THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY IS GROWING – HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THIS FIELD?

Health care jobs require years of higher education. However, workers willing and able to make that investment see it pay dividends in the form of high salaries and ample opportunities. Plus, experts predict there will be great demand for nurses, physicians and other medical practitioners in the years to come. Bellevue School District offers a 3-hour Health Careers program at Sammamish High School, for all students in the district. The program is focused on students completing their Certified Nursing Assistant certification. The program is

designed to provide students an entry point to the health care field. The Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate allows students to work in hospitals and nursing facilities, once they are done. Students leave with 22 college credits from Bellevue College or 13 credits from the Lake Washington Institute of Technology. The program allows for many options post-secondary. REGISTERED NURSE Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 12 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. Growth is also expected to be faster than average in outpatient care centers, where patients do not stay overnight, such as same-day chemotherapy, rehabilitation, and surgery. In addition, an increased number of procedures, as well as more sophisticated procedures previously done only in hospitals, are being performed in ambulatory care settings and physicians’ offices.

Overall, job opportunities for registered nurses are expected to be good because of employment growth and the need to replace workers who retire over the coming decade. Source: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/nursing-assistants.htm

The Employment Security Department for the state of Washington posted the top-ranking positions in the state

and a Registered Nurse was ranked #2 with 7,517 jobs posted, 2,255 new job postings and an average wage of $83,414.00. Source:

LOOKING FOR A JOB IN THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING FIELD? Education is a growing field with a high demand in the elementary, middle and secondary fields. Bellevue School District has a complete Teaching Academy program, located at Newport High School that is open to all students in the district. The program, run by Rick Kilcup, instructor, provides the students with in-depth instruction on becoming an educator, and provides each student an opportunity to intern at their local elementary, middle, or high school – depending on the students’ interest. Students enjoy the opportunity to learn what education is all about and the many requirements teachers must follow from the state to the local level. Students will teach lessons, work with students, and receive feedback from their mentor teacher, just like a teacher would from their administrator. Once the students complete the program, they receive a promissory note from the district that states they will be the first to be interviewed for a position within Bellevue School District if they complete their post-secondary educational degree in good standing. Students also can earn college credit if they complete the course with a “B” or better grade. The following education is required to be an educator in the state of Washington, and the projected number of job openings from 2017-2022:

The diagram below shows the positions that are in demand and those that are not in-demand, as well as average salaries for the state of Washington. You will see from the chart that the positions listed that are in-demand are:

• Elementary Teachers

• Kindergarten Teachers

• Middle School Teachers

• Secondary School Teachers Each year, Bellevue School District does a great deal of recruiting to fill the many positions we have from elementary to high school. If you are interested in education/training, this is a great course to take and seek employment.

In addition to instruction and seminars at the high school, students will intern with a mentor teacher at a preschool, elementary, middle, or high school of their choice. Throughout the year, students participate in the inner-workings of the classroom, school and district. They will gain knowledge and experience in teamwork, time management, communication, leadership, and current issues in the school system. This course is a must for students interested in a professional career in education.

TEACHING ACADEMY 2

Students will continue to increase their knowledge about teaching and learning through daily internship experiences. Students will work closely with the Teaching Academy instructor and mentor teacher to complete independent assignments and projects.

WHY VISIT YOUR COLLEGE AND CAREER ADVISOR? Each high school has a College and Career Advisor who helps students with college and career planning. If your son or daughter has questions regarding college applications, essay writing, completing the FAFSA or WAFSA, or just has questions, please have them refer to the College and Career Advisor at their home high school. Each College and Career Advisor has an office area within the school. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come and visit the center. Each week multiple colleges come to each campus and present information to students about their schools, life on campus, and other important details. Make sure your son or daughter contacts the College and Career Advisor to see when these colleges are visiting. The College and Career Advisors also discuss career opportunities and take students on field trips to various businesses and apprenticeship programs to provide students the opportunity to see what life is like on the job or what an apprenticeship program looks like. Here are the College and Career Advisors that serve each school:

• Bellevue High – Lisa Hansen, [email protected] – located in the library.

• Interlake High – Position available

• Newport High – Vanessa Lopez-kopp, [email protected] – located in the library.

• Sammamish High – Arlene Scott, [email protected] – located near the cafeteria. During the month of December our College and Career Advisors will be going to the middle schools to talk to all the eighth graders about the many programs available through CTE within Bellevue School District, and in February they will talk to all the sixth graders as well. This will provide students the opportunity to hear about the many CTE programs and ask questions. The College and Career Advisors will cover information about the

different career pathways, leadership and club activities, college credit, and industry certifications available within each career pathway.

PACIFIC NW COLLEGE CREDIT Pacific Northwest College credit is an important element to all CTE courses. Our goal is to provide a rigorous academic experience for all our students; therefore, we work hard to provide as many college credit opportunities as possible, while students are enrolled in classes at their schools. Working with our local college professors, we review the state approved frameworks to ensure that the program is equal to our local college programs. If the work being done in the high school is equivalent to the college level course, the college will issue college credit to the district. The credits are affordable at $50.00 a year for as many CTE credits a student can complete with a “B” or higher grade. Students on “Free and Reduced” lunch receive free tuition. Just notify your instructor to have your fees waived. Registration for credit will occur on December 3. The CTE Spotlight will have detailed registration information, as well as, where to pay in next months issue. Payment is not due until June so you can make sure your son or daughter receives a “B” or better grade before payment. Courses that have multiple college options, like the example below. You must select the institution you would like to receive the credit. You cannot select both when registering.
