West Taieri Rugby Football Club – Senior teams
2018 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the rugby club, as for the first time in many years, we will be fielding two teams, one in each of the Premier 2 and Senior grades. In a time when most rugby clubs are going backwards, in terms of the number of teams they can field, it is fantastic that we have been able to go forwards. This will present us with a number of opportunities as a club, but, especially it gives guys in the West Taieri area that aren’t ready to play Premier
2 grade, or do not won’t to play in a more competitive grade, a place to play rugby. It also creates challenges for the club as we come to grips with the
logistics of running a second team. However, the club is determined that we will be fielding two teams for the foreseeable future so it will be working hard
to make this happen.
The Premier 2 side will be seeking to defend the Championship Banner that they won, when they defeated Kaikorai in last season’s final. The boys have
been training hard and are itching to get onto the field to begin their campaign. The majority of last year’s team have returned, along with a few new faces that who have decided to come out to West Taieri. The team is looking like a very competitive unit. Some are already whispering that they may even be better
than last year.
After a few years of talking about it, this year we will be fielding a second team that will play in the Senior grade. There have been good numbers at practice,
with a number of old faces returning and new faces appearing at the club. Many of the team haven’t played rugby for quite a few years (e.g., 15-20!). So
it’s great to see them pulling the boots back on. Special mention must be made of the fantastic recruiting work of Caleb Holmes, who has been instrumental in getting the team going. Thanks Caleb. The main aim of the team this year, is to have some good times on and off the field, so if that’s something that interests
you, come along and join us.
The season begins for the Senior grade after Easter, on 7 April, and a week later for the Premier 2 grade (although they may actually start on 7 April as well so they can have duck shooting opening weekend off, (this is to be confirmed).
Check our Facebook page for game details each week.
Finally, the club will be having our Opening Day on 14 April, and we will be
trying to have both teams at home in order to kick-start our season. Regardless, we have Brendan Darling coming along in the evening to play a few tunes and to get the season started in style, so come on down and give yourself a night out. More details will be announced once
draws are confirmed. Look forward to seeing you down at the club!

OUTRAM PLAYCENTRE NEWS Wow, what a fantastic start to the year Outram Playcentre has had with a great number of new
Enrolments! I would like to welcome all our new families to our playcentre community, which now consists of almost 20 families. The weeks are flying bye as the children are out discovering what our amazing centre and community has to offer. Keep an eye out for our wee high visible children as we make our way around Outram and please say hi if you see us. It’s hard to believe term 1 will be coming to an end very shortly.
I’m very excited to let the community know, that from term 2, we will be opening another session which on Friday Morning session 9.00am – 12.30pm. And being able to offer a third opening day again, is a true reflection of where
playcentre is sitting in our awesome community. I’m a strong believer that playcentre is just as much for our tamariki as it is our parents and provides
amazing support, friendships and opportunities.
Some of the children recently had a lot of fun making sand saucers and paintings for the summer flower show, which was held in the Church Hall in
February. The children really love getting involved in these activities, and then taking parents and grandparents to see their achievements. We would like to
thank the organisers of both the summer and spring flower shows for including us and we can’t wait for the next one.
It is a little sad to report that this year we have had some damage done to our playground outside of opening times, and, most significantly, our shade
Outram Playcentre is turning 50 years old. It’s time to celebrate!!
We think 50 years is an awesome achievement and one that’s well worth celebrating, so watch this space. I’m asking for anyone who has been
involved with playcentre in the last 50 years and who wants to help with organising an event for this huge milestone, to let me us know at:
Or, if you just have some old pictures or memories you want to share, we
would love to hear about all of those too.

