. Lost dear Mother’s

scent bottle.

Rained morg. Went into Mother’s room at a quarter to 7. Had had bad

night, was making tea. Stayed with her till 8.30. Wire fr. Lin. Came by

Granville. Met dear Roy. Lin walked back to Station with him. Looked

over stabling at St Mildred’s Rd. Nice but only one stall. Mother v. tired

did not come in to dinner.

Sunday 20 October

Dear Mother v. ill morg with heart just before dear Roy arrived, came

over in brougham as it rained at 10 o’c. Lin & Mervyn walked to

Ramsgate, saw F. C. Bs & a’Bs. I took Roy back at 9.30, had little talk

with Miss Allen.

Monday 21 October

Lovely day. Went over with Lin to Ramsgate, looked over stables &

houses. F. Cottage. L’s coachman told Lin of stabling. Lin returned to

Westwood with me instead of going to town, go together tomorrow. Dear

Mother little better.

Tuesday 22 October

Returned home by Granville with Lin. Dear Mother seemed v. low. Found

all well at home. Maud & Miss G. in good spirits. Sent about Jessie’s

table. Lin & self dined alone. I called at 3 on Miss Lutyens, interesting

talk about the time she was in Paris in /32. Lin working but so dark &

miserable. New horse came round, looks well & fresh, hope he’ll go on

well for Lin’s sake. I wrote Miss Levy about stabling at Ramsgate.


Finer. New horse’s cold worse! Worry for Lin. Sent Jolly to Miss Levy’s

solicitor about stabling! Still all uncertain about Ramsgate. Maud, Miss

Went out morg. shops with Maud in om, 25 Regent Circus, left fur at

Dickens & Jones to be made up, bought gloves, biscuits. Met Lady

Blomfield, promised to take tea with her next Sunday. Met Mrs.

Boughton, poor Baby Robb still alive! Lin hard at work, many

interruptions. Wrote making offer for house at Ramsgate. Must take

Allright’s stables, none others to be had. Evelyn C. to tea with Maud.

Maudie came in to dinner. Sp. called, same old complaints, wonder he

does not see how wearying they are for all alike. Edgar came, he &

Sophy in London for one night. Talked about business & dear Mother’s

health.

Lovely day. Went out early with Maud, bought her boots & shoes,

feathers for her hat, looks like new. Lin very busy. I sent dear Roy’s

purse & order to stores. Finished M’s hat. Lin worked till 10.30. Letters

fr. Edgar & Spencer.

Lin paid for M’s shoes fr. Barkers £1.3.5. Lovely day. 2 stalls for Lyceum

for “Dead Heart”. I took Maud to see “Doris” afternoon, excellent, with

Marie Tempest in it.

Lovely day quite warm. Busy cleaning all morg. Maud out at 12 with

Mary B. who returned here for lunch. Miss G, M. & self took her back &

went shop’g after, bought grasses 4d, dog’s rug & basket, stamps 4/1,

sugar basin, butter dish, Tony’s water bowl, 3/3. Mrs. Hammond called,

asked me to drive there tomorrow. Sat in drawing room evg.

Wet morg. Maud & self out shop’g caught in rain. Bought Maud gloves,

baize for birds, Tony’s chain & collar, Jane’s basin, pd. 6/5. Miss G. did

my hat & went with Maud for walk after lunch. Connie B. came for an

hour’s chat. Dine with Mrs. Hammond. Washing man called. L. & self

counted linen. Bought art muslin for piano.

