Young adults are intellectually and emotionally growing into adults. They are trying to make sense of the world around them and how they relate to this world. They are trying to define themselves and discover their personal identity. They are forming a gender and racial identity and developing a new body image. Teens need positive interactions with adults and peers to develop their social skills. Furthermore they have a desire for personal recognition, responsibility, and independence.

When selecting young adult literature and developing young adult services, it is important to keep these developmental needs in mind.

I am currently a high school English teacher. I have worked at the same high school for four years, and I typically teach sophomores, who are usually 15 or 16 years old. Being a teacher has allowed me to witness first-hand how different young adults react to literature, what types of novels and stories they appreciate, and what types of literature they tend to dislike. Furthermore, I have gained experience with how to talk to teens and how to make them feel comfortable and develop a sense of trust when talking to me.

Name: Sarah Age: 17 Grade: 11th Education:

She was attending public school until last year. She decided that she did not like school because of the attendance policy that caused her to lose credits for her classes and because she was not getting along with some of the other students at school. She was homeschooled last year, but she decided that she wants to return to public school this coming school year because she wants to be with her friends and her boyfriend, and she has trouble motivating herself to complete the assignments.

Family: She has lived at her uncle’s house for the past year, but she lives

in the same neighborhood as her mother and father, her sister and nephew, and her grandmother.

Birthplace: Lincolnton, North Carolina. She has lived in the area her entire

life.

I collected information about Sarah by interviewing her and having conversations with her about literature on several different occasions. I also observed her using the internet for various purposes at her home. I was able to do this because I am a close friend of her older sister. However, we were not able to visit the library together for me to observe her using library services. I did make my recommendationsbased on the library resourcesand services available at the LincolnCounty Public Library becauseit is library that serves the areawhere she lives.

Interview with Sarah Sarah feels that she is a strong reader, but

she only reads occasionally for pleasure. She enjoyed The Last Song, by Nicholas

Sparks, but she did not like the Twilight novels or movies. She list Nicholas Sparks and Laurie Halse Anderson as two of her favorite authors, and she describes the type of literature that she enjoys as realistic fiction and magazines.

She knows that she does not typically enjoy Westerns, science fiction, historical fiction about wars, or nonfiction about wars. She also does not seem to be interested in fantasy novels because she claims she used to love Harry Potter, but she, “can’t stand that stuff now.”

Although she finds the library to be inviting and the librarians approachable, she only visits the library about once a year and only asks when trying to find a particular item or there is a problem with the computer.

When asked what rules she would change at school, she mentioned making the dress code less strict and changing the rules on self-defense so that anyone attacked would be able to protect him or herself without punishment.

Partial Video of the Interview The woman being interviewed is Salina, who is in charge of the young adult

programs in Lincoln County. She travels to the four three different branches in Lincoln County to hold events and programs for young adults. She is starting a book club in the fall at all of the branches. When planning programs, they analyze events in the past, attend workshops to get new ideas, analyze the budget, and collaborate with community organizations, such as Four-H, parks and recreation, and public schools, and look on other library’s websites.

She says that the library advertises young adult programs on the main page of the library’s website, the newspapers, fliers in the library, and sometimes through the public schools, she wants to advertise through and collaborate with schools more often.

The programs they have hosted recently include a teen beach party with food and a DJ, and the sea creature competition, which allowed teens to use clay to create a sculpture or scene and win prizes. All participants were able to choose one paperback novel to keep, and they received cookies and a drink. On July 26 th, they will have a pizza and game night that will involve a Wii and board games and prizes.

The young adult section at the main branch in Lincolnton does have a separate seating section for young adults and the ALA posters with celebrities reading. All of the libraries have a clearly marked section for young adult literature that include seasonal displays, graphic novels, and fiction, but nonfiction books are mixed with the adult and juvenile nonfiction books. Study guides for high school and college prep tests and subjects are available, but there is no tutoring program in place.

There are sections for individual work and group work, and schools are able to bring their classes on fieldtrips to complete projects and conduct research.