sail above our beloved sandpit has been damaged badly. This will need to be
replaced to keep our little ones safe from the sun; when we have the funds to do so.
Please, if anyone does notice anything they think shouldn’t be happening in a pre-schoolers playground, please contact myself on 027 403 9697.
At the end of last year, we had a fantastic Christmas party evening with all the centre families, some amazing food and the big red fella was dropped off by the local volunteer fire brigade to give the children Christmas books. It was a great
night, and a great way to see 2017 out. We also used this as the perfect opportunity to farewell Rachel McNeil, who stepped down as President at the end of the year. She was gifted a beautiful garden bench seat bought by all our parents’ to say thank you for all her amazing efforts and hard work in keeping the playcentre running; especially when things looked a little sad. We are so
grateful for all her help and dedication over the years. She will be missed immensely. Rachel has already been called upon more times for help than I’d
like to admit!
So now I hear you saying who is the new Playcentre president?
Hi, my name is Jaclyn Harris, I live on a farm just out of Outram with my husband Dale, and my two children Lane (5) and Lexi (3). I basically grew up on
the Taieri, moved away and then, wouldn’t you know it, came back to my
home-grown roots. Taking on the role of President has been slightly daunting, but after being involved with playcentre for that last almost 4 years, I decided it
was my turn. So I hope I can do the role justice. I have brilliant committee
support, a very patient secretary, and let’s not forget, our amazing
Lead educator, Louise.
If your thinking or have thought about checking Playcentre out for yourself,
the first three sessions are free!
So, come along, have a look and a play. There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain. We will see you there!
Opening Hours:
Monday 9am – 12.30pm 0 to 5 years
Wednesday 9am-12.30pm 0 to 5 years

Self Care in our Busy Lives
Taking time out to look after ourselves is one of the many challenges we face while raising a family, working, juggling finances and so on.
That is why Angela offers a range of therapies to help reduce stress and
encourage relaxation of the mind and body.
Appointment times are during the day & 7.30pm Sunday to Friday.
If you love a foot massage, then Reflexology is for you. In this session pressure is applied to various reflexes or points in the feet that correlate to the organs and glands of the body. This reduces stress and tension, and allows the
body to relax and function more effectively.
Relaxation Massage is designed to relax your mind and body. It doesn’t “fix” problematic muscles. The best therapy for deep relaxation is a Thermal Hot
Stone Massage. Basalt Stones are heated in hot water to approximately 60°c, and then placed on the body. Stones are used to heat your muscles, and the
massage is done using both the stones and my hands. There is a very high chance you will fall asleep during the therapy.
Angela still offers Trigger Point & Acupressure Point Therapy that works on
specific problems and areas.
In July Angela will be training to become a Yoga teacher,
a therapy everyone should try, so keep an eye out!
Thermal Hot Stones 60 minutes $75, 90 minutes $90
Reflexology, Relaxation, Trigger Point & Acupressure 30 minutes $40, 60 minutes $60

News from Outram School We are now in Week 7 of the first term, and, as always, Outram School has been a
busy and productive place. Our school roll currently sits at 151, with a good
number of pre-schoolers preparing to join us, as they celebrate their fifth birthdays.
We look forward to welcoming them and their families to our school.
2018 is outdoor pursuits year for the senior school, our alternative to camp year, with one adventure-type activity offered each term. This is a chance for the
students to experience a range of outdoor pursuits. Our first event for the year was Waihola Day. Based at the Waihola Domain and CYC Camp, students had the
opportunity for kayaking, orienteering, archery, rifle shooting, team initiative challenges and cooking.
A great day had by all, with many students undertaking new activities.
Running parallel to the senior outdoor education programme is the Year 7 and 8 CAPES Adventure Pathway programme. CAPES is the school award, with four
recognised ‘pathways’, covering cultural, academic, physical, and enterprise and service activities and achievements. At Year 7 and 8, we extend to CAPES Plus, with
students also recognised for activities and excellence in adventure and outdoor pursuits. Each year, four of the options are planned and completed as a class. For Term 1, the students elected to learn to surf, and enjoyed a good day with the surf
school at St Kilda.