Taken rooms for Jolly today. Dear Lin & horses coming down. Tassel

over to help. Wired Mr Schim. morg. for Roy. Met Roy at Ramsgate, his

train 30 minutes late. Lovely day. Allotment letter fr. B. A. Gt. Southern

Rly. £250,000 shares issued of £10 each. I having £470 in said stock they

allot me 18 shares to be called “5 per cent Ex. thro’ /94”. Roy seems to

Thursday 7 November

Most lovely morg, hot sun. Drawing room v. warm, no fire. Miss G, Maud

& Mary B. walked to Pegwell. Tried new horse in cart v. fidgety, would

not go so sent Jolly alone. He put horse into job master’s cart, took

coachman & went to see if Mrs. Roller was at Lanthorn House, left 2

days ago. Horse looked v. hot on return, afraid J. drives him too fast,

wants gentle handling. Connie came in, met Mrs. Whitehead & Mrs.

with flowers & vegts. I met Mrs. B. & Mrs. Whitehead. Mary out with

Maud. Dear Lin arrived by Granville, worried about horse not being

better. Worse since Jolly took him in cart Thursday, knew he would be.

Lovely day. Mr Blunt arrived about one o’clock, came in Mr Burnand’s

fly. Much more cheerful & less absent this time, consequently feel more

at home with him. He went for walk with Mr B. & Lin, both the Burnands,

Dr Roose etc. Miss G. & self little walk on Parade & in to Mrs. Pugin’s,

left paper P. M. Gazette with long notice of Lin at Mr Hammond’s. V.

Pleasant dinner & went after to Mr Burnand’s large party there. R.

Roose, H. & B. Hollingshead, Squire & ourselves. Mr Blunt sang

charmingly. Mr & Mrs. F. C. B. also, most charming evg. Long chat on

Gleamy day. Mr Blunt left by 12 o’c train, enjoyed his visit more this

time. Miss G, M, Mary & self went to see old ship launched. Winnie came

to tea, Connie B. to dinner. Mrs. Veile called with her daughter. Miss G,

M, & self shop’g after lunch. Paid paper bill, coffee pot & brush bill &

bought new butter dish. Called on Mrs. Bankes, sister & niece there. Lin

Montefiore, Wills, & Mrs. Vaile, at home! V. amusing at Mrs. V’s, Weigalls

there, pretty girl sang. Called on Mrs. Norden. Desperately slow dinner

at Mr Lilly’s, (illeg) with C. B. Mervyn made us roar mimicking him on our

Margate. I walked to Station with him, bitterly cold, snowed coming

Mrs. Hammond’s dinner 7.30. Altered till tomorrow. Mr & Mrs. Lilly & Mr

Pigot dine here 7.30. Mervyn taken ill, Dr Pearce here to see him. Gave

him morphia & says right lung dull! Changed his room to Miss G’s &

moved hers. Lin rode with Burnand to Mrs. H. morg. X. Petit ami l’après

midi. Mr Pigot charming, Lilly rude as ever, does not know how to

behave! pity his wife! Took Mr P. off in middle of interesting

conversation with Lin. Jane cooked dinner very nicely. Mr Roose, C, &

Mrs. Hammond’s dinner 7.30. Unable to go, Mervyn also. Mrs. F. C. B,

Connie & Miss H. in to see M. M. better but looks very poorly. Tassel in &

out seeing after his theatricals. Lin rode. Bitterly cold, c’d not work. Lin

had excellent dinner as usual at Mrs. H’s, Lilly more attentive than ever

to C. Connie came in to tea. Quiet evg. Mary B. to tea. Woke up at one

o’c & found Lin reading in drawing rm. (illeg) he was locked out. Read

from Russia!!! 100 horses in one stable died of it in London. Drove in

Stayed to lunch & dinner, F. W. there. Mervyn & Mr Green came over in

dog cart to Ramsgate, F. met them. Mother had bad heart attack last

night & slight one whilst I was there. F. bought me 2 prs stays fr. Russia

£1.16. Came back in brougham, F. with me.

horse, awfully nervous. Horse went wonderfully well. Found dear Mother

busy & worried. Hill going up today, her mother v.ill. Mervyn came back

with us to dinner. Lin in to Mrs. F. C. B. after dinner. Close warm evg.

S. W. gale blowing. Lin rode young horse hunting, Jolly on mare, unable

to hunt, too gusty. Went out with Miss G. & chicks, paid books. Called

with Lin & asked Mrs. Hammond to dinner tomorrow, coming. Mary here

to tea. Roy at his chess, looks better today. Mary & Ethel to tea, Lin took

them back.

