Marine Map Descriptions (See the table of contents for a description of legend items common to reach maps) SHORELINE MODIFICATIONS – This map depicts areas and facilities that have the potential to modify shorelines within Whatcom County.
Retaining Walls, Platforms, Groins & Jetties, Piers, Bulkheads – Over water features were digitized off of oblique imagery at 6“ resolution; WC PDS using Pictometry 2004 Dairies – Dairy farm, location quality is highly variable, barn, lagoon, entrance; Ecology Facilities database 2004 Hazardous Materials – Underground storage tanks, landfills, state cleanup sites, sewage treatment, etc; Ecology Facilities database (Published 2004) Waste Water & Storm Water – Industrial permits; Ecology Facilities database (Published 2004) Building Structures – Buildings (Com/Ind, Residential, others) within 200 ft +/- of SMP jurisdiction; Polygon sources include Whatcom Co. Public Works 1993 and 2002 CAD files, small cities, and Commercial/Industrial footprint digitized for WC PDS Infrastructure Study from 2001 Ortho photos. Point data were collected from 2004 aerial photos.
SHORLINE ACCESS – This map depicts public access and public or land trust ownership adjacent to the marine nearshore of Whatcom County.
Public Access – Points that allow public accesses (unofficial) are depicted on maps; WC PDS from 1989 Parks Comprehensive Plan, WC Parks & Rec 2005 Land Trust – Whatcom Land Trust ownership both public access and no access: Whatcom Land Trust 2004 Public Ownership – Lots owned by public agency or non profit; WC PDS 2006 from WC Assessor, Whatcom Land Trust
SHOREFORMS AND COASTAL DRIFT – Physical characteristics that define the marine nearshore of Whatcom County. (Bold number labels on map are drift cell numbers.)
Drift Cell Connectivity to Bluff Sediment – Characterization of the pre-development bluff/stream sediment input and the degree of connectivity of sediment sources remaining today; Johannessen & Chase 2005 Shoreforms – Characterization of upland sediment sources within littoral drift cells (Drayton Harbor, Lummi and Eliza Islands, and mainland south of Sandy Point was translated from Bauer 1974); Johannessen & Chase 2005 Recent Landslides – Landslides that have occurred since 2001. Landslides were mapped from in the field from Neptune Beach to Semiahmoo spit; Johannessen & Chase 2005 Other mapping was done using 2004 oblique aerial photos; WC PDS Drift Cells – A cell in which the movement of beach material can occur, showing the prevailing direction of movement (drift cells are labeled with their inventory number). Schwartz et al 1991, Johannessen & Chase 2005
SHORLINE FEATURES AND SUBSTRATE – Characteristics of the marine nearshore of Whatcom County.
Substrate – Description of intertidal beach composition, Substrate south of Pt. Whitehorn is from DNR Intertidal vegetation Inventory (1995), north of the Point comes from Ecology's Coastal Zone Atlas (1977). Substrate was classified according to a modified Marine and Estuarine Habitat Classification System for Washington State (Dethier, 1990). Nearshore feature labels were provided by DNR Shorezone inventory 2001
SHORELINE VEGETATION – This map depicts intertidal vegetation of the marine nearshore of Whatcom County Intertidal Vegetation – Classification of five nearshore vegetation types; South of Slater Rd. DNR Intertidal vegetation inventory 1995, Slater Rd. north to Point Whitehorn Fairbank Environmental 2004, North of the Point WC Wildlife Atlas 1994. Aerial photos – Mosaic of one meter resolution color photos from February 2004; Pictometry International 2004
CRITICAL SALTWATER HABITAT – Map depicts valuable areas for wildlife within the marine nearshore of Whatcom County.
Habitats and Species – Prime habitats or general location of species listed or a priority for federal, state, or local agencies; WDFW Priority habitats and species (March 2005 ground conditions) WC Wildlife Atlas 1994. Rare Plant and Ecosystems – Rare plants, animals, and ecosystems are from WA DNR Natural Heritage Program 2004. Preserves & Resource Conservation Areas – WA DNR natural resource conservation areas Marine Habitats and Species – Shellfish harvest areas; WA dept of Fisheries (1992), WA dept of Ecology (1992) and Pacific International Engineering/Anchor Environmental (1999). Spawning Forage Fish – Forage fish (summer and winter spawning) “present” during 2001 – 2003 field inventories; Whatcom Marine Resources Committee 2003
SHORELINE REGULATIONS – This map depicts the Shoreline Area Designations (otherwise know as shoreline environment designations) of the marine nearshore of Whatcom County.
Shoreline Area Designations – Development standards for areas adjacent to shorelines; Whatcom County PDS 2006 Title 20 Zoning – Whatcom County zoning boundaries; Whatcom County PDS 2006 UGA – Urban Growth Areas are areas that the adjacent city intends to annex in the future; Whatcom County PDS 2006 Parcels – Tax parcels boundaries; Whatcom County Assessor 2006 SED Break Lines – Indicates a change in shoreline designation; Whatcom County PDS 2006