Each year, a focus of Term 1 is to decide on the student leadership positions in the school. At Year 6, we have the Physical Activity Leaders (PALs), a group of students
who are trained through Sport Otago to run and lead lunchtime games and activities for the other students. Our PALs have been selected and have been very
busy with the classes they are assigned to. Our Student Council has also been decided, with Year 8 students taking on roles as house, Allen Centre,
C ultural and sport leaders. Our Student Council Chair for 2018 is Finn Aitken, and deputy is Samantha Cuthill.
To support the seniors in their leadership role, Kerry Kakahi delivers a leadership programme for all our Year 7 and 8s through the year. All Year 8s will be attending
the Young Leaders’ Day in April. We also plan to run the Kelly Sport ‘Sporting Minds’ programme in Term 4, which has a strong focus on leadership.
At our first assembly of the year, we recognised and celebrated the success of Jacob Waide in athletics.
Representing Outram at the Otago Primary Schools’ Athletics Championships, Jacob has broken three long-standing throwing records for his age group.
2016 - U12 Shot Put
2017 - U13 Shot Put & 2017 U13 Discus
The Otago Primary Schools’ Sport Association produced three medals to honour these achievements and it was a special moment to present these to Jacob.
The end of this term will see a significant change in staffing at Outram School.
Mrs Tania Bellamy will be leaving Outram School and the teaching profession, to pursue a new career. Tania Bellamy has been a member of the Outram teaching staff for 18 years. In that time, many members of the Outram and wider West Taieri community will have had children in Mrs Bellamy’s classroom. All children taught by Tania will have benefitted from a talented teacher, who puts her heart and soul into teaching and the
children in her care. We wish her the very best and every success in her new venture. Cont. on page 12→

Congratulations to Cathy Reid, who has been seconded as a Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour, from the start of Term 2. Cathy will be on leave from her teaching and specialist education position, for the remainder of this year. Cathy’s
secondment is well-deserved recognition of her experience and qualification in the area of learning support.
We have an assembly planned for the morning of 13th April, to farewell Tania and wish Cathy the best in her new role. If you would like to attend this assembly,
please check for details in the online version of our school newsletter for Thursday 5th April or contact the school office.
We have so much more planned for the 2018 school year and look forward
to sharing some of what happens at Outram School,
in future issues of The West of the Taieri.

Taieri Lions - Serving in the Community
Activities since the last publication, have been many and varied, the month of
November included, manning the chip machine, at St Mary’s School Fair in Mosgiel. Two social fishing trips, to Moeraki, and to Twizel, both of these were well supported by the members, and more importantly, plenty of fish were caught.
Terry Davies was the Guest Speaker at the monthly Tea meeting. Terry gave an
informative talk on the Dunedin Venues Management, the development of the
Stadium as an all- purpose facility, along with his view of the future for Dunedin City.
December was a busy month, with a large team of Lions on deck to assist with the annual Food Bank Drive, in the Mosgiel and Taieri area. The well supported
fertiliser stall, was shifted from Fergusons, at the entrance to Outram, to a new site in the town. The major upgrade at the Berwick Forest Lodge was further
progressed, with $20,000 spent on lighting, new beds and mattresses,
upgraded painting, and 350 man hours put in by club members.
Financial assistance provided for the Berwick Community Pool Trust to purchase a new pool cover, approx. $4,000 cost.
The December Tea meeting was memorable in more ways than one. This was an opportunity to thank Peter and Beth Daniels, Dennis Axe, and Ivan and Joan Bennett, in recognition of the huge number of hours, all three men put in to the Mechanics shed at the Outram School. The Taieri Lions have had a strong
interest in this project since its beginning, and Peter, Dennis and Ivan have
ensured its success. The young students have benefitted immensely from the knowledge they have gained.
Seventy Lions, wives and partners were entertained at the meeting by
Johnathon Usher, who had us all bamboozled with his magical talents. It was a hilarious night; Johnathon seemed to read the requirement for the occasion.
Two new members were inducted during the meeting. Tony Entriken and
Graeme Irvine were welcomed in to club, stating their desire to give back to a great community.
The club assisted Bridget O’Neill with some funding for a school trip to India, organised by Kavanagh College, focussing on local community and health projects in that country. Cont. on page 15 →→→

