A child who feels unconditionally loved is more likely to reach out to the world with confidence and security. Show your child respect and expect to be respected. Children learn respect through example and encouragement. A child who has not learnt to control the urge to make hurtful comments to companions and to adults, will find it progressively harder to exercise control of other destructive impulses. Have high expectations of conduct. Calmly and consistently enforce limits on behaviour. Give children plenty of opportunities to make personal choices and let them see that all choices have consequences. Recognise and encourage acts of generosity, tolerance and thoughtful decision-making when ever you see them. Give your child plenty of opportunities for success in a whole variety of activities. This builds self esteem which is an important element for strong character. Talk openly about your beliefs and values. While being understanding and compassionate, be quite clear in the stand you take on issues of right and wrong. Such parental consistency provides a powerful support for any child’s developing character. We trust that a Catholic education at Marian Catholic College has afforded them a clear understanding that a fulfilling life is not only a consequence of acquiring knowledge and skills, but more significantly is founded on a strong moral base, focused on the sharing of one’s gifts and is a continual search for meaning in all that is encountered. DEVELOPING CHARACTER

By Barry Dwyer

To talk of character sounds a little old-fashioned these days. Yet the development of a strong character in children and teenagers is a great preparation for dealing with the inevitable pressures of modern society. For a start, people of strong character are not easily led by others into destructive and foolish behaviour. What does your experience tell you about the ways in which character is developed? Here are some suggestions you might like to consider:

Build character on the foundations of love and acceptance.

Year Twelve Graduation Mass and Ball

Tonight family, friends and College staff members gather with Year 12 students in prayer and celebration to honour their achievements and their contribution to the life of the College over the past six years. In essence a life blessed by God!

Saint Ignatius of Antioch was a great early Church bishop. Many of the early Catholics were told that they had to cease worshiping Jesus and start worshiping the Roman Emperor. St. Ignatius refused and so he was sentenced to death. He was forced onto a boat which was sailing to Rome so that he could be fed to starving lions at the Coliseum. On the way to Rome the boat stopped at several ports. At these ports, St. Ignatius was greeted by thousands of Catholics who applauded his bravery. At each stop he would give the local Catholics a letter encouraging them to remain faithful to Jesus. When the boat finally reached Rome, St. Ignatius was sent to the Coliseum where 50,000 spectators awaited his appearance. He was placed into the middle where two starving lions devoured him. But what is interesting about this story, were the final words that St. Ignatius of Antioch spoke to those responsible for his death. And his words were 'I forgive you.' Jesus told us to forgive those who have hurt us; it is possible, but only with God's Grace. God's Grace gives us the courage to stand before starving lions; it also gives the courage to forgive others. Let us pray to Jesus and ask Him for this gift.

2015 WORLD EDUCATION GAMES

Last month, Marian Catholic College participated in the World Education Games where over 6 million students from 20,000 schools were registered and participated. The main sponsor, 3P Learning partnered with UNICEF where the very act of student participation generated support for the sponsor’s educational projects. Every point earned by students during their competition was turned into cash to fund the sponsor’s educational initiatives. The fund generated will purchase over 130 Schools in a Box supporting the education of tens of thousands of students in the most need.

The school contributed a total of 7456 UNICEF points which helped in the contribution of over $100,000 to UNICEF. A total of 530 students participated and answered a total of 6257 questions in 6 352 minutes spent online.

Congratulations to the top three students on their excellent achievement – worthy of special certificates :

Hai Lin Ruan, Year 8, First Place with 382 points

Blair Davidson, Year 7, Second Place with 295 points

Elizabeth Portolesi, Year 10, with 155 points.

On Wednesday October 28, 11 Marian students joined other Year 10 students for a Mechatronics Expo Day it the Wagga TAFE campus. After a very long bus trip the students were able to construct a simple robot arm and look at robot basics and electronics and how mechatronics can lead to a variety of careers. They also saw a 3D printer in action and some of the amazing things it can make. A robot called Nao showed what it could do with instructions by voice. The TAFE Mechatronics program is now offered in new interactive on-line learning

YEAR 10 BORAMBOLA RETREAT

This week Year 10 took part in a retreat in Borambola. The students participated in activities such as jump n’ put, raft building, mud run, high ropes and various night activities. A night time liturgy was also held, which concluded the night on a positive.

This experience was to create and benefit from ‘team building’. As much fun as the retreat was, it enabled us to learn. We learnt about developing togetherness, understanding, support and opening our minds.

We arrived home from our retreat successfully feeling positive, energized, motivated and happy to have had such an experience with our friends and teachers around us to enjoy it with.

Two candlelight liturgies were held at the Year 10 camp on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th November at Borambola. Students listened as Year 10 Coordinator, Mr Neville, spoke about the importance of believing in yourself to achieve dreams. As a reflection activity they were invited to get a letter with a candle, made especially for the liturgy, placed around the camp site and present it to the person whose first name began with that letter reciting “dare to dream”. Students then wrote their personal dream under the letter as the first step towards it. After the liturgy they placed a message for their year group for the rest of the year on a banner.
