Marine energy has a dual
role in the blue economy
1. Energy generation at sea is a stand-alone sector
2. Removing energy constraints enables
development of other sectors
WPTO Role in the Blue Economy
“In addition to generating electricity for use on-shore, power
generated at sea (from waves, currents, or wind) could be
used to serve the needs of other existing or emerging
ocean industries (aquaculture, ocean mineral mining,
oceanographic research, or military missions).”

Marine Energy and Ocean Observing
How could energy innovation transform ocean
observing?
Extend Presence: Push observing technologies further from shore to explore
places we’ve never been
Indefinite Duration: Stay there as long as the mission requires (and
potentially stay underwater longer with minimal surface expression)
Unlock new Data Capabilities: Collect and process new kinds of data that
revolutionize our understanding of the ocean for any number of applications
Reduce costs, overcome market barriers, and reduce human intervention.

The Powering the Blue Economy™: Ocean
Observing Prize seeks innovators to integrate
marine renewable energy with ocean
observation platforms, ultimately
revolutionizing our capability to collect the
data needed to understand, map, and
monitor the ocean.
• Announced September 18th, 2019
• DOE (WPTO) and NOAA (IOOS) partnership
• Together, the Discover and Develop
Competitions will award up to $3 million in
cash prizes as well as other in-kind
awards.
• Discover phase will open soon (stay
tuned!) 11 awards, $125k prize pool.