Members assisted with the gate-keeping, and parking, on two occasions at the Wingatui races, giving up their time on Boxing Day, to help out. Similar duties were carried out at the Taieri A & P Show, and the Outram
Rodeo. On this occasion the members were unanimous in their support of this family orientated, community event, as they have been for a good number of years. Firewood working bees are on-going. This time around, assistance was given to a local farmer to cut down some blue-gum trees, which will be split and sold as Firewood this winter. Another rewarding day, providing afternoon tea for 90 elderly citizens at the Outram Historical Park.
On-going, all year, is the Cash for Cans initiative, in Mosgiel each Saturday morning, at the old, Countdown car park, from 10-11 am. Depending on
current metal prices, 60 c/kg is paid for surplus cans, donations are gratefully received.
The February meeting was held at the Berwick Forest Lodge, giving members and family of the Lions and the Taieri Rotary clubs, an opportunity to view the upgrade. The Taieri Rotary club have also carried out a considerable amount of voluntary work at the Lodge, including painting the roof. Five members of the club travelled up to Middlemarch recently, to assist the Strath Taieri and
Maniototo Lions with the last transition stage of the Central Rail Trail Duathlon. Phew!! It’s been a busy time!!!
Coming up over the next few months, an outing is proposed to view the
industries, Calder & Stewart, also McLay Boats, at Milton. Two further fishing trips, one to Moeraki and the other, to the Hunter Valley. The popular Crop competition will be repeated this year, there has been strong interest from the rural community, the award night scheduled for 18th May (Friday).
Coming up also is the 27th, Berwick Outdoor Experience course, 11-19th May. Applications are now steadily flowing in for the 40 places available. Minimum age 18 years.
Cost - $550. This is a non- profit making project, purely designed to assist with increasing confidence, and personal development.
Have you considered joining a vibrant Lions club, serving in the community??
Why not join us, 2nd Wednesday of the month, West Taieri Football Clubrooms, 6.30 pm.

OUTRAM
VOLUNTEER
FIRE
BRIGADE
We have made it through a very hot and dry summer, with a reasonably low amount of callouts due to the weather conditions, which is great! This is mainly
down to people adhering to fire restrictions and being responsible
when lighting fires.
The majority of call outs over the Summer period have been for Motor Vehicle Accidents, which always happens during the holiday time of year.
Another stand out call would have been the Burnside Fire on Thursday 31st of January, around 5:30pm. We were called to assist with fire fighting operations and
evacuations of business's and residents. The fire danger was extreme, with high temperatures, low relative humidity, and strong Nor-West winds. It needed a huge
effort from everyone involved to control the fire and prevent further damage. There were fire crews from all around our region at this call from
Balclutha to Middlemarch and up to Waitati. After providing protection to
surrounding buildings, one of the Outram crews were sent to extinguish several spot fires in the Concord residential area, while other fire fighters from Outram
focused on the huge pile of burning logs. After a few long hot hours we got back to our station around 10:30pm to clean up and recommission our fire truck for the
next call - which just happened to be the next morning. From one extreme to the other, February 1st the OVFB were called to assist with flooding in Mosgiel's
Gordon Road, where we pumped water from flooded areas to
prevent it entering local businesses.
We are currently still in a PROHIBITED Fire Season, which means no fires can be lit in the open air without getting a permit - note that all existing permit issued prior
to the fire restrictions have been revoked, and you will need to apply for a new fire permit. To check current fire season status and further information please
visit http://urban.checkitsalright.nz/check-fire-season-status
With Winter sneaking up on us it is a good idea to get your chimney swept out so it is ready for the cooler months.
