Welcome to the Margaret River Region A treat for lovers of certified organic and biodynamic wine A growing number of producers in the Margaret River Wine Region are gaining certification as organic or biodynamic grape or wine producers. The five producers on this trail are the only ones in the region who have fully certified both their vineyards and their wineries, to guarantee the integrity of their wines. These producers have created a wide range of wines and cellar door experiences for you to enjoy, and they all look forward to sharing their passion for organic and biodynamic farming and winemaking. Visiting these producers will take you on a relaxed and picturesque journey through the heart of the Margaret River Wine Region and its many attractions. SETTLERS RIDGE ORGANIC WINES Current cellar door offsite in Cowaramup Settlers Ridge was the first 100% NASAA certified winery in the Margaret River Region. Vineyard (6107) and Winery (6115P) established in 1994. Three wines are preservative free and all other wines extremely low in preservative. No egg, fish or milk is used in the winery so wines are allergy friendly. Current Cabernet and 2009 vintage, is drinking beautifully, confirming quality is not compromised with organic winemaking. Organic and biodynamic food production is founded on the principle of producing food in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible way, through soil regeneration, water conservation and animal welfare; and minimising the negative impacts. Certification practices include: avoiding the use of synthetic or artificially produced pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers or GMOs (genetically modified, transgenic organisms). promoting biodiversity by growing a variety of crops preventing soil erosion and improving soil quality conserving energy protecting wildlife, stream banks and watersheds Certification requires meeting the standards prescribed by one of Australia’s five private certifiers, who base their certification standards on the National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce published by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources. The wineries are listed in order of driving from Margaret River. There are plenty of great detours to beaches (Prevelly, Gracetown and Yallingup) and other attractions along the way, and details of these can be found at the visitor centres or online at www.margaretriver.com.