Saturday 21 December

Mr & Mrs. Burnand & Mr & Mrs. Hammond to dinner 7.30. Mother sent

Maud cheque £1.1.0. Roy & Ethel out. V. jolly evg. Jane & L. did v. well.

L. kept her table tidier & did v. well.

Sunday 22 December

To St Mary’s with Maud. Roy for walk with Lin & Mr H. Mervyn dined here

& we went in to Burnands after, played dominoes & danced. Hammonds

there.

Monday 23 December

Mrs. Buckmaster’s dance. I drove over to Westwood to see dear Mother.

Mervyn came over & went up to London. Found Mother v. poorly & so

lonely. Lunched there & came back at ¼ p. 3 on ac’t of chicks going out

in dog cart. Roy came over to fetch me, drove young horse. Roy’s suit

arrived v. late. Chicks went off with Mary & Ethel Burnand, came back at

11, very tired.

Tuesday 24 December

Out morg. shop’g. Afternoon also. Little Jessie Norden to tea & lunch.

Continual little presents arriving fr. Burnands. Shop’g morg & afternoon.

Lin gave me purse.


Glorious Xmas morg. Roy off for long walk with Lin, Squire & large party

of Burnands, great many of Burnands in. Maud, Miss G. & self to St

Mary’s communion. Chicks received great many presents. After lunch

Lin, M. & self called on Mrs. Pugin, Hood, Hammond, where B.H. & B’s

were, also number at Hoods. All dined together, 4 boxes of toys fr.

Cremers, crackers fr. T. Smith’s. Connie B. came with Mr Ready to ask

us there after dinner. We all went, chicks so happy. Mrs. B. gave us all

presents, danced & had very jolly evg. Home at 11.30.


Fog, but bright. More presents & cards. Letter fr. C. S. Lin hunting.

Grand entertainment at Mrs. Burnand’s tonight. Mervyn & Bessie going

to act. Mervyn arrived in time for lunch. Rehearsed with B. H. after, has

dreadful cold. Mary B. in to tea. Lin riding. Jolly evg. at F. C. B’s. Mervyn

& B. H. charming. Frank did his song as (illeg) Reeves wonderfuly well.

Dreadful fright about Madame Bird, found later by Jane in curtains. I

slept with M, rather close! Roy with Lin, Mervyn in Roy’s room.

Friday 27 December

Much colder. Roy off with Burnands. Had fall on tricycle. After 4 all went

to Mrs. Pugin’s party. Roy drank too much claret cup. Mrs. Burnand &

self left early. Rosie B. had her nose knocked. Quiet evg. Chicks home at

7.30. Influenza still bad, many in London down with it, horses too. Dear

old Mr Barlow died yesterday.

St. E. C. for £100 stock in B. A. & Rosario Rly 4% debenture stock. Write

to London & County about these. All Burnands went up by 12 o’c train,

detachments on foot. Lin went with harriers. Mrs. H. out. Dull & cold day.

Mary in to say goodbye to Maud. Roy sick early, eat too much yesterday.

Went out morg. shop’g & paid part of books. V. heavy week.

Sunday 29 December

Lovely glorious day. Miss G, M. & self to Church. Walked 3 times up &

down Parade after. Lin & Roy for walk morg. Lin & Roy for long walk

after lunch with Squire, Hoods etc. General emptyness without

Burnands. Mr & Mrs. Davis called made unfortunate remark about Mde

Montalba’s Venetian bird! After dinner went in to Mrs. Hammond’s.

Walter Buckmaster asleep on sofa! Stayed till 10.30. Sharp frost. Roy’s

tooth bothering him. Wrote about omnibus for our return 7th January.

Apply for certificate of 18 new 5% Ex. Shares of £10 each in B. A. Gt.

Southern Rly 1894 allotted in Nov this year. In bed all morg. Mary Hood

to tea. F. Hood & Miss Roose called for Mary & stayed a short time. Roy

better. Letters fr. Lin.
